Today we're talking 2014 pop trends, the main one being the obvious retro influence in a lot of the music. Truly, this trend started with several popular 2013 releases, and definitely carried over into the new year, making 2014 a very memorable year for pop. We'll talk about songs included Pharrell's Happy, Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk, Ariana Grande & Iggy Azalea's Problem (as well as Bang Bang w Ari, Jessie J, and Nicki Minaj), Taylor Swift's Shake It Off, and so many more. Honeslty, I'd give anything to go back.

Kinda like you were saying about not knowing most the songs on the charts nowadays, I feel like 2014 was truly the last time where EVERYONE was listening to the radio. I was in middle school so everyone’s parents were still driving them to school and everyone knew what songs were big that month. It’s probably nostalgia speaking, but mainstream music culture hasn’t been the same since 😭

I'm not from US (so I don't know ohow is there) but here I been paying attention to the music that sound on shops and restaurants, mostly is music from 2014-2016 but no song from TikTok or any artist that came popular after being viral in the app. Doja Cat is the exception to this rule

@@naomi.cannibalI sure was! lol, I mean being born in the early 2000s was cool, and the culture of 2016-2019, while I hated it then, now I kinda miss it. There are certain things five six years ago I was so obsessed over, now nobody is.
But being a teen in the early 2000s, I feel like I really would’ve liked it. Maybe that’s because that’s the in era/thing to be nostalgic about now, but a lot of it was just that damn iconic

To me, 2014 was the last memorable and iconic year for mainstream music. I don't know how to explain it but there was something in the air during that year lmao. The music was fun, diverse, lots of retro influences while still sounding fresh and new and yeah if you look at the music charts for that year, almost all of the songs there are recognizable even if it only reached top 40.
While I feel like we had somehow of a renaissance from 2022 onwards, it cannot compare to the sheer magnitude of the hits 2014 made.
Music before 2015 felt a lot more bombastic and big you know what I mean? Now the majority of mainstream music currently is just TikTok music and music that really only appeals to people under like 30 or something

When think of 2014 music I don’t think of pop I think of rap and the rise of TRAP. That was an era. Pops decline was lowkey starting to be felt. The heavy hitters were leaving or switching genres. Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, Beyonce, and the newcomers were coming (Taylor, Ariana, etc..)
Meanwhile rap was on a RISE. Iggy, Nicki, Drake, and a bunch of rap one hit wonders were dominating. The party playlist use to be so lit

I never think of 2014 like that! The only project I think of is Lana’s Ultraviolence. But I can imagine that it’s for a lot of people an iconic year in music. For me that’s 2009/2010

It was one of the few years of the 10's that i really liked, exactly because of that retro vibe. I love Ariana pop from that era but i became a huge fan of Bruno Mars. I always liked him but that era was his prime for me.❤

Do you think it’s cause we are so distracted by our phones and social media and sort of living vicariously through different era, aesthetics, fashion and music that there are no “movements” in culture. Everyone is sort of living in their own nostalgic echo chamber of movements of the past.
@@bez2215 why did this comment make me sad? But on a more serious note yeah, there’s no more proper movements now or newer subcultures (aesthetics don’t count) and a lot of music is just doing what’s already been done before without trying to do something new or innovative

2013 had a little disco resurgence like Daft Punk with Get Lucky and Katy Perry with Birthday, and also that one annoying song Sugar by Maroon 5. 2014 being the year of retro and funk is like a natural progression from there.

For me 2014 was like the peak of the 2010-2015 era when RUclipsrs were simple teens showing their daily normal routines when singers had great collabs and pop music was happy and you could dance to it shows like PLL and TVD were great and book to movies adaptations like the Hunger games and The fault I’m out stars that era was like eternal summer i was in high school with my 4 best friends going to pep rally’s and school dances during that time so It definitely holds my youth it’s so nostalgic
While you were talking I thought”oh you really get old and stop listening to new songs” but then I remember now it’s mostly about an algorithm picking for you and it just bursts my mind! It’s so personalized and not necessarily “new” music, that how can you as a collective have a whole list of songs to “share”? TikTok I guess 😂

Follow up comment. I wonder when R&B will have its comeback. It was honestly one of the dominant genres of the 90s - early 2000s in mainstream music especially Darkchild's style of R&B production. We did have those in Ariana's new album but I wonder when will it fully take off and dominate the charts again
R&b during the 90s and 2000s was PEAK. Would be interesting if r&b ever gets its comeback however I hope it’ll be real r&b instead of those auto tuned pop-ish trap ones

Whew!! This was an era!!! I was freshman/sophomore during this time and it was so nostalgic! I remember damn near ALL OF THESE SONGS! The funk era was very prominent and the 80s sound as well!! These were songs just automatically made you dance regardless how annoying or repetitive they may be! Nothing but good times during this era!

I remember when the first week back to school in fall 2014 me and my friend was talking about how the most popular song were all retro and full of saxophone, this was also around the time I got into the RUclips channel postmodern jukebox so the retro part was heavy that year and then 2015-2016 came the resurgence of dancehall music that mixed in EDM and house music or as the mainstream media tried calling it “tropical house” 😒😂.

i feel like music from 2013-2018 took a lot of notes from the past especially the 80s but i think it's because people were glamorizing a time in america that didn't really exist for any of us, but that we would like to have imagined, because we are all watching the slow decay of our incomes and democracy 😍🙂↕️

I mean this in the least pretentious way, but I consider 2014 the peak of pop music and I've since stopped really caring about pop music after that period. Aside from the trap wave in 2015 and trap/emo rap renaissance in 2017/2018, I've started to pivot away from the mainstream towards indie/alternative and previous decades (e.g. 2000s, 90s, 80s, etc.)
