I think there was supposed to be 3 smgs. The mp5k, smg2 and vanilla smg. But the vanilla smg was slower firing and had a zoom feature. Or at least it was like that in e3 2003.
@@nickie115 In the 2001 beta there were only 2 SMGs. In the 2003 beta, there were three SMGs... sort of. The third and final version of the SMG has a complicated history. It was never intended to be an SMG3. It was originally supposed to be a replacement for the SMG2, an updated version of it (both were MP7s after all). Later, Valve decided that having two SMGs would be a waste of inventory space for the player, so ultimately, the MP5k that was the original SMG1 was also scrapped, and it's grenade launcher functionality was given to the new SMG2. With the third SMG being the only one left in the game, it was renamed the SMG1. This seemed to be a last minute decision, since the gun was never modeled with a grenade launcher, as it wasn't originally intended to use a grenade launcher, so in the retail version of the game, it sort of just fires grenades out of thin air.
xxFalconArasxx TLDR: The Retail SMG was going to replace the Beta SMG (the one in this video) and be one of two SMG’s ingame along with the MP5K.
