Today we're talking Beyonce's self-titled album, which we all know was dropped with no warning or announcement whatsoever. It's one of Beyonce's darkest and most experimental record yet, containing songs about her relationship with Jay-Z, motherhood, and her career. We'll talk singles like Drunk In Love, XO, Pretty Hurts, and Partition. We'll also talk about other poular songs on the album like Flawless and Blow. And then of course, we'll talk the Mrs. Carter World Tour, the On the Run Tour, and some of the controversy caused by the singles. It's one of Beyonce's most memorable works and eras for several reasons, including the surprise release, popularizing visual albums, changing album release dates to Fridays, and of course the infamous Grammy snub where Beck took home the Grammy for album of the year over Beyonce.

Beyoncé’s self titled era is one of those eras that you just had to be there! this was the era that solidified her as a legend! at the time artists were just dropping bunch of singles but Beyoncé was able to release a whole body of work with visuals for every song

This album release is enough proof that there will never be another Beyoncé. At least not for a *very* long time. Her vocals, dancing, performance, and mystique cannot be replicated. Literally changed the game. The visuals. The surprise. The spectacle. The Friday release. The classy raunchiness. The glamour. The surfbordt. None of the newer girls are touching her on her worst day!!
Also Haunted and Mine are *criminally* underrated.

This album unfortunately came out when I was in middle school, so the themes and impact went entirely over my head. Now, I look back at this era as a grown woman who has been educated in feminist theory and more experience under my belt, and I'm so grateful for this project. It was a risk, but it was well worth it. There's something so fierce, unapologetic, feminist, and sexually liberating about this album.

I remember when self titled drop, radio stations were playing it non stop especially Drunk in Love,Partition,7/11,and Flawless. This solidified her as a living legend. The drop was definitely a culture reset to the point it changed the typically dropping date for albums. (Haunted,No Angel, and Jealous are underrated bops)

As a big Beyonce fan, I'll never forget that entire year before the album dropped. She dropped the "Grown Woman" song with the Pepsi commercial, "Standing On the Sun" with the H&M commercial , the GQ magazine cover and the Superbowl. I think initially the album was supposed to had came out around the time of those advertisements and there were rumors that she scrapped an entire album that she had recorded. Then she was on the Mrs Carter Tour that would have supported the record. So us fans had no idea when the album was coming after all the events and promo had passed. Then she did the surprise drop and shocked everybody. With the lukewarm reaction to 4, I was surprised and happy to see the new direction that she was going in. She made the right decision because self-titled was a success! 😁😁😁🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

The album that got scropped was in 2010 before 4. The Dream confirmed years ago that she had basically recorded an entire album with afrobeat sounds inspired by the worlk of Fela Kuti who pioneered the genre in the 70s End of Time was one of those songs that ended up on 4. That was the direction she was initially going for

This album cured my postpartum depression!!
Lol im being dramatic but backstory my son was just born and was often very sick and I was so tied up with being a new young single mom, with a sick baby I loved so much and postpartum issues- my friends invited me to a night out. I didn’t want to go but my brother said I can use his new studio beats. I listened to this album in commute on the Ferry to hang out. I remember looking out to the water listening to this masterpiece. I felt like a kid again just listening to some dope ass music with not a worry in the world. That moment of joy made me optimistic for the first time since my son’s birth and now My son is now a big handsome 10 year old and his dad and I got back together and stayed strong. I don’t attribute this to Beyoncé in the way that she fixed everything😂 I just remember life turning around for me after this album
Strange attribution I know but Thankyou Naomi for helping me relive that moment with this awesome vid 🤍

Self-titled came out at a time in my life when I felt "asleep". I grew up in the suburbs in a low income household, all at a time in my life I didn't really have any dreams or goals. When this album came out, it was so sudden and striking. It really woke me tf up. Everything about self-titled was so different to what I knew about my then boring life. This album changed my life. I felt liberated. I felt like I had a life I needed to live for. Also, this album also came out at a time I was settling in to my sexuality. There were countless "sexual" music, of course. But Self-titled felt natural, like it's innate in human beings. Self-titled was my awakening in so many ways.

