Paramotor Fly Camping Setup

  • Last year (2017), I entered the UK Icarus X paramotor competition. It was the first flying competition I have entered since flying and required camping with the paramotor for 2 nights! I have never camped with my paramotor, so I wasn't that well prepared, all I had was a 3x4 meter tarp, but no sleeping bag and I got damp and cold, this resulted in no sleep!
    This year, I'm entering the UK IcarusX again, but this time with better prep. I have a tent, sleeping bag, bed, pillow and even a little cooker! I have already put the gear to the test by flying 40mile return trip from home to our paramotor club with the return leg the next morning.
    So I'm better prepared this time!

    Nice video! I worked with an ultralight backpacker friend to shave off weight in my kit. One item I never thought I'd need was a windscreen for the stove. Winds can get to 30mph+ in the desert in a very short period of time. My alcohol stove was nearly useless in that situation. I now use an Esbit stove because it's light and can use wood as well. I also carry other survival type items, more water, and use a satellite tracker.

    Great stuff - this really shows exactly what's involved in a good PPG 'touring' setup. Just love the way you've thought it all through.

    Welldone Andy. You have put a lot of effort into this setup. It should serve you well especially for the warmer summer months and you will be a lot more comfortable compared to last time you did the Icarus. I fancy a go myself to be honest but logistics could be difficult not to mention the Maverick is more orientated towards sport flying whereas the Bulldog is a great Fly camping machine:)

      Wiltshire Man - Thanks Sandy! I just need to make sure I can nail the launches with all this kit, just a nice small breeze will help with all the extra weight. :-)

      Cheers Tony, start preparing, really cool to go on a fly camping trip, it doesn't have to be far, you can make it a micro adventure somewhere local :-)

      Also... no pants in your kit..... saves a few grams I reckon. No loo roll either. Like being on scout camp all over again.

      Tim Priest - actually loo roll is on my “I forgot to pack list”. Pants, who cares, might keep the birds 🦅 away 😜

    Andy - How about a couple of lengths of barrier tape (orange & white) for the tricky early morning nil wind TO's.

    • @Bexxy
      @Bexxy  6 лет назад +1

      Tony Fisher - I did consider that, I struggled last year with light wind which was switching direction quite a bit. Otherwise nill wind doesn’t cause me an issue.

    great introduction to para camping, I see that you've included 2 stroke oil, but what about fuel ?, how to you fill up when miles away from a tax, sorry, petrol station ?.

    • @Bexxy
      @Bexxy  2 года назад

      You plan a route with petrol stations near your land out. You need the oil to mix with the fuel from the petrol station. If you have a paramotor with a removable tank you can walk or hitch a lift to the nearest petrol station and leave the rest of your gear where you landed. 😀

    Have you checked out the Gin Paratent, which uses the paramotor as part of the internal structure to support the tent? At just over 1kg it provides complete rain cover for both you and the paramotor and looks like it would save weight and space.

    • @Bexxy
      @Bexxy  3 года назад

      Yes I have seen that, it looks like a good para tent. 😀

      Yes I tried out the kit 1st weekend of May 2018. Flew 40 mile XC with the kit, camped over night and flew back home the next morning. Hopefully more adventures to come.
