Well spotted! A triangle is often used as the sign for the Trinity “father, son, and Holy Spirit“. The inverted triangles seemed like symbols of the unholy trinity. Devil, long legs and the unholy spirit that possessed.
The scene where he just walks around Lees house while she’s outside was so effective yet so simple. It makes you afraid a weirdo like Longlegs is stalking you
The thing I found most bizarre is that Carter’s own daughter/family perfectly fits the pattern (e.g her being 9 and her birthday being the 14th) and he NEVER mentions this or puts it together. Wouldn’t an investigating officer find this a bit worrying or at least notice this coincidence?
I think the Carter family was under the dolls influence from the start, the family's introduction to the birthday party with no other children there was bizarre in hindsight.
I thought exactly this. Surely he would've realised that his daughter fits the pattern early on? As soon as the pattern with the birthdays was mentioned I knew that was where the movie was ending. A lot of the story felt forced or incredibly predictable like this for me, outside of the murder dolls and satanic nuns.
i guess it's just denial from carter... i believe he could see the pattern when harker informed him about the victim's birthdate, but he's "too scared" to admit that.. when longleg's dead, it's a relief for him when he said it's over, even when harker informed him there's probability of accomplice... about no kid in ruby's party, probably after harker's mother came, carter told the party was cancelled to ruby's friends... remember when harker got a strange call that told her, she's already late for ruby's party? it meant it's been hours when she arrived at carter's house... but her mother still stayed because she had to watch the slaughter...

Emma, great video! I had a bit of an epiphany when I got home from this movie. In the theater, I was annoyed during the scene where Longlegs comes to Harker's house out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, and while pursuing him outside, she sees that he's actually in her house. Then cut to her sitting calm as a cucumber with her back to the room opening the birthday card. I thought "this is ridiculous" - she just had an adrenaline rush from hell, never saw him leave, doesn't know where he is, and she's calmly sitting in the dark house doing paperwork?! ... But then, after I got home, I realized that during this time, she was still under the sway of the doll (brain ball) at her mother's house. So, in the same way as LL lived in her childhood home and she was blocked from consciously perceiving this, she simply had no recollection (even in the moment) of seeing LL in her house in the woods. So, when she came back inside, she simply found the card and started examining it and may not have even remembered hearing noises or going outside in the moments before. Granted, you'd still be freaked out, but not "the murderer is in my house" freaked out. If this is all correct, then what I thought was a ridiculous character action actually makes perfect sense in the larger plot. Just wanted to share in case anyone else had the same thought.
That's brilliant! I thought the same thing last night when I saw the movie! How is she just sitting down while there's likely a killer in her house?! And that theory never occurred to me but makes perfect sense! Bravo!
This scene could have easily been tweaked. The audience sees him over her shoulder and just as she turns around LL disappears out of sight. Or maybe that is what happened??
I also thought it was weird that she just decided to sit down and investigate the card, but I kinda just brushed it off thinking "maybe she knows he's already gone, cause why would he leave her a card to then kill her"
I'm glad she made a cameo in this movie of Oz's since she was the lead in his very first feature move called Blackcoat's daughter..... She was extraordinary and creepy in that role! Good actress!
10:50 I also figured that since she had been catatonic since her family was killed, that she likely still had the mental development of a child in a lot of ways, so she would still speak like a little kid despite her body being so much older.
My favorite shot is when it holds on Lee talking with her mother, and you can make out the background just enough to catch something moving...but nothing happens. The anticipation of waiting for someone or something to creep up was anxiety inducing. I didn't love nor hate the story, but the atmosphere was perfect.
My favorite scene as well. It was done so well because i feel like everyone will fill that empty space with whatever terrifies them most. It's so subtly done too like she is talking to her mom, why am i so uneasy? And then i noticed that space growing, brrrrr.
The scariest part to me was the girl behind the hardware store counter acting so nonchalant about Longlegs purchasing some items like it’s happened many times before. Makes you wonder who’s out there, who we regularly interact with and who could be a serial killer. Scary. 💀🔥🎥
The shots of the Devil under the black vail creeped me out so much 🫣 I definitely liked that visual of the devil, way more than the horns and snakes like you said
I didn’t find this film all that scary when I saw it at the cinema. Then I got home to my empty house where I live alone and DAMN I was terrified lol Best film I have seen in a very long time, First Omen was my favourite of the year until this. I can’t wait to see it again when screenings will stop selling out so I can grab a ticket. Thank you for this video!

I think longlegs said he laughed when she wanted to become an investigator because how ironic somebody out there investigating the kind of crimes he’s tied to has no idea their own mother is out committing crimes and one day it might put her on the path to investigate locally what her own mother’s been up to. It is crazy she got into such a career having no idea what was going on under her own roof with her mother and this man but her job is how she came to confront the truth.
I love that Oz Perkins just straight-up admits he's fake deep sometimes. "Oh, The Blackcoat's Daughter and Longlegs are such good titles, what do they mean?" "Idk bro i thought they sounded cool"
I see it as him NOT being fake deep or pretentious. Which I admire. Like he creates a world, a vibe , a fully thought out story, and moves to next. Unlike most directors who choose styles over substance and disguise the plot holes as some deep ish that some people just “won’t understand “😂
In my view, all the children in the film were born in a special way: in a breech position. In the film, it was mentioned that the mother of a girl disliked her because she was born the wrong way around. This means that the baby was born feet first, then the body, and finally the head. The birth of a baby in a breech position can symbolize the number 9. This could explain why the children had to die at the age of nine. Additionally, when you turn 9 upside down, it becomes 6. If you add 6 to 8, you get 14. Interestingly, all these children were born on the 14th of the month. So the 13th was Lee, because she stayed alive.

I suspect they also received the letter on the 8th of the month, though this was never explicitly stated. Her mother was the 7th (since 6+7=13), with 6 representing something we all know. She never died on the 14th and remained alive.