I remember being awake watching videos that my sister sent me from Beyoncé’s Dec 2013 concert in Chicago when she dropped this album that same night. The surprise release alone revived the trend of those types of releases but having MVs for every track was pretty unprecedented. The performances, the energy, the fashions, you really just had to be there

This is my favorite B era. The drop by itself can never be repeated (I do remember where I was when it happened). I loved some songs on first listen and others grew on me by time, resulting in me loving almost every track (even the Platinum edition with Standing on the Sun remix). The production is SUPERB. She managed to express her sexuality raw and classy at the same time. The budget for all video's was big and HOW did she manage to keep filming and recording a secret. Plus The Mrs Carter tour 'part 2' with the addition of the new songs was my favorite concert ever (the run the world opening, the Blow and Yonce choreo). Plus her VMA performance was also my favorite (the pole dancing with the lighting, the girls with the golden legs on the stairs). This area was peak Beyoncé for me personally with her Virgo eye for detail, even the pink font. 'Yonce Yonce, are you happy to be in Paris?'

Oh that album is an experience is my favorite even if I am Sasha fierce made me her fan (listening her singing in spanish is a gift) but Beyoncé the album did truly mark me.

Man, I remember exactly where I was when I heard this album dropped, down to where I was standing in the room 😆 I had just gotten into school, as soon as I heard, my 18 year old fingers were clicking and clacking on my iPhone 5S searching for the album on Apple Music. Good memories 🤣🤣

I was just listening to this album the other day (after not doing so for a long time) and honestly it still sounds as fresh as it did the day it released.

This is the album that brought me back to Beyoncé and solidified me as a fan as I wasn’t too crazy about I Am Sasha Fierce and Four, though there were individual songs I liked. I didn’t play those albums forward to back like Dangerously and BDay.
When self-titled dropped my little sister called me screaming in the middle of the night and I got up, bought it and watched the whole thing at like 2am even though I had work in the morning. Good times. I was out of my parents house finally and in my first real true love adult relationship with the man I am now married to and am close to Beyonces age so really identified with the feeling of maturity and becoming grown having been listening to Destiny’s Child since I was also their same age.
I actually think Rocket and Blow were underrated and remain two of the best songs she’s ever made.

YESSSS this is the true Era for Beyoncé where she became a legend. The sound, the visuals, the vibe, the theme and messages behind all the song
*chef’s kiss. This is when I became a huge fan. In my opinion , Beyoncé could’ve retired after that album and that would of solidify her legacy.

A special time. I remember one of my friends posted about it on fb...yeah people still used that back then lol...and I thought he was playin. I immediately bought that shit and was in a group chat will all my gays that night. We were texting each other all night watching the videos together remotely. I remember at work all week, I would watch the videos in the car on my phone on my lunch break. hahah a time to be alive. AND I thought damn, this is incredible, she'll never be able to outdo this....then lemonade dropped...and then renaissance dropped. How she continues to outdo herself, I can't comprehend, but I am here for it and my standom just gets deeper and deeper each year.

This is why the world started calling it "Beyoncé's internet". ONLY Beyoncé could drop an album with NO 🙅🏾‍♀️ promo, NO 🙅🏾‍♀️ press runs, and do SOOO well.

This album is when she threw away commercial Beyoncé and went niche.
A lot of white america rejected this hip hop less pop ballad version of her
And she hasn’t has as wide appeal since
However lovers of music have loved her more and more since

  • @vanessajdiana

19:46 "Bow down bitches" was actually a mantra she came up with for herself after she gave birth and read a disrespectful article about her. A lot of people felt that her career was going to decline after 4's poor sales and because she was now a wife and a mother. She surprise-dropped the song on SoundCloud out of anger, and I think it translates so well into the rest of the era/album. Flawless in general perfectly encapsulates why she put out the album in such an unconventional way, she was sick of the expectations put on her as a female pop star who are often victims of ageism and sexism once they've settled down

When the album released I was barely getting into music and everyone screaming about (at the time) This Beyonce Girl I was very confused. So when I queued up the album I wasn’t expecting much but left absolutely in love.
Had a 10ish year old me shouting “DRUNK IN LOVEEEEE” and singing about being a mother.
Which followed the trend of me going back into her discography (including Destiny’s Child) and I was having a grand ol’ time.
Now Yonce remains one of my top artist EVER.
