This subclass really needed some kind of always on 3rd level ability. A low level Psi Warrior can easily burn through all of their Psi-Die and be left running on fumes the rest of the day. Sure you can get back one die per short rest but that’s a bandaid, not a cure. If you’re going into combat with a single Psi-Die you get to be special once before turning into a Fighter without a Subclass.

I think the best way to build it early on is go 17 16 16 8 8 8. Using the half elf. Take the crusher feat with your first ASI. Your Dex wisdom and charisma will suck but you optimise the effectiveness of your abilities and remain tanky.
Once you get to level 7 flight compensates for your lack of stealth (I'd argue it gives you advantage your feat don't touch the ground so half of your lack of stealth will be fixed). Level 10 fixes the lack of charisma and wisdom because you can auto end conditions.
Crusher gives you another forced movement option and you can cause an enemy to take fall damage once per turn and then get advantage with the rest of your attacks.
Telekinesis is just really useful out of combat and inside you get an extra attack which makes it more effective than using a psionic strike although that could allow you to get advantage on every attack by making them prone.

  • @Melorific
    @Melorific 3 года назад +62

If psi warrior didn't use INT, this would probably be my favourite fighter subclass. It can just do so many interesting things. Especially in combination with action surge, you can really stretch some of these abilities for admittedly niche uses. (Move something over a 60ft chasm. Double dash for 180ft of flying movement)
One thing of note about the telekinetic master feature is that you get the bonus action attack as long as you are concentrating on it. You don't have to use the telekinesis spell as your action on subsequent turns to benefit of the bonus action attack.
So even if you're not keen on using it as a spell. You can use it before combat to attack 5 times every turn without drawback for 10 minutes.
Time to bugger your DM for a headband of intellect.

I am kinda surprised, I expected you to be a little higher on this sub-class. I am playing one now, and I absolutely love it. I am playing a high elf, and grabbed the Fey Touched feat for Hunter's Mark and I bounce between long bow and shield with rapier. After 8th level I am going to dip into Wizard for Blade Singer, and with the new abundance of half feats I am able to boost my Int score, and grab some useful crowd control and utility spells, which is nice because I can save a lot of my spell slots for casting shield once I need to keep that off hand free. We have a Barbarian in the party and I find the Psy Shield pairs nicely with the Barbarian's damage resistance. I agree that you have to play a little lean with the ability scores, but there are some clever work-arounds that put it near the Battle Master in terms of output. I love your content, Chris. Keep up the awesome work!

  • @McCrappy

If you're building for a campaign starting at 8+, I've noticed that the Battle Smith 3 / Psi Warrior X build has some interesting synergies beyond the main draw (INT-based attacks). I built a great weapon master, so these benefits might not fit every kind of build.
    1. Battle Smith gets the Shield spell while Artificer gets Absorb Elements, both of which are great for a martial to have access to.
    2. The Mind Sharpener infusion lets you infuse robes; the main benefit likely won't anything amazing for you, but you can use the infused robes for the Material component of Artificer spell-casting as per "Tools Required". Martials won't want to waste a hand on holding tools, and this infusion lets you get around that.
    3. The Returning Weapon infusion (or Repeating Shot, but that requires attunement) gives a GWM fighter a way to use extra attack with a thrown weapon (or hand crossbow, if repeating shot). This is great to have for a Psi Warrior in particular, because you can use Psionic Strike up to 30 feet away on a weapon attack (extra chances to land a hit to proc).
    4. Faerie Fire is on the Artificer spell list, which is a spell that you'll love to have up as a GWM. Now you can cast it yourself, and free up the main caster's concentration for something else. Using an action surge to get faerie fire going and attack on the beginning turn of a combat would be a great opening salvo, and you'll have Mind Sharpener and CON save proficiency to ensure you never drop concentration.
    5. You won't get this feature until level 10 with this build, but PSI-Powered Leap will be a lot more viable to use given you'll have access to Feather Fall with your Artificer dip.
    6. Steel Defender will scale his offence with your proficiency bonus, so he'll always be able to do good damage. His HP will unfortunately always be low, and you might have better things to do with your bonus action at some point. But, even just having him next to you constantly taking the dodge action, granting disadvantage with its reaction or taking an attack roll for you, will still be a welcome addition even if he never survives a combat.

