I think this video is slightly inaccurate, my understanding was that dopamine is the feel good hormone. HOWEVER, it is correct in saying dopamine also wants you craving more, this is because our brain gives us small hits of dopamine before doing a task, which is relative to what we’ve experienced before from doing said task.
@@Dog-b2cDopamine is just the promise of a reward. Serotionin is that reward, and the actual feel-good hormone. Impact-wise, its half-life and reactivity is much slower than of dopamine, count weeks instead of minutes Achievement and recognition release it, and the gut bacteria have a huge say in how much raw Serotonin is at your system's disposal to work with. So far for the slow Serotonin. Fast and cheap serotonin would be prescription SSRI to up your baseline initially... and then wreck it mid- and long-term due to homeostatic adjustment plus damage to your microbiom (until you dedicate a hard season to tapering of slowly and weathering the discomfort of withdrawal, gradually rewiring, rebalancing, rebuilding habits to reclaim YOUR independent contentment with stoicism, building on sustainable strategies reliant on your terms and resources.) Sounds good, stays a life's work to keep a hold of.
Interesting, I didn't realise that. Is self-harm something you struggle with or have struggled with in the past? (You don't have to answer that question as I understand it's very personal. I was just curious to hear if you've managed to deal with it so other people could benefit from your answer)
Brilliant work. Can't tell you how many "dopamine detox" videos I've watched, ironically as a form of quick dopamine. This is the only video on the topic that has made me actually feel the idea sink in. I loved when you said "you're not addicted to the pleasure of the thing, you're addicted to avoid the discomfort of being in a low dopamine state." Perfect nutshell.
I second that. Wary and overfed with the other psych-ed hack formats, I even realized that the A-ha would vanish in no time an I would most likely gain just about nothing from this video, unless I actually came back consciously and repeatedly to gradually work all of it into my awareness and action. To know, that the umcomfortable sensations are inevitable and a sign of healing is giving me immense understanding. And to feel like s**t and "negative" is ok and doesn't mean a personal failure. Because when you feel like a failure, you're opening a door for the thoughts leading to giving up. Thank You!
This is a masterpiece of a video. I've been severely depressed for a month now and I think you've provided part of the solution. I'll continue on in therapy but your videos are very helpful in providing context for how these things occur in the brain.
19:35 was a big eye opener. I used to try going on walks after a few friends recommended it to me, and I noticed while on those walks I still felt depressed and anxious, sometimes depending on where I'm walking and if I'm in a public area I'd often feel more anxious. it led me into a spiral of trying different things but none of them were helpful or gave me motivation or joy as you stated. I feel more hopeful and now I'm gonna go uppercut my friends, not actually though but I will start working on ways to recover my slow dopamine and go from there.
I've been very guilty of dopamine stacking but wasn't able to put a label on it. Now I've got it, I'll aim to stop this as it'll only make me feel worse in the long run. Thanks for the helpful video as usual.
One thing you said that blew my mind was that creative types work on dopamine primarily and can be cold. I am a creative and just like Dostoevsky I want to help people but I can't stand being around them. I primarily work with dopamine and can be cold and to the point. It really makes a lot of sense now.

This is excellent! Something else interesting to consider is how this intersects with trauma. When dopamine is high, we are distracted from any negative or painful feelings we may be experiencing. Dopamine allows us to hide from those feelings, push them down, and disassociate. That’s why therapy helps with dopamine regulation because once trauma is healed there is less need to use dopamine as a hiding place.