I think the black smoke was there as visual confirmation. Because it's not just Harker's doll that gives off that smoke, but Harker herself does as well when it's shot. It's there to show you that sort of link between the two rather than just explicitly telling you. Just happy as peaches :)
As a horror fan, I think the genre is really challenging. There is so much commentary on whether a movie is scary or not, even though fear is such a personal experience. I honestly don't like this discourse because there is so much more to a horror film than just that. With Longlegs, whether the viewer was scared or not, I feel like there's no denying that it is fresh, that it is effective and that it brings to the table atmosphere, performances and cinematography we haven't seen in a while and it is a great and memorable addition to the horror genre. I personally loved it and I agree with your takes. I just really appreciate what this movie did. Also thumbs up to marketing done well!
Well said I agree it's fresh that's what should go forward to a lot of horrors because these days so many same type of horror especially ghost films and exorcist type films

It really is subjective. Some folks see 'horror' as jumpscares and loud sounds. Others see it as violence and gore. Still others believe horror lies within tension and dread, and still OTHERS believe it is a vehicle for social commentary. They're all right.

I was also thinking after I saw the film that during the scene with Carrie Anne Camera, when Carrie mentions that Harker looks familiar or that she's seen her before somewhere, it's not just in reference to their dolls but she probably saw Harker's mother lurking around the time her family was murdered when she was younger, so there is that familial recognition of Harker resembling and reminding Carrie Anne of this . Just a great little foreshadowing moment pointing to Harker's mother's involvement as well.
Yes! I saw it for the second time today and this particular dialogue just clicked this time that didn't the first time. Carrie Anne thought Lee looked familiar because her mother brought them the doll.
Best scene was when they were watching the video tape of Nicolas Cages character in the fbi room and the Nicolas Cage was talking precisely to everyone in the room directly looking at certain characters in the room without him necessarily being there physically, it gave a supernatural feel to him!
Holy crap that scene was SO creepy!!! I thought that too it seemed like he was talking to people in the room. Also I just watched it again and he appears to look directly at Agent Browning, then Harker, and that last super creepy look was right at Carter.....SO GOOD!

i felt really anxious during the movie, no matter what main character had gun or her work partner it made me feel like she is so unprotected and vulnerable, even after longlegs died...
I loved the subtle pay off of the dolls and how it connects to Lee’s not talking. We hear how Karianne (might be forgetting the name) didnt talk since her family died but then seemingly around the time they break into her “brain” she unlocks and speaks again, and then further kind of confirmed when the daughter gets the doll at the end and isn’t speaking
The interrogation scene was the first time Maika Monroe saw Nic Cage, and she didn’t know what he was going to look like. So Lee’s reaction when she walks in is genuine. They even used this in marketing, playing a recording of her actual heartbeat skyrocketing when she saw him.
great breakdown. A couple of things I'm still pondering. 1. The first mission/capture of killer/death of partner. I assume Longlegs guided her there (not truly her being psychic), but the part that is really interesting...the killer she captures. She is framed against a window of the house, even after her partner is shot. There seems ample opportunities for her to be shot at or even killed by that first killer, but instead, he sits in a room, back to her, arms raised, waiting for her. Is this killer locked into Longlegs wavelength, helping with the evil cause? 2. The hardware store/clerk scene. So, this is the only time we get Longlegs interacting with characters outside of our main story. Now this could just be a way to show his strangeness, sure, but I feel it has some deeper importance as it is such a notable interaction. 3. Adult Ruby. It has been pointed out that there is a named actor on IMDB in the role of Adult Ruby. This indicates some sort of scene was most likely shot and cut from the final version of the film. I'm intrigued.
There is some speculation about that online. You could check out the article, “Longlegs credits reveal unseen character who may change movie’s ending”. I hope she didn’t just get edited out.
I feel like they planned on actually showing that Lee decides to work for Satan instead of kill herself and Ruby but decided to cut it to make the ending more ambiguous.
I was thinking she doesn’t run out of bullets, it’s that the gun stops working; which is unusual because revolvers don’t often malfunction (so supernatural). I can’t remember if any had been fired before the house scene though, have to see again. Great vid!
This. She fired 1-2 bullets to kill Carter (her boss), & then 1 headshot to kill her mother. So she would have had at least 3 bullets left. I took it to mean the doll head some sort of evil protection over it that prevented it from conventional harm. Which for me meant that when her mother shot the doll of Lee & the magic orb/brain inside, it was part of the plan for Lee to now "remember" what had happened to her & her mom when she was 9. Also, for most of the movie I noticed she carried a semi-automatic pistol as her standard firearm. I don't remember when in the movie she switched to a revolver, or if it was just for this scene.

And yes about the firearm the only thing which I can’t remember is whether she finds the revolver in Longlegs car or somewhere, and therefore he could have not fully loaded it, in a fated way. Iv seen someone say that but I’ve only watched it once so not sure. But I think either way the idea that the gun strangely malfunctions is the best one.
It wasn’t her fbi field weapon! She gets that gun from longlegs car ! It’s a totally different type of gun ! So maybe longlegs only left the perfect amount of ammunition in the gun ??
Saw it again last night, and like you said, I was surprised how many clues there are throughout the film to explain the ending. Maybe it's the atmosphere and imagery of it all, but this was just a movie I love watching and could see myself coming back to it again and again. I guess it made me just happy as peaches 😆

22:30 I don't believe Harker run out of ammo. Se has a revolver, at least 6 to 8 rounds depending on the brand. And she only fired 3 times, 2 against her boss and 1 to her mother. I believe that "the man downstairs" had some intervention.
That devil shadow also appears in his first film, The Blackcoat's Daughter, so I think they were establishing that this movie take place in the same universe. Excellent review!