Something to take into account is that by 18th level you have 12 psionic dice for long rest, so you could cast Telekinesis 13 times which probably is a Telekinesis in every combat encounter. Sound pretty strong for me, far stronger than other fighter's features.

  • @foxoninetails_
    @foxoninetails_ 3 года назад +3

I'm a bit late to the party here, but well done! A few thoughts:
I would hazard a strong guess that the art is supposed to represent Bulwark of Force rather than Protective Field. That would explain both the arrows (cover is generally more associated with ranged attacks despite also affecting melee), as well as the multiple attacks being stopped (since the cover lasts 1 minute instead of just reducing one instance of damage).
As others have mentioned, the Tiny object clause in Telekinetic Movement is 100% designed for recreating that moment of Luke retrieving his lightsaber in the wampa cave, or other "retrieve dropped weapon/macguffin at range" moments. In a lot of cases, _mage hand_ could do the same without much issue, but this effect being faster and more direct can be useful in some situations. That specific piece of the ability is very situational, but it's absolutely badass in the not altogether rare case that it's exactly what you need.
While I agree that on paper a 5th level spell at level 18 seems underwhelming, I think you sell _telekinesis_ specifically a bit short. It's an excellent battlefield control spell that allows you to really screw with opponents, since as long as you maintain concentration you have pretty much unrestricted license to hurl enemy after enemy towards the nearest area control spell or environmental hazard for a full 10 minutes. And that's not even getting into moving objects with it, which with an amicable DM can turn into a _lot_ of falling rocks damage. With the ability to cast it as much as 14 times without even a short rest, compared to a level 20 Eldritch Knight who can't cast it at all or a level 20 wizard who can only cast it 9 times before taking a short rest if they spend all of their upcast slots, that's an impressive amount of usage for, in my opinion, one of the most versatile mid-level utility / control spells in the game.
If I'm being honest, I don't think that being MAD is a strong point against Psi Warrior in this case, at least not relative to other MAD sub/classes. While yes, you will be stretched a little bit thinner than other fighter subclasses in that regard, you really only need to focus on two ability scores for a Psi Warrior - Intelligence, and Strength or Dexterity - which is a totally manageable spread compared to some sub/classes that require 3 or even 4 well-boosted ability scores to function at maximum capacity.
    - Constitution is less of a concern here than for most fighter subclasses, though obviously still good to have, since you mostly get abilities that either give you a boost to your defensive capabilities (Protective Field, Bulwark of Force), or give you ways to control your enemies' positioning on the battlefield and avoid being attacked effectively in the first place (Telekinetic Movement/Thrust/Master), making raw hit points a less pressing concern compared to someone like a Battle Master or Champion who'll typically be right in their opponents' faces with little to prevent direct attacks beyond their armor.
    - On the opposite end, Wisdom and Charisma are entirely unnecessary for obvious reasons, especially given that Guarded Mind gives you an easy way to break out of a lot of the most potent effects that would require a Wisdom save.
Overall, I do agree that the Psi Warrior is in many ways more flavor than meat. It's not going to be the most powerful option for building a hyper-optimized fighter in most situations. That said, the flavor it brings is so stellar, and it does still bring enough meat, that I think it's absolutely worth giving a try, and you can provide immense value to a party if you make good use of what it gives you. That value just won't be the straightforward, head-first brawn that's usually associated with the fighter by default.
In terms of what I'd personally combine this subclass with, I absolutely love the somewhat obvious choice of the Telekinetic feat. Having a slightly weaker version of Telekinetic Thrust available in 1) more situations and 2) without spending a resource is awesome, and it feeds the loop of push and pull abilities that this subclass absolutely thrives on even further, plus _mage hand_ is an excellent "Force ability" to have on hand. Magic Initiate is also amazing as always, with my particular top choices being _mage hand_ (if you didn't take Telekinetic), _friends_ (for some low-power mind tricks), _shocking grasp_ (for a little bit of Sith flavor), and _shield_ (for an extra boost alongside Protective Field and Bulwark of Force). Fey Touched can also give you a rare and excellent opportunity to use _command_ with Intelligence to really knuckle down on mind tricks. And of course, a dip into bladesinger never hurt anyone either.

