so I was huge leon fan, in about 1971, I was 16 and my brother called and said he got a contract to install outdoor lights on the wall around the house Leon bought in tulsa........He wanted to know if I wanted to help with the job......so I said of course........so one leon takes to Claude's Hamburgers for lunch, on the way, I tell him that I play the guitar, .......well he invites me to come out to a club in Tulsa where he said that He and some friends were going to go sit in.......the Stables Lounge....at about 46th and peoria.......I show up but I am too young and they wont let me in.........so I hung around outside.......after a bit a car pulls up and lets Leon, George Harrison and Eric Clapton out of the car...........memories.

I met Leon in 1979. Had been a fan for several years before that. My friend & I made friends with a guy, can't remember his name, but he was always there at Leon's house in Tulsa. We used to pull in the driveway & talk to him through the intercom. Then he would open the gates &we would drive around the circular drive. I really don't know why. Guess we were hoping one day Leon would be there! The night we met him, we had gone to see him at the Brady in concert. As we were leaving we happened to see his limo. Gary Busey was with him. We followed the limo to Benni Hanna's ( spelling?) at 51st & Harvard. There we talked a bit with him & he leaned into the car window & kissed me. Needless to say, I was kinda in shock! But, here I am 38 yrs later & never forgot! Lol!

I was a young girl in the early 70s . I played his piano book daily, loved his style of singing . He clearly didn’t care about fame.

Same here! Leon Russell was a godsend to me. When a pianist from LA comes up to you and says " man you sound just like Leon Russell " that's a blessing for a lifetime. Thanks Leon. Rock on in that heavenly choir 🙏.

The interview is regarding a Les Blank documentary on Leon from around 1972, called A Poem Is A Naked Person. I've seen it and it's really cool. Leon didn't like all the miscellaneous footage Les would capture, e.g., a building demolition or a snake eating a chicken, and the film didn't come out back then. But it's a great historical timepiece, including some great studio footage from the recording of Hank Wilson's Back! Highly recommended.
