  • Today we are back at the well house to fix the badly broken and rotting deck to the front of the building. The substructure has rotted and some of the deck board have become dangerous so we will replace them and install a new substructure without removing the top deck.

    Howdy Simon- I can fully understand what it’s like doing the very best you can on a tight budget. People nowadays seem to be more interested in getting the most money out of people than really trying to help them. Your good deeds of helping others doesn’t go unnoticed. You’re a good man, Simon. This old world needs more folks like you. God’s blessings to y’all

      Hello Paul, your so kind, thank you. Having been on both sides of customer budgets this way is harder and often less satisfying in physical results. However; the human impact is greater than some can imagine and in this instance it is about a man and his family making memories. Have a great weekend my friend.

    "Would have, should have, could have.." Yep.. heard those phrases a few times..and never bothered listening🤪 To this day, not one single iota of the things I've built using nothing but what I had available, has come down or rotted away... and the the mix you're treating the timber with outperforms much of the stuff used today to pressure treat wood👌I often use a mix of used motor oil, turpentine and boiled linseed oil. It lasts for years and years even under ground. I'd say that's a job well done my friend👍 All the best to you and yours🙂Have a great weekend!

    Hey Simon i know your on a micro budget but if the customer can spring for deck wash no power sprayer a little scrubbing to get any mold or other things off the deck and rinsing let dry and apply stain will help it last longer just a thought . Your a good man sir . Awesome video.

      Well done, cannot even imagine why I didn't think of that. It does need oil badly but I have a pressure washer and the correct end for cleaning decks and floors. I wonder if the new well pump can supply the washer. Only one way to find out. Thanks for jogging my brain!

    • @archangel729
      @archangel729 11 дней назад +1

      @@arctic-rebel no problem but if you use a pressure washer min 2 weeks before you can oil as the pressure washer penitrates the wood deep and it need that time to dry out , now deck wash with hose and scrub brush need s only a day or two to dry so its a time thing your choice lol. Be well my friend until the next video peace out.

    At least you will be bringing back more people to live in the village. It might prompt others to come there. Don’t worry about the joist,rafter thing,I do the same thing. Anyone that’s been with you for a while, know you know the difference. The deck repair is reasonable considering the budget but are the steps bad? Always watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸🦅 No Snow Just Breeze !

      Thanks Kirby, you are correct it will be more back to the village and children is something we really need here. The steps are not bad, I think they have been replaced more recently it was just the hand rails that were bad. Have a great weekend.

    Hi Simon, the community around you must be lucky to have a man like you, who can fix and rebuild anything much cheaper than companies do. But I see you use boiled ineseed oil to paint on the logs, will that last for many years? I use impregnated pine when I build terresse and other things outside. It is much more expencive than the way you do. Greetings from Norway, hilsen Asle

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  10 дней назад

      Thank you, impregnated with what? I have also used it but as you say very expensive. There are so many very old buildings here and they have survived with 2 treatments. The first is red oxide as you know our houses are red for a reason. The by products from the mines, thus the red. The 2nd is boiled linseed oil. Used by itself it does not penetrate as well as I want so I add terps or any thinner to take it further into the timber. Then some solvent basted end grain sealer and finally some colour. I do this based on my knowledge of the structure of all grow timber both softwood and hard wood. More specifically what happens when a tree is cut and starts to dry. If you can keep an air flow and water out it will last for very many years. It also looks better then the green dye.

    • @aslerunarborgersen5175
      @aslerunarborgersen5175 10 дней назад

      @@arctic-rebel thank you for your reply. When I say "impregnated I mean that green stuff they impregnate pinewood with, under high pressure. They used to use copper but I'm not sure if the use that anymore. The best thing is what they use on railroad ties, creosot, but it is highly toxic and not good for the environment. Old Norwegian stave churches are built with something they call heartwood pine, it is a pinetree full of resin and tar...and will last very long. But maybe boiled lineseed oil and thinner also will do the job. I must try :) Much cheaper.
