John, my dear RUclipsr #1, you, as always, gave us a top top video, so clear, so straightforward in guiding people on how to manage better their photo gear.
If I may, John, I'd like to add a few comments on the usage of this legend to be Xpro1 camera. I am a photographer of the golden era of film photography. I learnt the roots of how to take pictures to last forever in one's memories with my dad, an internationally awarded filmmaker (Oscar nominee and Cannes's Golden Palm winner - Best Film). I remember well, that was in the mid-50's, when he taught me his own vision on what photography is all about. He did so with a Voigtlander Bessamatic camera, which bevame my 1st photography tool. He spent very little time explaining the operational mechanics for the camera.
He was more focused on how to make sure that I understood how to chose a given lens and how to make it work to accomplish the final result of my shots.
For him, every picture should tell a story. A good picture would be one that would tell my story, my personal view of an event, without further telling, without subtitles. In practical terms, it was all about composition, angle of view, creating the proper feeling of immersion, and so on. I was a lucky bastard, having a master genius as my 1st photography guru.
From those early days I went on in life experimenting all kinds of cameras and lenses, Hasselblads, Leicas, Zeiss, Angenieux and Cookes (cinema lenses). That was the film era. I stopped for some 20 years photographing until the new digital technology took over film. In the beginning, I was so impressed with the amazing leaps onto speed, processing, optical advances and portability. Cameras became computers taking pictures. Imagine, one could then take 100 photos in a ZAP without any additional cost. Before, every single shot had to be properly planned in advance since film was not a cheap commodity.
But, then, John, I started to realize that, no matter the incredible technological advances of the new digital era, something was missing. Something very, very important, was missing: the sense of real life. The sense of real life immersion. Something that I could only feel with the texture created by the silver particles on the emulsion of film strips. Besides, the new digital cameras needed to be handled as computers with their menus, sub-menus and sub-sub-menus of operational choices. Modernity had incorporated an ackward need for understanding subjects unrelated to photography. Before, when a moment for a photo arised I would just get my camera and take the pictures. Today, no way to do that unless you program your computer/camera beforehand for whatever different photo scenarios.
Okay, nevertheless, I decided to experiment the new digital era and bought my 1st digital camera, the Fujifilm XPRO1, together with the Fujinon 35mm 1.4.
That was almost 10 years ago. Thank God Fugifilm made the XPRO-1. A modern digital camera with the same mechanical buttons and dials that I had on my old Hsselblads, Nikons and Leicas. A perfect tool to make a time transition of photography eras.
I still use the XPRO-1 and, if you are interested, I will share with you and your followers what I learnt with it and how I fine-tune it, including how to mimic the looks of the classic chrome, only found in later Fujis.
By the way, your suggestion to use the AE-L/AF/L back button to focus in manual mode is really more precise and quicker than using any of the other focusing options. It's my standard procedure.
Also, John, please note that "R" (Red) filter for B&W or Monochrome film emulations yeld a similar result the same way real filters work in film photography. The Red Filter does create a more overall contrast and dramatic look to landscapes and street candids but will not create a pleasant look on people's faces in portrait shootings. Clouds in landscapes will look substantially more proeminent with the Red Filter, just like in film. For people's faces, the Yellow Filter, the "Y" option, will smooth up the porosity of the skin.
On my next posting, if you allow me, I would like to bring up some considerations about that magic film sense that cannot be measured by technical instruments and that are missing in 95% of all modern lenses engineered for digital photography. It is the "microcontrast" feeling. Nothing to do with resolution or sharpness.
Sigma (none) and Sony (except the "L" ) lenses don't yield that magic. A few Canons and most of the low Nikkor elements lenses do. All Fujis do!!! Most Zeiss (except the Milvus, Loxia and Otus) do too, particularly the low elements ones. My Fuji 35mm 1.4 is stellar in that respect and is a MUST lens in any AFC-S gear.
(These considerations are solely based upon observing their performance over multiples sites at the Web. I never owned them).
I am not a technical person. I am just a man with a camera in the pursuit of bringing people to immerse in the photos I take so that they feel like a genuine interactive actor in the scene. Such an immersion is impossible in flat pictures.
    Crisp pictures are just science.
Perception of life, from a human perspective, is never sharp.
We, humans, perceive life like dreams because the nature of man is romantic and vague. Every day we live we start it by imagining the multiple streams through which we will live it towrads a projected happy outcome. None of these projections is crisp. None can be measured by physical/scientific yardsticks.
    So microcontrast in photography.
I wish I could express better my thoughts in the English language since it is not my native tongue. I am an American from the South, Brazil. So, forgive me for any mispelling or bad use of your fantastic language, that I nurture as if it was welded in my DNA 70 years ago in Copacabana beach, my birthplace.

