I have used paste wax for decades for all the things you have mentioned.. and since I have used it for all this time I just figured every one else knew about it.. (after all most of my friends are woodworkers..) But watching this reminded me that we have another generation of new wood workers out there that have never thought or been taught about this.. I had my business for about 25 years and was never a good teacher because I would always forget to teach the basics.. I am glad that your generation has picked up where we left off and is now show the youngers (on video nonetheless!) how to do it.. and you are remembering the basic.. well done son! Thanks for the video Mark! I can't recommend polishing with paste wax and finishing pad or 0000 steel wool enough. Not only does the surface get a nice soft sheen and the most amazing touch, it is also a fool-proof way to even out any imperfections in the finish.
Great video, love the finish paste wax gives even on top of poly. Quick tip, some waxes may take longer to dry and you might need to leave them to dull up and go matte first so that they can dry onto the surface. Some waxes say leave it 10-15mins some even 30mins so that the beeswax can dry and the solvent can evaporate. Then come back and buff it to a shine. 👍
I my self do not use paste wax on my projects. I found that over time the wax holds dirt and dulls the look over time. I personally burnish my projects and I sand to a very high grit to make a glass smooth surface. Great tips and awesome design!

Amazing. I have only been working towards building furniture, and setting up a shop in order to do so. For a couple years. And I had no idea. I do use paste wax on sleds and that sort of thing. I use it on almost any piece I send out the door but I use the Howard’s citrus shield premium paste wax if you ever can buy this paste wax and it triumphs over the other ones seriously try it out and also I always use a white 3-m finish woven synthetic pad on my small electric hand buffer to buff it of after I let it dry try that also and it makes it shines more and push it deeper into the wood as it heats it up with more friction and if you use the electric buffer the paste wax will last at least 2-3 times longer on the wood than buffing by hand

One thing never clear to me is whether paste wax is a sealer. Like, can this be a final step in finishing, or does it still need to be sealed. How well does wax do for humid or wet rooms like a bathroom?
random orbital sander with sponge velcro pad. put the shop cloth under it and apply light pressure downwards to buff. You only really need to hand buff the tight spots. Save your energy!
What do y'all think of with Johnson's Paste wax? I got a used almost full container and it seems to look nice. It will last me dang near forever with how little I use it. Is it still one of the best or is this stuff way more advanced of a paste wax?
Hey man you had some old videos about wood grain filler. Can you talk more about wood grain filling, why and when it’s needed, different filling options and techniques, maybe for different woods? I’m building instruments and those usually have very flat even finishes.
inside of drawers, anything works. Leave them raw, apply just wax, or apply the same top coat that you're using on the rest of it. Inside of drawers don't get too beat up, so viirtuaally anything will work just fine.
The bench looks awesome!! What are the black parts of the table. Looks like epoxy and classy but all I hear is usually hate for epoxy from true wood workers. Also I’ve used paste wax before on a finished table but throughout the days some spots made it into some wood grain and turned white, is that because I didn’t have a thick enough finish on it to fill the grain completely?

Hello... From Malaysia.... Can I use beeswax for a tabletop cutting board I'm making? Will it provide some degree of waterproofing? I was thinking to soak the wood in mineral oil, then after a few days and coats, cover in several thin coats of beeswax. Any thoughts?
Wax doesn't last long at all under those conditions (maybe an annual recoating, give or take), but the argument for it is that it's the first line of defense to protect the rest of your finish. It's easier to apply a fresh coat of wax than it is to strip and refinish, for example, a scratched or chipped urethane finish.
can i use car paste wax? like carnuba wax from 3m/turtle wax? my table already polyurethane finished i planning to sanded and polishising with car polish compound , do i need wax again for protection? does wax wear off if i use the table indoors? do i need to replaced wax periodically? sorry for too many questions TIA

Hey Mark, looking forward to trying your technique out on my project (walnut & hard maple).. you mention using Warus Oil (oil based) to bring out the color prior to adding Arm-R-Seal. Curious where/if/when Aqua Coat would come into play if using as a grain filler. If not you, does anyone know if Aqua Coat (water based) could be added AFTER applying Walrus Oil, then sanded down with 220 BEFORE using Arm-R-Seal... before finally getting to the finishing touch with wax paste? Trying to figure out how to work Walrus oil into the mix...

Mark quick question, you said you used 3/4 white oak ply. I’m wondering how your edges look beveled at the front. The drawers sit inside what it looks like a beveled edge. What would you recommend for the best Outdoor Lumber choice? I’m thinking of going with IPE and then some sort of stain or oil and sealed? Any recommendations? I noticed you were sealing your projects with Arm R Seal, but you sealed over the oil? I was told years ago to not seal over oil? Was I miss informed?
@@jcjohn782 Actually the bevel with a 22.5-degree edge bevel router bit, then softened over the corners and edges with a block plane and sanding. Ipe should be a good choice for the outdoor project, but it's a little hard to make a solid recommendation without knowing more about the project. In some situations it's not a sound idea to seal over an oil finish, but as long as the oil is cured you can put another finish on top of it with only a couple exceptions.

Waxing will help, but it'll be even better if you sand the polyurethane smooth first. You might have to apply and sand the polyurethane two ro three times to get it perfect.
I'm restoring a dark wood display cabinet (call it teak or walnut for arguments sake). I've nearly done sanding it down and I love the lighter wood. I did a test patch with teak oil and it instantly went super dark with a deep warm orangey colour. I mean that's also nice and makes the grain look a bit more holographic-ish...but I love the ashy sanded colour of the actual wood. So I assume I can't just leave it unfinished because it'll still oxidise or get sun damage or whatever? Any ideas on what can I do that will affect it the least? wax/soap/ some kind of varnish. Like I just want to protect it a little and keep the sanded colour
Usually a water based finish will have the least effect on the natural color, no enhancing. Wax would have a little more effect but would be less involved to apply it. So there’s that.
I'm using the past wax on a dining table and planning to apply 2 coats. Can the 2nd coat be applied 30 minutes after the 1st? And how long does it need to cure or sit without using the table? THANKS!

There was amazing me how companies slaps on a label on a bottle fills up with some mineral oil and some other voodoo and people Rave about it! It's if you can't buy mineral oil by itself! Or any of the other oils. I just find it funny. SDS sheets will tell you everything if you're interested! Columbus Michigan

Dust doesn’t seem to stick more fortunately. A damp rag is the best way to clean anything made from wood, but especially so if it’s waxed.

Usually a water based filler should be applied to bare wood. Then the finish on top of it.

Thanks Hal! There was no sophisticated reason for choosing one brand or type over the other. The one I used is the one that I had.

The plywood has a solid wood edge to cover up the core, about 1" wide. So that gave enough "meat" to make the bevel 👍

Could depend on the brand but it only needs 10 minutes or so. Basically the solvent in the wax needs to evaporate

Good catch. Was taught to go circular for a few moments and then with the grain.... no idea which way provides best result though

i boil my own linseed oil and mix a tiny amount of wax into the oil. another way to use the wax

God loves all of us so much He came in the flesh to die on the cross while we were still sinners so that if we choose to accept Jesus as our only Lord and Savior we may be gifted eternal salvation through His perfect sacrifice on the cross. Have a great year
