+ollie rocker No dude, it's called confidence, and comfortability with who you are. He deserves respect! I am grateful to be in his lifetime for teaching me so much throughout the 20 plus years he's rocked our worlds. nuff said.....
He knows that people are opinionated and are staunch critics and he has no patience in explaining himself to people who do not care to understand his manner of self expression. A little insecurity maybe?
Everyone has some kind of insecurity. Just another thing that makes each person unique. Some are easier to understand than others. I get Maynard. Could probably talk for hours with him, if he was up to it.
Well. Because I am in the industry, I did get to sit down with him, his wife, and a couple of other industry guys. We talked wine and AZ for about 4 hours. I assure you he was very funny and personable. Thankfully no one ever decided to talk about Tool etc. At the very end, as a postscript I thanked him for the music, but that's all I have to say about that. He is NOT a douche. I assure you.
He's a Taurus Mercury in his birth chart like myself. So I easily can relate to how he doesn't entertain nonsense conversations. He likes practical thinking that enriches the mind.
I was gonna comment something similar, but then add that i thought he nailed it, in fairness. A great interview both ways, and Maynard was very gracious and seemed to cut him some slack. MJK is, without doubt, a true modern day icon! Love the guys stuff with both Tool and APC, but also love the guy as a human being! I'd love to share a bottle of his wine and a chat with him. But really, as a huge lover of red wine, i would really like to sample some of the wine Maynard has produced. I really enjoyed watching this... \m/ (:o)
I really respect Carson for putting so much effort into this interview. So many people interview Maynard and just make Tool jokes. This is something Maynard cares about a lot, and it's so cool for them to talk about it
I think the "not a people person" thing is just part of his whole image for the public just like the costumes. He wants to give off an impression that he's a certain way and then live his own life with his own personal circles in peace.
That's real hair but he did wear a wig through this period. It was mainly so that he could take it off and walk amongst the crowd and no one would bother him.
Maynard talks about having a hard time doing some of the songs live but, I have seen A Perfect Circle three times and he sounded fantastic. When I saw them in San Antonio he said straight away that he and was sick and he apologized. When he spoke to us he sounded dreadful. Then he started singing and blew everyone's mind. He asked how it was after the first song and people were like... are you shitting me. Super small venue also.
Curt Nix I want to order some of his wines but am not a wine guy. your comment has clinched for me which to get. I am going to get 2 bottles. one to drink and one to keep for ever. thanks!
go to caduceus cellars online look for maynards name. i ordered some years back his second season wine, decent, now probably alot better. good luck enjoy
Curt Nix I see he has two labels, Caduceus and Merkin. I want to get one from each label. I also hear that Judith is a great wine. Do you know if this is true? Which label is Judith on?
Jerome is a weird old mining town at about 6000 ish elevation. Lived in Sedona for years very close, I cant believe he can grow good grapes there in the desert but I know nothing about wine. I love his seriousness about everything he does, its rare to see that anymore.
I love the fact that he's a no nonsense type of individual. No jokes no laughs he's serious about his endeavors. And expects you to take him seriously as well.
Maynard James Keenan is a name that people will for a long time to come, and I'm not talking about years I'm talking decade. Maynard is a genius in many ways, who names their vineyard after a genitalia wig for fuck sakes. Who thinks about this shit? MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN DOES!!
Why do you compare him to Radiohead? They're not the same category. Your taste in music is irrelevant. In case you didn't know, there's no such thing as decent music, it's subjective. Imagine this: you find out that Thom Yorke is an asshole. Does it matter to you or do you still like his music? I don't care if Maynard is the biggest jerk there is or his hair is ridiculous or he wears a stupid hat as long as he keeps making music. Although I wish he'd focus on Tool instead of Puscifer and wine.
It is true that he went through a rough period with his voice, but like any good vocalist, I'msure he got it seen to and took care of the concerns, as recently, he seems very on form. Sure, he's not singing quite the same, but few people do as they age. That said, we must also remember someone like this is a perfectionist and in this interview he is probably being quite hard on himself.
It's the smoking that fucks up the vocal cords. Hate having to dumb down my vernacular. I wonder about these guys love Maynard's art to death I even got a tattoo of the tool eye from an album cover on my arm that is a tat horror story cuz the guy butchered my arm but I was into tool 21 on Vicodin legally for over a year and loved the album opiate made me assume that someone in the band was on heroin for sure and many hallucinogens. Maybe it was with the times n now he's just into wine. There should be a poll that asks people what drug they tried first as teens, either if they started out with weed or alcohol for their first mind altering substance experience that the drug actually worked and wether they enjoyed the first experiences with it if they didn't quit and now as adults ask them what they prefer weed and other things like maybe an occasional entheogen like MDMA or shrooms or both lol. Or if they're the type that loves alcohol and that was their first experience as compared to those who had tried weed first. And a 2nd poll asking a person if they prefer weed or cigarettes? And ask again as a teenager did they try smoking weed or cigarettes first? It'd be interesting concept cuz the people that I've asked a few here n there & there appears to be a substantial number of people in common who (the hypothesis is that those who tried weed first end up liking it more than alcohol and tobacco as compared to those who tried alcohol and tobacco first. And there's even more evidence that supports those who did try alcohol and tobacco first as teens as compared to those who tried weed first end up that the alcoholics become more susceptible to it than those who tried weed prefer just weed and the occasional trip on safer substances which either have a very low chance of death or addiction except opiates as those are immune to race preference person etc they're discounted in the study since it's more of a blanket but I digress, the weed person is more often than not only on weed and after experimenting ends up with drugs of choice being low risk things like shrooms LSD and they avoid harder drugs like coke meth crack etc. but the alcoholics preferred the harder much more risk factor drugs and the injections or smoking hard nasty drugs. The relationship between what you tried first and eventually started doing it frequently between pot & alcohol and tobacco first and what they grew up to choose as a preference from just alcohol and weed) it's an interesting question I'd like to see answered between those who started and ended up with either weed or alcohol or hard drugs and not hard drugs.