Very good, straightforward guiding to newbies on the XPRO-1. I've been using this camera since 2010 and would like to add just a point: I like to use some great vintage lenses on my XPRO-1 like the Yashinon F/2 (with an adapter). The camera won't recognize it so you must set *ON* the "Shoot without lens" at the #3 shooting menu. Also, be aware that, since old manual focus lenses don't have electronic connection to "talk" with the camera, some functions won't work, like manual focusing via pressing the AE-L/AFL button as you explain at 6:42 in this video.Using a Fuji lens, it will work flawless. A final comment: I only take B&W pictures and I use precisely all your tweaking suggestions except on 2 settings: "Highlight tone + 2" and "Shadow Tone +2". These settings add an extra dramatic punch to my B&W photos.

Straight forward and easy to understand not like some youtubers. They forget they need to appeal to real dead heads like me as it takes a while to settle into the brain. I must admit to being intimidated by this camera and I do not know why. Taking the camera on a cruise with the Fuji 18-55 lens fitted, its big step up from my point and shoot Fuji X20 which I love.and wonder wheter I should take that instead.
I found everything you said in this video relateable and simple thank you. God bless that man.

On the BBF using the AEL/AFL button, I'd suggest putting a dob of clear silicone sealant on the button to give it a better feel and grip. I did this on a Sony A6000 and it worked well. Ps. really enjoy your practical videos.

I realize this video is more than four years old, but I recently got a Fujifilm X-E1, which uses the same processor and X-Trans sensor as your X-Pro1 so I tried out your settings for B&W when my wife and I had a late lunch at a local pub today. I bumped the ISO up to 5000 and the photo came out fantastic. Thanks for the great recommendations.

Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it. Your video is refreshing. There are thousands of you tubers talking about gear but almost no one explains how to get the most out of there gear. I have an X-E1 so will try to incorporate your setting. The only camera I've ever used, prior to the E1, was an 40 year old film SLR. So I have a lot of catching up to do. Digital is very different from a fully manual Yashica from the 70's

Good video. I'd like to hear your thoughts on adapting older M42 or other mount lenses to the camera too though. I have some old legacy lenses I often adapt to the XT-1, but since getting the xpro1 as back up, I found it lacks a few MF features towards the T1. It has only peak or standard for focus assist where the XT-1 you can change peak coloring and strength. Though, tbh, I mostly just focus by eye. An odd thing I found though is that when zoomed to focus [by pressing in on the thumb dial] it's a lot more jittery than on the XT-1, especially with say, a 200mm prime. The XT-1 almost feels like it has stabilization towards it for close manual focusing. Love both cameras though, I came from a Nikon D800E and haven't regretted it once.

both of the x-pro1 reviews are excellent !, I purchased an x-e2s just this year (2018) after your recommendations, I am still wondering if I should have gone for the X-pro1 but the x-e2s has 77 hybrid focus point opposed to the x-pro 1's 46 points, also the x-ess offers the classic chrome simulation I love. it was released in 2016, and I got a smoking deal the camera dropped from 600 tp 400 after the release on the x-e3, I got mine with a kit lens and a 14mm 2.8 fuji lens set for $1200 total. also the x-e2s was but in Japan like its predecessor the x-pro1, whereas the x-e3 is made in chine, I owned the e-x3 briefly and returned it keeping the x-e2s. I think it hold much of the magic of the x-pro1 . Love your channel thanks!

