releasing Ms.Marvel, a geeky fangirl, during the height of tumblr’s heyday/just 2013 in general was such a smart writing move. it’s no wonder that her first run was so popular. it makes so much sense for the world we live in now with social media that there would be people like that in the marvel universe. i’ve always liked that about her character

I love Carol as Captain Marvel, but recently, when I was re-reading a lot of Carol stuff, I realized that she was a much better character before she became Captain Marvel. She used to be a B-list character, meaning that she could have funny filler arcs and adventures that someone like Captain America couldn't. Being a B-list character also meant that she could have more nuanced struggles that all the A-list superheroes don't always have. But, as soon as took on the mantle Captain Marvel, and became A-list, all the old stuff went down the drain. Like her alcoholism and fear that nobody would like her if she didn't have superpowers. I haven't seen that referenced in years.
Yeah, I read her a lot back in the early Ms. Marvel days and she was generally a good read back then. Pretty basic superhero shenanigans with the occasional deeper story (especially in the 80s). More social consciousness about women's rights than other books, but never to the point where it felt like it was her sole reason for existing. As Captain Marvel some of the charm is gone along with the lighter tone of the 70s. So serious these days, at least what I've seen of her.

Kamala is basically the "Spider-Man" for a new age of readers: a young teenage hero with relatable struggles on top of the superheroics with a unique set of powers. The only thing she's missing is an iconic rogues gallery, but Spidey has been kicking butt for 60 years now so he's had time to build that up.

The original run of Ms. Marvel is legitimately one of my favorite comics I've ever read. It's a shame they've never managed to quite recapture that magic (at least imo) with her subsequent books, but it was enough that she's firmly one of my favorite characters, and I'm always excited to see her show up.
Yeah, early days for her were best...so far. We can hope for a return to that, but even her low points are higher than average. A fun character all around. Although I may be biased, I have a soft spot for "stretchy/morpher" supers in general, they give the artist so much room to get creative and they're usually written to be more upbeat than man supers. Except that joyless insufferable jerk Reed Richards. The man does not belong in the same club as Kamala and Ralph and Patrick and Luffy and even Jimmy, slightly lame as he is. Elastic Lad just isn't his best transform when held up to the high standards of Giant Turtle Man Jimmy or the absurdist glory of Homo Disastrous super-caveman Jimmy.

"The Champions, Marvel's answer to Teen Titans" Yeah, as if there weren't already many of those: Young Avengers, New Warriors, Young Allies, etc. I think for every generation Marvel puts out a group of teenage heroes, while DC just makes new teams of titans.
Marvel just cannot figure out a name because they're all the same thing. Well DC is guilty of this too. Like what's the difference between the Teen Titans & Young Justice?
@@modmaker7617 well, in the 90's DC wanted to separate their young adult heroes (the original teen titans) and their youngest young heroes (Tim Drake, Superboy, the new Wonder Girl), so they created "Young Justice" for the younger young heroes and "The Titans" for the young heroes not so young. It sounds simple, but as time goes by, an event caused Young Justice and the Titans to split... But then the main members of Young Justice form a new group of Teen Titans, and well, comics are comics.
Plus I don't think the Champions are that popular. Their books keep getting very short runs and I never really hear much about them despite the high profile Kamala and Miles involvement. Meanwhile I think the Young Avengers were more successful especially as a lot of the characters majorly introduced in the YA titles have managed to gain greater prominence since then while I can't think of any popular character from Champions who wasn't already popular.

Agreed. Comics need more street-level heroes, and it fits Kamala and her personal story like a glove. A teen hero who is actually written like a teen would make the most sense protecting her hometown and its surrounding locales, not necessarily the whole world.