Mate, You're already like a brother for me (specially because we have almost the same age), your videos are always helping to figure out how to manage my troubles in life and I believe it helps a lot of other blokes like me who are lost at the 20's whith the lack of knowledge about life we haven't on school or from the elders. This whole idea is why I voluntarily choose to be a hobo and sleep in tents and cars and unheated shacks in the winter. I find that putting myself through somewhat hard things regularly helps me feel happier. Staying inside a house all winter leads to insane youtube binging and depression. Sleeping in a fun open-air hobo fort I made behind a friend's house for $200\month keeps the winter blues away. Very good explanation, probably the best what I watched on youtube 😉🙏 My list of getting daily pain 😅 hunger: don't eat after 18-00 (only one banana allowed 🍌) cold water 2 - 3 min shower or bath in the morning, start from like 5 sec some sport activity (lifting weight and running 10 - 15 min) standing on a nail board 2 - 3 min 3 - 4 times a day, start from like 5 sec meditation 10 - 15 min
Hey man, please please please make more of these. I can’t remember the title first one I watched regarding social media but that one was very enlightening. However, I changed none of my habits because of it. I guess I’m somewhat of a nihilist and I’ve been struggling to find reason to try in a world that I don’t like all that much (consumerism and genocide and so on). That being said I still work a job that I don’t much care for, and buy stupid products and just do mind numbing activities all day because I am but a vessel for profit. I’m only 19 and I haven’t decided what I want to do with my life because I don’t really even want to do anything at all. But I really admire that you’re trying to help people. I might just try to do the same.
Watching your videos evokes such an interesting, compelling feeling. This video showed up at the right time for me today, as I might have plunged myself further into youtube's empty depths otherwise - but watching this the whole way through is an active denial to my brain's typical craving. It's uncomfortable to reject the fast dopamine, but in a peaceful and fascinating way: the learning is sparkling and crackling in my brain; rejecting the fast dopamine and breaking it down feels like logs crackling in a fireplace, but the learning feels like tiny bright sparks, and the gradual build of warmth. Guess that's the slow dopamine, haha. To be real, your videos have been helping me a pretty incredible amount since I've made it to college. Being far from home was really difficult in the beginning, because it's been starting a life and social circle from scratch, far away from support systems. I had to give up my therapist because in the U.S there's some healthcare insurance BS that limits the ability to keep online therapists when moving states. But seriously, with so many new things flying at me, your insights have done so much to help me keep my head on straight and grow to be more in-tune with myself and my needs. It makes this strange, new environment feel like less of a struggle and more of a challenge. At 19 I feel like I'm getting a good head start with these wisdoms, and I'm excited to be learning more from you down the line :)
What a joy to read this. I’m extremely grateful you’ve been finding solace in the channel amidst the changes you’ve been making in your life. It sounds like you’re on the right path. I’m looking forward to hearing more about how your journey pans out ;)
I'm in such a bad place right now and have been avoiding real life responsibilities by throwing myself into RUclips, Netflix, Tiktok, etc. I honestly thought there was no getting out of this and have been in my rut for months now. Thank you genuinely, I feel like I finally have the tools I need to save myself. Please keep making videos like this. 🧠💡💪
As a fellow adhd’er I researched it for us. It is not recommended for us to do dopamine detoxes because people with adhd are already in a deficit of dopamine all the time. However, it is good to stick to slower dopamine activities most of the time because we are particularly sensitive to overstimulation with the fast dopamine. Dopamine stacking is actually okay for us to an extent and can sometimes be the only way to accomplish tasks (I.e. listening to a podcast while taking a walk). But overall favor things like reading, writing, drawing, spending time socializing, exercising, studying, working, self-care, etc. over things like scrolling and junk food. Hope this helps!
If a 5 is the average baseline of dopamine. For someone with ADHD their baseline is underneath it. Hence why there are medication to increase the dopamine baseline. Still better to learn to go without it but it does make life easier 😅 Took it for 8 years to then stop. Have been 4 years now and have now started to consider getting back on it because I have gotten stuck in a rutt myself the last 1 and a half year. I never liked taking the medication because everything I enjoyed I enjoyed less because of it. 🙃
The one thing I didn't understand very well was with Protocol 1: Dopamine stacking. You say it isn't beneficial to pairing working-out (slow dopamine) with listening to music (fast dopamine) but the combination makes it MUCH more enjoyable to the degree that I am very doubtfull I would be able to separate the two, which would lead to my work-outs being less enjoyable. Maybe I wouldn't be as motivated. So why is it bad? P.S. I loved the video!!
