Back to Piedmont | Ride with Minnesota MTB | BOB, DM, Mejumpolis
Today I'm riding with Evan from the Minnesota MTB RUclips channel. If you haven't watched his stuff, it's a must. Check it out here: www.youtube.com/@UCNTfOyUTxZI8Ffx91FEa2oA
We're at Piedmont riding down the Nimby Cluster. Original plan was to ride Hawk Ridge and Lester Park, but those trails were closed due to the rainy spring/summer we've been having. We went down Dr. Diablo, Mejumpolis, BOB and DM, talked Duluth, bike trails and filming. It was a great day out on the trails!

First Ride on Cuyuna's Double Black Technical Trail | Sledgehammer | Mountain Biking Cuyuna
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.28 дней назад
Sledgehammer is Cuyuna's big-featured, rocky, high-consequence technical trail. Located in the Mahnomen North unit, and accessed by the Backcountry trail, this trail isn't for the faint of heart. This was my first ride through Sledgehammer. I took my time and sessioned each big feature, bypassing a couple I didn't feel comfortable with riding solo.
The One and Only Home Brew Trail | Brewer Park | Mountain Biking Duluth, MN
Просмотров 702Месяц назад
In this video Randy and I ride the Home Brew trail, in Brewer Park, Duluth. Joining us was Rudy, the lead trail builder at Piedmont and Brewer. Rudy works with COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores) and is one hell of a rider. He was kind enough to slow down for us, show us some fun lines, and talk about how to care for, as well as plan the future of, a trail as widely adored as Home Brew. Al...

For today's ride I met up with Duluth locals Randy and Andrew, who took me down some of the trails on the Nimbly Cluster at Piedmont, in Duluth, MN. Joining us later in the ride was Kim and his dog Ozzie. Kim works on the trail crew at Piedmont as a member of COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores), and Ozzie is a schnauzer who is a very good boy, and a seasoned trail dog. I've heard a lot abo...
Bertram Chain of Lakes Mountain Bike Trails | Monticello, MN

If you like unique wooden features, you'll love Bertram! This video captures these unique features during my first ride at the Bertram Chain of Lakes Singletrack trails near Monticello, MN, which is roughly an hour west of the Twin Cities. There are skinnies of variable construct, drops and more than one teeter totter. For my money these wooden builds are the highlight of the trails out at Bert...
The DJI Mini | A Good Drone for Mountain Biking?

I use a DJI Mini 3 Pro to capture unique shots while out making mountain biking content. This drone takes stunning 4K 60fps footage, and it comes in a very small package, making it the perfect companion to take along on an outdoor adventure. Packed with features like ActiveTrack and MasterShots, in this video I go over why the Mini 3 (and the DJI Mini 4) is such an effective drone to capture mo...
There's Something in the Air at Sherman Lake | Lino Lakes, MN
Просмотров 1 тыс.3 месяца назад
On paper, the Sherman Lake trail doesn't look like much: 1.5 miles of singletrack, mild topography, and not very convenient parking. But once the two-way connector trail ends and you're on the loop, it's pretty easy to get lost in the aura of the place. Pathfinder Trail Building did great with what they had, making the most of the elevation, giving riders a few quick runs, and even some small j...

Join me for a look back at last year, with one eye on the future. In an effort to stoke the ol' stoke furnace, this is a look back at the moments that made up one hell of a riding season. The trails, the views, the people...the minute and the epic, all mashed into a loop of collective memory. I checked a lot of first rides off the list last year, and hope to do the same again this year!
Trail was CLOSED for a Reason! | Mountain Biking Purisima Creek Redwoods | Half Moon Bay, CA

This ride was from June 2023. I was out in California and got in a few rides, this one shorter, but a lot sketchier. Some months before, during California's rainy season, this area was walloped with several atmospheric rivers, a term that was new to me, and which I came to learn basically meant there were extremely heavy, long-lasting rains. The area saw devastating floods, the hilly areas expe...
Biking on a Frozen Minnesota Lake
Просмотров 2536 месяцев назад
Biking on a frozen lake. Normally, by the time the ice on the lake is thick enough to be safe, a fair amount of snow has fallen. But this is not a normal winter. This was a quick, but very memorable ride, across part of Centerville Lake. The wind was howling, making the ice pop and crack almost constantly, and pedaling over the deep cracks in the clear, dark ice was eerie. Happy to have gotten ...

