After last week and getting this tent set up, we COULD NOT wait until we were able to spend our first night in here! If you guys have been following along for a little while now, you probably know that Squatters Heights (what we've named our treehouse tent site) is named after the Russian squatters cabin that is located maybe 50 feet from there. The kids have been collecting odds and ends from the squatters cabin over the years and we've already used the wood stove to heat our floating sauna and the siding to build our kids treehouse.
We knew we wanted to bring a little bit of the original squatters cabin into Squatters Heights and this week, we did just that. We absolutely love how this little mini project turned out! When we started out, I had a design in mind for the tent, but after repurposing this wood, its changed up the design elements so I still have some work to do for the finished product!
All that to say, we DID have our first night in the tent.... and it was AMAZING!!!! The frogs, the owls, the loons, the breeze.... EVERYTHING was perfect! Until about 3 AM when we had a very unexpected guest IN THE TENT! FF to 3:30 AM and that's when the sleep stopped and the storm watching/listening began. My oh my it was a DOOZY! If you're local, you know how bad last weeks storm was! All the plans we had to continue on with the build were impossible to complete with all the rain. We had NO idea the devastation it would cause for families and businesses near us. We were very fortunate that we had only minor damages between our home, the treehouse and our rental property.

Put a waterproof mattress pad cover over your mattress before you put the sheets and bedding on. It will definitely preserve your mattress
Yes! Great thinking! We have a waterproof/bug proof zippered encasement on it, and a mattress pad on top of that!

Just wondering how long it took Ted to realize the mosquito on his chin. I hope you guys are safe with all the wicked weather and flooding so many people are dealing with in Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota my heart goes out to all of you 🙏🙏. Even though l have not gotten back to Michigan yet friends are letting me know how bad the storms have been there also the lake l am on has gone up 5 ft and over flowing my break wall. Hope to be back in a couple weeks after l feel better to see the damage and cleanup. Great job on the decoration, Clifford and your barn cat love it for sure. Stay safe and see you soon.🙏🙏

Our lake was up 5 feet but the lakes above us in our chain of lakes were up over 8 feet! Unheard of!! I hope your lake property is ok up there and pray you feel well enough to get back up there soon! 🙂 we hope you have a blessed weekend!

We got the tent from Whiteduck Outdoors. It’s around 2500 depending on any add ons you get. (We added fire repellent) It’s required in MN.

Are you at all concerned about the mattress getting infested with bugs?
No, we have a zippered mattress encasement that is bug and waterproof. We use them on all the beds at our rental as well. I do wash them and let the mattress air out as well. The thought of bugs in the mattress 🤢 eek!

This is our home away from home. ❤️ She was in her own bed at the homestead with all three dogs. 🐾
This is not a critique, but hear me out. You said you have been living a non-toxic lifestyle for 10 years, which is great. And I love that the mattress is made of organic materials. But you bought sheet vinyl flooring for the tent, which is the most toxic plastic made by man and is bad for people and the environment. I'm just wondering if you are aware if the dangers of vinyl? It's sort of a contradiction to have them together in that setting. I know options are limited though! And no need to answer to us, I just wanted to mention it. The tent is turning out very nice.
I guess what we should say is “we’ve been trying to live a non-toxic lifestyle for ten years” 🫣 It’s impossible to rid yourself of all toxic materials, but we try probably harder than most. We actually were unaware of the toxicity of the floor we purchased. The SDS (safety data sheet) that comes with this product states it’s a 0 for health hazard, 1 for fire hazard, and 0 for reactivity. (If one can even trust that data) we appreciate your knowledge. Any ideas on an alternative in this situation? 🌲

Kids sleep up at the house! We did offer a blow up mattress for Finley that night but she wanted to sleep in her own bed. 🥰

The tent is perfect! We find it hard to leave when we get up here! We really do appreciate the prayers! Luckily nothing serious has happened to any of our property! Our garden may be drowning but that’s not the end of the world!

Rocky scared the you know what out of us! The stairs apparently are bear proof…. The trees surrounding the platform are however not 😝
Finley was with all of the dogs and also didn’t get much sleep 😖 Our oldest dog Huck HATES storms…. So he kept her up all night too! It was early bedtime for all of us the following day! 😂

I have read about the flooding up there and my prayers are with y'all. I love how the tree house is turning out. Aside from the thunder and lightning the rain sounds so soothing. We are continuing to get hit by rain too! 🌧️ It’s been such a wet year! Making up for such a mild winter I guess! This “treehouse” is our practice one! The real treehouse will be in a different location and an actual stick built building! We are just trying to catch up on savings to be able to get that going! You’re so right Thomas! Ted ain’t getting any younger 🫣

What a great video. That's a excellent head board, hope you don't have to put that mattress back in the box. The weather has been pretty crazy over a.large portion of the country we had 3 and half inches last night. But that's nothing compared to what Minnesota is getting, prayers to your state. Yes the weather has been bizarre! Hopefully you guys don’t have any flooding! 3.5 inches is still a lot of rain! Do you guys have basements there? That’s where a lot of the problems happen for families around here.

@@TheLiFeInPines we have a basement and it has stayed dry. lt is mostly unfinished, when I used to clean carpets I sucked water out of a lot of carpets in basements and decided we would definitely not have carpet in a basement.

Where do the kids sleep in the tree house
They sleep down the ladder, through the field, up the hill, across the lawn and in their nice warm beds. ☺️ They’re more than welcome to sleep up there or use it as a hang out but it’s more of a couples getaway. Maybe we’ll have to get another “kids tent” up for them nearby!
Smart backpak done that one before with an old frame from a backpak I had. Easy way to move stuff when solo. The tent is looking sweet

The whole time I watched this video, as more and more weight was added to the elevated floor, I kept expecting a devastating collapse. Thankfully it didn't happen, and the space turned out beautiful. Great work!!!
Oh my word, that would be absolutely awful! Thankfully we’ve got it secured well with 5 support TABs plus 1 cable and 1 post to ground! More than enough to support what we’ve got and more!

We're thinking about doing something similar on our property. What is your secret for keeping the tent mold and mildew free?
The tent has a mildew resistant coating on it. I think making sure it stay dry is key. We keep the windows open pretty much all the time for good air flow. If it's out in the sun (ours isn't) you should have a problem at all! It's still so new to us, so we hope all this works! We've never owned a canvas tent before so we'll see!
Loved the Red Green Show reference, "If the women don't find you handy at least let them find you handy."😅 However, disappointed you used ratchet straps instead of duck tape I'm sure the safety lady had something to do with that. 🤗 Thanks for another great video.

You definitely moved in, in style! The tent looks amazing, from headboard to cooking station on wheels! You have to have the decorator genes to know a potted plant makes all the difference as it did. Brilliant! You have NO idea how envious I am for that first night of lightning and thunder, a passion of mine, something we rarely get here in MA.
