  • Apologies for the shaky video. I did not weigh down the camera stand and I was playing quite loud.
    In this video I play:
    2010 MIJ Charvel San Dimas with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge;
    1996 PRS CE 24 (the good ones) with EMG James Hetfield pickups
    into:
    Mesa Mini Rectifier 25w head with new JJs (this is the mini rec I repaired);
    Mesa Badlander 25w head with JJs.
    Cab is a Mesa Vertical 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30s (UK).

    crazy how tight the badlander is to the mini rec. has a nicer mid range as well. sounds really huge for 25w

    Great video thanks. I think I am still gonna buy the Mini Rectifier. I guess the sound is just more to my liking. Badlander I feel its like less tight.

    Very cool that you have done these. Seems like there would be more folks comparing these 2 amps.
    I've listened to your whole series to see if it's worth getting a Badlander. I've owned a good dozen Rectos (including minis, 2 channels, Solos, 3 channels, Roadster and Stiletto(Marshall voiced Recto)) and still have 3 or 4. All except the Stiletto of course get very close to each other. I find the Rectoverb 25 a little in between the mini Recto and Badlander mini, even tho Mesa says the circuit is the same. I did heavy AB I sold my mini rec once I got the Rectoverb 25.
    The Badlander strikes me as closer to a blend of Recto and Mark series. It's a cool variation. Might just need to pick one up for myself.
    BTW, I like how you use a Strat with a JB, which is a familiar reference tone, and don't just play drop tuned metal. Hard for me to ever hear much difference with drop C chugs.

      Thanks for the kind words. I like the badlander a lot. It is probably the perfect amp for me. The Rectoverb 25 is a great amp. I haven’t owned one but I’ve played them. If I wasn’t such a 100w snob, I’d probably get one. Getting the 20/25w amps is something I sort of struggle with doing. Then again though, I’ve never been let down by a 20/25w for volume live.

      @@paroblynnYou're welcome . Yeah, I prefer the bigger power section always. It's a feel thing for me. I try to use any of my 90-120 watt amps when I can. I've been exploring more smaller amps and modeling out of necessity the last few years. Once I'm going through the PA, the 20-25 guys give me equally good sound though. The feel is just different.

      @@paroblynn I actually have a Rectoverb 25 and have been struggling with deciding whether its worth selling it for a Badlander 25 or not. I didn't have a good experience when I tried the Badlander 100 in store in 25 watt mode. Felt it didn't have enough gain and it did have more of the "Marshally" tones vs. the mini rec I compared it to. The Rectoverb on the otherhand, probably has too much gain. I do like how the Badlander sounds with a boost though. My main thing is that I'd love if the Rectoverb 25 had the direct out and cab emulation features like the Badlander so I could record direct or go direct to a PA. I'm thinking I may also miss the two clean channels on the Rectoverb 25 if I went with the Badlander 25 which only has 1 clean channel. The Badlander also doesn't have as many lows/bass as the Rectoverb/Mini, but that can be a good thing depending on a band situation or mix. I'd really love an actual Dual Rectifier in a 25 watt package because 100 watts is just too impractical for me, so I guess whatever one is closest to the real thing is what I want.

    Hey, nice review :). I just got one this week, and I`ve noticed it`s making more humming with my Cab speakers compared to the rest of my tube amp.

    I prefer the Badlander amp here because it sounds like a modern Rectifier with a boost pedal sound built in. I have a Badlander 50 which I use only in 20 watts mode at my current house, but It's amazing how much volume can come out of that 25w amp and even in 20 watts mode with my Badlander it can get still super loud and I like to use it at lower and medium volumes unless I am somewhere not close by other homes.

    Hey Rob just got the Badlander 25 still getting used to it thinking it needs a little more gain worked well at band practice but next practice I will be using the electric eye audio mud killer pedal which also acts as a footswitch I think it will be perfect for the badLander... also if you haven't tried it yet mxr 10-band EQ in the loop of any amp its like injecting it with steroids ...great video

    • @paroblynn
      @paroblynn  Год назад +1

      Thanks! I didn’t run anything through either of the amps for this video because I just wanted to show what they both did out of the box. I usually keep the gain on the badlander at 130-2 o’clock and hit the front end with a sd1 or ts type. On my board now is a prince of tone and a grid slammer. But I may change out the prince of tone for my Keeley sd1.
      I agree about the eq.
      The thing I like about the badlander is the gain is good all the way to maximum. On the mini Rec, I feel like 2 o’clock is about the best useable gain from it.

      @@howardgillingham4763 I own a TC100. I’ve owned a 50. I wish I would’ve recorded them both side by side. Back when I had them both I didn’t really know what I was doing regarding recording. Not saying I do now, but I’m better at it now than I was. Anyway the 50 was a nice little amp.

    Hey Rob, i have a 2014 Charvel San Dimas and typically play in standard tuning with 9-46 gauge strings, and im now wanting to keep it in E flat. What gauge strings would you recommend given what i use for standard? Thanks!

    • @paroblynn
      @paroblynn  Год назад +2

      If you like the tension, probably 10s in 1/2 step down. When I use 9, I’m 9-42, and then 10-46 for 10’s. I’ve slowly been leaning towards lighter strings. I used to use 11/12/13 for E, Eb, D respectively. Now I’m to 9/10/11, and even have 8s on an e standard strat.
      I think you’ll like 10-46 in Eb.

      Actually, since i posted here I went on an experiment and put on a bunch of different brands/sizes. 10-52 ernie balls were WAY too big, and sounded muddy. I tried 10-46 and still a bit too tight, but i found a pair of stringjoys I had and they are freaking awesome. I just got done ordering a bunch more in different sizes, but I definitely am sticking with them,at least on this guitar. I think they are 9.5-46(husky). But I ordered a bunch more near that size, cuz i plan on trying them on my les pauls in standard tuning. I am really surprised how good they sound and feel. Thanks for your response!

    Hey Rob question had the Badlander mini got rid of it did not like it my question is is the mini rectifier loud enough for a full band I see they went on sale and I'm thinking of grabbing one thanks

    • @paroblynn
      @paroblynn  9 месяцев назад

      When you used the mini badlander, did you feel that was loud enough for your band? I feel like the mini rec and mini badlander have similar volume levels. I’ve used both live, with full bands, both in the PA and just stage volume. I feel like if you like that dual rec tone but want a smaller package, the mini Rec is hard to beat.

      @paroblynn I watched some other reviews and they said that the mini wreck and the full size pretty much sound about the same other than the full size tubes and I always put an mxr 10 banned in the loop I think it will be fine can't pass up the sale going on now

      @@gravelrocks5588 it’s similarities to a full size are quite remarkable. From a service standpoint it’s essentially a dual rec with a different power section and a SS rectification section.