The Director confirmed that the reason long legs looks like that is because he used to be a glam rocker and he has a lot of botched surgeries. He kept getting surgery after surgery to fix it and it kept getting worse. That’s why he uses the white paint on his face to try to cover it.
Epic video, Emma! This really enriched my understanding of the film and I'm itching to watch it again with these details in mind. This film really got under my skin like nothing else for a long while and I think it will stand up to multiple viewings.
4:10 his character seems to really like rock n roll in general too! Having a guitar in the backdrop and a lot of interesting clothes and stuff in his room lol. That scene where he screams "mommy, daddy, unmake me!!!" Gave me strong rock n roll vibes too lol
3:00 I urge you to watch some more of his movies, ones that don’t just involve the “over acting” people describe. He tries and does a lot of different techniques, which is what makes him so iconic. I would highly recommend some deep dives into him and his style; he’s like a mad scientist of acting. It’s lowkey beautiful.
My take about the appearance of the devil's silhouette is that it looks like the same devil as the one in THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER and that LONGLEGS is kind of a backdoor sequel to that film. One thing I wondered a lot about after seeing it is the amount that Longlegs is the guy played by Nic Cage and the amount that Longlegs is the devil. Longlegs The Guy says that Ruth *was given* the same choice as other people were, but did the guy give that choice or did the devil? It seemed to me that the guy played by Nic Cage was under the devil's control just like Ruth was. Another thing that I wondered about was whether that "choice" really took place: all the other families were murdered by the father in the home, but Ruth and Lee lived alone without Lee's father. So, instead of them being murdered, Longlegs and the devil moved in. (Which would also fit with the cuckoo thing?) That also fits thematically as a sequel to THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER where the premise is essentially that if you are a sad and lonely girl and you lose your dad, the devil can be your new dad.
I think the reason people are saying this film reminds them of Hereditary doesn't have anything to do with the look of the movie, the story, or even the acting. It's because it has that same creeping sense of dread. That's how I saw it anyway. This is a slow burn atmospheric horror film; as is Hereditary, The Haunting (1963), and many others..and I love them all!
In the scene when Harker talks face to face with her mom for the first time, there is a Tv playing in the background with some kind of preacher, i notice is Osgood Perkins the director.
I went to my local cinema to see it today (August 14th) they held a promo, everyone born on the 14th of any month could see it for free today, so being born on a 14th, I seized the opportunity!!

At 6:13 there is a large shadow behind her with 2 long horns and 2 ears under them, head of a goat shape. Is she really psychic or are her visions flashbacks. Long legs lived with her and her mother all that time! And he said he made it so she remembers some thing while he makes her forget others and talked about how he knew when she became an agent at 20 and what he thought. It’s weird but obviously he knew all these personal things about her specifically because he lived in the basement below her and her mother. It’s a good movie! I liked it.
Great breakdown Emma, I definitely need to watch this a second time as I did miss a few things you mentioned here. I also found Carrie Ann's scene was my favorite of the film, her monologue played on a loop in my head afterwards for a bit. I also liked how certain themes and imagery of Longlegs tied in with The Blackcoat's Daughter, which is tied as my favorite of his along with Longlegs. I think he's a very talented filmmaker for sure!
I think when you say that It was almost as long legs was speaking through Carrie anne, he was also speaking through harker like when she told her mom that she never said her prayers, the dialogue is very similar, almost a riddle like sort of speech, just as long legs speaks, so I do also agree that she had been in a fog, and controlled all these years until her orb was broken...
I remember one of the first reactions i had online to those saying there wasn't enough rewarding puzzle solving IN the movie was that sometimes evil is just evil all dressed up in pretty puzzles. When you look at the big picture, all those details were just a means to an end in the devil's game. She indeed focused too closely on the imagery. It is also sobering that evil is always happening and can't be stopped. Oz Perkins said his films were all about his family, and given what happened to both his parents, (his mother died in one of the planes that hit the towers on 9/11!), he must have this feeling of terrible insecurity in the world and you feel that in many of his films. This dreadful feeling that you can't stop what's coming. Maybe Harker chose not to reload her gun at the end because she knew it was pointless? I don't know, but it's a disturbing thought.
I rewatched The Silence of the Lambs last night, and now having seen Longlegs the biggest similarity I noticed was how in many scenes with the other FBI agents Lee is the lone woman just as Clarice is. Yes we see another female agent later in the film but she is overwhelmingly surrounded by men. I will say though this movie creeped me out big time, I rarely get scared and I was on the edge of my seat for every moment of silence.
I went and saw this movie last night at the latest showing. It was Thursday night and there were about five of us in the theater. I sat all alone and when the film ended we all walked out alone and separately. There was a quiet full moon and it was spooky! I loved it, both the night and the movie. I was anxious to hear your spoiler review after watching your spoiler free review. I love the detail and research you put into Long Legs. Splendid job. It wasn't quite what I expected. I thought we'd get a lot more of Nicholas Cage but I think we got the right amount. He was brilliant and very creepy. Definitely the stuff of nightmares. I also loved the dialogue. I especially loved Kiernan Shipka and her character. I recognized her right away and was entranced by her. And speaking of the shadow that looked a little too devilish, I found that it was a similar shadow to the one in The BlackCoat's Daughter. So I found that to simply be how Oz like to portray satan. Last thing, I didn't like how dark it was, my 57 year old eyes had a hard time seeing detail. lol. But I did like the use of the color red. And it was nice to see Blair Underwood. He looks the same as he did back in the 80's when he was the sexy lawyer on LA Law. Hahaha
I too loved this movie and totally agree about the devil shapes, the snakes, and the release of the smoke. Having grown up in the south I kept thinking the snakes were a reference to the sect of Pentecostals that handle snakes. They believe their faith will allow them to handle poisonous snakes without fear of death. I felt like that’s what the mother was doing. She was handling a snake (Longlegs and the devil himself) to keep her and her daughter safe). Very interesting to think about. Love your analysis!!!! ❤❤❤
Wow, I need to rewatch it. It turned out to be a film that had much more layers than what I was expecting and I was unable to pick up on a lot of things. This is why I believe you are the best horror reviewer on youtube!
One thing no one has mentioned was the scene where Harker finds some syringes and drugs on her mom’s kitchen. Was she using them to drug others? Herself? NOBODY has mentioned this!
Also, when she saw the triangle in the test she said: Father. and the inverted triangle is shown in Longleg's work shop. thats so creepy to me idk why. lol

