Great review Olly! I think you're right - the ending was too sudden and odd. I also felt that the bleakness was a little overdone. Saying that, it has actually stuck in my brain and I've loved so of Nash's other books. Siân

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I wasn't a fan and the ending was kind of "okay?" My issue with the book had everything to do with the Southern Gothic aspect. It didn't feel authentic in terms of the setting, the people, or the Pentecostal stuff. Someone with a web browser wrote this versus boots on the ground.

I flew through this book, too. It is gritty and disturbing and generally made me feel like crap when I was reading it, but I loved it😆 It was a five-star read for me.

it sounds like something we've all seen and heard before, don't you think? Apart from the chickens it doesn't sound that original. 🤭

You're a braver person than I. I can't really do these "disturbing" type of books anymore, because I just never think using stuff like horrific abuse in a book for entertainment sits very well with me. Especially as someone who experienced abuse at multiple points thriughout my life. It's a subject that needs careful handling.