Just put unwind with Angela Griffin on BBC sounds for the first time ever after watching this and she plays that first. Is that synchronicity? I didn't know it was off the sound of silence
That was one of the best videos I’ve seen on RUclips . Genuinely was extremely useful in explaining my feelings. Thank you . Your videos are very entertaining and very factual. Well done amigo.
I loikes you I does - very good timing as I've been wanting to learn about dopamine much more recently. I watched Dr. Hubermans video too. But I really appreciate the work you put into this video which appears that you have read a few books and jointly summarised and combined the knowledge into this lovely video presentation for us. Many thanks!
Thank you for this, my laptop out and a pen and paper whilst watching - I have a question, you briefly discuss a vision board at the end of the video. Have you done a video on this or provided a "guide”? P.S I admire your pose to deal with an interruption, stumble on your words or make a mistake and glide back on track, without editing -
Gosh darnit what a great vid, my dude. Many thanks for the hard work you put into it! I struggle a lot with trying to tell myself that I'm doing enough and thus allowing myself to reward myself often brings about feeling of guilt. I have decided to allow myself my quick fixes for about two hours in the evenings, but then I wasn't counting my pwo + workout during optimal time of day. Plus adding music to my studies helps me look forward to my studies. Could be undiagnosed ADHD that make me feel like I need a little extra stimulus, or it simply is me setting my dopamine threshold too high through these activities. I find it so hard!
I think of 2 ideas 1 The wheel of fortune/samsara. Desire leads to a cilmbing of the wheel and then a plummet down as a ceasless loop (like our dopamine). The ultimate ideal is to be in the center-disillusioned and acting spontaneously (so wheres the struggle?)but realistically we are usually on the outside of the wheel so lets direct our desire and attention wisely. 2. The Greek idea of Enantiodromia. Opposites (especially when extreme) turn into their other side. The best minds look for key principles in life. Then we can see how a basic principle like opposites applies to any subject. Then it wouldnt take scientists 100 years to understand dopamine. We live in a world of naive specialists. A doctor can study medicine while having no basic understanding of the ph principle of acidic/alkaline. Psychologists can prescribe a serotonin candy for years in good conscience. Smh.
Hey Lewis, not sure if this is something you've covered before but I was wondering if you could do a video covering the contents of what should be in a vision board? Your one looks quite detailed so I'd like to hear what your thought process was that you used to structure it. Love your videos btw. Been watching for a few months now and the way you explain how the brains mechanisms function and respond to different situations and stimuli makes it easy to understand what is really happening behind the scenes and how we can use that knowledge to reprogram our brains to live healthier lives.
Yeah this is me for sure, I just cannot get out of it ATM. Thanks for making vids like this however, I've felt more focused since being aware of how bad it is.

This might be one of the most valuable video's I've watched 🤭
I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and you have made such a change in my life and mind set!! Thank you always!!
It's a pleasure to have you here.
The new channel name is so special!
Truly.
This gets better every video big thanks man.
I’m looking forward to hearing more about how your journey pans out ;)
This is actually the only channel I can watch videos of completely without getting distracted and not finishing. Thank you
I'm in such a bad place right now and have been avoiding real life responsibilities by throwing myself into RUclips, Netflix, Tiktok, etc. I honestly thought there was no getting out of this and have been in my rut for months now. Thank you genuinely, I feel like I finally have the tools I need to save myself. Please keep making videos like this. 🧠💡💪
let's get you out of this rut sir!
thanks for the video, you've probably helped dozens of lives with this one 🧠💡🗿
Thank you so much for explaining this in such a comprehensible way!
As someone with ADHD, this is really hard to do. Not impossible, but REALLY hard
Dopamine deficit condition fr
It's been impossible for me without medication, and I can't take medication anymore because of my heart
Really sucks
If a 5 is the average baseline of dopamine. For someone with ADHD their baseline is underneath it. Hence why there are medication to increase the dopamine baseline.
Still better to learn to go without it but it does make life easier 😅
Took it for 8 years to then stop. Have been 4 years now and have now started to consider getting back on it because I have gotten stuck in a rutt myself the last 1 and a half year.