I really enjoyed this movie, and even more the longer I think about it. Lol. I don’t think she ran out of bullets. I think the devil just made the gun “malfunction”, so she couldn’t shoot the doll and potentially possess Ruby since Lee’s mom released Lee’s soul (that’s what I interpreted the black smoke coming out to be) and the devil couldn’t affect her anymore. I thought it was so clever that the “man downstairs” ended up not just referring to the devil but Longlegs himself. I felt like he was the devil, and the reason he killed himself was because he was done with that “vessel” and could go into another … potentially Ruby down the road? The only thing that bugged me was you have Lee breaking down all this info for Carter about girls turning 9 on the 14th. So, why in the living hell would he not think, “OMG, my daughter turns 9 in a few days, and it’s on the 14th … and we haven’t caught Longlegs yet …” I get Lee might not think that because she barely knows Carter, and kids don’t typically have birthday parties on their actual birthday. But Agent Carter, you’re an SOB for not calling that out. 🤪 lol. Some people are saying Cage was too much, but I thought he was great and legit made my heart stop a few times because he creeped me out so much! 👀 My husband was laughing when Cage came on, so when I asked after the movie why, he said, “Because I didn’t know that was Cage till he spoke, and he deserves an f’ing award because he played that role THAT good!” Mind you, he deals with evil AND mentally ill people at work on a daily basis, so for him to say that, I think that’s saying something on how Cage played that character. Lol.
Just spitballing a theory, I think Carter was already under the influence of the doll before the movie started. The first introduction of Carter's family was a little bizarre to be honest; Carter comes home drunk, his daughters wide awake, well past her bedtime and invites Lee (a complete stranger) to her room and subsequent B-Day party, and the wife is silent and cheerful like nothing is wrong. Carter mentioned being in trouble for staying out late drinking, yet nothing comes of it when he enters the house.
Very good breakdown overall. I feel like we watched the same movie in terms of how it made you feel and react. I saw Long Legs a second time today, partly because I was tired the first time and dosed off. Today I saw it from beginning to end, no snoozing, and I enjoyed as much again. One thing I really liked was how they used sound scape over music in much of the film. It's one thing I wish they did in the first "Silent Hill" movie. Because in the Silent Hill game, the background sound was all sound scape. Which added to the creepiness of the game. As with Long Legs, the sound scape as well complimented the creepy atmosphere of the movie.

something I caught that I’m super curious to look out for on a rewatch was the television playing in Harker’s mom’s house-the audio playing in the background sounded eerily similar to the sound the silver orb made earlier in the film
The whole exposition scene with the mom really killed this movie. Even if you didn't quite understand what was happening, the scene after at Ruby's birthday hammers it home. I literally yelled "I get it" at the screen. Explaining it three times just dragged and ruined all the fear that had built up.
Another thing I didn’t understand if Harker was no longer under the influence of Longlegs by the end why didn’t she have sense to call for backup before going to her bosses house? And why does she now supposedly have to continue the devils work? She could just leave the house and just get on with her life right? I would point out that plot hole but I know it’s hard to when it just gets explained with “the devil”
@@Turgon86 The question is good. She could have told them "come to the boss's house, something gonna come up." Given her time invested in the case research, they would have listened her. The film is wonderful, but come on... don't make it look like logic-perfect just because of its good parts.

I saw LongLegs yesterday and OMG I went to see it with my Mum and she was like WTF but she actually enjoyed it too, I have not stopped thinking about this movie, just brilliant....Alicia Witt was a real stand up surprise for me loved her in this what a performance and OMG the Carrie Ann scene is one of my favourite in the movie just brilliant
first of all interesting analysis and groove review but keeping that in mind there are few things that where wrong and to correct you or clear: 1. The one that talks in the phone at the end to remains her to go to the birthday is not Longlegs, it is the devil itself. 2. She doesn’t go out of bullets, the point is that she had bullets but the gun didn’t shut, is like the devil won and is not letting her kill the doll just his boss and her mother, even if she shot the girl after the gun would have make another shot but anytime she did try to shot the doll it won’t go off, thats one of the analogies in the film. Actually if you count the shots, she only shot 3 bullets in total, two for her boss and one for her mother, she had a revolver which means she had 6 shots and 6 bullets minimum, that’s why she tries to shut again but one more time the gun didn’t go off, so it’s a message of evil wining and the devil having much power to the point that only he can decide when the doll can be destroy or that you have to pay with you blood and mind like her mom did with all the death the help to acomplish to be available to destroy her daughter’s doll and free her from the spell like at the end. This actually means that now the o my one that will be over the spell and will continue the work of the devil will be the little girl (Ruby) at the end. 3. The men down stairs is the devil and was the only one in control from the beginning (to the point that he was in control of the first killer we see in the beginning that she captures and makes her to recibe the case in the first place that’s why if you stop to see the men rise his hands and arms 🙌 in a way that it makes the shape of a triangle “the satanic symbol” this has nothing to do with Longlegs , see him as just another tool being use like Longlegs for a bigger goal) and behind everything all the time, Longlegs was just a right hand if you like, actually that’s why he kill him self because he was like “ok am Done, fuck this am leaving and now is your problem to be resolve and dill with” he was just another slave following rules and that just was waiting the moment to do his last action of part of the deal to be out of the picture and rest in peace , that’s why the mother was the only one at the end with the responsibility and she knew Longlegs was all ready gone and finally happy at peace accomplish his goal. 4. There was never any smoke in the brain, we are saying it because we are the viewers and is basically the devil energy moving but the people in the film never saw or sees the smoke only us the viewers that why the forencer doctor says that the metal balls where empty and had nothing inside, this was just a representation for us to understand what is happening in screen. 5. No many did capture this but if you see the movie in slow motion at the end before she kills her mother you can see when she is standing up and screaming that her face changes a bit to like one of a devil look like, this means that at this point there is nothing more of her and she is now a evil demon that’s why she says don’t call me mother.
21:48 I was thinking I was going crazy thinking that. Specially after watching Hereditary, I cannot help but think that.. ALL this. What happened on the movie, was for Lee to become LongLegs legacy sort off? Like, I had the impression to watch a sort of "possession" happening in front of my eyes. Lee's saw a lot of people dying in front of her, and for a "demon" to possess a soul, the person haves to "break". And it's clear that at the very end, Lee is totally broken. The scene were the mother shoot "her doll" and the ball inside liberates some sort of "smoke" and only LEE react to it.. does tell everything we have to know about what could happen next. Even more so, after killing her mother. I also do think that Longlegs never intended to kill Lee, but turn her onto "the next Longlegs killer" because she has no dad. It might have something to play in that. After all.. Longlegs is her father, if we do assume that she let her "live" because of her mom, and also does have his basement under the house. Also, pay close attention to the last shot. Her face, the angle, the way her skin is so pale. She does look like the murderer. It would make totally sense of why the cat does hiss at her.. when she is in the house with the bodies. I don't know. Wild guess.. Open to interpretations.
upon re-watch, it blew me away to notice that when Lee undergoes the "psychic testing" scene with the word-association, there's an image of an upside-down triangle and she says "father".
I remember being very taken aback by that even through the sheer discomfort i was experiencing
Well spotted! A triangle is often used as the sign for the Trinity “father, son, and Holy Spirit“. The inverted triangles seemed like symbols of the unholy trinity. Devil, long legs and the unholy spirit that possessed.

