    The Mini Rec was impressive in this battle but it's dialed in about as good as it gets while the M5's full potential is being held back. I respect your decision to use the IIC+ mode (a classic, I agree!) but personal preferences aside, I think a more fair comparison in a high gain metal battle would be running the Mark V in the Mark IV or Xtreme mode so you're getting the most modern high gain tones out of both heads.

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  2 года назад +2

      Xtreme mode is great. Lately I've learned to appreciate the IIC+ mode more though.

    The mini rec was warmer and cut through the mids better. The mark v had a higher end presence. I gotta go with the mini rec on this one! 🤘🏼 Great vid and glad you used EMG’s!

    I own the mini rect & a mark V:25 and I love them both. They’re certainly different but both sound sick. The mini rect is easier to use because it has a much simpler eq. The Mark is a fantastic amp but you can get lost in the endless graphic tweaking BUT when you find a tone is sounds absolutely massive . I wouldn’t sell either of them.

    For me the Mark V 35 absolutely destroyed the mini. The mini is kinda harsh and buzzy for my taste, definitely not a tone I enjoy. But I liked the blended tone a lot in the end. :)

    This is so useful, thank you. I have a mkV:25 not a Rect (a TA-30) and listening the isolated tracks was so illuminating! I ended preferring the isolated Rect and the mixed mkV. Using both in the final mix is an excellent call and reminds me to experiment in my own mixes.

    The Riffs at the 6ish minute mark are sick! I love this video! I've been a huge proponent of the mini rectifier. It sounds great alone or take it into MASSIVE territory with an EQ in the loop

  • @LevitatorMusic
    @LevitatorMusic 2 года назад +2

    The high freqs on the rectifier are too high for my liking. I don't know why so many guitar players (like 90% of them that I've played with) insist on having ear piercing highs in their tone. Especially when all it does is add noise and make your guitar tone sound shrill and thin and they think they sound like James Hetfield but they really sound like a mix between Dimebag and screws in a blender.
    I assume it's because they play scooped and are always buried in the mix so they just keep adding more highs and more gain trying to be heard but all they're really doing is fighting with the bass and cymbals for space in the mix when what they really need to do is turn the highs and gain down and bump the mids up. Even classic scooped tones are still pretty mid-range heavy when you hear them isolated unless you're talking about death/black metal....and in a lot of those cases, they whole point was to make the guitar sound like shit so idk...lol
    Not directed toward you. I know you know how to get amazing tones out of just about anything. Just ranting a little bit haha.

  • @Unibabble
    @Unibabble 4 месяца назад

    The Rectifier was a lot tighter, but you had the Mark V on the IIc+ preamp, which has a softer attack. Extreme mode is a much tighter setting, but gain might be a little lower, so... Anyways really enjoyed this. I agree, both sound great. Very cool little riff there BTW!

    I wish I had waited to watch all on the video before my last comment.
    One deal with Mesa's, a little moreso that other amps, is NEVER roll any of the rotary knobs to zero. Killing the mids, like you did, on the tone knob removes those mids from the rest of the signal chain. You can't add them back in with the 5 band EQ because they're gone. Get a general tone with the knobs, scoop to hell and back with the EQ. If you need more, parametric EQ in the effects loop.
    Another thing I found useful was not cranking the gain past 1 oclock unless I wanted saturation for lead tones. If Mk IIC+ doesn't get the aggression you need at 1o'clock on the gain, move to Mark IV mode. It keeps the rhythm tones a little more defined and more percussive.
    The Mark series amps really react well to a boosted input. I'm not talking the usual Tube Screamer nonsense, as a Tube Scream in a Mark V mini me amp is actually horrible - but an EQ infront of the input boosting the signal or any other clean boost works well. If you're running EMG's, 18V rather than 9V.

    I see you tend to keep the Master around 9 o'clock on the Mini Rec. I have the Recto-verb 25 and noticed that the Master volume really changes the tone once I get to about 10 'clock. Which is great for recording with a load box because I have lots of tone options. Around 9 o'clock tends to be tighter and more focused.

    Mark V 35 is super versatile. So many great sounds in the amp. HOWEVER, it does take some fiddling to find the right sound do to how versatile it can be. Compared to some other amps where everything sounds good no matter where its set, that is not the case with the mark v.

      I know right? I've steered away from recs because ive always heard about them being loose in the bottom end and grainy and noisy as hell. Definitely have to use an overdrive in front to tighten it up. As for the noise, I'd have to play one to confirm just how much really. But here...shit, this rec sounds freaking brutal. It actually has the sound i prefer. Of course he's probably got it running through a lot of shit to clean it up, shape it and cut the noise. Probably sounds completely different in a bedroom setting.....maybe. id still like to try one one day though.✌🤟🍻🍻