"I don't even know what to say about Puscifer, except is so much fun to watch" That might be the biggest let down in the history of interviews. How about the music and the lyrics, which make up some of the best music that has ever been made? This fucking guy...
When Maynard flipped that bottle around that they were drinking. It said Caduceus. That shits on my family crest whats up guys whose the utlimate tool apc, and somewhat puscifer fan?
I know that MJK's not much of a ppl-person, but out of curiosity, why would Carson be as nervous as he is? I know he explains a bit, but he wasn't that elaborate... MJK seems like someone who'd actually be easy to talk to for some reason, as if he'd be like the bigger brother, best friend, even counselor like role or something. (?)
Shay Mary carson is a fan, thats why, and carson is also smart enough to know that maynard probably loathes most media types like him, but MJK keeps his cool and opens up a little bit, just enough to not sound bitter and jaded, which is quite a feat considering the state of the industry and progressive rock music
Its amazing to see his passion on this project. There are so many magnificent layers to this man. I am not a Tool fan, I am a Maynard James Keenan fan. Period.
actually. the issue is that maynard doesnt write the actual music to tool. he only writes the lyrics. tool isnt his band. its the band that hes in. everyone writes their own parts.
Good interview. Really liked that Carson Daly did not pressure anything on Maynard and did not make himself look like an idiot by laughing at his own jokes or anything like that. When interviewers do that, that is the reason MJK doesn't enjoy most interviews. Thanks for the upload.
Carson sounds like he's just watched the Blood Into Wine documentary and is asking him questions that were already answered in the film... pretty lame interview.
Brandon Wojciechowski i don't know if you've watched other interviews but it is extremely obvious he doesn't like to share about his band tool as much as his wine, and it's a topic few people know a lot about, whereas tool is all over.
It's interesting. I've really fallen for Tool's song H. And i saw a live video from 2002 where Maynard is just butchering the chorus, no distortion, whimpy tone and a slight crack here and there, not to mention that he chose not to do a lot of the higher notes, but only after having failed them first xD Wind the clocks back to 1995, opening for Primus, BEFORE Ænima is even put out yet. He sings it like an absolute champion. He was 31 years old at that point though ('95) so it does make sense. Fast forward back to 2002, a 38 year old man is trying to nail these super difficult notes, having done so for 7 years and shredded his throat in the process. My hopes are high for the new Tool album, but hopefully Maynard doesn't attempt to 'push the envelope' again xD
+Mad Dek honestly, it probably wasn't that he wasn't able to sing it. He probably just didn't feel like it. He's notorious for doing things like that. I saw them in 2010 and he belted it like a boss, so unless he had some serious vocal rehab between 02 and 10, it's more likely that he just felt like singing however he wanted to.
Though I'll admit I haven't listened to a whole lot of it, Tool's music just doesn't do it for me. I guess that's why I haven't listened to more of it. But I gotta say I can totally appreciate his honesty. Some guys just lower keys or have backup singers cover the tough notes. To hear him say he's not handling it well is straight up refreshing.
bwahaha mate chillax, having a go at his looks and attitude and everything. who gives a fuck about Radiohead?! BTW and who gives a fuck what he looks like its what he has to say. His music and character are not going to mix with everyone, I think that's what makes him unique(not jesus christ) peace
That was just a stupid statement. Tool is one of a kind, as is Radiohead. If you think they weren't original in their time you weren't paying attention. APC is just ok, let's be honest. It's good, but it's watered down Tool at the end of the day.
Radiohead...... Jesus dude I enjoy some of their music but its not amazing it wasnt new or different sounds for its time or different/original in anyway musically at all, and defiantly not innovative like tool or perfect circle.
I don't understand Maynard's hair I thought he went bald, he did have weird/cool hair back in 94 when I saw Tool in Bristol England it was the weird mohican shaved on the sides and long at the back..
James, you just showcased one of youtubes main problems: 'Someone disses someone/thing while saying something else is better' but instead of clearing things; maybe talking about what he dislikes, you start to diss the thing he talked well about. Radiohead is very often considered one of the most important bands of our time, alongside Tool. And if you look closely you might find similarities between the two. Cheers
Would be my dream to own a vineyard. But I want an apiary too. And I’d want to make mead/melomel. I all ready do on a small scale. There’s something magical about the process. Growing, fermenting/creating. It’s satisfying and gives meaning to life. Dirt, sun, water. This clock in and out 8-4 is soul extinguishing. People might not take him seriously as a producer but I think that his ability to take pleasure from the earthly connections is uplifting. Fame is such a fake business. It would be easy to forget what is real.
If you haven't had his wine it is really good. I live in Phoenix and belong to Eric's winery and I've been to Maynard's tasting room up in Jerome. Arizona Stronghold (owned by both Maynard and Glomski) has great wine also.
James Maynarda Keekn był przesłuchiwany w domu więc ja też tak chc ę :) oczywiście nie wymienię w wywiadzie anijednego imienia ni nzwiska,będziemy rozmawiac tylko o polityce
Interviews one of the most musically creative minds there is, talks about his wine interest. It is like Jesus came to town and you asked him his shoe size.
I COULD NOT do an interview with Maynard. Everything I say would probably annoy the piss out of him.
He is probably the biggest asshole, so you would offend him if you where in the same room.
+ollie rocker No dude, it's called confidence, and comfortability with who you are. He deserves respect! I am grateful to be in his lifetime for teaching me so much throughout the 20 plus years he's rocked our worlds. nuff said.....

