@@mttylerdurden9 As much as we hate hiatuses, when you look at the process of how Manga is put out, it makes you realize “Maybe they should take a break for next… Eight years?”
Wow, Miracle Man's legal history is as dramatic and complicated as...well a comic book. Many twist and turns, even Todd getting sued by that Fashion magazine feels like a, "Because Comics" moment.
Comics often do a sort of meta commentary with the plot. DC's whole anti-crisis stuff was essentially a meta commentary of DC trying to hold on to its own ways. Source judgement is the critique of the audience, World Forger and the 6th dimension is the DC execs, and so on.
Honestly, the whole McFarlane debacle revealed the hypocrisy of the Image founders. How creators rights were well and good until it began to threaten their paycheck. They supposedly formed the company because of how their bosses treated them, but as the bosses of their own company they acted little different. I’m glad that things have, supposedly, gotten better and am glad that there is a company besides the big two producing work that isn’t all just fucking superheroes. But this lawsuit and the stories I’ve heard about the founders’ antics will never make me buy into the idea that they are ‘nice guys’ or supposed bastions of creative freedom.
The creators rights thing was not a big deal for them. It's the toy deals that are an issue, since that's where most comic companies make most of their profits and there Mcfarlane could make money of creator's property
What happened is the same: Todd just valued profits over people. He was making millions off merchandise and he should have shared that with Neil back when he had the funds. Instead he hoarded his wealth, wasted more of it in a lawsuit his lawyer should have told him was unwinnable, lost more in counter-lawsuits, before having to file for bankruptcy. Like every other greedy businessman, he can't have most of the money, he needs ALL of the money!
"and am glad that there is a company besides the big two producing work that isn’t all just f*cking superheroes" Apparently Archie Comics doesn't exist.
Fantastic video, every time you describe Todd McFarlane It makes me giggle. "Todd, who can start a fight in an empty room" being one of the best, lol. Man, I never knew any of this. I love Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman, and have always felt uneasy about Todd, now I know why, lol.
Todd's fights with Peter David in the 90s (through Peter's 'But I Digress' column in the back of CBG and Todd through the letter columns in his own books) were EPIC. When 'The Toddler' realized he had painted himself into a corner and couldn't win the argument he just posted monthly sales figures for Spawn -- somehow equating more sales as proof he was a better writer and declared himself the 'winner' (of what, no one was quite sure of at that point). Todd managing to bankrupt himself in completely stupid and unnecessary ways years later was a more than justified dessert for one so narcissistic and hypcritical. Neil Gaiman, OTOH is still just as humble and funny as he ever was for one who continues to be a fountain of good ideas and even wittier writing.
My favorite part, was when the judge basically fed Todd McFarlane lore from his own Spawn series, in regards to Dark Ages Spawn to debunk his claim over the character, which was essentially a ripoff of Medieval Spawn, who was in fact a commisioned derivative of the original Spawn that Todd originally wrote off legally as being unworthy of royalties, but somehow his his version of it demanded compensation, haha. So weird and wonky, this legal battle itself could have been a comic itself.
tbf the only things in common were an hellspawn and being in the middleage but the two versions were different like The Master of the Universe and Berserk.
Okay that judge who schooled McFarlane on his own character's comic lore is the greatest thing I've ever heard about. Fantastic video. Nothing short of master-class work.
Never liked McFarlane tbh. I began despising him starting with ASM #300. Hell, even the Marvelman creator, Mick Anglo, didn't want him touching his character. There is a reason Alan Moore handpicked Neil Gaiman. And now it looks as if both Neil and Mark Buckingham will be able to finish the Silver Age Series starting this October! Can't wait!
Man, why couldn’t us Sonic fans got _that_ judge for Penders V. Archie Comics & Sega of America case instead of the dotard that not only never understood copyright right as it pertains to licensing characters, or ever read a comic book in his life?!
I can understand why Alan Moore became so bitter toward the comic book industry. He saw no end to companies trying to screw him and his fellow creators out of their rights. It's proof positive why a union is necessary for all forms of creative media.
@concept5631 Disliking companies is no excuse for having a bad outlook on characters. Moore is just like Garth Enis, an edgelord who writes about characters and fundamentally misunderstands what makes those characters who they are before then assassinating those characters just because he has a hate boner for super heroes. Either that or he writes a painfully edgy story about heroes of his own creation so that he can be all "Look guys if Super Heroes were real they'd all be sex obsessed crazy assholes! This is why Super Heroes suck"
Yeah it's still weird seeing my name and logo at the end of a RUclips video of a creator I've watched for years 😂. This came together amazingly, great job Drake!
Gaiman: "read the timeline. How could you have any respect for someone who behaved like that, over and over?" Not sure, Neil. I know my respect for Todd dipped dramatically learning about all this.
I feel like they might be leaning into Miracleman/Marvelman as a possible replacement to the Sentry since the Sentry has himself been something of a poisoned chalice who they can never quite get to work. I also feel like Miracleman has the benefit that he's *actually* a long lost Golden/Silver Age character, and not just that as a marketing gimmick.
Yeah, Miracleman/Marvelman is basically a better Sentry than Sentry. He has actual history tied to the Golden Age unlike the retroactive/fake backstory they made for Sentry and would be a fresh take on the concept. Sentry being killed off recently seems set up to work in this character.
It's weird to think that Todd McFarlane, the guy who advocated for creator's rights and was one of the founders of Image Comics, went through this whole ordeal just because he insisted on keeping the rights to Gaiman's work/characters. That said, this video was excellently put together. I hope it was worthwhile.
It... really isn't, sadly. Image was plagued with that kind of nonsense from the beginning, especially with Rob Liefeld's shenanigans. Once McFarlane was the person writing the checks, instead of receiving them, he quickly found out he did not much care for it.
@watchm4ker Yeah I'll give you that it’s just hard because the McFarlane's are family friends and they've always been nice to us. Hell when Todd found out I was going to a convention in Vancouver just to see him. He mailed me and my friend backstage passes so we got in for free
In a lot of ways Todd was also the 90s equivalent of a Stan Lee figure. He had his own “soapbox” where he spoke to fans; he has his own, memorable public persona; and he has a muddy legacy (that most people probably don’t know)
Wow, I knew Angela was a part of the Miracleman/Marvelman debacle, but I didn't know how tightly linked she was to it. Glad she's with Marvel now, I love her dynamics with Thor and Loki.
@@ranwolf7650 I doubt she’ll be part of the Thor mythos considering they gave her role of Odin’s eldest to Hela. If anything, I could see her being a variant of Hela over in Loki, or see Marvel using her on the second roster of the Guardians, seeing as she’s closely tied to them as well.
@@WhiteRaven696 Or they could homage her Spawn origins and have her be an alien bounty hunter. She would make a good ally/enemy for the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Shout out to Allan Moore for taking one of his favorite childhood properties and making it something so dark and weird. Lord knows I wouldn't be able to take Tom and Jerry and write a story about the existential dread of ceaseless reboots.
If I had the opportunity to make a darker version of something, I would probably remake that animated version of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer as a somewhat raunchier, wackier, musical murder mystery, maybe with Santa as the villain.
Honestly I got an idea for that It'll be a more Animal Man style deconstruction but it would basically construe to Tom and Jerry continually feuding over decades, never changing, compelled by nature to spend their entire existence trolling one another, while both subtly want to break this cycle
I've only been a subscriber for about 6 months but I'm so glad I found this channel. The quality of your content is truly amazing and very informative.
I remember becoming a huge fan of the character back in 2014 or '15 when I discovered this "cool superhero series by Alan Moore early in his career" was being reprinted by Marvel. After quickly catching up, I was excited to hear that Gaiman would be continuing where he left off, because that cliffhanger of the return of Young Marvelman had me salivating for more... only to hear no news after the series was finished being reprinted. I had figured maybe it hadn't been as profitable as Marvel had thought it would be and decided against bringing Gaiman and Buckingham on to continue where they left off. More than half a decade later and we're finally getting an update.
I was confuse when I saw an omnibus comics of this title being sold in our local bookstore in 2012. I was like "oh Marvel has another "Captain Marvel" character. When I read about the story I was more confused glad Drake & his colleagues cleared it up. Despite the issue being convoluted.
@@rememberthisname9965 hahaha that sucks. It was on sale in my bookstore when I saw it with seal unopened. It was sold at least PH ₱250. (though I can't afford it at the time.) Which if converted in today's currency to dollar is only $3-4.00. It's a reprinted copy from Marvel by Moore run. As I browse to sample copies that was opened. Allowed for viewing. With nudity that caught me off guard. When Marvelman woke up in his dream and taking to his wife.
@@rememberthisname9965 anyway I always question that popular local bookstore. Which have multiple branches nationwide. As it's always sell books for cheap price even the latest release. They are either buying copies in bulk or theirs shady business going on.