You said you started this channel to convince people to give the hobby a shot, and you definitely succeeded with me. I had never really had a real interest in comics outside of videos like yours to know who certain MCU characters were. But after seeing your Radiant Black video, when I was at my comic/tabletop game store looking for board games and I saw the Radiant Black volume 1 trade, I went ahead and bought it. I am now keeping up with Radiant Black, Radiant Red, Rogue Sun, I've read Shadecraft, and I'm about to go buy the first issues of a couple new books. You and the great folks at my local shop that have been nothing but friendly in answering my 4 million questions are the reason why I'm so into this hobby.
I was one of the people who got into comic books by picking up Ms. Marvel (& Kelly Sue DeConnick Captain Marvel). She really made an impact on me in high school, made me honestly a more open-minded person & helped me accept my queer identity as I really related to the struggles Zoë went through. She literally means so much to me & I am excited and nervous to see how the MCU will interpret her in the show.
Another "diverse" legacy character that was introduced right around that time (actually just a few months after Ms Marvel #1) was Robbie Reyes as Ghost-Rider, who I really love. He even got a live action adaption only three years later in Agents of Shield season 4, where he was awesome! But after his original series ended he's been kind of mismanaged in the comics and I hope he gets a solo again soon, because what Aaron is doing with him in Avengers right now is pretty dreadful imo.
@@nickasaro8789 not really. The only major difference is that Robbie isn't bound to his uncle's spirit anymore (thanks to Johnny who ruled hell at the time). He has also used his powers to control a dead celestial and the silver surfer's board.
Crazy to learn I only started reading comics right after you (early 2015)! Though jumping in at the height of the Inhumans is exactly why I love that era for them and all the NuHumans (I need more Inferno in my life). Kamala was easily cemented as one of my favorite characters and I now own all her trades. My one big critique for this video (because overall it was good and well researched as usual) is that at the end you kept saying "it wasn't all bad", but you never mention a single good rec or something to counteract a couple misteps that got very overblown.
Marvel definitely oversaturated themselves with new diverse characters. Without giving any particular one the spotlight during crossovers, and *really* not caring about the quality of the writing in some notable cases, potential fans were given nothing to invest themselves in.
Hey Drake! I read a lot of marvel comics throughout the "sjw marvel" phase, but while I did read a lot of books, only a few I could actively remember as very good, most of them weren´t awful or anything, but not memorable, are there any recommendations from that era you could offer that maybe I missed?

I got to be honest I could care less about the politics surrounding it, I’ll leave that debate to someone else, I just like Kamala because I think she’s a fun character that although I would never call myself “hip and trendy” I can definitely relate to the nerd culture and fanfic side of Ms. Marvel. Like anything else I’m just here for good stories and enjoyable characters and I think I can happily say I like Kamala. It was quite informative and entertaining.
I read Ms Marvel and it's petty good. I can't argue about the religious stuff, I mean Daredevil is full on with his religion, how is this any different? The only thing I hate about Ms Marvel is that the upcoming show changed her powers.
I would love for Daredevil and Ms Marvel to talk about their religious beliefs and how it relates to fighting crime/helping people. Also if they introduce Ben Grimm, I would like him to be part of the conversation as well. I know religion was not super important to him, but I do like how he became a good representation of characters associated with Judaism.
"I mean Daredevil is full on with his religion, how is this any different?" Rather obviously, Catholicism isn't demonized by bigots nearly as much as Islam is. Which I find quite amusing, because if you actually listen to what a lot of the Fundamentalists think about the subject, the Pope is Satan's lapdog and "mislead" Christians are worse than heathens. They're kind of careful not to talk about it too loudly in public, but I got forced into attending Fundy bible studies with some of these loons and when they think they're preaching to the choir the anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic rhetoric is on full display. Used to be much more of a mainstream attitude too, and not all that long ago - JFK caused great concern in the country when he was elected because some people were afraid a Catholic president would put Rome's interests ahead of those of the US.
I second that motion for DC, Marvel and other publishers to hire comic drake for marketing/advertising; I love his passion and energy when he tells us about these characters and stories
I like Ms.Marvel and her story. She's definitely a cool character and hopefully the show and movie does her character justice (even with the minor changes)

Did you also hear Feige talking about how the changing of her powers is in accordance to how her story is done to fit into the greater MCU? Kamala’s powers were perfect for her character and storyline in the comics world she existed in, but the MCU is different and has different needs for its universe’s storytelling and changing her powers is to fit into that need. You don’t have to like that they changed her powers, but let’s not pretend that they changed it simply because Feige somehow doesn’t understand her character.

