Hey. I’ve followed you since the start of this channel - these are some of the best casual pictures you’ve shown us so far. I mean, I can see that you are developing for the good. Nice composition, geometry and shapes in there. I guess 50 is the way to go. Well spoken as well Eric!
The point about not giving a camera enough time to understand it, that is exactly right. And if we think like that and consume a lot of YT then we’re heading to a camera store, sadly! So many great points in this video.
Not giving it enough time is absolutely the piece i have to remind myself, it is the reason that stops my GAS most. If I'm not happy with the performance of what I'm using, I know it's 99% of the time going to be user error and not the camera. Do I want to upgrade from my xt30ii to an xpro3? Absolutely. But as you've said before, what I have is good enough. It'll last me until the xe5/xpro4 comes out if I really want those. I'm far better off trying some different glass and see what else I can work with. Is my endgame a rangefinder body style? yes. But I don't have to get there right now. My current hunt is for a good small film camera that I enjoy that is within budget. Almost got an M4 but reminded my GAS that I don't need to spend that kind of money on something that is going to be a "fun" camera. Really enjoy Woodward Camera, they've got a great staff there.
Interesting presentation. Well-done! As for the 35mm film Nikon SLR, well, that is wonderful, and interesting. Now and then, I will use a Nikon film SLR camera. My wife and I have several. My compulsion to add “more better” equipment has largely stabilized, I believe, because I started using a Leica M-mount camera, with one specific Leica M-mount lens, more than six years ago, in April 2018. I visited a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, available at a Leica dealer in nearby Houston, Texas, several times. I had done enough prior inter-webbing to know that this lens produced optical effects that I wanted to see in my images. Obviously, even a pre-owned Summilux is not inexpensive, but, by starting “at the top,” when I added the Leica M system, feeding the “upgrade monster” has largely been avoided. True, there were/are “better” 50mm Leica M lenses, but, to “upgrade,” among 50mm M-mount lenses, would mean either the APO Summicron-M ASPH, which would result in less “character,” due to being more-perfectly optically corrected, or, the Noctilux-M f/0.95 ASPH, which would be a stop “faster,” but, provide similar, but slightly less-desirable bokeh, and be notably larger and heavier. So, neither of these more-expesnive Leica 50mm M lenses would be “better,” for for the ways I use an M camera. True, there is now a Close Focus Summilux-M 50mm ASPH II, but, well, 0.7m still seems close enough, for using a 50mm lens. True, the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH is not uniformly sharp, throughout the entire frame. I am OK with that. My creative choice. I do not regret having added the Leica M system, because it was a desire attempt to be creative with my first M lens, that pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, that “resuscitated” my desire to continue to photograph people. I had retired from a public service career that had concluded with seven years of the added duty of evidentiary/forensic/crime scene photography, during which I mostly used a world-class, top-tier 100mm DSLR lens to photograph (mostly) living, breathing, often bleeding, just-traumatized people, I am glad to have put that behind me. Therefore, after retirement, I desired, perhaps “needed,” to return to a “normal” 50mm focal length, later supplemented mostly by the 35mm and 28mm focal lengths, to photograph people at non-macro distance, focusing manually, while having to pay attention to using the correct shutter speed and exposure. Using film-era lenses that are NOT uniformly sharp, throughout the frame, seems to be perfectly OK. (The Summilux-M 50mm ASPH was introduced during or about the year 2005, which was well before the first Leica digital M camera.) Yes, I know, a Summilux-M 50mm ASPH is considered “too modern,” by some Leica shooters; not “vintage enough.” My creative choice. I am fully aware that my favored Summilux is not an inexpensive lens. I bought mine during a quite temporary good financial time in my life, which coincided with the near-demise of my desire to use a camera. In hindsight, I reckon that it was worth it, to have revived my desire to photograph. To be clear, I do not claim to have been a “professional photographer.” I am not any kind of expert. Have I ever had a “G.A.S.” attack? Yes. I am not immune. Thankfully, most of that happened before I started using the M system! And, most of my acquisitions were pre-owned, so, I spent less, and got more of a return when parting with them. OK, this is becoming a book, or, at least, a booklet. I will stop, now.
I think I have episodes of GAS rather than a continuing compulsion. I think I’m entering one of those periodic episodes now! I’ve had my Leica Q2 since it launched. Fantastic camera and I’m not getting rid of it. I always wanted a Leica M and after unexpectedly coming into some money, I bought the M11 two years ago. I’ve spent most of that time forcing myself to use it instead of the Q2 and have now put it up for sale after accepting that it’s just not for me. I’ve bought myself a Fuji XT-50 as a consolation prize and need to ride out the wave of GAS now. For a few years at least!
They are just tools but the buying experience is a thrill, trying a new camera and finding out its not as good as you were hoping. But you know what works for you. We all suffer the same.
Is the Q2M already gone. Maybe I missed the update in another video. We had an over-under on when you would return or sell it with the line at one month and I took the under. Another good video. Thanks and looking forward to the next one.