The thing I found most bizarre is that Carter’s own daughter/family perfectly fits the pattern (e.g her being 9 and her birthday being the 14th) and he NEVER mentions this or puts it together. Wouldn’t an investigating officer find this a bit worrying or at least notice this coincidence?
I think the Carter family was under the dolls influence from the start, the family's introduction to the birthday party with no other children there was bizarre in hindsight.
I thought exactly this. Surely he would've realised that his daughter fits the pattern early on? As soon as the pattern with the birthdays was mentioned I knew that was where the movie was ending. A lot of the story felt forced or incredibly predictable like this for me, outside of the murder dolls and satanic nuns.

i guess it's just denial from carter... i believe he could see the pattern when harker informed him about the victim's birthdate, but he's "too scared" to admit that.. when longleg's dead, it's a relief for him when he said it's over, even when harker informed him there's probability of accomplice... about no kid in ruby's party, probably after harker's mother came, carter told the party was cancelled to ruby's friends... remember when harker got a strange call that told her, she's already late for ruby's party? it meant it's been hours when she arrived at carter's house... but her mother still stayed because she had to watch the slaughter...

Emma, great video! I had a bit of an epiphany when I got home from this movie. In the theater, I was annoyed during the scene where Longlegs comes to Harker's house out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, and while pursuing him outside, she sees that he's actually in her house. Then cut to her sitting calm as a cucumber with her back to the room opening the birthday card. I thought "this is ridiculous" - she just had an adrenaline rush from hell, never saw him leave, doesn't know where he is, and she's calmly sitting in the dark house doing paperwork?! ... But then, after I got home, I realized that during this time, she was still under the sway of the doll (brain ball) at her mother's house. So, in the same way as LL lived in her childhood home and she was blocked from consciously perceiving this, she simply had no recollection (even in the moment) of seeing LL in her house in the woods. So, when she came back inside, she simply found the card and started examining it and may not have even remembered hearing noises or going outside in the moments before. Granted, you'd still be freaked out, but not "the murderer is in my house" freaked out. If this is all correct, then what I thought was a ridiculous character action actually makes perfect sense in the larger plot. Just wanted to share in case anyone else had the same thought.

This scene could have easily been tweaked. The audience sees him over her shoulder and just as she turns around LL disappears out of sight. Or maybe that is what happened??

10:50 I also figured that since she had been catatonic since her family was killed, that she likely still had the mental development of a child in a lot of ways, so she would still speak like a little kid despite her body being so much older.
Long legs also speaks like that at one part in the film. She’s just copying him.
My favorite shot is when it holds on Lee talking with her mother, and you can make out the background just enough to catch something moving...but nothing happens. The anticipation of waiting for someone or something to creep up was anxiety inducing. I didn't love nor hate the story, but the atmosphere was perfect.
If you payed attention to the windows behind her, you could see Longlegs stalking her.
My favorite scene as well. It was done so well because i feel like everyone will fill that empty space with whatever terrifies them most. It's so subtly done too like she is talking to her mom, why am i so uneasy? And then i noticed that space growing, brrrrr.

I think longlegs said he laughed when she wanted to become an investigator because how ironic somebody out there investigating the kind of crimes he’s tied to has no idea their own mother is out committing crimes and one day it might put her on the path to investigate locally what her own mother’s been up to. It is crazy she got into such a career having no idea what was going on under her own roof with her mother and this man but her job is how she came to confront the truth.

In my view, all the children in the film were born in a special way: in a breech position. In the film, it was mentioned that the mother of a girl disliked her because she was born the wrong way around. This means that the baby was born feet first, then the body, and finally the head.
The birth of a baby in a breech position can symbolize the number 9. This could explain why the children had to die at the age of nine. Additionally, when you turn 9 upside down, it becomes 6. If you add 6 to 8, you get 14. Interestingly, all these children were born on the 14th of the month. So the 13th was Lee, because she stayed alive.
But where did the 8 come from

I suspect they also received the letter on the 8th of the month, though this was never explicitly stated. Her mother was the 7th (since 6+7=13), with 6 representing something we all know. She never died on the 14th and remained alive.

I think the black smoke was there as visual confirmation. Because it's not just Harker's doll that gives off that smoke, but Harker herself does as well when it's shot. It's there to show you that sort of link between the two rather than just explicitly telling you.

As a horror fan, I think the genre is really challenging. There is so much commentary on whether a movie is scary or not, even though fear is such a personal experience. I honestly don't like this discourse because there is so much more to a horror film than just that. With Longlegs, whether the viewer was scared or not, I feel like there's no denying that it is fresh, that it is effective and that it brings to the table atmosphere, performances and cinematography we haven't seen in a while and it is a great and memorable addition to the horror genre. I personally loved it and I agree with your takes. I just really appreciate what this movie did. Also thumbs up to marketing done well!

It really is subjective. Some folks see 'horror' as jumpscares and loud sounds. Others see it as violence and gore. Still others believe horror lies within tension and dread, and still OTHERS believe it is a vehicle for social commentary. They're all right.

I was also thinking after I saw the film that during the scene with Carrie Anne Camera, when Carrie mentions that Harker looks familiar or that she's seen her before somewhere, it's not just in reference to their dolls but she probably saw Harker's mother lurking around the time her family was murdered when she was younger, so there is that familial recognition of Harker resembling and reminding Carrie Anne of this . Just a great little foreshadowing moment pointing to Harker's mother's involvement as well.
Yes! I saw it for the second time today and this particular dialogue just clicked this time that didn't the first time. Carrie Anne thought Lee looked familiar because her mother brought them the doll.

