This was the first MRE I ever had. I was in high school ROTC maybe a year or 2 before I shipped out. I thought man, what have I gotten myself into? But I actually learned to like it. Especially for breakfast. You had to be able to heat it up though. We started getting heaters separate from the meals before we started getting MREs that included them in the pouch. You also have to break it up as much as you can before you heat it up. Then all the Tabasco goes in. Along with the crumbled up crackers and the cheese spread. And the salt and pepper. Then it was…….edible. And man I loved the oatmeal cookie bars. I tried a few years ago to see if there was anywhere I could order them by themselves. Nope. So I looked for a copycat recipe. Nothing…..
😃👍 LOL, I thought I was the only one military or civilian that liked the Omelet with ham!? 22 years Army & my favorite C-rat AND MRE were Egg Omelet with Ham & Spaghetti with Meat sauce. The Oatmeal Cookie Bar was the bomb! (I even liked the sandy texture.🤣) I would make Ranger pudding with the cocoa powder to frost the oatmeal bar sometimes. MY Platoon Sergeant said I wasn't human when he heard me trading FOR omelet with ham!
Man I looked for the oatmeal cookie bar recipe as well with no luck. This was my favorite mre ever I liked the omelette hot and mix in the cheese. The worst for me was the tuna one gawd I had to just swallow each bite without chewing with water to wash it down.
I remember those brown bag mre's back in the mid 80's during boot camp . Nasty things . Miss seeing your sister ( Ms Amanda ) and Phil in your videos , hope all is well with them .
@@shimonsieskel8487 yeah lol, hell he even ate hard tack from the civil war. My question is where does he get the money to spend on these? I know for some of the WWII rations, he said he spent $6000-$7000
Chicken A la King was the bane of my existence! 5 of them, face down in the box, first one flipped, CAK, second flipped CAK, third flipped, CAK!! (See a trend?) I threw the box on the ground and started opening a new box. Guy behind me was a bird colonel, “I’m with you Sgt, open that next box!”
I still have a few of these in AK. Last I ate one they were still good.... it's cold up here. CAP was getting rid of them and I took a couple of boxes.
In the 80s and 90s I would trade everything for the peanut butter and the crackers. The dehydrated sausage patties were like tasty crackers, so I kept/traded for them, too (learned VERY quickly they were better as tasty crunchies than as the mess they swelled up to in water LOL). The ham steak was the first time I ever had ham. I sincerely believe it's one of the reasons I went back to keeping Kosher.
OMG, this takes me back, loved the oatmeal cookie bar. true classic pre-flameless heaters. Luckily I was a Tanker so we had a 6 million dollar mre stove they were all better warm.
I actually didn't mind the omelet part, the potatoes were awful though. It was always available being as almost everyone hated it. I still hold that the #11 Chicken with rice was the best of the 90s MREs. Being as the Chicken and Rice entree was pretty low calorie it came with a chocolate covered cookie bar and a bag of M&Ms.
That meal was made just before I went to Desert shield/storm in the United States Marine Corps and nobody wanted to get that meal lol as a matter of fact, anybody that got stuck with it would trade the components for something that they liked if they could
I had a freeze dried Ham and Egg Omelet MRE entree dating back to GKW. It kicked around in my camping gear stuff for about 15 years and I never experienced sufficient desperation to give it a go. It is now, quite literally, part of a museum exhibit.
I liked that one. Heat the eggs and cheese on the engine block or track heater, stir up the eggs and add cheese to it. I don't remember the tobasco back then..
I remember being out in the field and when chow time came, the senior guys would always get the good stuff first and i always got stuck with this one or corned beef and ass. I refused to eat either one and would rather just go hungry. Nasty nasty nasty!
Back in ‘88-‘90, the chicken a la king was the worst MRE to get. I knew a guy who got food poisoning from the chicken a la king. We avoided that one like the plague. I preferred the beef slice in barbecue sauce.
I couldn't stand the Chicken Ala king MRE myself. I remembered eating them at 29 Palms, CA. Used to make a casserole out of it with the crackers, put everything in the main pouch and let it sit out in the Desert Sun for a while 😢
Not going to lie, I loved the omelette with ham MRE back in the 90’s. You could eat it cold or warmed up and it was good either way the oatmeal cookie was always good also……hated the potatoes au gratin though.
I still remember the C rations. 3 or 4 green cans with assorted culinary disasters. The most famous was the eggs and ham, when you opened the can you had to pay attention or you would try to open it twice because the eggs and ham were very green. I always believed Dr Suess was in the army when he wrote green eggs and ham. By the way it tasted just how it looked.
I got eggs and ham one cold morning at Camp Attaboy (Atterbury) in Indiana. We had to do our morning hygiene of course. I shaved with a single blade razor and cut myself straight down my chin. In the cold I didn't feel it. I sat down and opened the main can and started eating. It was beyond terrible. The Sergeant Major walked by. He always made as if he didn't like me much. He looked at me funny-- it was just getting light. He got a big smile on his face, walked over and shouted "I like that! That looks mean!" He pounded me on the shoulder and walked away smiling. The guy across from me just looked at me and shook his head. I asked what was up. He pulled out his steel mirror and held it up. I saw the huge slice down my chin and the blood running down in a shape like a goatee. I then saw that I was dripping blood into the ham and eggs. That's why they were even worse than usual.
My best friend in High School joined ROTC in 1986. He was sent to basic for the summer before his senior year. He brought me back MRE's from his weekends and his 2 weeks of AIT the following summer. I loved them--yes, even the one he just ate. I didn't mind any of them at all. The 5 fingers of death were interesting, but not off-putting to me. And I loved the cheese spread. I've never tasted anything quite like it since. The newer MRE's have a good cheese spread, but the 80's-90's cheese had the look and texture of peanut butter but a very wonderful flavor of cheese that I've been unable to find since.
When I was in the Air Force in 1990 and 91 when we depolyed to Desert Shield/Storm this was one I avoided. Beef Stew, Chicken stew, Chicken and rice, BBQ pork and Corned Beef Hash wer all decent.
Chicken ala king was the worst back then, IMHO. #'s 5 (spaghetti) and 11 (chicken and rice) were my go-to's, if I recall. To date...I burned out on Tabasco and won't touch it since my 5 years in 90-95.
They did not look too much different back in the day when they were fresh. The only MRE that really made me want to wretch was the Ham and Chicken loaf.
Whenever I was unable to make a choice and got this handed to me I used to give the omelet and potatoes to my friends if I couldn't trade it and keep the other stuff to add to my next MRE.
I grew up on mres as my dad was heavily involved with the vfw and a lot of my friends were in our hometown national Guard unit and personally I Prefer mess to food in the stores
Those are the best MREs for longevity. They will last 20 years or more. I think that's a 1980 MRE though, which makes it > 40 years old. They were heavily dehydrated and require a bit of rehydration to be edible in a traditional sense.
The things this Man does for Science. We salute you
This one was not good in 1990 had to eat it a few time during Desert Storm. I hated it
Thank you for your service sir.
I suppose when something is this old you are looking more at “how well has it dsurvived”/“is is still edible” rather than “is it good”/“do I like it”.
Same here brother in arms.