My biggest issue with the psi warrior is that the defensive option doesn't get upgraded at 6th level. something like 'add your level' or 'add half your level' to the damage reduction would really help this out. reducing damage by 3 to 10 isnt really worth much imo, especially on a limited resource.

3 levels bear totem combined with 17 levels psi warrior is the best tank in the game imo. Resistance to all damage while raging, reaction shield to reduce damage even further, limited flight for extra mobility, ability to knock flying enemies prone, ability to end charm and frightened, ability to reposition fragile mages, and +2 AC while you rage. On top of all this, it's one of the few fighter subclasses that gives its capstone at 17 instead of 18 making it ideal for Barb multiclass.
As for ASI and feats, Sentinel, GWM, and Tough are a must. Sentinel gives you reaction when you run out of psi dice and map control. GWM with reckless attack is busted. You honestly can keep INT at 8 if you wanna max all your physical stats. Your protective shield will still give you +1 but your psy strike will be -1. Not the end of the world because our psy strike will still knock prone even if we roll no extra damage. INT at 12 feels nice but it's not necessary. 20 CON and tough are most important for maximum tankiness but other than that do what you want.

  • @elliotbryant3459
    @elliotbryant3459 3 года назад +3

I feel like psi warrior's features that utilize Intelligence are inconsequential enough that you can probably dump intelligence at 14 and be ok, -it's not like a monk where you also have AC and stunning strike tied to it. The level 3 features only add or reduce a couple points of damage; Level 7 is only a dc for a once per turn shove tied to a limited resource; Level 15 lets you select more targets for an aura that gives +2 to AC and dex saves, which is pretty ok; at level 18 the telekinesis uses Int for the ability check to restrain but that seems like kind of a utility/vanity feature if you don't have action surge available to set up restrain advantage for yourself, otherwise you're probable better off just attacking. So ignoring the benefits Int brings, you still have: the ability to deal or deflect up to 1d12 damage, telekinetically move willing creatures or large objects, temporary flight, resist psychic damage, end charmed & frightened conditions, grant half cover to at least one creature, and all the utility benefits of telekinesis.
Although it is pretty unfortunate how few uses you get. -A battlemaster with the fighting style and martial adepts could have 8 dice Per short rest +1 per initiative when starting with 0, whereas psi warrior is limited to 12 uses per long rest +1 recovered per short rest. IFor a long rest resource I would have tied uses to either to fighter level or 3 times proficiency, -and maybe just make telekinesis cost 2 to dice to cast again after the first time, granted this would work worse with multiclassing. With all that being said, form me this still looks tied with Battle Master and Eldritch Knight as far as most interesting Fighter game play goes.

The Telekinetic Master feature can be improved see solely for the bonus action attack.
It only requires you to concentrate on the spell, not spend an action to use it. It’s probably more of a damage boost over an encounter than the level 3 feature as the one die can give damage over multiple rounds.
It seems like it could be quite easy to set up before an encounter too, as it can be activated and used to open doors and move boulders and such that may be concealing enemies. You just have to keep concentration up. This fighter not only has proficiency in constitution saves and indomitable but can also use protective field to reduce damage and Save DC.

