Both Booktok and Booker are always mixed up in one scandal or another. They have that in common. It drives me crazy when at least three books on the Booker longlist haven't even been released yet. There is something payola-like about all of it.

Yeah I think the Booker is so entwined with the publishing biz that there is bound to be some funny goings on

Fantastic video. The best thing about your channel is your constant attack on prejudice and snobbery. I love it. It’s why I will always try to make an effort with Garbaugust and why you’re so good at this.

This hate on anything that is liked or loved by, as you said, young women, and specifically teenage girls, has been such a prominent feature in our patriarchal society. We (as a society) laugh at everything that´s associated with them, the books, movies and music they like, how they act, we see them as children while sexualising them. Which, of course, leads then to a lot of internalized misogynie by teenage girls themselves towards each other. That´s why I talk, as an adult, now about my love for ´trashy´ stuff like Twilight. There´s a lot to it, I´m sure smarter people have written books and thesis after thesis on this, but it´s something to always keep in mind when going on and on about something specifically adored by young women. :)

Completely agree - and at the same time trashy stuff for male audiences (westerns for example) is often (in some cases at least) revered

@@CriminOllyBlog Yes!! And only on the grounds of its target audience. You´re absolutely correct. (Cough McCarthy, but that's also my taste lol)

You make a great point here worth amplifying: Enthusiasm isn't inherently anti-intellectual. Nobody squeeing over things is making a case that a more intellectual analysis of something is a bad idea or not worth it. I _have_ seen one argument to the effect that squee-type discussion crowds out more intellectual discussion, but I don't think that really holds up either: people who want brainy analysis of things will be motivated to search for them, and there's no end of that kind of stuff right here on this platform. It's being made, and it exists very much in its own space with its own fanbase.

Exactly. There’s room for all kinds of different videos about books. One type doesn’t harm any other.

Great point about The Booker Prize echo chamber. The only difference is what kind of books that are discovered via the Booker or BookTok

Love this discussion. Diversity in judges and presenters creates a diversity of books represented. The same panel for the prestigious prizes makes things look very similar.

During my M.A. there was this one professor at my university who literally *only* taught Booker Prize nominated books. Like, she did not say that out loud or anything, but when you read her syllaby for the different seminars she offered, it was very noticeable. I was quite sceptical towards this selection process - to me, it meant that instead of putting original thought in her syllabus creation she just deferred that thought process to a "higher authority," while other lecturers made an effort to include under-discussed books and popular fiction.
I was not surprised when I later learned that she was known for taking ideas and analyses from student papers and presentations and using them for her own publications; without credit, of course.

She definitely sound like a lecturer to avoid!

enjoyed the video. thoughtful commentary about the way we are influenced on what to read. I think there is the tendency to dismiss the benefits of reading what some view as without literary value but who cares what others read if they enjoy it.

I I love how you called the Booker Prize an "Echo Chamber". I think in both cases, they are legitimate ways of finding books one might be interested in - as a discovery method.

Really interesting insight into the Booker Prize process of selecting 'worthy' books. I had no idea how it was done. I must admit, quite a few of this year's Booker shortlist sound really interesting -- which is certainly not always the case!

After watching Booktube since 2020, I have noticed how homogeneous it is. This is because I prefer certain genres of books, so I tend to be interested in male dominated content.
My quest is to broaden my horizons by watching Booktubers from other countries and cultures, to see what they’re reading and enjoying.
It has been an exciting journey.
Thank you for contributing to my reading diversity.

Re: The Booker Prize, previous winners also get a free nomination thus creating a feedback loop to go along with the echo chamber.

I didn't know that either about the booker prize. That really lessens it in my view. But it does explain why Kingsolver is nominated so often. 🙄 Oh boy, there's a can of worms. 🪱
