Maynard wanted to be a comedian as well. He did standup at a couple house shows with a genius comedian known as Bill Hicks, and Hicks did some standup during Lollapalooza before Tool came on. If Hicks were alive today, Maynard might be doing something else. It seems he had a big impact on Maynard's life for a little while there

I'm 26 and I've been a TOOL fan for over half my life. I could really give two shits less what Maynard says or does on or off camera, but the art/music he's put out into this world has affected me uniquely and positively. For that, I thank TOOL. And to each their own. Whether or you love, or love to hate MJK and TOOL, they don't care, (neither do I.)

Jumping up and down some catch phrase- i think maynard aiming at Nirvana then with smells like teen spirit in a way and all those over kinds of songs. Songs that major music labels just consume and produce and produce

His funniest joke ever was when after he wrestled the fan to the ground on stage and sat on him for 10 minutes a guy comes out starts seaking back up. After the songs Maynard gets off the random fan and anounces the name of the back up vocalist and goes "No I'm not talking about the guy on the ground, but the guy singing..... The guy on the ground was my boyfreind". I thought that was pretty funny.

Not really sure where you are coming from. There is no general consensus on drug taking, they are not simply good or bad. The meaning is singular for each person. But more importantly, what makes you think he still does drugs? Any comment which alludes to it here may be bullshit not to mention several years old in some cases, what makes you think he is being sincere? I know this is your opinion but to suggest it undermines what he stands for seems quite unfounded.
lol... maynards views are genious not weird. he loves the world but also understands and lashes out at unfair and shallow behavior amonst ignorance, even the ignorance he finds in himself. hes a being that has transcended normal thought at one point of his life and is only lately looking at the world from a happy perspective rather than an angry or transcended point of view. i think ever since his mother died it brought maynard to a point in his life where it was all about the things that matter

Chance can and always DOES happen. Nothing can stop that. I'm just not down with reaping millions while spitting upon the very foundation of a system (and it's people, meaning the fans) that made those millions for you. It smacks of ungreatfulness an arrogance. I stick to my little club bands where the artists are approachable and will shake your hand, show grattitude for your support, and treat you like a human being.
I understand where the band is coming from with their sort of, anti-corporate america stance and loathing of traditional marketing that goes on regarding music. HOWEVER, it seems like a waste of time to be so angry and consumed by it. Music shouldn't be *that* difficult. Just make the records you like making and shut the fuck up about Britney and whatever else is going on that you don't care for.
I didn't say anything about what MJK "believes in." I said I couldn't care less what he does that doesn't have to do with the music. I'm just giving props for the influences the music has had on me. I'm tired of people opening their pie hole to do nothing but bash a band that other people like. If you love it, shout it out to the world, if you hate it, that's fine, do the same, but why look up Tool shit on youtube if you hate them so much in the first place? It's a simple equation.

It's how we interprate the music and what he says. When I was reading some of these comments you can tell that they were making points but they didn't match to what it was they were talking about. Maynard is the fuckin' man. Everything he touches is pure gold. The man is incapable of putting out bad music. I don't think he could write/sing a shitty song if he tried. Even something so whacked out like Cuntry Boner, is still completely awesome. What a fucking talent, and it seems to run in the family because his son has an amazing voice and is a very talented cellist.

I think that he means that the things that a person doesn't like about whoever they choose to dislike , has more to do with your perception and what you infer from their actions, than what they meant their actions to imply. We never really know what somebody else thinks or means , only what we THINK they think or mean.

I would love to meet him one day, though I realize he's reclusive. I don't mean like me go to his house or anything, but...for example, if I were at work and he came in as a customer. I'd try to be nonchalant and not say anything about being a fan or loving his work or anything, just coexist as two people...unless I fainted.
to claim you know more about Tool thsn anyone or just some other person shows how closed your mind really is. no one really is going to care what you know or don't know, its just enjoying the music and gaining your own idea of what the message is, thats really the beauty of Tool's work, you can take different views on it and there's nothing wrong with that.
ive spent the last 2+ years trying to figure out what tool was really about. ive read magazines, album info, listened to countless hours of this, search mind and body, internet, delved into ancient geometry, and cosmics and all i had to do was watch this video to hear him say that it is connecting with the music. wow.

maynard is one of those rare, super-witty people that can just do whatever the fuck they want and still be cool. always knows the right thing to say.
Every interview with him is funny because they always pair him up with an airhead and it's like einstein explaining physics to a dog. No one's on his level.
To have godlike status is to be worship as a more respected human. You shouldn't take what people say to heart. I myself am not much of a Christian, I believe god is around and I have Buddhist principles as well. I see man as man. We are all god, we are all animals, and we are all viruses. It is up to us to find what path we should take.

I guess you couldn't find or didn't hear about Maynard's changes to the lyrics of AEnima at the Dallas show a few months ago. Replace "learn to swim" with "got to piss" and you've got the result of Maynard holding it for quite some time. I wish i had a video of it, it was quite possibly the greatest end to a show I have ever seen.
If you don't like Tool then don't listen to them and don't bother the rest of us with it. We don't care why you can't get over yourself and your uncontemplated judgments and perceptions, and hypocritical lables, and your need to seperate people into groups so you can press your views on them.

4:25 is some fuckin' awesome jiu-jitsu right there. THAT's how you deal with fans that reach the stage: flip them MMA-style and then clutch them for an awkwardly long period of time. Then sit on them for awhile. Love that it still didn't even throw him off re: vocals. True musician right there.
@Udthinkthat Couldn't agree more mate. The more I learn about this group the more I'm blown away. I've been totally in love with bands in the past... but never felt such a level of respect as I do for these blokes. They represent what 'Music' is all about in such a brilliant and intelligent way

I think it was hilarious. The guy got up on stage, he obviously wanted attention. He got the attention he wanted, and Maynard got to have fun. Not to mention, the kid is lucky Maynard didn't have one of the security guards take him down, they're rougher than Maynard was.
Maynard is VERY arrogant; however he has the right to be. He is the muhammad ali of music in my opinion. He once called every band who emulates TOOL, "idiots" literally. I love maynard and his ego, it suits him well. Plus we all know the best kind of ego is an ego waffle!