Best scene was when they were watching the video tape of Nicolas Cages character in the fbi room and the Nicolas Cage was talking precisely to everyone in the room directly looking at certain characters in the room without him necessarily being there physically, it gave a supernatural feel to him!
Holy crap that scene was SO creepy!!! I thought that too it seemed like he was talking to people in the room. Also I just watched it again and he appears to look directly at Agent Browning, then Harker, and that last super creepy look was right at Carter.....SO GOOD!

i felt really anxious during the movie, no matter what main character had gun or her work partner it made me feel like she is so unprotected and vulnerable, even after longlegs died...
I loved the subtle pay off of the dolls and how it connects to Lee’s not talking. We hear how Karianne (might be forgetting the name) didnt talk since her family died but then seemingly around the time they break into her “brain” she unlocks and speaks again, and then further kind of confirmed when the daughter gets the doll at the end and isn’t speaking
The interrogation scene was the first time Maika Monroe saw Nic Cage, and she didn’t know what he was going to look like. So Lee’s reaction when she walks in is genuine. They even used this in marketing, playing a recording of her actual heartbeat skyrocketing when she saw him.
great breakdown. A couple of things I'm still pondering. 1. The first mission/capture of killer/death of partner. I assume Longlegs guided her there (not truly her being psychic), but the part that is really interesting...the killer she captures. She is framed against a window of the house, even after her partner is shot. There seems ample opportunities for her to be shot at or even killed by that first killer, but instead, he sits in a room, back to her, arms raised, waiting for her. Is this killer locked into Longlegs wavelength, helping with the evil cause? 2. The hardware store/clerk scene. So, this is the only time we get Longlegs interacting with characters outside of our main story. Now this could just be a way to show his strangeness, sure, but I feel it has some deeper importance as it is such a notable interaction. 3. Adult Ruby. It has been pointed out that there is a named actor on IMDB in the role of Adult Ruby. This indicates some sort of scene was most likely shot and cut from the final version of the film. I'm intrigued.
There is some speculation about that online. You could check out the article, “Longlegs credits reveal unseen character who may change movie’s ending”. I hope she didn’t just get edited out.

I feel like they planned on actually showing that Lee decides to work for Satan instead of kill herself and Ruby but decided to cut it to make the ending more ambiguous.
LongLegs is the best film of 2024 & is selling out showings at my local cinema as word of mouth spreads. It's a genuine phenomenon !

I was thinking she doesn’t run out of bullets, it’s that the gun stops working; which is unusual because revolvers don’t often malfunction (so supernatural). I can’t remember if any had been fired before the house scene though, have to see again. Great vid!

This. She fired 1-2 bullets to kill Carter (her boss), & then 1 headshot to kill her mother. So she would have had at least 3 bullets left. I took it to mean the doll head some sort of evil protection over it that prevented it from conventional harm. Which for me meant that when her mother shot the doll of Lee & the magic orb/brain inside, it was part of the plan for Lee to now "remember" what had happened to her & her mom when she was 9. Also, for most of the movie I noticed she carried a semi-automatic pistol as her standard firearm. I don't remember when in the movie she switched to a revolver, or if it was just for this scene.

And yes about the firearm the only thing which I can’t remember is whether she finds the revolver in Longlegs car or somewhere, and therefore he could have not fully loaded it, in a fated way. Iv seen someone say that but I’ve only watched it once so not sure. But I think either way the idea that the gun strangely malfunctions is the best one.
It wasn’t her fbi field weapon! She gets that gun from longlegs car ! It’s a totally different type of gun ! So maybe longlegs only left the perfect amount of ammunition in the gun ??
Saw it again last night, and like you said, I was surprised how many clues there are throughout the film to explain the ending. Maybe it's the atmosphere and imagery of it all, but this was just a movie I love watching and could see myself coming back to it again and again. I guess it made me just happy as peaches 😆

That devil shadow also appears in his first film, The Blackcoat's Daughter, so I think they were establishing that this movie take place in the same universe. Excellent review!

The Director confirmed that the reason long legs looks like that is because he used to be a glam rocker and he has a lot of botched surgeries. He kept getting surgery after surgery to fix it and it kept getting worse. That’s why he uses the white paint on his face to try to cover it.
Loved the film, but glam rock was a thing in the 80s and he already looked like that in the 70s in the film.
I, too, wish Oz Perkins would have shown us "a snake from the 70s doing something weird."

4:10 his character seems to really like rock n roll in general too! Having a guitar in the backdrop and a lot of interesting clothes and stuff in his room lol. That scene where he screams "mommy, daddy, unmake me!!!" Gave me strong rock n roll vibes too lol
3:00 I urge you to watch some more of his movies, ones that don’t just involve the “over acting” people describe. He tries and does a lot of different techniques, which is what makes him so iconic. I would highly recommend some deep dives into him and his style; he’s like a mad scientist of acting. It’s lowkey beautiful.

My take about the appearance of the devil's silhouette is that it looks like the same devil as the one in THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER and that LONGLEGS is kind of a backdoor sequel to that film.
One thing I wondered a lot about after seeing it is the amount that Longlegs is the guy played by Nic Cage and the amount that Longlegs is the devil. Longlegs The Guy says that Ruth *was given* the same choice as other people were, but did the guy give that choice or did the devil? It seemed to me that the guy played by Nic Cage was under the devil's control just like Ruth was.
Another thing that I wondered about was whether that "choice" really took place: all the other families were murdered by the father in the home, but Ruth and Lee lived alone without Lee's father. So, instead of them being murdered, Longlegs and the devil moved in. (Which would also fit with the cuckoo thing?) That also fits thematically as a sequel to THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER where the premise is essentially that if you are a sad and lonely girl and you lose your dad, the devil can be your new dad.
Why was I awake at 3 am morning thinking about this movie? I saw it days ago and it’s still got me thinking.
I think the reason people are saying this film reminds them of Hereditary doesn't have anything to do with the look of the movie, the story, or even the acting. It's because it has that same creeping sense of dread. That's how I saw it anyway.
This is a slow burn atmospheric horror film; as is Hereditary, The Haunting (1963), and many others..and I love them all!

