Lol, I read cute instead of iconic, and I was like, lol, I think Pyramid Head is super sexy, and then I saw that it said iconic... oh well, not the same mind then.
I remember I rewatched this movie several times, I just love it. The history behind, and as in the games, I got really scared when the sirens started. Watching this movie felt like you where in Silent Hill.
Adaption wise it's pretty terrible. But as a fan film with a big budget. It's pretty fun. I appreciate it. If just a few things were changed I would genuinely love this movie in all it has to offer. What disappoints me is that it's so close to being a genuinely decent adaption, but JUST misses the mark. It's not great by any means. But definitely is fun when looked at what it is... A fan film with a budget.
I agree. Yes, there were changes that in retrospect I wish hadn't been made regarding Pyramid Head in relation to the second, but it did a great job in representing the nature of the game. Much better than the sequel. I personally enjoy the sequel for fun, but it was missing a lot of psychological horror aspects.
As someone who played 2,3, and a big chunk of 4 I think it does justice to the franchise. The real-time effects of the world changing to the Silent Hill one are awesome to this day. I really like this movie :)
@@joowonmo6800 Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games ever! Pyramid Head is pretty a case study in himself. What I was saying was how the second movie (I only said the second, didn't specify) explained Pyramid Head don't as Alessa's gaurdian rather than a manifestation of James Sunderland's pysche. I can still enjoy the second movie, but I just thought the movie did a better job at least having a fan service without verbally changing the story if you know what I mean.
I loved this movie so much when I was younger that I watched it every week. I'm surprised people don't get why things are happening in the film, that's the first time I heard of it.
I feel like no one talks about the visuals in this movie, seeing the environments peel back and reveal the rustic otherworld when the sirens Blair, and then the walls slowly start rebuilding again when the characters are back to the normal world. The way the other world is very dull and grey when in silent hill and another shot set outside of the town pops with colour, the contrast is absolutely stunning.
I love this movie. Saw it back in college in the theatre. Atmospheric, mood, music, tension and performances all excellent. Production design is great. You really feel the town of Silent Hill, it draws you in. It’s creepy and disturbing, with a chilling ending. The pyramid head sequences are done so well. Definitely my favorite video game adaptation and I think it’s very underrated. We need more adaptations like this.
My favorite part is the camera angles used when the town changes for the first time. That too me screamed silent hill. The Husband aspect was definitely the weak point, but I gotta give it a pass. They didnt kill off Sean Bean. I was watching this movie wondering when he would die. He didn't. I has happy.
They actually replicated some of the camera angles from the videogame 1:1. It's great. I also love the scene where the sirene goes off the first time and you realize "shit, it's gonna happen" and the camera pans down into darkness and suddenly she is in this other world. Love it.
It took being in a horror movie for Sean Bean to live. It's like when you multiply a negative by a negative. The guy who always dies in the town that kills everyone? Of course he makes it.

This movie has one of the most depressing endings of all time. (Spoilers) You fight off the all the horrors of hell, save your daughter, escape from this horrible town, and finally make your way home... only to find that no one is there... and that it’s not the same. It’s a foggy nightmare dream version of your home... and then you realize you never really escaped to begin with.
Great idea for the movie, but still, that's not how Silent Hill works. That only happens in the town, because it was built on top of a Native burial ground, where the Natives previously lived and prayed, as they always felt the area had a strong spiritual presence. Then that presence turned evil, as more tragedies occurred and as the Colonists started a Cult for worshipping, well, evil.
@@AtticussAtticuss I didn't need to be explained. It needed to follow the rules set by the game's universe. Otherwise the film could've been called something else.

YES!! The scene where she tells her not to open her eyes. The shot showing just the bad version looking into the daughters eyes haunted me for years as a child, I was afraid that when I opened my eyes she would be there in my face waiting for me to look.

I thought it was bad. Bad movie but it also utterly destroys the lore of silent hill which is frustrating. Pyramid Head, sexy nurse, and the armless creature actually meant something before they became just iconic fan service. They have no place in Alessia’s otherworld. It’s fun if you turn your brain off or are not super knowledge about the Silent Hill games.
