Olly, this video couldn’t have been more timely! I've been searching for a better workflow strategy, and your insights are exactly what I needed. As always, your channel remains an invaluable resource. Thank you!
Great vid, Olly! I might try that Trello… I could certainly use some help on the organization front. I sprung for Final Cut Pro a while back and it was worth every penny for me.
Thanks for sharing, Olly! 😊 I love hearing how others organize their channel content and the equipment being used for filming and editing. Good to know you use your phone to film. I do, too.
Gosh I'd forgotten about trello! That may well be useful for me, good tip! I find I'm always working on the next video, which is a bit of a hand to mouth existence, I'd like to get a couple weeks ahead. I use a Google spreadsheet to keep track of everything. Books, tbr, reading record, ideas, content schedule etc, and Google docs for scripts. I use Nano Teleprompter to help with sticking to script when filming. I just use my phone for filming, a good mic is a worthwhile investment, I use a Shure MV7. Interesting to get some insight into your process! 👍
Hi Olly! Followed your recommendation and purchased a Serious Readers floor light. When I was reading in the past I would get a headache and eyestrain after about 30 minutes. Now I can read comfortably for three to four times that. I live across the pond in the colonies and shipping was expensive, but worth every pound and pence.
I feel like what I think I can do and what I can actually do are so far apart most of the time lol this is a great look behind the scenes though! I had to take a break from even watching youtube, but now that I am watching more, maybe I'll get back to making videos again too? Who knows
Glad it was useful! I do think it's really important that people are realistic about how much time they can give up to their channel and shape it accordingly
I encourage you to upgrade to MacBook Pro. That’s what I have and use/used Final Cut Pro when I was doing Booktube videos. Final Cut Pro is a learning curve but worth it. This is a level of organization I strive to have.
Thanks a bunch for this Olly, super helpful to see how one of the greats does things. As a fairly new booktuber I've got to the point where I am scripting, recording and editing videos on the day I want them to come out, so I think I need to step back and plan it out and get a bit ahead again. I do have two questions 1 - Your Blue Yeti Mic, does it hook into your phone? Or do you record the audio as a seperate track and marry them together in the editing? Looking to upgrade my sound quality. 2 - How long after you've finished a book would you still consider recording a review video? Getting to the point where I'm reading a book for that weeks review, which can be a bit stressful feeling as though I have a deadline, but I also have a bunch of books I read awhile back I wouldn't mind talking about. Thanks so much!
Hi - and thank you :) 1) It attaches to my phone, but I needed to buy a separate adapter to do that (USB A to lightning). 2) It varies, but my reviews are usually filmed a week or two after I finish the book. Sometimes I know I will definitely review a book before I start reading it (if it's a big new release for example) but often I only make the decision to to a dedicated video review once I've finished the book
It’s always interesting to get a peak behind the RUclips curtain, so to speak, so thanks for sharing. I’m curious if you ever run into a creative block where you are struggling with ideas for content? And if so, do you have any strategies you use to overcome it?
That's a good question - I haven't yet. Probably 50% of my content is things that wouldn't be impacted by a block (book hauls, TBRs, reviews, etc). For the other stuff I try to keep a decently long list of potential ideas. And it's always good to keep an eye on what other people are doing on BookTube, there's nothing wrong with doing your ow version of someone else's video as long as you credit them
Thanks for sharing. I'm always curious about equipment, software, and workflow that creators employ. I film in my garage and struggle with sound. I think I've figured out a good enough mic set up. Sound is the hardest thing to figure out. Yours sounds great. I use Capcut 90% of the time, and Davinci Resolve about 10%. I use Capcut for most thumbnails, too. Workflow is...a work in progress.
Thanks for sharing, this is very insightful. I've been wanting to start a Booktube channel for a while. Yesterday I actually tried to record a little but my face appears somewhat distorted (like a side of my mouth is not moving) and it got me really demotivated, even though my friend says it's an effect of the light because of a window that is right next to me, said I should just do it. I guess he's right, but still made me really self-conscious. The bit about the microphone is very helpful. I recorded with my iPhone 13 and the sound is definitely not good. One question, when you do long videos do you prepare a script? Do you read out of a screen or just come up with it on the spot? And do you do like takes or do you just stop and resume as many times as needed and then edit?
The most difficult video is the first one, once that's out there you'll be fine! I don't script, I have a whiteboard just to the side of my tripod that I put bullet points of the key things I want to cover. And my aim is always to just have a single take. If I make a mistake (which happens quite a lot!) I just go back a little bit in what I am saying and then start again from that point.
Love your content. I have one question regarding Shorts and long form. I recently started a new channel and noticed i got more subscribers with my shorts, I have since stopped making shorts as lots of advice out there is that shorts should be on a separate channel and they hurt your long form views and video retention... I noticed you make both short and long form, has this had any negative impact on your channels long form videos?
Hi Olly, thanks for sharing your behind-the-scenes! I'm pretty much brand new to making YT videos and I don't have a clue. I'm unable to get things like a microphone right now and my "tripod" is a cardboard box with an orange basket for a prop for my phone🙂. I would like to at least be able to edit (such as being able to cut parts of a video out that I don't want) and wondering if my laptop might have anything built in for that. It's an HP and wouldn't know where to look because I'm not tech savvy but either way I would need editing capabilities to be free. Any suggestions?
I downloaded Davinci Resolve for editing and it is completely free. You can get a paid version but it isn’t necessary. I do have a Mac but it is also available on windows.
Thank you silly! As someone thinking about starting a channel I do appreciate your info. I am scared of editing tho. I have a MacBook Pro / can you do a mini lesson on editing ?? Please? Thanks Chris in CA❤👋
I'm probably not the best person to give an editing tutorial but I will have a think about it. I'm sure there are lots out there on RUclips from people more qualified than me!
As a youtube creator, I appreciate this look behind the scenes, especially since you put out a large number of good quality videos.
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you! Glad it was useful
Fascinating, I'm impressed with your output.
Thanks Jim
That’s a lot!
Ah, this is ideal for me right now! And thanks for your support on my new venture, by the way!
Thanks for this video
Great vid, Olly! I might try that Trello… I could certainly use some help on the organization front. I sprung for Final Cut Pro a while back and it was worth every penny for me.
Oh that's good to know about Final Cut Pro - cheers Dave!
Thanks for sharing, Olly! 😊 I love hearing how others organize their channel content and the equipment being used for filming and editing. Good to know you use your phone to film. I do, too.
Thanks Kat!