Probably because it was stored right.

I love the omletes even the vomlet. But I come up eating alot of powdered eggs.
I liked the Omlette with Ham too... and the potatoes au graten.
I still eat powdered eggs at times ( have a couple of pouches stashed away ) , great for emergencies
@@thomasfletcher760 my point was the guys that ate powdered eggs liked the omelet mre's than the guys who were only use to fresh eggs.

Nathan, the worse MRE when I was in the Marines from 1986 to 1992, was the Chicken Ala King. Maybe you can do a review on that original old nasty😂
I remember getting that MRE. I never was able to eat the oatmeal cookie bar. It was to hard
GOD Bless you and your families
Makes a passable knife sharpener
That one was in my opnion, better than what we called " The Five FINgers of Death" which was 5 hotdogs in BBQ sauce
Would not have been my first choice. Thanks for sharing
Welcome back. I hope y'all are doing well
Glad you decided to make a few more MRE vids
I loved the oatmeal cookie bar in those. Searched high and low to find new production, but there aren't any out there.
OH THE MEMORIES! Yakima Training Area 1990....MRE Heaven!!
That's not a knive... that's a mini axe haha ;-)

This MRE was the 2nd generation. I served in the USAF from 84-90. We had pork patty, beef patty, meatballs in BBQ sauce and a few others.
Thanks for the content Nathan!!!!!!

You got that right brother. Sure beat the 4 fingers of death.
I liked the omelet with ham MRE. Used to put the coffee in a water bottle and throw it on the dash of my truck to heat up.
Good to see you back how’s Amanda
Thanks for the reminder of that nightmare.
anything was better then the "Chicken a la King", and why they didnt come out with the friggen heaters sooner, is beyond me
I used to have 2 cases of the 90s ones but I used them while I would go hunting. Most of them were fairly good

warmed up and with tobasco, it actually wasn't that bad.