I love this film. I watched it for the first time when I was like 13 and I must have watched 20 times. I had never played the game when I first saw it and it made perfect sense to me. Granted, it's far from perfect. Like you said, the husband storyline feels tacked on. The CGI doesn't really hold up and some of the acting from the townspeople is really over the top (and child actress who plays Sharon/Alessa also isn't very good in places). However, I would still say that this is the best video game adaption ever made. The set design, the art direction, the soundtrack, the leads - it's all great stuff.
Silent Hill really is a good movie, and a damn good horror movie at that. I remember loving it many years back, but even rewatching it today, it has so many genuinely strong qualities. The acting, effects, scares, set design, and atmosphere are all so well done.
I'm still pissed about what happened. Konami fucked the franchise in so many ways, but their cancellation of Silent Hills and removal of PT was the final straw.
I think that Chris will eventually do that. Honestly, that film was so bad, I remember having so much high hopes for it after the first film and SHR literally ignores it down to the ending. It reminded me of how Halloween 4 & Friday the 13th: A New Beginning had a crazy mindfuck of an ending and the sequels just ignore it. Sean Bean & Radha Mitchell were the only good things about that sequel IMHO and they had limited screentime in it. It could've been so much better than it was. It's a shame too, because it had a solid cast of actors. I noticed that Frailty DVD behind Chris, so I hope Chris reviews that because that is another very underrated film too. Paxton was amazing in that. RIP

I watched this movie alone back in 2012 out of sheer curiosity. The moment that soundtrack started playing I was immediately swept away into the story. Such a unique sound that creates an atmosphere that is as beautiful as it is frightening. To this day I listen to the soundtrack while at work and it's amazing how it seems to help me calm down and focus. The moment I turn it on I am sort of pulled from the stress I feel in a given moment and am truly taken somewhere.
@@harryosborne8215 ....according to that logic, all of the principle actors in "Temple of Doom" were literally being held over a pit of lava. Movie magic, man. And this movie doesn't even do that very well.
I loved this movie, so did my sister. Fun fact, one of the screenwriters for this was Oscar winner Roger Avary, who won an Oscar along with Quentin Tarantino for Pulp Fiction. There was an interview where he went into this movie acknowledging the bad rep video game movies got, courtesy of Uwe Boll, wanting to change that. I also like the fact that the only music in this movie that is not from Akira Yamaoka is just after the first point when Silent Hill changes back to "normal", and yet it is still fitting. Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. The fact that they really wanted to do a lot of practical effects is a plus, and on top of that I like that they even chose to emulate some of the camera angles in the game, like when the camera is tracking Radha Mitchell character from up in the corner, looking down at her and sort of tracking in this deliberately jarring V shape. Coincidentally, as much as I love the game, I kind of sucked at it. I missed a ton of shit, and ended up with the ending where your character is dead in his car after the crash. Same goes for Silent Hill 2. On a side note, and I know I'm going to be annoying for doing this AGAIN, but have you seen Exorcist III, aka Exorcist Legion? If you haven't, you should give it a look. I would argue it is better than Exorcist: Heretic, and easily better than Exorcist in the Beginning (the final exorcism and that movie looks like something out of an old Raimi film). But more than that, it is a fine companion piece to the original movie. Less of a horror movie and more of a thriller, it still has some disturbing elements, solid ties to the original (courtesy of the fact that William Peter Blatty, who wrote and adapted the screenplay for original also did the same for Legion as well as directing it), and it actually has one of the best jump-scare scenes I have ever seen in terms of its effect on me. The movie features Brad Dourif in probably one of his best roles, and fantastic acting from Ed Flanders and George C. Scott, who play two characters who have become friends over their connection to Father Damien Karras in the original. if anyone is interested in watching this, I do believe it is on Amazon Prime right now.
