    little rule of thumb for anyone wanting to try: practically anything in a packet, bottle, jar (excluding single ingredients like oats, rice, etc.) you can almost guarantee it will contain refined sugar because it's used as a preservative. took me a long time to figure this out lol - buying whole foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.) and making everything from scratch is the way to go!

    Please can you also try out a REALLY strict coeliac diet to highlight how expensive/difficult it is to eat gluten-free too? Sure, a lot of foods are naturally gluten-free - but every day life including simple pleasures can be really difficult. Pringles crips have gluten in them, a lot of packet sauces contain gluten, shops such as Lidl are particularly difficult to shop in for gluten-intolerant people (e.g. a lot of their desserts, special offer items are not gluten free) etc. Would be really great to see someone live a whole week how a coeliac has to and see if you notice a difference in your shopping costs and how happy you are with the number of "nice" things you can have x

    I have been refined sugar free for almost 3 years, obviously with the occasional bit of cake here or chocolate bar there. But I just wanted to say that the sugar substitutes help a lot, and for me as a type 1 diabetic, it is all about reducing blood sugar spikes. So it’s still hard, but I think it’s probably easier for me as a diabetic because I really feel the effects sugar has on my body.
    Love your video and perspective! I really appreciate you trying this out!

    • @rapa2894
      @rapa2894 3 года назад +1

      Sugar substitutes are worse for diabetics than pure sugar, actually. They cause blood sugar spikes and crashes because your taste buds still think you are eating sugar, and then your body sends out more insulin. But because you didn't eat actual sugar, you just crash. It can also lead to weight gain. This has been studied extensively, so I would suggest you look into it for your future health. I have had many patients die because they don't listen. There are a few natural sugar substitutes that are better but nothing is better than eating whole foods, including real sugars, in moderation.

There are so many names for sugar and sugar alternatives that you just start making everything from scratch, but as you see even things that should just have one ingredient (dried fruit! nuts and seeds!) have to be checked as well. I think if anything this vid goes to show how useful sugar can be in cooking for balancing flavour! Almost all tomato-based products have sugar in them because otherwise they end up being incredibly acidic, dried items like dried fruit use sugar to balance the tartness and/or bitterness that can intensify when the fruit is dry, and most (east) asian dishes use sugar along with vinegar, salt (or soy sauce), and other spices to create that amazing "umami" flavour (ex the "vinegar" in sushi rice is rice vinegar and mirin, which is a sweet fermented rice alcohol lol)

    • @redwineandagingerale
      @redwineandagingerale 3 года назад +13

      Definitely! But it's also in everything else and not every product needs it. Sometimes it's added for flavour to genuinely improve a product, sometimes it's added as a preservative, but a lot of the time, they add it because we're conditioned to like sweet things and will likely buy the product again.

  • @jasgem76
    @jasgem76 3 года назад +8

    I agree that everything in moderation is the best philosophy if you are otherwise healthy. The most interesting thing to me about these kinds of videos is the knowledge it gives you about just how many foods have added sugar. Our bodies actually don't benefit from eating refined sugars but they are as addictive as actual drugs so we still crave them. If you go refined sugar free for a while, your body actually stops craving the sugar because it is surplus to our physical needs. We eat 100s of times more sugar in our modern diet than at any time in history so understanding just how insidious it is in pre packaged foods is a great health lesson

    This was a great video, honest and amusing. I smiled through the whole thing. You were very brave because you really love your sweets. A good whole-food sweet treat we like at our house is a medjool date stuffed with a nut or peanut butter and rolled in cacao powder [fatfree cocoa bean], its delish and sweet naturally. Also black bean brownies sound awful but can fool anybody, sweetened with date syrup [cheaper to make than buy -- blend dates with water].As for choc milk or choc pudding use pureed dates too. Add 2 dates to any smoothie, frozen bananas, berries, flax seed, greens, nut butter, etc = instant sugar treat. We often make soy milk shakes [cacao powder, dates, frozen banana, vanila] that are thick, rich and sweet. With popcorn for movie night [uh every night]. Those are just a few things we do to lessen our added refined sugar. Donuts are my downfall too but you're so right ''life is too short'' to do without entirely. Thank you for showing how challenging it is to be completely refined sugar free. Cheers Grace and love from CT, USA, XO

How often do we hear "oh everything has sugar in it now and days" and most of us roll our eyes and go "yeah!", and then when it comes to food shopping we only look for the very obvious and well know signs of sugar, but we don't see the hidden sugars and ingredients that may sometimes be a step up from straight sugar, but can still not be healthy.

By far the hardest was the no sugar for the pure fact that it is literally everywhere.. and it really limits your experiences when going out because like you said, they just swap sugar for sweetener. No doubt the dough had sugar in Pizza Express, and that's what's hard about it all.

    Not because I’m choosing to be sugar free, but because the medical conditions I have severely restrict what foods (and drinks) I can consume without ending up in hospital.
    Missing out on food is hard enough, but missing out on the social aspect of eating / sharing food with others is the hardest. No more grabbing a coffee with friends. No more going over to someone’s house for dinner and actually be able to eat what they’ve made. No more birthday cakes with family. No more sharing a pizza with a friend. No more going out to try a new restaurant with your spouse. It really sucks.

    Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol so not technically a "refined sugar" and it occurs naturally in a lot of fruit and is also used as a sweetener in a lot of products. Anything ending in "ose" is a sugar so glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose etc. are all sugars.

