    Today we're talking Beyonce's Act II: Cowboy Carter. A time was had. We'll talk about the artful blend of genres including country (obviously), rock, hip-hop, gospel, house, and so many others. We'll also talk about the featured artists including Dolly Parton, Linda Martell, Willie Nelson, Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Miley Cyrus, and so many more. We'll also talk about how the songs are connected, and the 'story' it feels to me like they're telling. And of course, I'll try to give you my faves.

    “Daughter” is woefully underrated. It’s dark yet warm and beautiful. I can see the visuals giving Catholic Church, roses, old art, stained glass, water, stripped down yet beautiful. Like I want to listen to this song in a bathtub with rose petals and candles lit around me. I love when she gives opera

      Yes, mama Tina was born “Celestine Beyoncé”. But it’s because the hospital misspelled her last name. Tina says that when she asked her mom (Beyoncé’s grandmother) why she didn’t have the hospital change it back to Beyincé, the hospital told her that she should be glad she has a birth certificate (racist south…). And that’s why the rest of the family and Beyoncé’s cousin Angie’s last name is Beyince.

    I also think Jolene is speaking from Tina’s pov on the infedelity in her marriage. Just because she slightly mentions that marriage troubles in 16 carriages and she says a creole b*tch from Lousiana (just like how she refers to her mother in Formation). Especially because daughter that follows it, and the fact that Beyoncé has a thing for killing off her dad in her country songs. That and the fact the album seems to have originally been titled after Tina’s original maiden name.

    • @bdhu2001
      @bdhu2001 5 месяцев назад +12

      I love that you said you aren’t forcing yourself into that box.
      Beyoncé uses her albums to tell a story. It’s like watching a movie. You wouldn’t want to come in 1/4 of the way through, leave and then come back to watch the end or have people to tell you the best part and then go in just to watch that part of the movie. It’s weird, because I didn’t realize that until I watched someone react to her entire Lemonade album recently. Having said all that, let me give you an overview of the movie that is Cowboy Carter:
      This whole album is in response to how she was treated at CMA. American Requiem is telling them about themselves. She researched and it took over 5 years for her to develop this album. The album is full of history and reclaiming music that black people/ slaves started, but were kicked out of once it became popular.
      Blackbird was written by Paul McCartny to give black women/girls hope during the Civil Rights movement . He saw how they were being treated. That’s why all the singers on the song are black women. The others are four black female country singers.
      Let’s just point out that Country radio has an issue with playing black artists so Beyoncé told everyone about her new venture during the Super Bowl then dropped two country songs. The Bey Hive activated and most country stations played her music. But to top it off, her album is presented as it’s own radio station with country legends presenting her music.
      This Album was meant to be Act I. This was Beyoncé’s response to how she was treated at the CMA. The requiem funeral procession was trying to let us know that Country Music was rooted and started by blacks. If you look into the history, it started by people putting on black face for minstrel music making fun of the slaves with their banjos. Then people who are credited with starting country, came to black street artists to learn their craft. Once it became big, black people were pushed aside and they started gate keeping the genre.

    What I wasn’t expecting was for the album to be such a commentary on genre. It invites the listener to question and critique the very idea of genre itself. The segues explain how genre is sometimes confining, but ultimately arbitrary once you toy with its conventions. The bending and blending of multiple genres on this album makes it harder to categorise, and that was the point. It’s attempting to rebel and reframe the parameters of genre, and seems to have a didactic purpose to educate the listener to do the same [so they can enjoy “unique listening experiences”, as Linda said].
    Also, I have to mention, the motif of Beyoncé holding a funeral for "big/old ideas" in 'American Requiem', (be them about genre, politics, or race), burying them, saying “Amen”, and moving forward, *whilst the music on the song serves as a tangible requiem to the interred notions!* 🤯 so clever! What a sharp incisive method of transmuting those sentiments into musical expression. It takes “say it with the music” to a whole new level! You could write a university dissertation on this album, the references, the metaphors, the allegories, it’s extremely dense. It will completely go over some people’s heads, but personally, I was impressed, and I’m not at all surprised it’s already become her most critically acclaimed work. 👏

    • @eternityriley1833
      @eternityriley1833 4 месяца назад +4

      @@wzwzwz They definitely didn't mention anything about destroying genres, and neither has Beyonce. The commentor's point is about not being confined and restricted by genres, which was Beyonce's goal as an artist that's pushing herself, trying new things, and evolving. Also, specifically in the case of country music in the US, being gatekept from music by racists that your ancestors and community pioneered in the first place a couple centuries ago. Which she references some of those artists in the album. She pays homage to the stories you're referring to. The stories of countless Black rock & roll and country musicians throughout history that have been forgotten or purposely erased, people who laid the foundation for what she's doing now. She's specifically highlighting their stories, allowing people to learn about important Black artists they never heard of through history as well as the history of many genres that were created/pioneered by Black people. She's sharing those stories, in addition to putting the spotlight on current country artists which she featured on the album. Their numbers have all gone up exponentially too. Ultimately, it's not about "destruction" but freedom (of expression and artistry) and not only for Beyonce, but it's also her wish for other artists who feel confined and held back.