Never thought you'd review this one. I used to love this movie, defended it anytime that it came up in conversation. But as a I grew older and became a passionate fan of the games, I kinda soured on it. While I applaud and appreciate Christophe Gans's love for the game and his desire to create something good, also the inclusion of Akira Yamaoka's score is just amazing, his representation of it was very flawed. The excessive need for slasher movie gore is definitely not needed. The game had blood and bodies all over the place but they were carefully placed and already been there before you even entered the area. There was really no need for that much gore. I will always argue that it's snow, not ash lol. I don't like Christophe where he practically says, and I'm paraphrasing, a father wouldn't go through hell to find and save his daughter. That is an absolute dick punch to any great fathers out there. Harry Mason is a great character for his resilience, he's a good man with good qualities and the love that he has for his daughter, he's a great character. While I also respect the attention to detail on certain things, a few of the monsters shouldn't be in the movie. I get that it was fan service and in adaptations you have to make some changes. But those changes shouldn't disregard the source material. The Lying Figure monster was a manifestation of James's internal suffering, a patient in agony like his wife was. She referred to herself as a monster. The nurses were a manifestation of James's sexual deprivation. And most importantly, Pyramid Head's portrayal. Pyramid Head was a manifestation of James's guilt and desire to be punished after what he did. Those three monsters have a reason for their appearances, in the movie, their appearances are not right. This movie could've an entirely new Silent Hill, canon to the storyline, the feminine feel of the female cast would be perfect in its own story but it had to be an adaptation. While I will always agree that a mother's love for her child is one of the most purest things in this world, so is the love of a father. It is just as special. And for Harry to be just thrown out and forgotten and replaced with a character that could easily lead her own story, it's just kinda disrespectful to the source material. At least I think it is. The things I just wrote can be argued to say that the Lying Figure can be from Alessa and her agony from being burned and the stuff that is squirts out is acidic pus and blood from the wounds that she suffers. Pyramid Head being there to punish the guilty ones who burned her. But it can be countered again by saying that new designs can be created and become homages to those monsters. I'm not very good at trying to explain my opinions, by I get by in any way I can. I'm not saying this review is wrong or anyone liking this movie is wrong, I'm just voicing my opinion and criticism of the movie. I respect the review and I respect the opinions of the liking of this movie. I'm sure that there are better people that can explain what I mean better than me lol.
This comment pretty much mirrors my mixed feelings about the film. I also agree with you about Harry being replaced and how Rose's character would have been excellent had they tweaked the script more and really made her her own, as opposed to a Harry-Heather Mason hybrib. Like you, I think an all female cast really could have worked in a stand alone adaptation of the games, brought it's own uniqueness and canon to the series, but it decided to cram as much as it could into its runtime. Changing Dahlia's character from ambitious, abusive cult leader to grief stricken mother hellbent on revenge was a brilliant change, imo, and it showed some of the untapped potential that they could have harness by creating a completely distinct story within the SH universe. I mentioned in another comment how the film suffers pacing issues, and that for me is it's biggest problem. There's just too much in this movie. Too many people, too many monsters, too much gore, too much action, too much exposition. Gans should have taken inspiration from some of the films that inspired the games (Jacob's Ladder, Angel Heart, The Shining and Twin Peaks) and allowed the viewer to linger in the atmosphere and ambience, as opposed to horrific scene after horrific scene broken up by exposition dumps to explain everything we just saw. That said, as far as videogame adaptations go, Gans' vision is definitely a stand-out amongst a sea of shit. The care he put into the aesthetic is worthy of praise- the film is visually very striking - I just wished the same care was given to the screenplay.
This movie scared the crap out of me when I first watched it. I was about 15 and watched it alone in the dark. I never played the game before I watched it.
I may be one of the few people that actually played the game after seeing the movie. I very much liked it at first and later loved the movie after playing the game. ⚡
I really liked the husband scenes : it gives emotional contrasts, where we want to go back to the safety of reality some times, and we really hope they will be reunited due to that character development.