This was an absolutely WILD ride of a video. That whole rights issue is fascinating. I might have missed this while watching, but I do wonder: does Marvel actually own the old rights to Miracle/Marvelman? Or are those rights still floating around in the void? Still an absolutely fascinating ride of a video! I applaud you for your in-depth research! (Also I squealed when Sasha showed up. I was not expecting to see the wig lord make an appearance haha.)
@@vullord666 My guess is that Atlas had plans to rebrand to Marvel, and they didn't want one of their first comics to come out of their rebrand to be called "Marvelman" out of fear that everyone would think that he represented all the comics they had to offer. I mean, that would make the most logical sense, right?
That story of a judge that hit Todd with the Spawn lore as a rebutal or whatever is somehow a bit wholesome, no matter the reason. Was the judge a fan? Then the fan really had a lot of integrity and it is both admirable for liking the source material but acknowledging that Todd was being an ass The judge wasn't a fan but felt the need to familiarize with the topic for some reason? It sounds so cool that the judge actually cared for the intelectual property enough to look into it, many would just dismiss it as either "Kiddie stuff" (comics in general, not spawn) or just bs, cool judge. Did the judge just had a kid or teen related to him that nerded out with the judge when they heard in which case he was going to work and the judge felt compelled enough to listen to their venting/observations of their hobbie? man that's wholesome af and you know it.
This is absolutely insane! So much bickering and lawsuits between creators all because of stuff that stemmed from the original Captain Marvel. This is probably the messiest and most convoluted battle over comics I've ever learned about.
The Fawcett Captain Marvel comics are legendary. Far better than DC'c Shazam or Marvel's Captain Marvel (not that it's much of a feat) The point being we lose a great line of comics so the big boys could put out garbage.
@@conniethesconnie : Marvel's first Captain Marvel (after they got the rights) was a pretty decent character, and his death (cancer if I recall) is one of the most famous in comics. Most of the iterations since then, esp the latest have been trash and failed to catch on.
Very good and thorough video. A small side detail I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention- When Mick Anglo made Marvelman, he also made another character for a different magazine named Captain Universe, who was another Captain Marvel ripoff (he even had the monicker of "the Super Marvel"). So that's three different Captain Marvel ripoffs that Anglo did. And as a nice bowtie in the end, Captain Universe was then revived in... League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, by Alan Moore, the book he's retired on. Meaning what's arguably his first real major critical hit (at least in more of an independent sense rather than working with a big license like Marvel or Doctor Who) was a story reimagining a Captain Marvel ripoff as a dark edgy deconstruction, and his career ends with a story that while having a similar tone, has a Captain Marvel ripoff in it as a genuine unironic shining beacon of hopeful old superherodom.

