I have to say that there is some kind of strange magic with the xpro1 and 35 1.4 combination. When I compare it to my full frame Nikons or my canon 5d 3 that I had, they all produce images that seem a bit sterile by comparison. I shot with it just the other day and for some subjects I’m still blown away by it’s character, I dropped the RAW files onto my 5k Mac and with no adjustments they are sublime.
Excellent summing up. I use two Xpro1’s and agree with all the points, love them both!👍😎🇦🇺
I have the xpro1 and 3. I absolutely agree that the shots out of the 1 are better to me than the 3. I’m actually thinking about selling the 3 and getting another 1 so I have two just in case.
I love these videos and your images are immaculate! So so good !
Thanks Scott! glad you like it.
Agreed! I love my xpro1.
Thanks Jeremy!
Found this very useful thanks. Been hankering after an XPRO1. Had one in 2014 but let it go, one of only two cameras i've missed once sold. Cheers.
The X Pro1 is brilliant, still have mine, had it from new (2012) along with the 18mm, 35mm and 60mm that were launched at the same time, we are told repeatedly that you need lots and lots of mega pixels to have good images, utter rubbish, I have prints up to A3+ from a shots using the XPro1 and one of the original lenses. Love mine and it is never being sold.
Yes I really rate the files from it never had any problems and think they are better than a lot of other cameras
Great photos tips and reflections again Martin. Thank You.
Thanks again Dezmond
@@MartinCastein We, all, I am sure, Get a lot put of your uploads.
This will be a good one, saving for later to watch with a beer!
Thanks Peter, probably not fun enough for beet! hahaa hope you are well.
Xpro one still a favourite of mine. Would like to try the 35mm f1.4 😍
Dear Martin, thank you for some exceptional shots at the beginning of your video - fantastic. Years ago I sold my Olympus OM-1 which bitterly regret. I still have my Fuji X-Pro 1, it is a frustrating camera with its contrast focus method etc. BUT the files that it produces are fantastic.
Thanks David I agree frustrating camera but fun to use and great files
When the X-Pro2 was later arriving than people hoped, Fuji UK were selling refurbished X-Pro 1 cameras for £250. These were purported to be customer returns, and I have to say mine was unmarked, though less so now. Firmware made focusing much better, though nothing like the latest models, and the EVF was lo-res as was focus peaking. Those apart the X-Pro1 produces remarkable files, especially with uncoated lenses. I also have an X-M1 which has a similar output, and is available for a lot less than the XP1 if you can find one.
Fantastic video mate. Good to hear and see the aspects of a particular piece of kit in the real world, and the results you get from it:)
I know what you mean about regrets. I really miss the black X100s that I owned. It had many foibles compared to my dSLR's , but I loved the look, feel and results from the little devil, and now miss it. Also I vouch for your comments about that camera size doesn't matter at a wedding for example, and that it's the skill and anticipation that get you through. My main everyday camera is a D3, and I love street shooting with it, and I've never had any issues regarding it's size or anything else when I'm out in the public domain. Like you said, it's down to confidence, and the way you present yourself really.
Keep up these fab vids pal, and I'll be looking forward to the vid you post, where you say, "Look, I've bought an X pro 1...again"
All the best
Gav.J
Hahahaha yes it could well happen that I end up with an x pro 1 again, i nearlly bought one a few weeks ago. Going to have some nikon videos coming out soon as well. Glad you are using your D3, i had the D3s and miss it so much, ahhh i dont even want to think about the fact i sold it.......
I really liked your thoughts about getting paranoid about being unobtrusive when taking pictures at events. I struggle with that. Well for me it is comes down to mainly how silent I can get with my gear and how far away I can get from my subjects. I usually shoot with 70mm+ focal length for this reason, also with a tilt screen (if available) from chest level or waist level if possible with silent shutter. Now this really helps me. I mainly shoot at casual events: conferences and alike, when people are interacting, a speaker is upfront etc. For this reason when there is very little ambient noise and I want to take candid pictures of people paying attention, interacting I found very helpful to use the silent shutter. I just dread the loud shutter noise and people by reflex looking at me immediately after I take a picture of them.
Problem is I really want a 6d mk1 now. :). I found a good deal with a 70-210 usm lens, flash and grip for 350 pounds. (I am just not willing to pay triple the price for an EOS R only for the silent shutter and possibly worse colors). What is your experience with it's silent shutter mode on the 6d? It is okay to use it at the more silent part of events, when you want to remain as unobtrusive as possible? Considering you are 10+ meters from your subjects can you get away with it without them looking directly into the camera?
When i used to use my D700 at weddings i was so paranoid about the sound of it, i think its the loudest camera ever made. I used to ask the bride after ceremonies if they could hear the camera sometimes but they always said no. The thing is we notice but everyone elses attention is elsewhere so it really doesnt matter that much. Having said that, not feeling like you are standing out is a big thing. If you want a quiet shutter at a reasonable price the quiet mode on the 5diii is excellent, its super quiet, but the 6d is quiet too. So id go for either. 5d iii has dual card slots too though.
What an amazing video. So so interesting. I want this camera
Thank you!
I have the X-Pro3 and it’s great! I would love to experience shooting on the original.
i need to get one again, its a terrible camera in many ways technically, very slow, clunky and i love it , one of my favourite of all time.