As someone who's never played silent hill, I really loved this movie when I first saw it. It made me a silent hill fan even though I've never played the game :)
@ichaelis Have to disagree there. The "mother is god" theme was not a part of the games at all, so putting it in and changing things to suit it was a bad move for an adaptation. I've played every SH game as well, and this doesn't work as anything but a visual homage. It looks the part, but butchered Alessa and Dahlia's characters, misuses creatures from the wrong game, gets parts of lore wrong or arbitrarily changes it, and dumbs it down for the sake of the general audience when a good writer could spend the exposition dump scenes and Sean Bean screen time actually doing some proper world-building. Example: The cult worships a god who is said to return one day to complete the unfinished task of creating paradise for her followers. A sect of the cult that Dahlia belongs to wishes to usher in her return, and Dahlia offers up her own daughter because of her psychic abilities that made her an outcast among her peers, believing her to be chosen for the purpose. The ritual goes awry, setting off a boiler explosion in Dahlia's basement, burning Alessa, but succeeds in impregnating her nonetheless. She sacrifices half her soul to prevent god from being born, creating the infant who was found and adopted by the Masons and given the name Cheryl. Dahlia uses a spell to prevent Alessa from dying, the unborn god inside her trapping her in an unending nightmare of never dying, nor healing until Cheryl is called back to Silent Hill where she begins the process of spreading the Seal of Metatron (or Metraton depending on which spelling you like) to try to seal the town off from the rest of the world, giving her own life so that others won't have to suffer at the hands of a wrathful deity. But in the process, she inadvertently spreads her other half's nightmarish hallucinations because of the town's spiritual power, creating the Otherworld that periodically manifests along Harry's journey. If I can sum it up in a paragraph, a good writer can do proper world-building with 30-45 minutes of screen time. And it does the one thing no adaptation should: it harms the perception of the source material. Too much misinformation has been spread because of this movie, and people now think this is what the games were. This version of Pyramid Head even showed up in Homecoming where he didn't belong. The film was well-made and well acted (for the most part), but it's not a good adaptation.
@@StCerberusEngel i must disagree with your assessment, my friend. I found many of its changes welcome, for instance, getting rid of Harry wasn't a bad move considering he was easily the blandest protagonist in the series. And in the original game Dahlia is simply evil for the sake of evil, so I don't see how making her a more tragic and sympathetic figure ruins her character, if anything it makes her better. I'd also have to disagree about the cult and the lore. Out of all the things in the series, the cult lore is easily the weakest and most convoluted aspect of the series, hence why Silent Hill 2, which has little to nothing to do with the cult, is considered the best in the series. The movie cuts out the fat and focuses on the main thing that was appealing about silent hill: its a story about a parent going through a nightmare world for the saje of their child.
@@d-skullgaming696 If you find Harry too bland, look at Shattered Memories. A film could give him more personality in a similar way. Also, he's a determined dad looking through hell for his missing child and won't stop until he finds her. I don't find anything bland about that. Christabella is evil for the sake of evil. They replaced offering her own child to birth their god for her twisted religion and sense of self-righteousness with "burn the witch because we're puritans". They replaced Dahlia with a doppelganger, and gave her a much less interesting motivation. As for the cult's motives, I explained precisely what went on in SH1 in a paragraph. I don't know what you think is so convoluted about it. The first game had some translation problems, but the third did a great job of clarifying that and delving deeper into Alessa's backstory. If you're still confused, I don't know what to tell you. Taste is taste, but the games did a much better job at what they set out to do than the movie did.
@ichaelis I wasn't saying you were saying it was from the games, I was simply saying that putting your own message in something where it previously wasn't, and then changing things to fit that theme is a bad move for an adaptation. You're supposed to adapt the source material, not change the source material for your own purpose. As I've already demonstrated, you can sum up the mythos in a paragraph. So yes, a movie can explore it in 2 hours. The movie wastes time as it is by repeating itself (Sean Bean's segments were useless) and literally having characters give exposition dumps to the audience. Yes, Gans' changes fit the theme he wanted to explore...but that theme was out of place for an adaptation of an existing story. The thing is, he could have given us an entirely new story, with new characters and new creatures for Silent Hill. The source material allows for that and he probably should have just done so. After all, isn't that what people want from Silent Hill; new interesting characters and stories? Like it if you want, but I found this movie severely lacking in all but its presentation.
You are not. I liked it from start to finish. And I never played a Silent Hill game. So I just had a vague idea of what was coming from hearsay. When the mother entered Silent Hill and things went down Creepy Twisted Lane, I was invested. And all of my friends who were with me liked it to. Good movie. Sad that the second one couldn't live up to this one.