Hello! This is s great video. Why? I'm waiting for my "NOS" (New Old Stock) Fuji X-E1 and will use these suggestions, because they will be a fast and good start, as I am not an experienced amateur. Meanwhile, I can easily study other settings without feeling lost and dumb. I will be able to enjoy from the first moment! This video desmystifies the ideas around expert cameras being for experts. Also, following these instructions I can easily shoot in manual mode, wich before was another mith for me. There are thousands of (good) videos explaining about cameras and models, but it is very rare to find one explaining and helping some of us about how to use it. It's not about the camera, it's about shooting well with simplicity. I saw dozens of videos and that's the first time I feel more confident to start with a real camera. For this reason, this is the first time I will subscribe in a RUclips channel. Really! Thanks John for that!

Yeah me too, mainly because you don't see dof and what is in focus on the OVF. I look through the window, and see where the focus ring is now, than I guess how much to turn it, and take the shot when I think it is right. OVF is nice, but hard to use with manual focus.

So it's Jan 2019. What are your thoughts on the images from this camera vs. Nikon's D750? I have a D750, but it's big. I like to take it everywhere and it's just so bulky that I get too much attention instead of being able to be discreet. Would the X-Pro1 allow me to do so in a better way? I typically walk around with Nikon 24-120mm f4 (large lens!) and would probably use a Fuji 18-135mm. I don't have a physical feel for the lens and camera in hand and we have no camera shops within a long distance to check it out in a store. RUclips is how I get my info before buying, along with written reviews. I know a FF to a crop sensor comes with a bit of sacrifice, but the D750 is not as jaw droppingly great as people think vs. crop sensor. Yes, high ISO is better, but my number of high ISO shots is low. Thoughts? X-T1 is cheap used now too. Which is preferable to you at this time? I subscribed and enjoyed the video.

Hi, I just received my XE1 and tryed these settings. It works very well. I only changed the colour to +2, because I like Fuji saturated images, specially for nature, but it's only a question of taste. I need a good grip to use the AE-L/AF-L fonctions to autofocus, if I want to hold the body with one hand. I would like to know if the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens works with this camera. Thanks!

Word ! Actually just bought the camera, used, since I last wrote to you. $240 from MPB . com /// I don't mind scuffs and scratches to the body, actually think it gives the camera some character but, that's why the price was so low.. Sensor and camera works perfectly fine, that's all I wanted lol. Think my brother already has the 35mm F2 so, gonna try that first. One thing that spiked my interest was that the X-Pro 1 doesn't have a diopter so...hopefully when I look inside my eye will be able to adjust lol. If not, gonna have to figure out a screw on diopter ? Have no idea, just happy to have another camera.

The Fuji and Portra film presets are wonderful and I actually feel they look better than the built-in Fuji film sims (Blasphemy, I know!) But take a look online at what you get, if you like the Fuji film sims built into the cameras, then you will probably like the Mastin stuff too. Especially if you like black and white, the B+W pack is beautiful too!

Aloha John! Much appreciate you posting this video, but I was hoping you delved into into why you prefer the X-Pro1 jpgs over the XT-1 (I believe that is the other Fuji camera you mentioned that you own?) I had a horrible experience with a X-E2 with the latest firmware, so it should of been comparable with the XT-1/XT-10 in terms of image quality, but everything was very muted. I tried a few different settings including ones that worked fine (well most of the time!) with a X-E1 and X100S. I really don't want to have to work with the raw files and was hoping for a Fuji camera that would produce a very good jpg file! Of course most of the reviews are full on raw shooters and thus very rarely comment on the jpg quality. In any case, great upload and keep them coming! Mahalo!