I've been liking this as subclass as a tank/controller. My character is level 4 with psi Warrior 3 wizard 1. 16 int and dex, 14 con, started as custom lineage to get Telekinetic feat. For damage I do Booming Blade + Telekinetic Push (feat) which is like a less reliable BB + Cunning Action disengage for rogues.
What it's really strong tho is battlefield control via movement manipulation. A Telekinetic push/pull with the feat can be a free disengage for an ally most of the time. The 3rd level Telekinetic movement feature is like the push/pull on steroids. You can put another character (say a barbarian) into enemy range or get out a squishy character (like a rogue) surrounded by multiple enemies. The utility is very similar to how casters use teleportation so a lot of the same principles with regards to tactics applies. At this level, only the wildfire druid can beat the psi warrior with regards to the repositioning ability.
One scenario in a recent session that involved me using my abilities together nicely was Telekinetic Move (action) + Telekinetic push (bonus action) to move 2 allies out of enemies + Action Surge disengage to get my self out. It allowed our Sorcerer to cast an aoe without it hitting any of us. So basically I turned a chaotic melee into a situation which gave my caster another chance to land AOEs.
Psionic protection is like a ranged interception fighting style, tho I think of it more like a reaction heal, so I would use it similar to a healing word aka only use it "revive" an ally by reducing fatal damage so that they can take another hit. Psi die management is similar to spell slot management (which I also have due to Wizard 1,mainly for Shield/Absorb Elements and BB/GFB cantrips). Due to this, it kinda feels like a Wizard in terms of having to evaluate how much resources you'll put for every situation which I personally like.
The bonus damage feature for a Psionic die I don't personally like because I'm more of a tank than a damage dealer and the other 2 uses are more valuable in my opinion, also as a damage buff it's nowhere near as good as other similar things like Divine Smite so if I were to make a damage dealer I'd look at other thing instead of this.
So for low levels, yes Psi Warrior is not the optimal choice for a frontline fighter, but in terms of utility I think it's a pretty good subclass.

Another thing about the capstone. Yes, telekinesis relies on your Intelligence, but only if you are targetting a creature with it. Other than using it on objects, you can also simply maintain concentration on it without using your action to target anything with it. This way you can attack normally with your action and still get the extra bonus action attack even if you are fighting an enemy that can reliably beat you in the telekinesis ability check contest.
Sure, getting a bonus action attack for ten minutes and nothing else might be good, but it's not exactly matching the power of 5th level spell. Though, the fact that you can do it for just over 2 hours a day without taking a break makes it a very viable use

Re: Telekinetic Movement. Since there's a free use that doesn't require a die being used, this is great for making a save by moving a pal from danger or who's falling. But the "tiny object" aspect is a pretty niche "snatch the macguffin off the unholy altar and let's get outta here before they see us"-type thing.

I feel that CHA is a lot more important to a paladin than INT is to psi warrior. For a paladin, aura of protection is huge, and CHA also lets you prepare more spells and boosts the DC for so many spells and subclass features. For the psi warrior its effects for the most part seem to be of lesser consequence, mostly just adds or subtracts a couple points of damage and raises your DC to shove a creature [up to once on your turn], an ok half cover aura, and eventual telekinesis checks. Definitely wouldn't dump INT but I would be fine leaving it at 16 or maybe 14. But I agree that the telekinetic feat would be sweet on a psi warrior!

Delaying extra attack is not really a big issue if you start at higher levels and because the artificer gives you access to booming blade to compensate for the delay of extra attack. That way you can dump str and focus on int, enough dex for med armor and con.

The Psi Warrior is great at high levels most campaigns never reach.
The damage reduction ability needs to scale with level so it remains relevant, either increasing the number of dice like a cantrip, replacing the INT bonus with level or half level, or some such. Additionally, the damage increase should loose the 30' range limit so it can be used by archers and the wording changed so it's doubled on a critical hit - the Psi Warrior infuses the attack with energy that is released (and the psi die consumed) only if the attack hits.

Psionic Strike is apparently an entirely different and separate damage roll from your attack, so no benefit from crits.
This means it does have other benefits though.
    1. It can gain hexblade proficiency bonus damage since it’s a different damage roll.
    2. It causes an additional, separate concentration check.
    3. It’s unaffected by features like uncanny dodge that reduce attack damage.
    4. Potentially causes an immediate failed death save if the target is knocked out from the initial attack.
    5. Since it’s not actually a melee attack itself, it cannot be used to “safely” knock out a creature with this portion of damage.
Probably more but I’ll have to keep thinking on it...