Right on. Thanks

Maynard IS a people person...if you want to talk meaningful subjects that is.
He's a pretentious smug douche, you're a fanboy, period

I'm glad he's in Arizona. Smart move.
such a sophisticated mind! I wish I could understand a glimmer of MJK thoughts !
haha, maynard disciples are so full of shit!
+Machete Moonlight full of shit?
I just saw a concert from tool a couple months ago, my first one. Damn it was so good but you really couldn't hear James singing that well
1:14 Does ANYBODY know this song?
The Noose - A Perfect Circle ;)
Wig.
Interviewer talks too much. Questions are too LONG!
Interviewer: "why Arizona?"
Maynard: "I live there."
god just the simplicity of that responce kicked me in the guts
Maynard's wig game is the best in the business 😂😂
Some of these rappers and models need to get it together.
Maynard has the voice of majestic unicorns.
Brianna The Patient yes he does ❤️
I really respect Carson for putting so much effort into this interview. So many people interview Maynard and just make Tool jokes. This is something Maynard cares about a lot, and it's so cool for them to talk about it
Is that Amy from Big Bang Theory?
Haha you made me laugh my ass off
Stephen Johnson But so much pretty 😂
I would like to say thank you to Maynard James Keenan...Despite what everyone says, he just stayed true to himself and did what he wanted.
I did too, and now I am poor, broke, and fucked. I wish I would have lied more.
I think the "not a people person" thing is just part of his whole image for the public just like the costumes. He wants to give off an impression that he's a certain way and then live his own life with his own personal circles in peace.
Sometimes he's bald sometimes he looks like he's been growing his hair for years. I don't get it. is he wearing a wig in this interview?
I was going to post the same thing! It has to be fake but looks so real all the roots and everything.
That's real hair but he did wear a wig through this period. It was mainly so that he could take it off and walk amongst the crowd and no one would bother him.
Luciffrit i remember in a podcast he said it was a character he played when he was with a perfect circle. now he does that with puscifer for example.
Alice K. Heh, he probably changes his story interview to interview.
I think Maynard is suffering from male pattern balding.
Maynard talks about having a hard time doing some of the songs live but, I have seen A Perfect Circle three times and he sounded fantastic.