Nice pics mate! FE2 is great I use a Pentax MX and I am happy although my GAS urges me to buy a FE2 every time I am on ebay....but I am fighting it as I own zero Nikon glass ....Inside me I know I will end up buying it.....what should I do?
Your photos from the day just go to prove you don’t “need” a Leica. I’ve wanted to own a Leica for over fifty years and have still have never done so simply because financially they just don’t make sense and actually they lack the versatility of some of the cameras I have owned meaning I know I ultimately I’d be dissatisfied. Still that yearning persists though😮 At least you’ve tried a few so can think yourself lucky and maybe you’ve got that Leica GAS out of your system. I felt the same about wanting a sports car so after many years I bought a Porsche. It was great but financially crippling and my wife hated being in it so I sold it after a couple of years- at least I got it out of my system though and am very happy with my four door baby SUV.
I know I make a lot of gear videos, but the reality is I don’t think GAS should be talked about so negatively. There’s a lot of gear heads who like the gear. Then there’s a lot of artist who like using different paint brushes. I think the issue is.. gear heads want to be artist and artist want to be left alone haha. So everyone just needs to accept each other and have fun and enjoy their craft. I honestly think the conversation needs to move off of gear and shift to mental Health regarding sense of self and identity. It’s like people buying different wigs trying to figure out who they are, instead of just rocking what they got and making the most of it or even just knowing what wigs they like the most lol. Point is, it starts with knowing who you are and what you want. We gotta start taking accountability and not blaming the nature of consumerism.
Well dang, didn’t know you watched my Tiny channel. Thanks for being here. I would agree 100%. I don’t blame consumerism but rather myself for not having an identity or knowing what I need and then sticking with it. As a hobbyist and dad, I go between being kid photographer, portrait photographer, travel and landscapes, and making cheaply produced RUclips Videos. Like I said at the end, I think I’ll need 2 cameras to fill those voids. Even then I’ll always wanna try the newest thing.
@@ericrjennings imagine how could it would be if someone started a company where for like a monthly fee you could rent any camera you want for a few days.. send it back.. and get a different one right after.. and just keep that cycle going. Gotta love all of the gear videos with extensive breakdowns, nitpicks and quality grading only to be shown a bunch of poorly composed, uninteresting image samples. On actual GAS, there's nothing wrong with wanting to at least try different cameras, and sharing your experiences honestly can be fun to watch and hear as well. I've got lots of stories from decades of shooting film, and I never get bored discussing it with fellow enthusiasts, but it becomes apparent who truly appreciates what they have, vs someone who just wants some sort of validation. I owned an FE2 as well. Carried it with me while wildland firefighting, for a few years, and it was probably my favorite camera to use out there. Shutter curtain finally crumpled after all the abuse, but there are few cameras I felt as comfortable with than that one.
Really smart and wonderful post. Loved the whole conversation. I'm working hard on my GAS (now there's a sentence). I'm slowing it down as much as I can. Thoughts like yours help me vaccinate against it.
Refreshing to see some honesty Eric. With me the romantic part of me always wants a Leica M series, but I keep giving into logic and buying Canon 5 series. Maybe one day...

Great shots. Great vid. I have a leica MP and a nikon F3 and Fm3a, if I had to sell the leica and use just one of the nikons i would be just as happy. My photos would not be better or worse.
It's great to try new gear. Still have an X-T1. To me, that camera is as good as it gets and Fuji could've just packed up and gone on home after making it.😊 I like your shots at the end, pretty darned good eh. I mean, realistically, who needs anything more than that quality, from what..an FE2 and a bit of old film? Brilliant. And that 'e' 50mm 1.8 is a little blinder.
Eric, My take is that GAS is incurable!! One can be in remission, but, like alcohol addiction, it’s always there, ready to break out…. We have to recognize this fact and avoid temptation. Mainly this requires never reading reviews of new cameras. Indeed it means not following photography channels that constantly hype gear (which is pretty much all of them!!). Now, I know that for your situation (being an influencer?) that’s impossible. So just accept the fact that you are who you are. Don’t have unreasonable expectations of yourself, realize that you will have relapses from time to time and just get on with your life. Just accept that it’s in your genes: you are a GAS Guy 😳 Cheers PS, Actually, I’d recommend getting your car GAS under control first…it’s a LOT more costly than camera GAS. 😬
RUclips and rumor websites definitely don't help with GAS. It's a journey I guess. In my case after shooting several camera brands I know for sure that I won't buy Sony, Nikon or Canon anymore. Those brands are boring for me. I definitely want nice SOOC results jpg or raw and for this Fuji is a king followed by Panasonic S9 with its LUTs which I own and love this camera especially for video. I also love rangefinder style bodies so now I only need to think if I buy Fuji again or go full manual with Leica. I agree with what you said...I could just leave my Fuji X-E4 which was perfectly fine camera and just add Dji Osmo Pocket 3 for video and be done with it. I lost lots of time and some money instead but at least found out what I need in my camera.
You didn't get to try a D-LUX 8? It might fit the "small/walkaround/vacation snaps" Leica you spoke about if you're not a Micro 4/3rds snob. Essentially a LX100 II with Leica upgrades to the menu system, etc.