    Refined sugars are things made from corn, cane sugar and sugar beets. On packaging they are presented as sucrose, glucose, and corn syrups. Artificial sugars at lab made. The difference between artificial sugars and refined sugar is that artificial sugar has a low insulin response so it won’t spike your blood sugar like refined sugar will. If you want to use more natural/unrefined sugars try things like molasses, maple syrup (the real stuff), honey and coconut sugar. I only use sugar when working with yeast because I don’t know if it can feed off of artificial sugar. I love use sing natural sugars for substitutes and have been doing it for years. I’m also not saying I don’t have chocolate bars in my pantry as I speak. As a nutrition student I can say sugar is a widely misunderstood topic among society.

    If you did want some kind of a sweetness in bars or homemade treats you could try dates, date syrup or health food products that contain dates like snacking bars. Usually found at health food shops. In Australia I've found some delicious products made with wholesome ingredients and things that are usually sweetened with sugar (like snacking bars, breads, slices & biscuits/cookies, cakes, and even smoothies or homemade caramel sauce) are made with dates. But I do love your commitment to zero sugar & sweeteners and that this video shows that sugar is basically everywhere and in almost everything these days.

    Ive been sugar free for years for health reasons.
    Which naturally means i have to make everything from scratch, cant eat out, cant eat at other peoples homes, AND can only buy frozen or fresh veg/fruit because canned is done in sugar syrup. Most dried fruits have additives too. So if i need dried stuff i usually have to dehydrate it myself.
    Add on i also cant have salt so finding things that are both sugar AND salt free only having lactose fructose & sodium (in their whole forms) aka fruit veg etc. Its extremely hard to find anything processed or convienient or even what youd consider a basic ingredient that hasnt been adulterated. Its honestly horrific how hard and often expensive it is to eat typical whole foods.
    This turned into me growing as much as my own food as possible & preserving it myself for convenience and out of season otherwise i rarely can attain it and if i can its expensive af or you guessed it preserved with sugar and salt.
    Whats worse is theres not even a reason to add sugar or salt. Its not necessary to the recipes savoury or not but its always added.
    its so funny to me to watch people make such a song and dance over essentially living a small taste of my life.
    Homegrown & homemade tastes amazing and is better for you anyway 😊

    from a health perspective, 10 days wont show you anything remarkable, it takes significantly longer for your body to detox, people say its about 21 days to break a habit/addiction, it took me just over a month to crack the sugar cravings i had when i went refined sugar free, everyone is different but 10 days is just scratching the surface on how much your body can change just from going refined sugar free. It would be interesting to see you go without foods that have ingredients in them that you cant read/dont know/chemically made.

    There are various lessons to be taken from this exercise...
    Doing without sugar does have some health benefits. You seem to be the type of person who can eat plenty, sweets included, yet maintain a trim figure, so it perhaps makes less difference for you to do without sugar than it would for someone whose very life could depend upon reducing or eliminating their intake.
    Given the ubiquitousness of sugar within our general diet in the UK, it is no wonder that you missed it so much and struggled to avoid it. What fascinates me especially is the pizza meal you went for on the last day: you speak as if you didn't notice the hidden sugars, but I'd be interested to know if your initial perception of the taste of those items was any different than normal. There are some who, having undertaken a sugar fast, find sugary foods and drinks overwhelmingly sweet upon returning to them post fast. Then again, such people tend to be those who have undertaken the fast for longer, perhaps with the motive of eliminating sugar permanently from their diets; they aren't expecting it and it is an intensely strong flavour to them if it passes their lips, so much so that they don't continue eating or drinking whatever it is that has triggered that sensation.
    Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall would probably note that your most successful moments during your sugar fast were those in which you ate whole foods, doing as little as possible to them. Only whole foods, presented in natural state without refinement or processing of any kind, will be devoid of all except natural sugars. Arguably, eating an apple is better than drinking the juice of dozens of apples, because you get the sugar coupled to the starch in the apple flesh, whereas the juice will hit you with more of the sugar but none of the starch. (Ah, the age-old problem of carbohydrates, which give us something we need and something we could do without...)
    Re. 2:09 - there's one cereal that you can count on to be sugar-free. Unfortunately, it's oats, which at breakfast time are usually made into your Nemesis, a.k.a. porridge!

    I had to do this for a year when I was 11. At the time it was almost impossible to find diabetic friendly foods, but I must say it completed changed my world.
    Obviously, being doctor ordered the health benefits were why I was forced to do it (imagine being a child and having no sugar! Couldn't even eat carrots because they have a high level of sugar compared to most other veg) but in general I do recall feeling just generally mentally stronger. The moment I was allowed to go back to a normal, non-restricted diet my weight gain was quite strong which was fine as I was a child but the lethargy definitely was the most obvious.
    In the end, I no longer craved sweets and such as often and this has been a general pattern in my adult life, too.
    Seems silly, but just cutting down on sugar is amazing for your health and even better for your mental efficacy. Fruit and veg have more than enough sugar in them such that you're not being overly restrictive of it in a n unhealthy way. Just recommend it strongly if you feel lethargic and are struggling with migraines.
    PS. I see no issue with having desserts and sweets etc. I will have them when I crave them. Just wrth noting that BALANCE is important, especially if like me you had hypoglycemia or anything that cuold lead to serious health issues.