Well now we know that Comic Drake, Owen Likes Comics and Casually Comics are all tight. And that just tickles me as pink as pink can be. Not to mention gobs and gobs of other comic tubers. A video about drama showing creators getting along, it's a wonderful juxtaposition
Man this released right when I needed it. I stumbled across Miracleman a couple of months ago, and found his story incredibly interesting. The fact that there was even more going on than the Wikipedia page let on is just mindblowing, and this story is just insane. Incredibly well presented and well done, another great video as usual, Drake!
I never understood the backstory when I was purchasing spawn products back in the day this is very enlightening... This is why I was so confused about Tiffany and Angela.. in my young man I thought they both died in that issue..
Just watched Owen Likes Comics’s video on Miracleman, now Drake drops this! Miracleman/Marvelman is honestly such an interesting character, both as a character, and as an actual entity in pop culture
Great work Drake, this was such an amazing and informative video. It's hard to believe that some obscure characters from the '50s could lead to such a tangled web of legal drama that would reach into the next century. I had no idea that the likes of Gaiman, Moore and McFarlane have spent decades engaged in this secret war over a character that I'd never heard of until a month or two ago. Finally, it was nice to see Owen pop up, after his own excellent video introduced me to the character. Then on top of that, Sasha randomly appears in full judge wig mode - that was the cherry on top!
Honestly, Bravo, this was a fantastic video and it has gotten me interested in reading the old Miracle Man stuff. Probably one of your best videos. Great job!

