    Thanks nurdrage, since the beginning. My donation is intended on behalf of amateurs everywhere that want to contribute but might not be able to. Your pitch-shifted voice has been my catharsis during my drive to shitty jobs listening to you through headphones and also my impeteus to pursue amateur chemistry, much to the chagrin of my wife and inevitably the US ATF (great story). Rock on man.

      I really think if you still have the footage you should give us that fire from chemistry video including the failures! Knowing that something failed is just as important to scientific knowledge as knowing something that works! Similarly, footage from the furnace that you destroyed would be useful if you framed it as an exercise in what NOT to do, to share with us what problems you had and how to avoid them, as you still work towards resolving those issues for a future video, as you noted in this one.

    • @NurdRage
      @NurdRage  5 месяцев назад +10

      the broken furnace is definitely going to be part of the copper refining video. The screw up was pretty small though, so it doesn't deserve a separate video. But it was catastrophic.

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@NurdRage Fair enough! I was just thinking that it would help you create more videos out of the footage you're getting, so you can have a few in the pocket to release between other videos, which would help with the algorithm; I'd never recommend deliberately chopping up videos, but when you already have a bunch of footage from an experiment that is still being processed... Just feels like it might be a good idea to do a smaller video on what's already been done, instead of waiting for everything to be done and just doing one video on the topic; sorta like your sodium metal experiment videos.

      From the sound of the microphone, you likely have a ground loop issue in the analog section of your recording chain. It would be worth it to try an inexpensive ground loop isolator before buying a new microphone. Thanks for all your wonderful content!

    • @RaExpIn
      @RaExpIn 5 месяцев назад +1

      Nice idea! It is actually possible to just do the reaction for silane on a fireproof surface like a metal sheet or a brick in the open. It just leads to a lower yield due to reactions on the outside of the mixture. I'd guess and iron crucible might work and could be reused, depending on the scale :)

    Here's the thing NurdRage... I've been watching for a long time. To me, you have always come across as professional and knowledgeable, even when working with the most cobbled together setups. You always seem purposeful and deliberate. You don't dance in front of the camera, and don't really try to add bells and dog whistles. I does not matter, the expertise and enthusiasm for the topic shows through. What you do needs no embellishment. At least not in my case. You teach, you explain, you demonstrate the importance of all the steps that lead to the "climactic result," rather than just trying to get to the punchline. Again, that is my view. I have always loved what you do. If you have it in you to do more, by all means! I will enjoy each video. If you need to take care of your own life, by all means. Your real life is more important than any video I, or anyone else, might enjoy. Just know that what you do is enjoyed and appreciated. What you have done has been enjoyed and appreciated. Anything you may do in the future will continue to be so, but you do you first! The ride has been worth it to see a chemistry "youtuber" refine a fairly novel synthesis of elemental sodium. Who does that on RUclips instead of in a lab. That alone was worth it. Take care of yourself, best wishes, and 73!

    My fave from this year was the one where you did precision evaluation. I'm an experimental physicist by trade and teach it to students and it's like porn to me. Except not just _safe_ for work but actually *required* for work. Pure sciencegazm! Totally worth the Patreon subscription

    Salute to the OG chemtuber! I was inspired by you and started a channel 15 years ago, but then abandoned it due to various reasons and took a decade-long break before starting a new channel. Keep up your good work and don't worry about the hiatus, we will all wait for your good content!

    It's fantastic that channels such as yours and the others you showed exist for those who are great at it and those like me who enjoyed general chemistry but are still traumatized by organic chem. ;) Can't wait to see what comes down the pipe(tte) this year!

    You've been a major inspiration for me to pursue amateur chemistry. An hour ago I was salting the water out of 1,4-dioxane because after almost 2 years of working towards it I FINALLY got the alcohol-catalyzed magnesium reduction reaction to work, and it's time to clean up the results. I've watched every one of your sodium related videos many, many times in order to get to this point, and I've learned a lot from this pursuit... Such as cheap hotplates and mantles are cheap (and their magnets seem to hit the curie point at modest temperatures), you can find extremely good deals on used hotplates that have very minor issues, round bottom flasks are impossible to stir with ambitious amounts of solid materials in them, poorly stirred flasks will get eaten by hot NaOH, erlenmeyer flasks work much better (and especially so with a large stir bar), powdered magnesium is surprisingly difficult to find cheap, and cheap magnesium turnings actually work (but incredibly slowly).
    You were on hiatus when you inspired me. Seeing you back at it, and being a supporter of that, gives me a such a great feeling. Please keep at it!

    I've been here since the start and I don't see myself going anywhere. Thank you for showing me that chemistry has many forms. Without that I'd honestly have given it up since all we were shown in school was the math not the demonstrations.
    I do remember asking you via dms when I was younger if that was your voice or a filter back when you could still direct message.

    Thanks for continuing to make excellent content for us. You're still among the best of the amateur chemistry youtubers, and you've been an inspiration for many. The information you've provided to us has been absolutely invaluable. The information, and videos you produce have only increased in quality over the years in my opinion. Your pyrimethamine project is still one of my favorite series on youtube; I've watched it several times. I hope you can do something similar again. Maybe a series on synthesizing all the neurotransmitters from scratch? Keep it up man! Can't wait to see what you have in store for us this year.