Wow, that shot turned out amazing!! Glad you suggested it and brought the drone out for several clips that ride, Redhead is an amazing place for the trails and scenery! Had a great time shreddin’ the red with you that day, can’t wait to see how the rest of the footage turned out!!
Heck yeah, I’d say Redhead is one of the better MN trail systems for drone shots. Some great wide open spaces. Had a great day riding Redhead with you! 🤙
Here early 🗣
Excellent 🎉 All time edit Rob!
Thanks man! 🤙
Good stuff Suggestion: Edit (chop) this up into small sections and make shorts.
Thanks! Yeah I need to do that 👍
I am planning to do this solo. However, I think the longest ride I’ve done is about 14 miles. Any concerns/advice on riding this solo? I’m firmly an intermediate rider - comfie on blue, wary of black. Any specific gear for safety you’d recommend?
It’s 30+ miles out and back if you do Jackpot and High Climber, with substantial elevation for a Midwest trail. If 14 miles is the longest you’ve done, I’d recommend starting at the Britton Peak trailhead near Tofte, and doing the out and back on Jackpot Only. That would be about 20 miles. Understand that these trails are remote, and cell service is spotty at best, so bring plenty of food and water. Besides a helmet, I’d also pack a small first-aid kit.
I haven’t ridden that trail since last year. Looks like a lot of those skinnies are new
They definitely have a fun assortment of wooden features, worth checking out again for sure!
Making me want to move there! Thanks for showcasing
I’m two hours away and it’s not close enough!
I've upgraded from a supermarket all rigid steel 26" generic MTB to a fat bike, 27,5" 3.0 wide tyres. Oh, and with front damping. Still a heavy bike, but much more comfortable on bumpy roads. And now with disk brakes instead of V-brake. But I don't think it's as fast.
Just a great video. You're photography and editing skills are awesome.
I appreciate it!
YEAH BUDDY! It was great to finally meet and ride with you on this day! Great edit and those drone shots were EPIC! Can't wait to ride with again hopefully soon!
Likewise man, first of many rides! 🤙
Hey Rob, I live up here - shoot me a message if you want to ride the Traverse again from East to West this summer or fall. I can help shuttle a return vehicle from Mission to Lester unless you want the ultimate loop - to which I’d say we can ride back on Will Munger, Cross City, and finally the Lakewalk. ✌️
Cool man, will do!
Great to see you two collab! Favorite trail system in Minnesota at Piedmont, gnarliest MN trails you can ride without signing a waiver IMO. Duluth has the scenery, those drone shots turned out epic!
Thanks Andrew, it was another fun day on the bike, Piedmont never disappoints.
Well done.
Thanks!
Really nice edit! The Canal Park footage was a nice touch. I'm loving all the content coming out of Minnesota. The Piedmont system has really grown since I last rode there.
Appreciate it! Piedmont is great, definitely a harder trail system overall, with some grinding tech and steep downhill slabby trails.
Great video, Rob! You can never have enough videos of Piedmont. Piedmont’s trails always seem to ride a bit differently every time you ride them. It keeps things fresh. Keep up the great riding, man. 🏆😎🤙
Thanks Randy!! DM is always different because it kicks me around every which way! 😂
@@robonbikes 🤣
YEAH! Intro/Outro are awesome!! Sweet you got back up there to bang through the hard stuff again, plus got to ride with Evan, Sweet! I made a last minute trip one weekend but got rained out and only pine valley was open...
Thanks dude! Bummer you got rained out, but yeah I hear Pine Valley never closes! Great to always have that option.
Minnesota has some talented content creators, very cool team up.
It’s great to have so many videos of pretty much any trail system in Minnesota. Makes scouting out potential rides pretty darn easy.
Awesome edit! Love the drone footage!
Thank you!
Rowdy Rob the Wildcat! Another great video of my home track! Awesome that you and Evan could meet up! Yeah, that step up on Mejumpolis requires mucho speed to clear! I love that you leave the bike tip in! Lol! Nice work bro!🤙
Let’s do Wildcat again! Thanks Andrew, it was great to ride these somewhat quickly after you and Randy towed me in for the first time - helps to ingrain the lines in the ol’ noggin!