The cynic in me wants to say your all just the minority clinging onto a positive review for validation.... but the reasonable person in me also understands that's not fair. I agree. Yes, there were changes that in retrospect I wish hadn't been made regarding Pyramid Head in relation to the second, but it did a great job in representing the nature of the game. Much better than the sequel. I personally enjoy the sequel for fun, but it was missing a lot of psychological horror aspects.

@@joowonmo6800 Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games ever! Pyramid Head is pretty a case study in himself.

Str8EdgeGamer I agree with a lot of your points. Not all of them, but still. An opinion well delivered.

Sean Bean Doesn't Die.

Am i the only one who really like this movie?

You are not. I liked it from start to finish. And I never played a Silent Hill game. So I just had a vague idea of what was coming from hearsay. Sad that the second one couldn't live up to this one.
I love it, and I have never played the game
Based on the comments on this video I'm actually starting to think I'm the only one in the world who HATES this movie, especially as a fan of the first three games. The cynic in me wants to say your all just the minority clinging onto a positive review for validation.... but the reasonable person in me also understands that's not fair. I'd really like to know why people actually like this movie though. Are you people who have never played the games, so that has no baring on your opinion? Or have you played the games, and still like the movie in spite of that? If so why? I'm actually curious.
I watched it when I was in college with my sister and friend (he explained that it was a game adaptation). As someone who hadn't played the game, I was really invested and spooked by this movie. I could clearly see how it was a game, but that really worked for the movie.
I liked the characters, the atmosphere was intense and I didn't mind the husband character, as well. Favorite character of the movie was the cop (sobs). I felt that the movie was clear, especially with the exposition flashbacks. Overall really enjoyed it and it was a fun, intense time.
When this movie came out I was like 11 and still wasn’t into horror movies. The trailers for this movie alone scared me so bad that I either had to leave the room or change the channel when they came on. I watched it for the first time when I was 15 and was horrified out of my mind but loved it immediately!
Silent Hill: Shattered memories and Dead Space 2 are some of my all time favorite games.
Dead space 2 is art and to go one step further, a masterpiece. One of the greatest games ever
When you got to go back on the ship that was the scariest part I think lol
I would love to see a Dead Space movie, though I'm not sure if Hollywood could even make a good one...
Considering that they fucked up DOOM twice, Hitman twice as well, and several times with Resident Evil
Dead space is better than 2
@Z390 evil within 2 is pretty shit
Quite honestly, I have loved this movie since I was a kid. To this day, it’s so much fun to watch
*The first game was so scary, I made a silent hill in my diaper.*
God damnit i can still remember the school with the cages hanging from the ceiling and corpses nailed to the wall ...
At least it was silent?
I remember the car stuck in the locker. It made me so sad and uncomfortable. I just wanted to help the kitty because who wouldn’t? No saving it which made me more sad
Silent Hill 4 is my favorite
@@faisalhasan5414 me too. The atmosphere in that game was amazing
I loved the creatures in this movie🙋🏾♀️
I had no idea this was based on a video game when I saw it. I thought it was really unique and creative and creepy and I LOVED it! I am a massive horror fan and I had never seen anything quite like this before.
I remember playing silent hill 2 start to finish over a weekend I was alone in my apartment, it was a strange weekend as there seemed to be nobody else in the entire apartment building, really added to the creepy atmosphere of the game. As for the film it has it's flaws but a great film to sit down and experience, lights off and big screen.
Silent hill is one of my favorite movies of all time! So creepy!
What is creepy about it?
ReddFoxx1562 the imagery, the story, the music, everything that happens in it
This has always been one of my favorite horror movies! When ever some one says “I wanna watch something spooky” it’s on my go to list. I care so much about these characters.
I really liked this one. I remember walking out of the theater and saying “shit, she got the bad ending”.
I know right. I was wondering if that was the true ending.
I thought the true ending was the review that the whole game was being controlled by a dog?
It’s one of my favorite horror movies
OUCH
Husband part was important because of the very ending. Otherwise it wasn't be as such sad as it was. If you know what I mean. One of the best horror thriller film in my life.