Try DXO PhotoLab or DXO PureRaw best noise reduction there is it even restores loss color due to high ISO. I shoot M43 and its like shooting full frame now when it comes to high ISO. I export to DNG raw so I can edit in another editor if I want.
I have concentrated on three cameras, Nikon D610, Canon 5D Mk1, and X-Pro1. Each have their place, are old and especially the last 2 come from a time when they measured success based upon how close they were to film results rather than digital measured perfection (which most people then remove with editing!).
I come from a time when manual focus was all I had and I bought into the Nikon to use the manual AIS lenses because unlike Canons old manual they work on body without adapter. I bought my X-Pro1 second hand and near mint condition for 250UKP about 3 years ago. Now with a NIKON-FujiX adapter I can use all the manual lenses I love. (AIS: 50mm f1.8, 28mm f3.4, and an old NikkorQ 135mm f3.5). I still use the Fuji 14mm 2.8 and the 18-55mm for street, but the best results come from manual focus with the Nikkor lenses. For street the Canon 5D mk1, battery pack & 40mm f2.8 is also magic mostly because it is very heavy and easier to hold stable.
I think too many people keep changing and never allow the time for a camera to be so automatic that it becomes a part of you rather than something that stands between you and the moment you wish to capture.
A.,
Your camera line up is my favourite camera list exactly! haha the 40mm is an excellent lens its amazing its so good when its so small too. I agree too much camera changing going on not enough photograph. Thakns for the comment Alex. :)
@@MartinCastein , thanks for the great video! Between the X-Pro1 and the Canon 5D, which one would you say produces more "film-like" images?
Great video.
I've shot several weddings on my Xpro1 and the camera performed well and I didn't have shoulder pain at the end of the day. I do agree on battery life... rubbish.
Seller's remorse, I know that feeling. Sold my Hasselblads, regretted it. Sold my Canon A1 regretted that too for sentimental reasons. I won't do that again. As you say, far from a perfect camera... but neither are my X100, X100s and X10. I won't part with them either.
I love the XF 35 1.4, rendering is just wow! Took a portrait of a Wallabee at a beach south of Sydney right before sunset, I will always remember that shot. Shot it with a XT2 though! Your channel is really really refreshing! Thank you!
You can get a mini xpro1 (xe1) for around $250 u.s. right now. If you dont need the ovf. 6months newer and smaller with buit in flash
For sure, prefer the x pro1 ergonomics personally
Yeah. This proves that it is skill with the equipment… and not how new the gear is… that matters. Well done. 👍📸
Thanks David! Hope you are doing well buddy
@@MartinCastein I am good. How are you?
all good David took a break from youtube for a bit but back at it now, will check out your videos shortly mate.
Martin thanks for awesome insight to Fujifilm xpro1, I love it too! What is your strobe setup with xpro1 I struggle with finding and shooting flash photography with the xpro1. Would love to see a video and or a recommendation. Currently shooting with available light or continuous. Thanks again
Hi sorry late reply’s what’s your main struggle with flash?
@@MartinCastein when shooting flash photography, what is your set up( trigger and strobe) and setting( in camera). I shot with manual lenses ( non- Fujifilm lenses)
i use pocket wizard plus 2 which are probably a bit old now and for strobe i use bowens 500 i dont think they exist any more or speedlights which can be a mix of anything really. flash is really all the same though, a flash and a trigger, its important to get a reliable trigger, sometimes fuji has problems with some triggers, i always found the PW plus 2 very reliable.
@@MartinCastein thanks, are your lenses native or non- Fujifilm? I would love and appreciate if you can do a video on your flash photography setup and process. Again thank you for replying.
Did you use the 35mm 1.4 for these photos? Or the 23mm 1.4? Looking for lens for my Fuji xpro1. Currently using vintage lenses….
35mm I’d get whichever focal length suits you best of the two
I was frustrated with mine and picked up my Nikon again, with great relief: a big, clear viewfinder, no parallax error, instant shutter release.
I ended up using the electronic viewfinder as the frame lines were not accurate enough. And the laggy shutter release made it frustrating for street. I’ve not yet sold it, keeping it to experiment with - but the Nikons just work, efficiently and reliably.
I think with the x pro 1 you either like it or you don’t, it’s not very good functionally, probably the worst camera I’ve ever used but enjoy it a lot.
Using back button focus increases functionality of the X-Pro1. It separates the shutter from the focus system and speeds operation up massively.
Martin. I have money burning hole in my pocket again. I love my 5D to death. Is there any reason why in need to get this XPro1 based on image quality alone? Which camera’s quality do you prefer? Thanks Martin
No the 5d is better haha really it the 5d is better I’m afraid
@@MartinCastein Perfect, You just saved me $650 for a camera and a lens. 5D for life!
@@MartinCastein Perfect, You just saved me $650 for a camera and a lens. 5D for life!
Xpro 1 or nikon d3400 or a6000 photography
X pro 1
@@MartinCastein thank you ❤🙏
but it depends what you are using it for the x pro 1 focus speed is VERY slow. I like its pictures the most but for anything moving much the a6000. but for me its the x pro 1 for what i shoot.
Thanks, Martin. One can tell great advice on photography from a wanna be photographer. Your points and work are very good. Btw, X-T1 shooter here. I'd just rather buy the right glass over changing technologies. Though I may step up to an X--T3 soon. Thank you for the great insight. I saw your X-T1 video. Excellent.