This is a good year for horror films. Every time I look there is another new one that looks atmospheric on the horizon

I went to my local cinema to see it today (August 14th) they held a promo, everyone born on the 14th of any month could see it for free today, so being born on a 14th, I seized the opportunity!!
Also Long Legs literally tells Lee “why do you go ask your mother” when she asks him who his accomplice is
Loved it!! Especially on the second watch where it makes so much more sense; was definitely more engrossed by the visuals and acting on first watch. Great analysis as always.

At 6:13 there is a large shadow behind her with 2 long horns and 2 ears under them, head of a goat shape.
Is she really psychic or are her visions flashbacks. Long legs lived with her and her mother all that time! And he said he made it so she remembers some thing while he makes her forget others and talked about how he knew when she became an agent at 20 and what he thought. It’s weird but obviously he knew all these personal things about her specifically because he lived in the basement below her and her mother. It’s a good movie! I liked it.
Great breakdown Emma, I definitely need to watch this a second time as I did miss a few things you mentioned here. I also found Carrie Ann's scene was my favorite of the film, her monologue played on a loop in my head afterwards for a bit. I also liked how certain themes and imagery of Longlegs tied in with The Blackcoat's Daughter, which is tied as my favorite of his along with Longlegs. I think he's a very talented filmmaker for sure!
I think when you say that It was almost as long legs was speaking through Carrie anne, he was also speaking through harker like when she told her mom that she never said her prayers, the dialogue is very similar, almost a riddle like sort of speech, just as long legs speaks, so I do also agree that she had been in a fog, and controlled all these years until her orb was broken...
I remember one of the first reactions i had online to those saying there wasn't enough rewarding puzzle solving IN the movie was that sometimes evil is just evil all dressed up in pretty puzzles. When you look at the big picture, all those details were just a means to an end in the devil's game. She indeed focused too closely on the imagery.
It is also sobering that evil is always happening and can't be stopped. Oz Perkins said his films were all about his family, and given what happened to both his parents, (his mother died in one of the planes that hit the towers on 9/11!), he must have this feeling of terrible insecurity in the world and you feel that in many of his films. This dreadful feeling that you can't stop what's coming. Maybe Harker chose not to reload her gun at the end because she knew it was pointless? I don't know, but it's a disturbing thought.

I rewatched The Silence of the Lambs last night, and now having seen Longlegs the biggest similarity I noticed was how in many scenes with the other FBI agents Lee is the lone woman just as Clarice is. Yes we see another female agent later in the film but she is overwhelmingly surrounded by men.
I will say though this movie creeped me out big time, I rarely get scared and I was on the edge of my seat for every moment of silence.
I went and saw this movie last night at the latest showing. It was Thursday night and there were about five of us in the theater. I sat all alone and when the film ended we all walked out alone and separately. There was a quiet full moon and it was spooky! I loved it, both the night and the movie.
I was anxious to hear your spoiler review after watching your spoiler free review. I love the detail and research you put into Long Legs. Splendid job. It wasn't quite what I expected. I thought we'd get a lot more of Nicholas Cage but I think we got the right amount. He was brilliant and very creepy. Definitely the stuff of nightmares. I also loved the dialogue. I especially loved Kiernan Shipka and her character. I recognized her right away and was entranced by her. And speaking of the shadow that looked a little too devilish, I found that it was a similar shadow to the one in The BlackCoat's Daughter. So I found that to simply be how Oz like to portray satan.
Last thing, I didn't like how dark it was, my 57 year old eyes had a hard time seeing detail. lol. But I did like the use of the color red. And it was nice to see Blair Underwood. He looks the same as he did back in the 80's when he was the sexy lawyer on LA Law. Hahaha

I too loved this movie and totally agree about the devil shapes, the snakes, and the release of the smoke. Having grown up in the south I kept thinking the snakes were a reference to the sect of Pentecostals that handle snakes. They believe their faith will allow them to handle poisonous snakes without fear of death. I felt like that’s what the mother was doing. She was handling a snake (Longlegs and the devil himself) to keep her and her daughter safe). Very interesting to think about. Love your analysis!!!! ❤❤❤

Wow, I need to rewatch it. It turned out to be a film that had much more layers than what I was expecting and I was unable to pick up on a lot of things. This is why I believe you are the best horror reviewer on youtube!

One thing no one has mentioned was the scene where Harker finds some syringes and drugs on her mom’s kitchen. Was she using them to drug others? Herself? NOBODY has mentioned this!
i think she was using them for herself cuz she was feeling guilty the whole time and maybe wanted to numb the pain

Wow, I love that it's so much deeper than some people than it is🖤 I love how artsy this was with the color grading and risky original angles, every frame was intentional 🖤
Saw the film last night. Wasn’t crazy about it although Cage is amazing. I hope Neon does an Oscar push for him. Again, wasn’t crazy about the film but this video did point out a bunch of stuff I missed. Thank you Emma. It made me just happy as peaches.

I really enjoyed this movie, and even more the longer I think about it. Lol. I don’t think she ran out of bullets. I think the devil just made the gun “malfunction”, so she couldn’t shoot the doll and potentially possess Ruby since Lee’s mom released Lee’s soul (that’s what I interpreted the black smoke coming out to be) and the devil couldn’t affect her anymore. I thought it was so clever that the “man downstairs” ended up not just referring to the devil but Longlegs himself. I felt like he was the devil, and the reason he killed himself was because he was done with that “vessel” and could go into another … potentially Ruby down the road? The only thing that bugged me was you have Lee breaking down all this info for Carter about girls turning 9 on the 14th. So, why in the living hell would he not think, “OMG, my daughter turns 9 in a few days, and it’s on the 14th … and we haven’t caught Longlegs yet …” I get Lee might not think that because she barely knows Carter, and kids don’t typically have birthday parties on their actual birthday. But Agent Carter, you’re an SOB for not calling that out. 🤪 lol. Some people are saying Cage was too much, but I thought he was great and legit made my heart stop a few times because he creeped me out so much! 👀 My husband was laughing when Cage came on, so when I asked after the movie why, he said, “Because I didn’t know that was Cage till he spoke, and he deserves an f’ing award because he played that role THAT good!” Mind you, he deals with evil AND mentally ill people at work on a daily basis, so for him to say that, I think that’s saying something on how Cage played that character. Lol.
Just spitballing a theory, I think Carter was already under the influence of the doll before the movie started.
The first introduction of Carter's family was a little bizarre to be honest; Carter comes home drunk, his daughters wide awake, well past her bedtime and invites Lee (a complete stranger) to her room and subsequent B-Day party, and the wife is silent and cheerful like nothing is wrong.
Carter mentioned being in trouble for staying out late drinking, yet nothing comes of it when he enters the house.
Very good breakdown overall. I feel like we watched the same movie in terms of how it made you feel and react. I saw Long Legs a second time today, partly because I was tired the first time and dosed off. Today I saw it from beginning to end, no snoozing, and I enjoyed as much again.
One thing I really liked was how they used sound scape over music in much of the film. It's one thing I wish they did in the first "Silent Hill" movie. Because in the Silent Hill game, the background sound was all sound scape. Which added to the creepiness of the game. As with Long Legs, the sound scape as well complimented the creepy atmosphere of the movie.
This video felt like 5 min I was hooked! Great job Emma!