Glad you found it interesting, I really couldn't do it without Trello!
Beauty of creating content straight from your phone, did the same on the only video I've done on here so far, interesting. Thanks for sharing. :)
Glad it was useful!

Oh that's great! Really glad you're pleased with it. I really think it's a fantastic light
I cannot believe how many books you manage to read. I read 3 books a week but nothing compares to you.
Reading fast is the only real talent I have 😂
🖤💚

Crazy organized. And don't forget if you're upgrading tech or software to use your daughter's student identification for some possible discounts.
Ooooh, good point!

Thank you! It sounds like they might release a new generation next month so I am trying to hold out for that

I did not mean SILLY Olly! I’m mortified! Yikes. That was meant to be OLLY! 😢
I’ve been called worse 😂

I've been really impressed with CapCut for short videos, it's so easy to use
The out of focus background is the one thing I didn't like about your upgrade. I can't browse your bookshelves anymore. 😉
Ha! Sorry Dave

I haven't noticed a negative impact, but I'm not very good at understanding the analytics data.

As suggested below, I think Da Vinci Resolve is probably the way to go! There are some online editing tools as well like CapCut

@@CriminOllyBlog thank you OLLY! Love your content and keep up the great work!❤️👏
Very interesting video. I tagged you to do The Booktube About Me Tag created by Harriet Rosie if you are interested. It's airing on Friday.
Thanks Jess!
For some reason you gave some Techmoan vibes. Do you follow him on youtube? You should review a gadgets manual one of these days.
I don't! I'll have to take a look