As a response to the middle of the video, I'd just like to say that you're basically half the reason I'm currently into comics. I first found you from The Game Theorists and then followed you to your at-the-time main channel, and then I followed you here. I honestly don't think that if I hadn't started watching your videos, I would've even considered reading any non-Sonic/Mega Man comics. But I did watch your videos, and now I'm a huge comic fan. So... thanks, I guess
I'm a Gen Xer, and an older one at that. If I were 5 years old, I'd be a boomer. I was a typical comic book fan as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s, reading mostly Spider-Man and the Hulk. Then I grew up, and like a lot of people (but obviously not all people) of my generation, I quit reading them. Kamala Khan got me back into the world of comic books. I had already become a fan of the MCU films, but I hadn't gotten back into comic books. But then I just started hearing and reading so many great reviews of the then new Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) that I decided to pick up a few issues and read them. Now I have a collection, not only of Ms Marvel, but also Captain Marvel, the old Carol Danvers Ms Marvel, Eternals, and a bunch of other titles I found interesting for whatever reason.
The tumblr days were really the huge push for diversity. Marvel caught on at the right time and dc was late to the party. Now dc is trying to work on their diversity(which is a slow uphill battle) and marvel is more focused on character development for their diverse characters.
Ms Marvel was the volume that got me into comics in about 2017. I was so used to comics having universe or planetary stakes that it was so nice to have a hero that was just worried about their fellow teens going missing.
Great character! The thing she needs is a Spider-man level Rogue gallery. The bad guys make the stories. She has a dumb parrot guy. Even when he was a neighborhood level hero, he had really weird and cool baddies. Stories are always the goal.
Speaking for me, I would prefer Marvel not introduce any new characters for a few years and instead dive into their deep bench of underdeveloped international heroes and make them into good characters as well.
I really liked snowguard from the champions books, a mystical shapeshifter with magical connections to spirits. She was honestly one of my favorite parts of that series, and it makes me sad that she wasn't given more time to shine. The biggest issue with pushing all these new characters is that if you find one you like, chances are theyre stuck in limbo since theyre either not super popular or marvel doesnt know what to do with them (please give me more gwenpool i beg of you)
I'm excited to watch this video, she's one of my favorite Marvel characters, but I'm going to have to delete it from my viewing history afterward because the word "SJW" in the title is going to absolutely ruin my recommended videos
A good story needs to be number 1. A good story can be enjoy universally regardless if you relate or not, some stories require specific details (such as political edge (like the winter Solider film benefited from it) but others don't (like endgame which works due to being able to stick the landing to a decade long story arc in a satisfying method.) A good story ultimately just works
As a young person, I like the older characters a bit more than the new ones. It's probably because they had more time to marinate in character development, while new characters are dry but marvel really wants me to eat when they're not ready.
Marvel shot themselves in the foot by introducing a lot of these diverse characters all at once, especially the characters that replaced the ones before them. I think a lot of these newer characters are really good, but for a while there Marvel didn't do a good job at not making it feel forced
Great Video Drake! I think it's wild how Marvel and DC don't advertise their comics anywhere else but other comics and specialty stores. Like It'd be incredibly smart and Easy to Put an ad for an upcoming, current or already released Series for a character In front of their movie. I remember when I went to go See TASM 2 before the actual previews started they played Ads for the TASM 2 Toyline and that Tie in Video Game no one talks about. I'd like to imagine that doing something like that but for the comics the movies are bases off of comics related to those could make a huge impact on Comic Sales.
If I were to place diverse characters, I would want to handle them as people you wanna care for or be relatable and add new ones but definitely need to take time that everybody need to know a better.

I always wondered why Kamala was so popular and this video gave me a good idea of why. Now I'm even more excited for her new D+ Show. I know the change in powers is super weird but, as long as they keep what's important about her character, it'll turn out great. I just hop they keep the scene where she morphs into Carol. That's a great message right there that would work well in live action (Also, it'd be a good chance for a Brie Larson cameo lol)
16:19 Kid you not, that’s just prompted the idea of a character that is always seen with a backpack. I walk and use public transport, either it’s pockets or a backpack or both. I guess having something in a pocket that seemed unreasonable to exist in such a suit and its (pockets or on person storage) constancy at this point in my life just brought that idea into existence.