I think this class gets a lot better if you have an artificer in your party who can just hand you a headband of intellect at 10th level, which would mean you could start with an int of 14, then have it auto-boosted to 19 at 10th level, leaving you with more-or-less OK (if not great) save DCs right through level 20 without having to give up your feat selections. Even with the good later-level abilities though, this class feels very similar to a reflavored battlemaster with less options and a worse save DC to me- I like that Tasha's has brought back that cool earlier-edition psionic flavor, but I feel like the mechanics of the psi warrior put it firmly in a niche that was already filled perfectly by an existing subclass.

  • @binolombardi

You misrepresented the protective field feature.
It can reduce any instance of damage to a single creature, regardless of that damages source or type.
Failed saving throw, attack hit, damage from a failed check, even received from no other roll like fall damage.
Can reduce damage that isn’t even a damage roll like guardian of faith.
It’s a small reduction, but it’s always applicable so long as sight and distance req’ed are met.

  • @reespewa
    @reespewa 3 года назад +3

Honestly, all I could think during this for most of the features was: couldn't you just reflavour the battlemaster? They regain all of their resource on a short rest and have as much at low levels. AND they have many more manoeuvres, particularly post-tashas, usually achieving the same things and offering more variety. The only big benefit at low tiers of play is the 60ft flying speed, a dex fighter wouldn't necessarily need this and an Eldritch Knight could take misty step at a similar level.
Only place this class really comes into it's own is high tiers of play, and while bulwark and telekenesis are nice they aren't game changers for a fighter and are easily outshone by Eldritch Knight at these levels: I'd rather Eldritch Knights flexible spell casting even if it's at using lower spell casting levels (e.g. Haste or Fly can often be more useful). Also the spell casting "stacks" with multiclassing where psionics doesn't.
There just doesn't seem to be enough different with this class to separate it from the other classes? I would've liked to see some truly psionic abilities, like predicting an enemies attacks or influencing them in battle. As is this class just puts a thin layer of telekinesis onto the fighter, and a fighter doesn't need psionics for that when it's had the shove action from level 1.

    • @reespewa

The level 3 of this subclass starts as okay and becomes very bad very quickly.
The best thing about it is they had actually built in the scalign into the level 3 feature, instead of spreading it all over like with battlemaster.
Psionic strike is good at 3rd and 4th level. 1d6+2 additional damage is impactful, even. But. Once extra attack comes in, it doesnt hold up, because once per turn. And the damage being tied to a secondary (or maybe a tertiary ability score) is super not good. Level 5 battlemaster wants something dead, attack twice, burn menacing on every hit, action surge, attack twice, burn menacing on every hit. That is 4d8+12+4d8, and 4 different instances of a wisdom save. Burned all superiority dice.
Meanwhile, psi striker has 6 dice, can only burn 1. If both classes at level 5 only use one die per turn, the combat must last 5 rounds for the psi knight to show any advantege, As much as I dislike short rest classes, a battlemaster is actually effective at doing something, while the psi warrior is not.
Protective field is the same. 1d6+2 damage reduce is nice on levels 3 and 4. Level 5 and beyond, one of two things happen. Either the amount of incoming attacks increase, or a single instance of damage grows to be waaaaaaaaay bigger. A reaction of 1d8+2 does not keep up.
At 17th level, a reaction of 1d12+5 at best damage reduce flat out does nothing.
If they wanted to make it a long rest class, number of dice equal to class level, and expend up to intmod at once, once per turn. That would turn the protective field into a 3d12 damage reduce at level 17, which can actually do things.
As things stand, a psi warrior doesnt have enough resources to be a long rest class, and the ways it can expend those resources dont have the impact they need.
This subclass is very, very badly designed