Watched Hansel and Gretel last night. I forgot that was an Osgood Perkins film! I LOVED that movie. Maybe I will try Longlegs again.

Absolutely lives up to the hype. I can't stop thinking about it. I agree with you, my favorite scene was the Carrie Ann scene. Great catch about why the mother took so long to answer the phone. I never would have made that connection.
something I caught that I’m super curious to look out for on a rewatch was the television playing in Harker’s mom’s house-the audio playing in the background sounded eerily similar to the sound the silver orb made earlier in the film
The whole exposition scene with the mom really killed this movie. Even if you didn't quite understand what was happening, the scene after at Ruby's birthday hammers it home. I literally yelled "I get it" at the screen. Explaining it three times just dragged and ruined all the fear that had built up.
When her doll’s brain gets blown up, she loses her “mystic” powers.
Another thing I didn’t understand if Harker was no longer under the influence of Longlegs by the end why didn’t she have sense to call for backup before going to her bosses house? And why does she now supposedly have to continue the devils work? She could just leave the house and just get on with her life right? I would point out that plot hole but I know it’s hard to when it just gets explained with “the devil”
And tell them what? My boss is going to mass murder his family because of a doll?

The film is wonderful, but come on... don't make it look like logic-perfect just because of its good parts.
I believe she was under the influence of the doll within the Carter house. Who knows, maybe it made her empty the gun before she tried to fire it, and she just has no memory of that. I really wish there had been 5-10 more minutes because I was left asking "and then what??" LOL
I saw LongLegs yesterday and OMG I went to see it with my Mum and she was like WTF but she actually enjoyed it too, I have not stopped thinking about this movie, just brilliant....Alicia Witt was a real stand up surprise for me loved her in this what a performance and OMG the Carrie Ann scene is one of my favourite in the movie just brilliant

first of all interesting analysis and groove review but keeping that in mind there are few things that where wrong and to correct you or clear:
1. The one that talks in the phone at the end to remains her to go to the birthday is not Longlegs, it is the devil itself.
2. She doesn’t go out of bullets, the point is that she had bullets but the gun didn’t shut, is like the devil won and is not letting her kill the doll just his boss and her mother, even if she shot the girl after the gun would have make another shot but anytime she did try to shot the doll it won’t go off, thats one of the analogies in the film. Actually if you count the shots, she only shot 3 bullets in total, two for her boss and one for her mother, she had a revolver which means she had 6 shots and 6 bullets minimum, that’s why she tries to shut again but one more time the gun didn’t go off, so it’s a message of evil wining and the devil having much power to the point that only he can decide when the doll can be destroy or that you have to pay with you blood and mind like her mom did with all the death the help to acomplish to be available to destroy her daughter’s doll and free her from the spell like at the end. This actually means that now the o my one that will be over the spell and will continue the work of the devil will be the little girl (Ruby) at the end.
3. The men down stairs is the devil and was the only one in control from the beginning (to the point that he was in control of the first killer we see in the beginning that she captures and makes her to recibe the case in the first place that’s why if you stop to see the men rise his hands and arms 🙌 in a way that it makes the shape of a triangle “the satanic symbol” this has nothing to do with Longlegs , see him as just another tool being use like Longlegs for a bigger goal) and behind everything all the time, Longlegs was just a right hand if you like, actually that’s why he kill him self because he was like “ok am
Done, fuck this am leaving and now is your problem to be resolve and dill with” he was just another slave following rules and that just was waiting the moment to do his last action of part of the deal to be out of the picture and rest in peace , that’s why the mother was the only one at the end with the responsibility and she knew Longlegs was all ready gone and finally happy at peace accomplish his goal.
4. There was never any smoke in the brain, we are saying it because we are the viewers and is basically the devil energy moving but the people in the film never saw or sees the smoke only us the viewers that why the forencer doctor says that the metal balls where empty and had nothing inside, this was just a representation for us to understand what is happening in screen.
5. No many did capture this but if you see the movie in slow motion at the end before she kills her mother you can see when she is standing up and screaming that her face changes a bit to like one of a devil look like, this means that at this point there is nothing more of her and she is now a evil demon that’s why she says don’t call me mother.
21:48 I was thinking I was going crazy thinking that. Specially after watching Hereditary, I cannot help but think that.. ALL this. What happened on the movie, was for Lee to become LongLegs legacy sort off? Like, I had the impression to watch a sort of "possession" happening in front of my eyes.
Lee's saw a lot of people dying in front of her, and for a "demon" to possess a soul, the person haves to "break". And it's clear that at the very end, Lee is totally broken. The scene were the mother shoot "her doll" and the ball inside liberates some sort of "smoke" and only LEE react to it.. does tell everything we have to know about what could happen next.
Even more so, after killing her mother. I also do think that Longlegs never intended to kill Lee, but turn her onto "the next Longlegs killer" because she has no dad. It might have something to play in that. After all.. Longlegs is her father, if we do assume that she let her "live" because of her mom, and also does have his basement under the house.
Also, pay close attention to the last shot. Her face, the angle, the way her skin is so pale. She does look like the murderer.
It would make totally sense of why the cat does hiss at her.. when she is in the house with the bodies. I don't know. Wild guess.. Open to interpretations.