Honestly, I really like this movie, maybe its because I love the silent hill games...
I actually really liked the first one the whole time, second one tho is so forgettable
I saw Silent Hill in theaters with my cousins and I always felt like the movie played out like the progression of a storyline video game. Unlocking secrets. Finding objects to get to objectives. Challenges spawning at "random." I felt like watching a video game in a lot of ways for me. One thing I especially enjoyed was the visual representation of the mental state of the people. I need to rewatch this movie. Some impressive storytelling goes on in this movie. I enjoyed it and honestly, I really want to buy a Silent Hill collection to play all the games.
This one of of the movies I loved to watch growing up and I still like it. The overall eerie feeling, score, and the visuals of the movie are awesome.
*- Pyramid Heard:* _"Now I am tortured by pachinkos as my Silent Hill... Should have cut some slack to James."_
So sad, but very very true
So should we call him pachinko head now
@@thelastbro1710 Or start a career as a personal trainer for Konami's gyms, guy's jacked enough. And the rest of the unemployed beastiary would even make the laziest chub run cardios like a marathon... *BAM! EVERYONE WINS!*
@NINJAotogi I know, right? By sharing the warmth and good memories between other strangers with something we share in common inside the fandom.
I went to a screening at the film school in my city when this came out. Christophe was there and did a Q&A afterwards. I really didn't like the movie, and I didnt say anything about it to him, but after rewatching it's become my go-to for a late night watch. I love it and it is MASSIVELY underrated. Glad Chris feels the same
2:19, too bad Konami doesn’t.
It's so sad, silent hill is my favourite series, there's not one day that goes by where I don't think about a new game
I feel you, I love the first 3, so good, especially 2. I never got the chance to play P.T. Because Konami decided they want to kill every franchise they own. I hope something happens that will change this.
But hey! You can play a new sh on a slot machine!
srai12snake yeah, it’s the future of pay-ahem.....play.
@@lukag5478 The closest thing we can really wish for is for the original team to break away and do a spiritual successor of their own, like Bloodstained.
This is one of my more favorite movies to watch during Halloween.
The part that stuck with me the most in this film was when Alessa's mother points up to Pyramid Head before he rips off Anna's skin. She did it in such a specific way that it would always pop in my head randomly.
I really enjoyed this movie. I saw it when I was relatively young.
That is an excellent way to praise it.
Loved this movie since I was a kid. It actually got me into the games when I was younger and has become one of my favorite game series.
This one, unlike the sequel, had tension and mystery throughout the film, I liked it back then & still do. Also the fact they used real props for monsters made it so much better than CGI could ever do!
I even love the end credits, they gave that song such a dark spin!
The second movie deserves a Hilariocity.
It isn't that bad as people say. It was only more gamey.
@@TheRezro I remember it being acted and edited quite poorly.
@@Kharr True. But I see far worst movies then that one. It get too much hate.
I've never played a Silent Hill game in my life, and this is one of my favorite horror movies. It just goes to show that it actually works (perhaps even works BETTER, given its reputation amongst the game's fans) without prior knowledge of the source material.
Watched it last week.
One of my favorite actually
Do you have any proof
Do you have any taste
@@deoranjed8118 I've researched a lot about this film. I'm listening to the soundtrack right now. Akira Yamaoka is really good to be honest. Also Roger Avery was in jail because of an accident. He made a new film which will come out in a couple of months. I love the symbolism and atmosphere of the film
@@justanothergeek1151 that's enough proof thank you😁
@@justanothergeek1151 Yamaoka wrote the music for the games, not this piece of shit movie.
Love this movie. Watched it home alone during my teen years. Still freaks me out.
What I *love* is that actors and dancers played the monsters--and with such glee! I like this so much better than CGI. I love the subtle changes to the colour of Mitchell's costume, and I love the lovingly crafted sets.
Not sure why critics bashed it. I loved this film and would consider putting it amongst my favorite horror movies.
Never had a craving to watch this movie but I definitely have one now.
I respect this movie, because they at least tried.
The soundtrack made this movie. So chilling and desolate
