That's how I first came across his music as a teen in the 90s. I also had an English teacher in high school that took an interest in me.. I stood out and was mostly bullied by kids and ignored by teachers, she told me Leonard Cohen was her favorite singer. I wish I had of known more about him back then

      “My people are enslaved
      because they are ignorant.“
      - Isaiah 5:13
      "Every revolution evaporates
and leaves behind it only the
      slime of a new bureaucracy."
      - Franz Kafka
"The State has always one purpose: to limit, control, subordinate the individual... Revolution is aimed at new arrangements; insurrection leads us no longer to let ourselves be arranged, but to arrange ourselves, and set no glittering hope on 'institutions'."
      - Max Stirner
"If socialists understood economics, they wouldn't be socialists... A claim for equality of material position can only be met by a government of totalitarian powers."
      - Friedrich August Hayek
"Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all."
      - Frédéric Bastiat
“Socialism is not in the least what it pretends to be. It is not the pioneer of a better and finer world, but the spoiler of what thousands of years of civilization have created. It does not build, it destroys. For destruction is the essence of it. It produces nothing, it only consumes what the social order based on private ownership in the means of production has created. Since a socialist order of society cannot exist unless it be as a fragment of socialism within an economic order resting otherwise on private property, each step leading towards socialism must exhaust itself in the destruction of what already exists... The champions of socialism [call] themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty. They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent. They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office.”
      - Ludwig von Mises
"The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that they do not work. Therefore we should not be surprised to find the left concentrated in institutions where ideas do not have to work in order to survive... It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong... The intelligentsia pay no price for being wrong... [That's] the secret of their influence. If you come up with a lot of wrong ideas and pay a price for it, you're forced to think about it and to change your ways, or else get eliminated. But there's no such test. The only test for most intellectuals is whether other intellectuals go along with them, and if they all have a wrong idea it becomes invincible... Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it."
      ~ Thomas Sowell
"Few discoveries are more irritating than those which expose the pedigree of ideas... The history of institutions is often a history of deception and illusions; for their virtue depends on the ideas that produce and on the spirit that preserves them, and the form may remain unaltered when the substance has passed away... If the past has been an obstacle and a burden, knowledge of the past is the safest and the surest emancipation... The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern: every class is unfit to govern... And remember, where you have a concentration of power in a few hands, all too frequently men with the mentality of gangsters get control."
      ~ Lord Acton
"Nothing is more common than to see a person holding on to a shell in which truth has dwelt, without realizing that the precious thing he wants has gone on and reembodied itself in new and living ways which he fails to follow and comprehend."
      ~ Rufus M. Jones
"Give me liberty, or give me death!"

This was absolutely the best concert I have ever been to. The privilege of seeing him sing at the State Theater in Detroit in June 1993 was like a religious experience. After the concert, we waited outside in the back of the theater for Mr. Cohen and all of the band to come out; and it was worth every second. Not only was Mr. Cohen kind enough to autograph the concert program, but the gentle way he shook my hand, thanking me for coming, and the sincere way he looks into your eyes while he says it. Loved this and will never forget the magical experience. How I so wanted to get on that bus with them and take that journey with them the rest of the way.

    "Waiting For The Miracle"
    Baby, I've been waiting,
I've been waiting night and day.
    I didn't see the time,
I waited half my life away.
    There were lots of invitations
and I know you sent me some,
    but I was waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
I know you really loved me.
but, you see, my hands were tied.
I know it must have hurt you,
it must have hurt your pride
to have to stand beneath my window
with your bugle and your drum,
and me I'm up there waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
    Ah I don't believe you'd like it,
    You wouldn't like it here.
    There ain't no entertainment
    and the judgements are severe.
    The Maestro says it's Mozart
but it sounds like bubble gum
    when you're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
    Waiting for the miracle
    There's nothing left to do.
    I haven't been this happy
since the end of World War II.
    Nothing left to do
when you know that you've been taken.
    Nothing left to do
when you're begging for a crumb
    Nothing left to do
when you've got to go on waiting
waiting for the miracle to come.
    I dreamed about you, baby.
It was just the other night.
    Most of you was naked
Ah but some of you was light.
The sands of time were falling
from your fingers and your thumb,
    and you were waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come
    Ah baby, let's get married,
    we've been alone too long.
    Let's be alone together.
Let's see if we're that strong.
    Yeah let's do something crazy,
    something absolutely wrong
    while we're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
    Nothing left to do ...
When you've fallen on the highway
and you're lying in the rain,
and they ask you how you're doing
of course you'll say you can't complain --
    If you're squeezed for information,

    Nothing left to do
When you know that you've been taken
    Nothing left to do
When you're begging for a crumb
    Nothing left to do
When you've got to go on waiting
Waiting for the miracle to come
When you've fallen on the highway
And you're lying in the rain,
And they ask you how you're doing
Of course you'll say you can't complain
    If you're squeezed for information,
That's when you've got to play it dumb
You just say you're out there waiting
For the miracle, for the miracle to come

I can not get this song off my mind. For weeks now, every moment of quiet - this song creeps in. ... I barely even noticed it first time I heard it. Weird how that happens.

An acquaintance I had back in the 90's turned me on to Leonard Cohen. I went through a bad divorce and listened to his music from this CD so I bought it. I played it over and over in the middle of the night when I was hiding and trying to run. It was too depressing for most of the people in my life, sort of macabre. Then in 2002, my 15 year old son, my Christmas eve baby was murdered. I dug it out and listened to it over and over and over. There is just something about his poetry, the music he puts it to that was really comforting. My youngest son and 2 of Zack's best friends all got "Zack Tat's". Lukas thought the art on this CD would have been a perfect tat for me. I lost that CD and have been looking for one at various stores.

If anyone has to, if you have to remember me, please remember me as someone who was deeply in love with the liberating, the soothing voices of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Cohen feels more like a soothing shelter sometimes, though. But God, the chills this specific song gave me with its lyrics and Leonard's heavy, profoundly spiritual and bone-to the marrow-seductive voice! ❤

Fuck..so deep song, this is truth, most of us are passing our lives in the waiting for the miracle to come. While the life is coming around us, that's the song about - stop to wait the miracle to come every moment of your life but wake up and do the miracle by yourself.