    I hear Alligator Tears being about her relationship with her dad.
    In Life is But A Dream, she says that he knew she always needed his approval but he wouldn’t give it to her and would keep pushing her. This, for a long time, became her primary motivator to excel and achieve.
    The song talks about someone constantly moving the goal post, as Matthew would. Also the line “how does it feel to be adored”, could speak to her realising that her adoration of him and need for his approval keeps/kept her in this cycle.
    I also think it’s reflective of wider social pressures/expectations on her as an artist. With the constant changing goal posts of what she should be ‘not black enough, then too black’ etc…
    Patterns in early relationships with parents are often transferred into how we interact with the world as an adult. Perhaps because she had this from so young with Matthew, it’s hard for her to not keep trying to fulfil these impossible social expectations of her.

    Of course Beyonce is a huge Prince fan.
    Thanks for pointing that out.
    Also- Beyonce is challenging everyone's perception of country music and it's influences and as to who it belongs too.
    Very cleverly she neither white washes it's history, but doesn't black wash it neither.
    Just as sure as she interlaces this album with samples from Linda Martell, Chuck Berry, but also hosts samples from Hank Williams, Patsy Kline and I swear I heard Loretta Lynn as well!

Us moms are out here having a time of it lmao 😆😓 Okayy, so when I heard those first two tracks she released, I immediately thought of Patsy Cline and how much Bey's energy mirrors hers... I sure called it! She sampled her, and that is gawgessss. NO ONE, can say a thing about this album too when Willy freaking Nelson himself featured on there AND directly edorsed it. I mean... that is countries cool uncle. AND, more angelic voices than Bey and Dolly combined, would be nearly impossible to find.. MAN, this year is going to fantastic, Bey really got Dolly on a trap track. And WAIT, I think she's referencing the movie, "Coyote Ugly." Hear me out now, it's about a country girl finding her way through a hectic showstyle industry and breaking through despite the challenges and her relationship with her father... could it be? 🤔 Lastly, did anyone peep that Telépop Musik type, lofi, somehow cuntry... trance?? I was so gagged by the artistry throughout every single note and symbology she weaved into every thread of this werk. I feel like this album is a whole tapestry. Could you imagine how utterly gorgeous that would be! If she had someone make her a wall sized rug with weaving representing every track?? Oh man, I can see it now in my head, the texture and everything. And yeahh, as a mom who had a bad childhood, I really, truly felt every word there. One thing I have ALWAYS said and wholeheartedly felt is that Bey is a fiercly wonderful mom. Every little detail ppl clock, from gently teaching her things behind the scene, to how she treats her children when she thinks no one is watching. I mean, she has never ever exploited those kids, and that is so rare these days in the industry. It warms my heart to know tho tho JayZ and Bey have had their own faults and darkness in their pasts and businesses, they lead those children through the light and ADORE them. One can not say Jay doesn't love those babies. And Bey has always given the air of Lioness, but her becoming a mom made me see her pride blossom.

The famous country music family “The Carter Family” would visit black churches and neighborhoods and ask pick melodies/lyrics from the pastors and would go into towns and ask the people mostly black to sing family songs they knew. They are known as some of the greatest “Collectors” of music for a that reason. I Almost wonder if it’s from the perspective of a side chick. Because she’s says “I whisper secrets in the backseat” and ends the chorus with “you should let me ride shotgun” like a plea to be upfront and public. You may have later noticed, but in "Daughter" she does address the man/lover in describing the fantasy in her head. She apparently fantasized about attacking the woman/Jolene and possibly murdering/drowning the man ("how long can he hold his breath before his death?"). She then asks God to help her control the fantasies in her head. "Daughter" is so cinematic, it's almost like hearing a movie through it's soundtrack wrapped up in one song. Extremely creative and powerfully delivered.

    II Most Wanted gave me chills. Like Miley and B’s voices when they harmonize feel like a warm hug. Just for Fun I also love! Like really no skips, every song is a masterpiece. Also Mrs. Tina’s maiden name is Beyoncé, her mother was one of the first round of black people to get birth certificates and the last name really is Beynice. They requested to fix it but were told be lucky you got a birth certificate. Mrs. Tina that story on a podcast.

      It is county but not traditional country. It's infused with rock, gospel, hip pop and house. It's like rock, you have heavy metal, soft rock, alt rock and if you go back to late 90's to early 00's rock that that heavy hip pop influence e.g limp bizkit, linking park even kid rock to mention a few. Overall the album is genre blending/bending.