Great video. 31:59 Todd is not posing with his lawyer, it's actually Brian Holguin (writer of Aria, Spawn, Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal) who testified in the trial.
Since you mentioned Neil Gaimen, is the a chance we can get a history of sandman as a series? You have done a couple videos about the world and characters so why not the real world legacy
Awesome video as usual. I already knew pretty much everything as I was actually following the whole feud as it happened but you did a great job summarizing and presenting the story in a very easy to follow way. Congratulations.
I have not started the video yet, but I see my boy Marvel Man up there and I know it's ah gonna be SPICEY! 1st thought: Captain Miracle is a refference to Marvelman who is a refference to Captain Marvel who is a refference to Superman who is a refference to Hugo Danner who is a refference to Sampson who is a refference to Hercules who is a refference to Gilgamesh who is a refference too...and the list goes on and on... 2nd thought: It's as if when the cringe of the 90's died, all of McFarlane's power went with it. 3rd Thought: I think McFarlene is a much better merchandiser than comic publisher. 4rth Thought: Keep Marvel Man in his own continuity. He works about as well as the Watchmen work in Mainstream DC...that is to say not at all. Hell what makes Marvelman stand out compared to other super heroes now a days is his bizzare world. You think that character is gonna sit on his thumbs and let Dr. Doom's country, Namor's Kingdom or Wakanda be around? Ha! The guy has more than enough juice to bring those countries down and no amount of Avengers could stop him nor his family from doing so. If they nerf him than the're defeating the point of bringing in the character. No. Just let Gaiman finish his work and if they really feel the need to? Ragnorok Marvelman's world (fitting since Marvel Man and his family are contemporary mythological gods).

@@Popcultureguy3000sega and archie's fault for deciding not to fight the case at all
Everybody's gangsta till the Judge teach you about comic book lore.
I can understand why Alan Moore became so bitter toward the comic book industry. He saw no end to companies trying to screw him and his fellow creators out of their rights. It's proof positive why a union is necessary for all forms of creative media.
At the same time, I don't like his attitude towards people that like superheroes and he does have a fundamental misunderstanding of them.
@@TheFLAMEXD Maybe if he wasn't dicked around for most of his career he'd have a more positive outlook
@@concept5631Just because he was dicked around, doesn't give him any right to look down on superhero fans.
@@TheFLAMEXD Never said anything about defending whatever he said against fans.

Alan Moore was a victum of the non-contract/handshake deal with Marvel and it cost him.He was pissed about it too.