I loved the original pre-Secret Wars series. It felt like they’d captured that rare lightning in a bottle that made Spider-Man so special: a young hero relatable to the youth of the day. I was the same age as Kamala and found her very relatable. But once Marvel pushed her into the Avengers and overexposed her, I did lose interest. In her original solo book, she was keeping her identity secret, even from her family. She had a normal life as a teen. How was she supposed to maintain this while also being a public figure in the world’s foremost superhero team? Marvel got overexcited and matched the character’s real-life popularity with in-universe prominence in a way that felt inorganic to me.
Some people r so hypocritical. They used to call her copy of Mr fantastic despite having other powers of becoming giant and tiny. Shape-shifting. Healing etc and now they t calling her green lantern copy when she can literally scratch her self in that blue power and other stuff.
Yup! they really suck at advertising. Sometimes I can't even figure out which book I"m supposed to buy next, especially if I"m behind and needing them in trade paperback

I know you said it in your video but my issue really is they pushed so hard into diversity that they didn't bother writing interesting characters. My mindset with diversity has always been "Can you insert any other person into their shoes?" Like Miles Morales for example, he's your average kid growing up in a hectic city, has personal issues at home, viewed his power as a curse rather than a blessing until later learning it's not what you want to do but have to do, he just happens to be black. Yes I know he's mixed but you get my point. At the end of the day I want the best person at the job to be doing the job, not just because they're ethnic but because they're the best at it. Hope I've expressed myself well enough.
The problem is that kind of limits the amounts of stories you can actually tell. There are tons of interesting stories specifically about queerness or race tahat by definition can't be universally relatable because some people don't experience it.
@@ravenfrancis1476 I get what you're staying but I think you misunderstood my point. My point is write an interesting character and make them relatable then you can add the toppings later. Deadpool is a good example of this. He's pansexual but that single characteristic doesn't define him as a character it adds to him. Loki also applies to this. In lore and in the MCU/TV series it's said he's slept with animals, other entities, male, female, he's very much genderfluid but again he's more of than just that. Going to sounds like a broken record here, sorry. But a character should be the sum of their parts not just one defining characteristic.
@@cuzzbaby I mean, on some level you're not wrong. But people's identities do play an important part in shaping who they are as a person. Unless they're in a world that's, like, a hyper-progressive utopia if they're a minority that's going to significantly impact their lives in ways I don't really think people who aren't minorities can't really conceptualize. Like, a lot of my interactions with people have been colored by the fact I'm an autistic bisexual trans woman. I'm going to have a different experience in most environments than a neurotypical cisgender heterosexual person. I also think if you're going to use examples of 'good representation' you shouldn't use examples the community they're supposed to be representing are fairly consistently disappointed in. Loki's bisexuality was only mentioned in a single throwaway line, and the writer had to fight to get that in (the writer that fought to include it is also conveniently the only writer not returning for season 2) and Loki's genderfluidity was functionally erased by all the other Loki's reacting as if a woman Loki was significant enough to warrant confusion, and the writer angrily dismissed genderfluid people who called him put on it. Deadpool is a bit better, admittedly, but not by much. Not only does he play into the "pansexual people are sex crazed maniacs that'll fuck anything that moves" stereotype, but his attraction to men is pretty consistently played as a joke in ways his attraction to women just...isn't. And there's all the problems with Deadpool 2's representation like reducing Negasonic and Yukio to background characters that don't do anything, and violently killing off one of the first openly gay X-Men from the comics within five minutes of his first appearance by dropping a helicopter on him..

Yep. Safespace and Snowflake were examples of characters who seemed more designed to pick up advertising by angering reactionaries online. Same goes for that baffling "Young X-Men" thing during the Hickman era.
It still is.
@Oswald Cobblepot yeah. Young rippa did a fantastic job on showing the sales and the actual local interests of the character. I have no idea what Comics Drake and his fans are so defensive for this?

"Diverse characters for the sake of money" as the industry has completely imploded

"The Champions, Marvel's answer to Teen Titans"
Yeah, as if there weren't already many of those: Young Avengers, New Warriors, Young Allies, etc.
Marvels stuck to the champions longer than they’ve stuck to the Young avengers at this point.
@@modmaker7617 yeah but that decision is this one off thing, marvel hasn’t stuck with something like dc has with titans
Marvel has had a lot of success and a lot of failure with progressive comics-

I have not watched this video but based on your comment I already like this channel.
Robbie is such a great character who's criminally overlooked!
Agreed. Character deserves better. A very interesting take on the legacy.
Honestly I really like legacy characters
Shame. I was excited to see Robbie on The Avengers. Is it really that bad?
@@nickasaro8789 not really. The only major difference is that Robbie isn't bound to his uncle's spirit anymore (thanks to Johnny who ruled hell at the time).
Champions was the book that brought me into comics, and I love it

