- in this video i review the newest version latvian ration , it seems they have shifted to a US based main which is a shame because they have ruined the ration completely , saving a few pennies is not always best for troops !!!

The wodden spoon: from (I think it was) january 2021, plastic utensils, cups, plates etcetera is banned within the European Union. It's an ongoing effort to cut down platic waste that ends up as micro plastics in nature.
Good decision. China has polluted whole oceans with their plastic crap, and small Europe has to 'save the World' by going max green wherever possible. Not a bad thing, but only if we all do it together.
From other guys that have already received these rations, they say the other menu main courses are multiple times better than the old ones, we hated the canned shit because you usually got a ton of fat and barely any meat, maybe some meat chunks that were unedible, if you were really unlucky you got some guts in it, and after that didn't want to open another can for a few days...
I think you just got unlucky, never got cans with a ton of fat in them. But got to admit that the spoons are way better than those flimsy thin plastic spoons
There is a reason why you have a flameless heater in your pack . There are no kettles in the battle field . So use it and test it!
I think you have to take into consideration national traditions. Dark rye bread is the thing in Northern Europe and in the Baltic states, especially in Latvia and Estonia, black rye bread is just a "cult", it is eaten since our childhood and can be sweeter can be really mature and bitter etc. In Latvia, there is even a traditional dessert made of black rye bread. On the contrary, jam is not much used in this way in the country. Anyway, I believe, Latvian soldiers like these new MREs better than the old ones, that is the most important :)

Hate when MRE guys have heating bags provided in ration, but they're luke "I'll use a kettle it's better lol"

I'm also interested in how well the ration heater works. Its part of the experience aswell.
wooden spoon is due to EU regulations on cutting plastic waste so no single use plastic utensils. For the oats - you have to actually boil it for few minutes.
The dried beans as a snack would be like either Pepitas or like Corn nuts you may have seen in some rations.👍

It's no wonder a lot of military bods end up trading their rations for money or off-the-shelf food if things are getting lazy like that, even British rations are basically just US MREs in a different bag now... :\

A dirty little trick with instant coffee is to soak the crystal in a tiny amount of cold water first then add hot water. Ta da! The instant coffee terrible taste is gone.

Hello. It is prety interesting but today I tried the latvian MRE for the first time and I got the same set. And it is not so bad. At least the main dish. I put the soy souce in it and it was prety edible. The real bread is much better then the one at MRE. Beens are tasteless but I got the people in my family that like them. I got some other sets as well but not tested them yet because I love caned pork and bread that I can by in shop.
Does this ration have the Kavorka?

Why due you always leave a flap of every package hanging in your way. Keep it easy and neat, take the entire top off.

Maybe the whole idea for those wooden spoons is in the recyclability of not having that plastic garbage everywhere.
Your taste buds are not sophisticated enuogh to enjoy soya sauce . That packet of soya sauce should be mixed thru that whole main meal thoroughly to get the right effect . You dont use soya sauce straight up like that.
Dump the raisins into the muesli to balance the need for sweetness maybe?

from all Latvian MRE this is only one who has failed. Chicken with vegetables is just disgusting. I am Latvian and I have to admit that this main course isn't from Latvian cuisine. Someone has tried to be "very original" creating this food mix and he has failed. Nathan - try other Latvian MRE.

This may seem sparse to many, but you must remember that the Latvians were ground under the Russian heel for decades. So, being starved by the Russkies has carried over into their idea of field rations. Besides, ALL European food is quite distasteful. Anyway, as for the muesli or oatmeal as I see it, that crap is not fit for human consumption in any culture! I rank oatmeal with pancakes as some of the crappiest food of all time.

@@drerri Sometimes, grass maybe. Certainly not oatmeal, or "porridge" or "muesli" as its called everywhere else. To feed that to anyone is abuse!