Yeah,Moore learned the hard way.
Yeah it's still weird seeing my name and logo at the end of a RUclips video of a creator I've watched for years 😂. This came together amazingly, great job Drake!
I love that we've become friends and I'm so glad to bring you on board! You were a great Todd McFarlane!
Gaiman: "read the timeline. How could you have any respect for someone who behaved like that, over and over?"
Not sure, Neil. I know my respect for Todd dipped dramatically learning about all this.
Todd is a "habitual line stepper."
I read this as he was saying it. Coincidence is mindblowing
Hey be nice he's a family friend and he's really cool. He gave my uncle drawing lessons
Marverlman/Miraclemans an alternate Captain Britain universe Marvel UK Starlight Citadel,
Excalibur/Witchblade brought me here.
Lol, the first issue of the sentry is basically a rip off a Miracleman issue 1
Money can change a person. Especially when they get a lot of it very quickly.
"He's the Vince McMahon of comic books"
Wow... that made... TOO much sense
In a lot of ways Todd was also the 90s equivalent of a Stan Lee figure. He had his own “soapbox” where he spoke to fans; he has his own, memorable public persona; and he has a muddy legacy (that most people probably don’t know)
Having met Todd on more than 1 occasion, I would agree that this assessment was spot on!
@@dajokahbaby1506 Equating Todd McFarlane to Stan Lee, in any capacity, is an insult to Stan Lee!
I love that! That is too funny!
Todd McFarlane was more like Eric Bischoff.
Wow, I knew Angela was a part of the Miracleman/Marvelman debacle, but I didn't know how tightly linked she was to it. Glad she's with Marvel now, I love her dynamics with Thor and Loki.
I'm half convinced she's going to debut in Thor 4. Whether she's related to Thor is another question.
This debacle really made Todd sound like a massive hypocrite IMO. Glad to see he got his ass handed to him.

@Block Lord all? now that's a stretch
@Block Lord I don’t think all of them are. But some certainly are
Shout out to Allan Moore for taking one of his favorite childhood properties and making it something so dark and weird. Lord knows I wouldn't be able to take Tom and Jerry and write a story about the existential dread of ceaseless reboots.
Not with Warner above your head
I would watch a dark and gritty reboot where Jerry finally killed Tom and has to deal with the existential dread of being alone for the first time.
If I had the opportunity to make a darker version of something, I would probably remake that animated version of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer as a somewhat raunchier, wackier, musical murder mystery, maybe with Santa as the villain.
Allan Moore is the goat
Honestly I got an idea for that
It'll be a more Animal Man style deconstruction but it would basically construe to Tom and Jerry continually feuding over decades, never changing, compelled by nature to spend their entire existence trolling one another, while both subtly want to break this cycle
They were still working on it.
I was confuse when I saw an omnibus comics of this title being sold in our local bookstore in 2012. I was like "oh Marvel has another "Captain Marvel" character. When I read about the story I was more confused glad Drake & his colleagues cleared it up. Despite the issue being convoluted.

Then the fan really had a lot of integrity and it is both admirable for liking the source material but acknowledging that Todd was being an ass
The judge wasn't a fan but felt the need to familiarize with the topic for some reason? It sounds so cool that the judge actually cared for the intelectual property enough to look into it, many would just dismiss it as either "Kiddie stuff" (comics in general, not spawn) or just bs, cool judge.
Did the judge just had a kid or teen related to him that nerded out with the judge when they heard in which case he was going to work and the judge felt compelled enough to listen to their venting/observations of their hobbie? man that's wholesome af and you know it.
Love the idea of a judge researching Spawn for research and coming out of it invested in the lore.
@@matti.8465 That's awesome.
Some of it would have been still nuts but DC would have definitely bought up Marvelman if he'd been called Captain Atomik or something.

4rth Thought: Keep Marvel Man in his own continuity. He works about as well as the Watchmen work in Mainstream DC...that is to say not at all.