I never liked taking the medication because everything I enjoyed I enjoyed less because of it. 🙃
@@baejay798yes! Completely helps! And I was hoping someone would talk about this! Thank you from a fellow ADHD person. 🙏👍👌
i love the notes on the right side because they help to remember the information and thats what i want to do
Glad I clicked on this video! I love your authenticity and down-to-earth explanation of complex topics. Please make more of this!
It's too soon to know for sure, but I have a strong feeling that this will be one of the most useful videos I've ever watched. Thank you.
lovely video, funny ending. 🧠💡🍊
“hello darkness my old friend” i felt that
"All rise for the national anthem."
Just put unwind with Angela Griffin on BBC sounds for the first time ever after watching this and she plays that first. Is that synchronicity? I didn't know it was off the sound of silence
I love to watch your videos while smoking weed (my addiction) and have a debate with myself. Thank you.
This is the best video I've ever watched 😂 Ironically This gave me the dopamine I needed
Great video! Thank you! I'm going to throw away the Fruit Pastilles I keep dipping into, I wanted them but I don't actually like them.
Thank you! So much great info and your teaching style is so illuminating! I’m inspired!🕯️
Wonderful ❤. Brilliant 🎉. Thank you! 🧠💡💕
That was one of the best videos I’ve seen on RUclips . Genuinely was extremely useful in explaining my feelings. Thank you . Your videos are very entertaining and very factual. Well done amigo.
I'm very glad that the algorithm washed me here. My life is going to drastically change from having watched it!
Thanks, Lewis! This really helped me!
Thank you, amazing work you're doing for everyone 🙏
I loikes you I does - very good timing as I've been wanting to learn about dopamine much more recently. I watched Dr. Hubermans video too. But I really appreciate the work you put into this video which appears that you have read a few books and jointly summarised and combined the knowledge into this lovely video presentation for us. Many thanks!
hahaha I loikes you I does too
@NewelOfKnowledge 🥰 appreciate you
This made me realize why people who fish or hunt love it so much. It checks all the boxes you covered
Thank you for this, my laptop out and a pen and paper whilst watching - I have a question, you briefly discuss a vision board at the end of the video. Have you done a video on this or provided a "guide”?
P.S I admire your pose to deal with an interruption, stumble on your words or make a mistake and glide back on track, without editing -
You are brilliant dude, I love it!
It was so riveting. Tnanks a lot for the describing. You're doing great things.
This video is so well done, 10/10. Learned a ton and it made a lot of sense of the world
Listened to this whole video while cleaning my house. Excellent advice!!!
your videos have been so helpful, tremendous stuff 🧠💡🙀
Fascinating video. Great work!!!
What a great session hats off to you 💐💐💐 Thanks for sharing this important information with ease great great helped a lot
Thank you always! Your videos are incredible navigational tools! Thank you, always!
Smh.
I’ve never been so early… love your content. Thank you for the way you speak about these concepts :)
This is the first time I came across one of your videos and really love the idea of writing your thoughts on a whiteboard while you elaborate on it. Personally, it felt like everything you said was coherent and there was a nice flow (rhythm) to it. Like a conversation you'd have with a friend. 🧡
You deserve all your success Lewis ❤
You are an absolutely beautiful being ❤❤❤❤❤ with exceptional information and I love the shape of your head
Very timely 🙏🏼 thank you
🧠💡🔱 I am always looking for good Sunday inspiration for the week. I often tap your videos Lewis. You're a good man to give your time delivering this content. Thank you, sir!
As a chemist, the lack of double bonds in that benzene ring is driving me insane, lol.
Huge apologies 😭😭😭😭
@@NewelOfKnowledge You're good, mate
@@tggd8423if it makes you feel a little better, I love your use of commas, mate.
Ah, that's what I was missing! Just didn't realise what was off.
Whoa!! This was phenomenal. Thank you for spelling it out. I needed this!!! Now off to reset. Thank you so much!!!!
All the best in your reset!
I was in a bad rut, my story is crazy so much i would never have believed. Now I'm writing the story come back. Eyes open on the dangers of getting more and the deficit it can create. 🧠 💡 ⛵️
