  • In June & July 1990, we took a family vacation to Eastern Canada & New England. Along the way, I had a few chances to film some trains.
    1. A quick look at some MBTA trains sitting at Boston's North Station - July 7 1990
An Afternoon & Evening at the Albany - Rensselaer Amtrak station - July 8 1990
    2. Train 283, the Niagra Rainbow arrives from NYC with FL-9 #489 which is switched out for F40 #409
    3. A Rohr Turboliner arrives & departs with train 68, The Adirondack.
    4. #283 Departs
    5. FL9 489 picks up a private car dropped off by train #283
    6. FL9 489 backs onto train #64, The Maple Leaf
    7. A turbo pulls into the station to begin its run to New York as train 270, The Hudson Highlander.
    8. The Maple Leaf departs, followed by the Turboliner.
    9. Train 288, The Water Level Express arrives with F40 #257
    10. Train 265, The Hudson Highlander arrives from New York with FL9 #487
    11. The engines are swapped between trains 288 & 265. The F40 backs 265s trainset to the yard, & the FL9 waits to take 288 on to New York.
    12. FL9 #485 arrives with train 49, the New York section of the Lake Shore Limited.
    13. South & Northbound Light Rail trains on Main st in downtown Buffalo NY.
    14. Amtrak train at Buffalo's Exchange St Station. I believe this was 63, the Maple Leaf bound for Toronto.

Love this. I grew up in Buffalo and rode the Empire Corridor most summers to go see my father out in the Albany area and then sometimes to see my Grandmother in New York City. Then the trains would terminate at Grand Central Station. I was born in the 1970s so at an early age I recognized the differences in the models: the F units, the F40PH units, the turboliners and then the Genesis units. I always thought it was cool how they had to switch between the F units and the F40PHs at Albany-Rennselear. It was further amazing how the engines had distinct sounds. Great stuff, the different generation of engines, the older rolling stock, the traditional colors, all of it. Great video.

I know it's a crazy thing to think, but imagine if you actually caught MBTA 1073 in that opening clip...

I still can't believe Amtrak once used F10 locomotives.

yeah I can't believe that either, seeing an f10 Amtrak locomotive is like seeing a stegosaurus riding a rocket, the other diesel loco as rare as this one would be the EMD Burlington northern locos pulling the Metra trains in the early 90's

The 489 and 487 were actually former New Haven FL9's, dual mode locomotives that were capable of running as straight electrics into Grand Central Terminal. They picked up current from the 3rd rail. Notice that they have 5 axles. F10s were 4 axle locos and were straight diesels.
