Here's what Toby said on the matter. "Before the song “UNDERTALE” was completed, it went through a completely different iteration. This version sounds a bit more sad, which I think would have been less effective. It wasn’t until I heard a certain song that I was inspired to completely change the chords and guitar accompaniment. This new guitar accompaniment then served as the basis for “Memory,” so we have a lot to thank that inspiring song for."
The old version feels like how asgore feels, guilt-ridden and depressed, but continuing for the sake of monsters. The new version feels like the monster's hope. Hope for a brighter future.
If you listen carefully, the strumming guitar in the beginning can also be heard in the final version of the soundtrack - it's just, well, not as obvious.
I personally prefer this song over the more upbeat and inspiring versions This is much more emotional and impactful, it’s dark, scary, sombre and upbeat all in one It’s a shame it went unused because it’s genuinely one of the best renditions of the undertale theme
This theme basically conveys that you're walking on a death march. Where your death seems to be the only way to free the monsters. But it doesn't fit properly because in this part you are determined. Since what you've gone through
I also really love this version. I don't think it'd fit as well in the New Home Asriel story scene, but I wish there was a place for it in the game, it's so good 🥺 I saw another comment say that Toby could use it for a scene in Deltarune, like a scene describing Deltarune's connection to Undertale, and I think that'd be so cool 😄
Nah way i was just looking for unused songs in Undertale and find the stars above fella! Keep up the great work, your mod is deserving if all the love it got and far more.
This is one of the songs I associate with Chara, along with MEGALOVANIA and Once Upon a Time. Actually, it isn't completely unused, since you can hear it in the background of the final version
I really preffer this over the final version. ESPECIALLY IF WE'RE TALKING GENOCIDE. The final version seems more happy, which for the story that the monsters tell you, doesn't really fit for the most part, besides the emotional bit at the end, but after that it seems happy again, and that happiness I can only see from their eyes. Not Undyne, Alphys, Toriel, Sans, heck not even Papyrus who was fully convinced that Asgore would let you go to the barrier if you just asked nicely seeming as he beleived Flowey's words of needing to go interveene you and Asgore's fight. But this? This feels right. This sets the mood. It tells you that you better choose what happens wisely otherwise they will not come out unscathed in this mess.
That’s a great version that goes against game’s message. Undertale is a story of empathy. Therefore a theme that focuses on player’s and protagonist’s feelings is not that good of a choice. Instead an upbeat version we hear in the game represent monster’s feelings. And therefore lets us understand their wills and motives. It is about their happiness. Their hope to finally be free. That’s why release version suits the game better
I don't know if I'm the only one, but I have my headcanon that if Clover were to reach the original part of New Home and have the opportunity to hear Chara and Asriel's story, she would listen to this soundtrack, Taking the context that there was desperation for when he would obtain the sixth soul and by Asgore himself who is more determined and not having overthought everything
@@orangejuice8279 deltarune isnt undertale. not a sequel or a prewuel. toby stated that deltarune takes place in an another universe completely separate to undertale. but they are obviousl related, somehow, but definately not directly connected.
Undertale itself was quite complete and excellent in all aspects, so i can't really imagine a sequel being better than that that's why i think it was wise of toby to make deltarune instead of a sequel
Imagine Toby uses this track in Deltarune during the scene where the connection between that game and Undertale’s plots is shown.
That would be PERFECT
Everything about this song screams:
Let me tell you what happened to [insert thing here] many years ago
I think we can hear the motives in "field of hopes and dreams"

That would of been cool, or make it a new darkworld song

Someone should try creating an alternate version of Memory where THIS song was the basis for it.

To me this is like a sort of death march where the hopes of all of the monsters depend on your death. Or something like that
