Finishing the Duluth Traverse | Part 2 | Mountain Biking in Duluth, MN

  • Back again to tackle the Duluth Traverse! It’s been six days since I had to bail on my first attempt, due to a broken shifter. I’ve replaced the shifter, and the fall colors are absolutely brilliant in Duluth!
I finished the entire ride today, and it’s definitely something I’m proud to have accomplished-it’s a big ride! My total for the day was 41.1 miles, with 4,487 feet of climbing-plus the 24 miles of pavement back to the car! I was completely wiped out at the end of this ride.
If you’re thinking of riding the Traverse, here are a few thoughts, with a link to the route I used below:
    1. Bring plenty of water. I had 2.5 liters in a backpack, plus a bottle. I refilled at the Hartley Nature Center (32 miles in). In all I drank between 4-5 liters!
    2. Bring plenty of snacks. Figure at least 5 hours of riding to finish the Traverse (a couple more if you have to bike back to your car). There are places you can stop on the way to refill, but I always like to have snacks on me for when I hit a wall.
    3. Use navigation if possible. The Traverse is made up of A LOT of trails, and while signage is great overall, there are certainly some tricky intersections and unmarked areas, even some neighborhoods to navigate. At a minimum, I’d download Trailforks or MTB Project onto your phone, to be used as a trailside reference. I used a Wahoo Elemnt Roam, which is very convenient mounted on the handlebars.
    4. Know your limits. This is a BIG ride, and it was harder than I thought it would be. The trail ratings are mostly green, with a few blue, but this is Duluth mountain biking. The distance and elevation will wear you down. If you’re able to get a shuttle to one end so your car is waiting for you at the finish line, I would not hesitate to do so.
    5. Pack light. Other than food and water, and any tools to help you get out of a jam, I would minimize the weight you are carrying. I carried a mirrorless camera with a very small tripod on this ride, and although the pictures are great to have, I’ll be going without next time I ride the Traverse.
Here's a link to the route I used on this ride.

So nice you had to ride it twice, great work getting right back up to Duluth and filming again. One of the big Minnesota rides that riders should aspire to complete, it’s definitely a great feeling checking that ride off the list!Looks like the fall colors were even better than last time, Duluth in the fall is the best 🍁

So nice I had to ride it twice! Fall colors were definitely hitting hard on this ride, was a total treat taking in all of Duluth at this time of year. Stoked to check this off the list, couldn't agree more with that. Looking forward to getting some rides in with you next season!

@@robonbikes would love to do that ride. Other than Spirit Mtn. Hawk Ridge was my favorite, but I really liked the trails going down into town with all the slabs.

Finally got around to watching this. What a beautiful time of year to make this trek! It doesn't look like it could have been any better weather for an adventure!! Other than maybe a few less vertical!!! 🤣
Side note: Im working on a little side project and would love to get a hold of you somehow to discuss..

It was great to watch this and not be pedaling haha; Ahh climb “FU”😂 had me rolling. Crushing this ride, doing the Hawk ridge alt line steep rocks! Dug the snap shots along the way. With sun light to spare, this looked like an epic Traverse.

Yeah man, I dig the navigation on a ride like this, but it grinds my gears when it says "climb" 35 or so miles in! 😠 Was great to check this ride off the list!

Nice job, Rob! That ride is no joke, man. It’s a grind to say the least. You need tons of water infused with electrolytes and plenty of food to survive, as well as a positive frame of mind. The climbs are relentless and to say this is a “green” ride? I beg to differ. The trails may be green, but when you string them all together, it takes a “black” effort to complete the entire DT. As a local rider, I feel this is a MTB badge of honor to anyone who can finish the DT!

Ha ha that’s how I felt too, total badge of honor. Definitely a grind towards the end there!

@@robonbikes and when you’re by yourself, it would be very easy to just say, forget it, I’m done. It takes a lot of mental fortitude to keep pushing.

This is great stuff! I hope to do this next year. Do you happen to have a Strava link? I'm really curious about your return trip on pavement once you get past the Canal Park area.

Have you ridden the new Theo Wirth black line yet!?

Great timing! Rode there yesterday for the first time, unaware they put all of that in. That roll-in was super fun, the rest of the trail will take many more rides before I can hit everything. A fun addition for sure.

Rob, Making the trip from Missouri to Duluth this week. Where did you part and start for this video?

I parked and started from Chambers Grove, the trailhead for the Mission Creek trail system. I would check Trailbot before starting, as Duluth has received a lot of rain this Spring.