@@robonbikes sure…..
Just got back from cyuna. Did the Backcountry loop. Pushed my skills a little. I don't care for rocks for the sake of rocks. Every time i got moving another pile of rocks! No thanks. I did stand at the entrance to sledgehammer and debated, glade i chose not to. I don't think id be ok 😮
The backcountry trail is notorious (and in my mind super annoying) in that there are rocks placed on all the tight turns, between narrow trees. It’s a really odd build, like the builders were saying “Heh heh, this’ll get ‘em!” 😂
@@robonbikes exactly. We we three amateur riders and one of us who shall remain nameless had to walk most rock piles. Still had a good time.
Love it! We need more comedians in the sport.
Ha ha thanks!
great video ! Do you have any chin mount to recommend ?
It really depends what kind of helmet you’re using. I have a POC Otocon, and I think my mount is made by a company called r3pro, they basically just 3D print it. It has 3M adhesive and a zip tie. Sounds janky but it’s solid.
My back yard. Im 5 minutes away. I like the flow. Twenty six miles of trails is nothing to sneeze at. Monty Python took me awhile to master. Otb face plant 😮.
Oh no, face plant off of Monty Python doesn’t sound fun at all…😬 I’d imagine you had to talk yourself back onto that the next time around!
Absolutely. And a smaller bike. Biggest change was my wife made me promise not to do stuff like that again without someone there to end my suffering. She cares about me 😜
It’s good to have someone who cares 😂
Is MTBAA free to attend? Spent all my money on bike parts, lift tickets and craft IPA’s…😂 Pretty sure I’ve met one or two of these “Rob’s” out on the trails before! Also nice job editing and synching everything up, lots of work done in the editor!
You sound like an ideal candidate! 🤣. Thanks Andrew!
😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks man!
How do I find my local chapter?
Haha seriously! 😂
What are your GoPro settings? Always seems when I ride the footage looks like I’m 1/2 the speed I’m going(sad violin haha). Do you use the Max lens mod?
I do use the max lens mod. A little wider POV and it locks the horizon. You could check the film speed, if you’re at 60 fps, I think some applications might play it back at half speed.
lil Rockgarden & longtravelbike LOL
Great names! 😂
Shouldn't they all be wearing GoPro's?
Live in Monticello and love this trail. I always LOL at people who say it's "too far". Literally 15 min from Maple Grove.
Cool stuff at these trails!
People who live "in the city" think anything ten minutes away is a long way. I used to live in Big Lake and that was an eternity for people in the city...now I live 30 minutes from Sioux Falls and I may as well be in Minneapolis for how far people think I am from there...ridiculous.
This is Giving Letterkenny vibes.. and I’m loving it
Great show!!
You are awesome. Beethoven would be honored. Great use of Moonlight Sonata!
Ha ha thank you!
Awesome
Thank you!
Brilliant!! Well done.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Ohhh Gawd. This was epic😂! Lol!!!
Thanks buddy!
This video is golden, brother! We laughed so hard. Cool idea, well done.
Thanks Randy! It’s a fun one!
A-W-E-S-O-M-E

Do studded tires have a negative effect when its NOT icy?
They add a little weight, and if you’re planning to ride on any pavement, they sure are noisy.
2:22 "how fat do I want this tiers" I don't know why but I can stop laughing
😂
I’d agree with your thoughts at the end. The big rock double works but it’s pretty tight coming into it. Probably a smart move to bypass it being by yourself. Another well done video buddy
Thanks man! Yeah I’m happy I skipped that one, have heard other people say it’s not the easiest to clear. Still can be deflating to walk away from a feature like that 😂
Yeah Buddy! Nice to check this one off your list! Knowing your riding ability but still pushing it a bit! Well done! Now back your regularly scheduled Cuyuna riding......
Thanks man! Haha, exactly, bring on Sand Hog and Bobsled!!!
I just met a guy from La Crosse who mentioned these trails, now I have to figure out when I can make the trip.
Yeah they’re worth a drive for a solid day of riding. Beautiful area too!
Congrats on checking this one off your list. Haven't been out there in a while. The camera angles are worth the big bites. Hope you didn't get any ticks.
Thanks Brian! Good to hear those camera shots paid off! Ended up with about a dozen wood ticks 😳. Trail was super overgrown in spots; so much rain this season the trail trimmers have their work cut out for them!
Great vid Rob, really tied the reality of this trail together. You knocked off some big moves in there as well! For some this will be a one and done.
Thanks! Yeah, definitely some fun features, but I really prefer the Yawkey and Mahnomen South trails, they just flow together so nicely.
I rode all of sledgehammer a few weeks ago when I was there, I really love the trail. I enjoy riding big features although I will say that it was hard to get enough speed for the last gap jump as the corner before it was slippery when I was there. Nice video!
Nice work hitting everything there! There are some big drops on this trail, not to mention that rock gap.
Still haven't ridden Sledgehammer and the Backcountry trails at Cuyuna but I agreed 100% with your take on Bison Run and Dynamite in your video there, if I ever ride this I'll probably feel the same. Too much artificial chunk that drains your speed for no reason, killed the vibe for me on Cruser's Kettle as well. Good job knowing your limits while riding alone in an isolated part of Cuyuna, I'm sure that rock gap has broken several bikes and bones the bike shop warned you about!
There are some fun trail features on Sledgehammer, and even a flow spot or two, but overall it just felt like an attempt to make huge trail features, without considering how the trail would run as a whole. A place to session features, instead of a vision for an entire trail, like Bobsled.
Cuyuna has a weird building style. I remember some gaps on some other trails that just were so poorly thought out. No speed for it. Always thankful people are out there digging but Cuyuna seems to have more than its fair share of weird moves that don’t work. I think some of the worst sections were done by paid builders too 🤷♂️
The newer builds out at Cuyuna have awkward sections. Hard to define but they just don’t work, or feel natural. I think Dynamite on the Sagamore Unit is a prime example. I do love the classics though - Mahnomen South and Yawkey!
Great riding, Rob! Good, honest review of Sledgehammer. It’s really hard for me to pass on any feature, but sometimes you just have to try them another day.
Well said Randy, I’m the same way, hate passing but know it’s the right move in some situations! As always thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! 🤘👊
Nice riding Rob! I have a hot take on the build of this trail and Bison Run...Garbage, some things work but most things don't...
Thanks man! Overall I’m a big fan of Cuyuna, but yeah, some of the newer builds are head scratchers.
Someone had to say it
