  • Today I tested a cheap travel water heater element (immersion boiler) from China from Ebay for just 2 USD. Does it work? Is it safe or dangerous? Is it idiot-proof? Let's do some experiments and see.

    In USSR you had these very commonly, and there was also the bigger version at 1750 or even 2000 or 3000w. They were 30 cm long and you used those to heat tubs of water at a time. My grandma when she was young in 1950s she didn't have hot water heater in her house so before bath time she would fill the tub and immerse one or two of these huge heaters for 10 minutes and water would be nice and toasty.. God old times.. well, not so good.

    A few days (maybe a week ago) I had this high current transformer I made and I used a bit of steel wire (maybe 1-1.5mm?) to make a heating element to light some pieces of wood on fire. A butane lighter wouldn't keep them alight, but the heating element worked so well.

    Cool. So is that little "6" almost "B" symbol always the cyrillic character for voltage?
    I wonder if this little guy would be an ideal element for a small reflow oven. It could probably work as a preheating device for crude SMD reworks too. The plastic and wire would obviously need to go.
    -Jake

    • @JaMoBo265
      @JaMoBo265 5 лет назад +1

      В in cyrillic is equal to V in latin, so i actually just means Volts :) The latin B in cyrillic looks like this Б or this б (upper vs. lowercase)

    • @simontay4851
      @simontay4851 5 лет назад +1

      You would need to control the temperature or it will burn out.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 лет назад +4

      B stands for volts in cyrillic. The B symbol is actually pronounced "V" in russian.
      I think this element is going to fail quite soon. It's very poor quality and it's not designed to run in free air. I also forgot to say that after the experiment, the tube has mains in it! You probably should use something of a higher quality and also designed for free air operation.

I bought some boost converter a few years ago. Claims 800 watts. Best I could get out of it was around 90 watts before the thing nearly melted down. LOL.
