Metal will never get back to the mainstream. The purpose of the mainstream is keep regular people's mindset materialistic regardless on how ridiculous it will look like. Metal do have bands that had some materialistic lyrics and looks but they didn't last and yet the genre is broad and lyrics vary in way that makes you think and that was not good to the purpose of the mainstream. They don't want people to think, to have a critical sense about the world around them. That's why metal has been around its own independent stream of record labels and its own media, festivais, events, etc. Metalheads will be there all over the world, besides in America most metalheads will download music illegally and those will be the most passionate fans that will proudly wear t-shirts from bands that you've never heard about from places that you never considered that there would be metalheads. That sounds so weird...