I wish he came out with this wine when I was an active alcoholic. I would have drank A LOT of it. But now I'm sober...wha wha whaaaaa
+eastervan1 Aint life a bitch.
Matt K and then I died
Sober. Lol
TheDonkeyExploded during prison sex is the worst especially when you're 46 and 2
Don't be sober be moderate, I'd honestly hate Maynard if it weren't for the fact that he's so pragmatic and moderate.
I would like to try Maynard's wine too! Looks good!
Chupacabra is great and strong
Curt Nix

blablabla blah grapes grow about anywhere. Everyone grows them here in Kentucky
I like how he treats Carson Daly like he's nobody.
ClayMation I really disagree.
Saint Jabroni I felt like he kinda liked him lol

Made a pilgrimage up to his winery last year and bought a couple bottles , very good stuff!!!!
he's very intelligent, mysterious and he might not be a fan of the cameras
He's a cat.

Trevor Philips I am. N what’s on ur crest? A logo or the word? Ask me anything
Oh, calm down haters.
Don't drink his wine and go for the Richards Wild Irish Rose / Boone's Farm - ala Tom Waits.
He's Maynard, what did you expect?
I could watch/hear Maynard all day
i love him

He's using his imagination to excel in life without the restrictions of religion and politics. He's following who he is. He is true to himself.
Would love to work on his farm-
Toast throat, there's your answer folks, that's why the new album ain't out yet.
No there was a lawsuit and court problems
TheAlpacaAlliance that problem is long gone. if he wants he will tour again.
killingroots well I guess we're just gonna have to sit here and wait some more... ;_;
actually. the issue is that maynard doesnt write the actual music to tool. he only writes the lyrics. tool isnt his band. its the band that hes in. everyone writes their own parts.
BrandonJ TheBJ Well they're in the studio now and they say they're making progress, if we're lucky we might get a new album at the end of this year.
Good interview. Really liked that Carson Daly did not pressure anything on Maynard and did not make himself look like an idiot by laughing at his own jokes or anything like that. When interviewers do that, that is the reason MJK doesn't enjoy most interviews. Thanks for the upload.
its 9:50 am i'm drinking wine playing my bass and watching this .....life is awesome
Can't decide if I give a thumbs way up for Maynard. Or thumbs down for Carson. The singer of Tool talking to a tool
Carson sounds like he's just watched the Blood Into Wine documentary and is asking him questions that were already answered in the film... pretty lame interview.
So better prepared with MJK
He's sarcastic witty be prepared smart
I want some of Caduceus.
I love his personality...He is an amazingly talented man and much respect for MJK.
Interview with Maynard, lets talk about wine. WTF?
Brandon Wojciechowski i don't know if you've watched other interviews but it is extremely obvious he doesn't like to share about his band tool as much as his wine, and it's a topic few people know a lot about, whereas tool is all over.
My post was of surprise not judgment I'm well aware of Maynards obscurity. I'm a die hard tool fan.
Plus, the more U know, the more U learn it’s his #1passion alongside puscifer
Ok, so envy , lust , and materialistic endeavors fueled thine lips and hips. Congrats .
Well, that's not necessarily true. He could lie to your face just to fuck with you and you wouldn't notice.
i love how he uses words in his songs
It's interesting. I've really fallen for Tool's song H. And i saw a live video from 2002 where Maynard is just butchering the chorus, no distortion, whimpy tone and a slight crack here and there, not to mention that he chose not to do a lot of the higher notes, but only after having failed them first xD Wind the clocks back to 1995, opening for Primus, BEFORE Ænima is even put out yet. Brought to you by studio potato recordings.
stopped reading on "radiohead".
You can only buy it if you live in The States. They don't ship outside.
I wanna wig like that
I think I'm going to jones to death waiting for the next Tool album to come out!!!!
Still holding up?
My throat is toast as well, fucking sucks...
Though I'll admit I haven't listened to a whole lot of it, Tool's music just doesn't do it for me. I guess that's why I haven't listened to more of it. they are the led zepplin of my time ( im 36). as far as song writing goes, Tool is at a level few bands reach.
Listen to them more and you'll get it.
Peace :)
Wouldn't compare them to LED Zeppelin. They are way opposite from LZ. If anything I'd compare them to Pink Floyd.
The mars volta was our led zeplin :( but they broke up
Daniel DeMayo TMV wasn't even influenced by led zep.
TOO MUCH MONEY AND TOO MANY DRUGS = THIS GUY
That is one of the ugliest wigs I ever done seen
I LOVE him
Maynard is the only reason I know Carson Daly still exists. Thought he disappeared after MTV went completely to shit.

the roman empire planted vinyards in the new places they conquered and wine production helped pacify the conquered peoples. mjk fashy confirmed lol.
I wonder what stage of psychological developent maynard is at...on the spirla dynamics model
the first song playing is by black rebel motorcycle. they are fucking awesome, you guys should check them out
Dont confuse being shy with someone that thinks before he speaks. He is not like the rest of them that spew bullshit onto everyone
he owns it not for capitol gain. he owns it because its something he enjoys, not exactly being a socialist. its just exercising a hobby