Okay. Sorry for jumping the gun there! I have read and heard others also say they like the original X-Trans over the newer models, but I don't think any of them really said why! Or showed any examples? I'd like to get the newish 23mm F/2 and a Fuji camera for it instead of a X100 series as it will be very close in price and I don't really care for the OVF of either the X100 or X100S (I am assuming that the X100F and X100T is basically the same in terms of field of view, clarity and such?) My apologies once again for asking the question ....

Juliano Maia Braga Thanks for the comment. Honestly, in my opinion, I love the X-Pro 1. It’s slower to focus, older and there are probably a million reasons why you should pick up the X-e2s, but there is something magical about the files. Hope this helps.

I just got an Xpro1 body this past Christmas. But I have no Fujifilm lens, yet. In the meantime time I'm using manual Nikon Ai film lens with an adapter to mount on x mount. Have you used manual lens or legacy lens as there called on your Fujifilm ? And if so, can you do a tutorial on how to get the best results when using non Fujifilm lens on the Xpro1. Thank you.

GenVirtu hi. Thanks for he comment. I actually have never used any legacy lenses but I have always wanted to. The results I hear are fabulous. I'll borrow a legacy lens and adapter and give it a try, and do a video on the experience. Maybe we can help each other with this topic.

John McTaggart The challenging part of shooting with the manual lenses is you can't use the OVF. With them. You can used the DVF to focus, but you only have a limited view to focus. To focus and meter in real time, you have to use the LCD screen on the back. For me, sort of defeats the purpose of have a camera like this since I will use it for street photography. My First day out, I had the 35mm lens set to infinity at f8. I found that the focus was off or soft on the subjects I was shooting with the DVF.
But I was very much impressed with the pictures that were right. This coming from shooting with Canon DSLR. Let me know if you have any questions.

John, i heard that this camera sensor is processing the best REAL black and white rather than Film Simulation B&W on the other fuji cameras even xt4! is that true? are your photos straight away jpg from the camera without manupulating in the post?

    • @JohnMcTaggartPhotographer
      @JohnMcTaggartPhotographer  3 года назад

Hi! Thank you for the comment. You know, I've heard the same thing as well and I think it's true. And for the most part, the photos I post/shoot are pretty much straight out of camera. I may do the occasional cropping or a few small adjustments, but never anything significant at all. As a photojournalist, getting it right in camera was always the best policy.

I had it for a while, great image quality, focus speed was usable, but in low light not really accurate.. :D I sold it in the end because 28mm eqv was not really my thing. Don't let the internet discourage you, it's a great lens. Saw a pretty sweet deal on amazon few days ago, if it's still on, grab one.. otherwise wait for the mk II

Järnmarks Produktion If you have money and want wide angle than 16 f1.4.If you don't want to spend that money and want to have versatel tool than 23mm f2.18mm f2 is not so good lens at least it is notbin same league as 23 and certainly get outperformed by 16mm f1.4 (think the 16 is the best current Fuji lens). I have 16 f1.4 , 23mm f2 and waiting to see 50mm f2...all Fujicrone lenses. Most used on my xpro-1 is 23mm. If you like some manual focus lenses take a look to old m42 glass there is a lot good lenses from Zeiss Jena , Meyer Optik, Takumars and Yashinon around.Found that old Zeiss Flektagon 35mm f2.4 give nice results on the Xpro-1 sensor (read as more vintage organic look).

Hmm.. I use almost the same setting. Regarding Noise reduction to -1, what does it actually do? I tried several identical shots with this and without and I didn't notice any changes in my JPEG at all. Do I miss something?

    • @JohnMcTaggartPhotographer
      @JohnMcTaggartPhotographer  7 лет назад

Hi Sergey. I was the same way when I first got my X-Pro 1. Then I had someone really show me what it could do and I actually notice it more when you shot at higher ISO settings (5000 and above) an in balck and white (which I shoot most of my stuff in). And actually the -1 setting adds a bit more noise overall . That said, when it's turned up you can lose sharpness and they just look a little weird. Of course, the fun and beauty of digital photography is it's all subjective. No opinion is really wrong - they're just suggestions based on experience mostly.