Hey Drake! Great job on the video. It was quite informative and entertaining.
Marvel has had some truly awesome series the last 4 years.
Daredevil, Venom, Spider-Woman, Thor, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Hellions
I read Ms Marvel and it's petty good.
I can't argue about the religious stuff, I mean Daredevil is full on with his religion, how is this any different?
The only thing I hate about Ms Marvel is that the upcoming show changed her powers.
I would love for Daredevil and Ms Marvel to talk about their religious beliefs and how it relates to fighting crime/helping people. Also if they introduce Ben Grimm, I would like him to be part of the conversation as well. I know religion was not super important to him, but I do like how he became a good representation of characters associated with Judaism.
"I mean Daredevil is full on with his religion, how is this any different?"
Rather obviously, Catholicism isn't demonized by bigots nearly as much as Islam is.
The lack of marketing is a major issue that people overlook in terms of issues with superhero comics

"Making this power set perfect for this character and this storyline."
You hear that Kevin Feige?
To be fair, stretching powers look really bad in live action films. Which is why I'm not confident in Netflix's One Peice tv show
Did you also hear Feige talking about how the changing of her powers is in accordance to how her story is done to fit into the greater MCU? Kamala’s powers were perfect for her character and storyline in the comics world she existed in, but the MCU is different and has different needs for its universe’s storytelling and changing her powers is to fit into that need.

I honestly don't think that if I hadn't started watching your videos, I would've even considered reading any non-Sonic/Mega Man comics. But I did watch your videos, and now I'm a huge comic fan. So... thanks, I guess
She is one of my new favorite marvel heroes that were created. I only read her first run till much later but was definitely still good
I'm a Gen Xer, and an older one at that.

A good story can be enjoy universally regardless if you relate or not, some stories require specific details (such as political edge (like the winter Solider film benefited from it) but others don't (like endgame which works due to being able to stick the landing to a decade long story arc in a satisfying method.)
A good story ultimately just works
*enjoyed
As a young person, I like the older characters a bit more than the new ones. It's probably because they had more time to marinate in character development, while new characters are dry but marvel really wants me to eat when they're not ready.
"I guess by this point there's been two or three ad breaks by now" -comic drake, immediately preceding an ad
Marvel shot themselves in the foot by introducing a lot of these diverse characters all at once, especially the characters that replaced the ones before them.
I think a lot of these newer characters are really good, but for a while there Marvel didn't do a good job at not making it feel forced
Ms. Marvel is what drew me to Marvel comics as well. Eventually DC comics.
I just came here to say that the second you said there have probably been 2 or 3 ad breaks it immediately cut to an ad. Excellent timing

Kamala Khan and the Batgirl of Burnside was what got me into comics.
I’m shocked that this man only started reading comics in 2014, it seems like he has been reading them his whole life. 🤯
They’re doing the same thing in the MCU too
Some people r so hypocritical. They used to call her copy of Mr fantastic despite having other powers of becoming giant and tiny. Shape-shifting. Healing etc and now they t calling her green lantern copy when she can literally scratch her self in that blue power and other stuff.

I tear up every time I hear that speech from Stan Lee about inclusion. RIP Stan. Excelsior.
I agree.
I cannot belive you only got into comics recently, that's insane.
Also, the first few volumes of Ms. Marvel are one of the few comics I've actually read, and they were amazing.
Ah Kamala. The character who started “woke” marvel and the one who definitely did it the best.
Trump supporter detected. Opinion rejected
I would say Moon Girl aka Lunella Lafayette is also a good character
@@teamrocket7400 oh hell no actually. Trump sucks ass. That’s why I put woke in quotes. I just genuinely don’t enjoy most of those characters. I might wanna try moon girl like the comment below said though.
@@teamrocket7400 but is he wrong?
And she bombed at the streaming service
'at this point there have been two or three ad breaks by now' i had 0 until you said that and i got launched into an ad break lol
Always love these. You rock!
Donnie Cates is absolutely carrying Marvel with his run on Thor and now Hulk. It’s what got me back into comics after so long.
His Venom run is also great
Zdarsky's works are also pretty good
