Stoicism has taught me to feel my emotions and understand why I feel the way I feel rather than acting on my emotions in the moment. This has made my life 1000% better.
I met a girl who disagrees w me on something bigly political, and in the past I would've said so long. But practicing the Stoicism has helped me push that aside and focus on what's really there, and what would've have been an issue, when it finally arose, went completely smooth, I said 'ok' and moved on. I have the tools to handle conflict in the future... Thank you, at 40 yrs I'm finally feeling like I am who I'm meant to be. I like myself. And it's cuz of your books and all the examples/knowledge you've put forth. You've been a huge inspiration and great teacher Ryan ❤
There’s one more that I would add to the list of what people get wrong: That if you have a tantrum or a tirade or get triggered by something or even if you go on a rant, that you are not a stoic or you don’t get stoicism. Stoics were human. They let their emotions get the better of them. They let negative thoughts dwell in their heads too long and then had to shake them off. This is exactly the message of Meditations. MA was talking some sense into himself because he got it wrong and was trying to get it right. Marcus lost his temper sometimes. This is the meaning of The Ego Is The Enemy. When we become trapped in our thoughts and get stuck in the thought emotion loop we become a slave to our ego. And we need stillness to get out of it. That doesn’t make them “not stoic”, it makes them human. I’m saying this because this is a pattern I see over and over. It is a very common criticism of Ryan in the comments from obvious Trump supporters. Those who have been reading stoicism will have already figured out that this is the same as his last point: The stoics weren’t perfect. They were practicing this philosophy. They weren’t perfectionistic, they weren’t giving up completely because they got it wrong once, they weren’t throwing out the baby with the bath water like we see so many doing right now. They recognized their wrong and they made it right.
For far too long I've been asleep, I stopped studying the philosophy & feelings hurt me and dictate what I do more than ever. This is the reminder I needed, making this video into an everyday reminder about how beautiful we can make life be, just because it comes all from within.
Nice shirt! I love Megadeth! Especially the stuff from Peace Sells and Rust in Peace. Their music is so unique bc Mustiane dominately follows an innovative and aggressive power chord pattern he created and dubbed the "spider walk." It's super tedious to learn and takes a lot of time and dedication but it's so useful if you like playing power chords...and it's the only way you can play Megadeth songs the same way he does.
Even Spock has a dry sense of humor. Anyway, I've heard the Christian expression, "turn the other cheek" but I didn't understand it until I red "Ego is the Enemy" and heard Jackie Robinson's struggle to control himself around racists. When you allow somebody the opportunity to strike your cheek, you allow him to reveal himself. And when he does, believe him.
I remember my Educational Psychology professor telling our class that Stoicism was embodied by The Spartan Ideal, and used the example of a student in class in Ancient Sparta allowing himself to die because a snake had bit him, and rather than seeking medical attention he went to his lecture because that was his primary duty. This was almost 20 years ago, now, so my professor probably approximated his understanding of Stoicism as best as he could. This is a critical misunderstanding of Stoicism as a philosophy. A Stoic should not go to class after being bitten by a snake. He would go see the doctor. If a Stoic was told by said doctor that he was going to die by the snake bite, that student would only go to class if it made him feel some kind of peace. Getting bitten by a snake and then ignoring it is ignorance and foolishness. A Stoic would not condone such an action.
Absolutely. I can't tell you how many times ppl look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them I think government is immoral. Anarchism is a legit political philosophy.
If your recent videos are any reflection of stoicism, I would say it is certainly lacking in humour or fun, only virtue signaling and lecturing "losers" for wrongthink.
Stoic, hmm, This is such a terrible word, it's terrible because it isn't obvious what it means, Here is an easier way to be stoic, realize it's not your problem, let it go and enjoy your day. Realize you don't need all this personal development crap. Just realize 99.9% of what happens in the world is not your problem. Have A great day.
Sure people might get these things wrong but you’re pushing self censorship more than actual stoicism. Who’s really buying your books and finding your channel? I WONDER.
Hey, you're the guy who's getting rich off stoicism. I've heard about you. You're selling people coins and selling them advice they could get for free simply by reading Marcus Aurelisus's works. How does it feel to be a millionaire? Spout off a bit about stoicism and make a lot of money. Marcus Aurelius would be very proud of you /s
It sounds like you've got a lot of emotions invested in someone you don't know. I recommend reading a book called The Obstacle is the Way. It might help you with these strange impulses to needlessly lash out?
Jealousy will get you nowhere, bro. Ryan's book 'The Daily Stoic' has brought Stoic wisdom to millions of grateful people. Marcus Aurelius's Meditations are jottings and thoughts that need a good deal of background knowledge to understand.
You don’t have to buy anything from Ryan and the Daily Stoic nor his book store. In fact you don’t need to watch his videos or even pay any ounce of attention to him. What is your point exactly? He’s promoting stoicism and yes, is selling and running a business. Doesn’t make his content wrong and doesn’t mean you need to buy into it. Enjoy stoicism how you want and let others do the same.

I recognize similar sentiment and misunderstanding to how some view Buddhism.
This was insightful! Could you compare Stoicism with existentialism in a future video?
Did Seneca say the opening quote or did Antoninus Pius say it? “No amount of philosophy takes away natural feeling?”
