My Granddad drove nothing but Macks, started off in a solid tire, chain drive, dual drive '26 AC. I have a picture from 1930 when the guys took fleet pics in front of the company trucks and one of my Grandma hamming it up behind the wheel. He thought they were the only brand of real purpose built trucks and called his own son a sissy for driving a KW, haaa! Thankfully he didn't live long enough to see automatics in Volvos or people washing their feet in rest stop sinks become commonplace, he'd have some choice words for sure.

Drove R-models for 14 years. Our 12 spds had a short stick for the deep reduction. I think they moved it up to the dash a few years after our newest R (86?). 350 & 12 spd was a good setup for flatbedding, I could almost keep up with the "big hammers" of the day. I especially enjoyed going up through the gears while backing up, proving what a big rigger I was...In '98 they put me in an air ride 454 CH, then I knew I was a big rigger!

I'm from PA, and they use to make em in Allentown, PA, but ever since Volvo took over, it's sucked the toughness out of that brand. First company I drove for had a 2013 Mack that dumped all of its oil on the ground the first week I was in it. The second had DPF problems 2 weeks in a row. Finally they put me in a Kenworth with a cummins and that thing was much more reliable. Then the dicks took me out of that and put me in a natural gas volvo and that's when I quit to go elsewhere.

You can put a trip switch on the clutch pedal to kick the jake out without having to switch it off and on. I put one on mine 3 days after I bought it back in ‘89.

    • @hermanfelderhof5305

You should mount another engine brake switch on side of the gear lever so you can turn your engine brake on and off quicker and easier without having to take your hand off the gear stick and grope around on the dash for it. That way you can use it to decelerate the engine quicker in an upshift too if you want. Just run two wires down your gear stick and join them to the two wires at the other switch in behind the dash, so you have two switches wired in parallel. I drove a Mack with a twelve speed like that for years and it worked great. Our head mechanic worried if it ever shorted out and sparked on the gearstick it might cause arcing inside the transmission, so I made sure it was really really well insulated and I was allowed to keep it like that. When I left the company it only took me a minute to unplug my wires and remove my switch and the rig was back to its original condition again.

Thanks for the shifting tutorial. Those Mack 12-speeds sure are a different animal. Buddy of mine had one behind an E9 in an '89 Superliner. Always thought it was interesting how they need to be split while making the shift, rather than pre-selecting like on a typical Eaton 13/15/18-speed. I think the reason a lot of drivers shift them with the jake brake on is to reduce the amount of time in between shifts...you can play a hand of cards or take a bite of your sandwich in between shifts, especially with the 5-speed Maxitorque transmissions...lol

Came home and had to revisit your video, BostonTrucker, for the "full effect" on my computer...cell phone on-the-job just not the same! Love that sequence beginning @ 2:30 with the CB chat backed-up with the Mack idle...n-i-c-e!! My first run with Sharkey was from Quincy IL (their home office) to Sacramento CA in their one-and-only Ultraliner...nothin' but trouble!! Back in Quincy, the only "other" ride they could offer me was -- again -- a "one-and-only" unit, a Superliner turned-in by a lease driver who hauled "swingin' beef" to the West Coast in the "Monfort" lane! I took it "in a blink"... Thanks, Mike, for always making my day (and night!!)...

12 speed is my favorite Mack transmission, I grew up on a 5+2 in old gasoline Ford's it shifts just the same. I drove the old JF White tractor, it was an 88 RD with a 2 valve 350 and a 12 speed. That old Mack would out pull the CH with the 427 Mack engine and an 18 speed. The puppy leash will either stall her out or do nothing, flip the switch expecting to slow down and you speed up ...

I'm largely a "Mack guy" by circumstance (although I must have imprinted early because a photo of me from back when I was 11 or 12 years old shows me assembling an AMR "R685ST" 2/25 scale kit) because I did my commercial licence road test (Class A here in Ontario, Canada) on a late 1970's R model with the Mack 12 speed (and all-Mack powertrain including camelback suspension and top loader axles), then went on to drive for J&F Trucking which was a flatbed carrier based in Ajax, Ontario that ran an all-Mack fleet. Mostly R600's with a few F models and Superliners, one MH Ultraliner and later some CH series tractors.
I left over the road trucking back in 1997 and went to work for a welding company, they had an F800 (Ford) and International S2600 boom trucks. But even they later added a Mack to the fleet - 2002 CX613 aka Mack Vision tractor!

I love them bulldogs. My grandparents lived just up the road from a MACK dealer. Learned to drive stick in MACK and was hooked ever since. It’s just a shame Volvo owns them now.

@@TheBostonTrucker It’s rare, but I have seen a few videos of superliner’s in Europe and they have some pretty wild paint schemes.

Are all the Cardillo trucking companies owned by the same family? There's one on Shun Pike in Johnston Rhode Island.

My GMC general ( Goliath) does the same thing if I don’t turn the Jake switch off. It will stall the truck out.
And nowadays Volvo is Mack, or Mack is Volvo which ever way you wanna look at it.

One that know the PUPPIE DOG /MACK always was built to be a tough truck and take alot of abuse, And stand up well with that. PUPPIE DOG never was a pretty truck, But made up for that in been tough. I drove them and I did not like their 5 speed transmission they had in the later 70s. Mack came out with a nice truck in 1997 I drove one O.T.R. And that one had air ride it was nice to drive. What sucked when the government ran MACK OUT OF BUSINESS. I remember when that on the national news. At the time the Gov. Employees were wrong with their violations of U.S. Code Title 18, Sections 872, 873, And the goverrnment employees what they did was wrong from the start. Plus the violation of the federal document of ( the charter of freedom / declaration independence) the first 2 paragraphs, see on google to read that.

I would say or think the only truck a Mack guy would drive if he had to besides his Mac would be a Brockway Husky 360,361,761 and others the Superliner was originally Destined for Brockway but the Company closed their Company down so the Design went to Mack Brockway and Mack cabs were the Same

One thing you didn't mention is in the winter the splitter doesn't like to work until the trans warms up and we use to run it like a 5 speed until you got everything moving.

    • @TheBostonTrucker
      @TheBostonTrucker  3 года назад

Never heard this before. I've only driven two trucks with the 12 speed but neither one has had Winter issues.

@@TheBostonTrucker When it's really cold at least the many 12's I've driven would take a while to warm up so we would just straight stick them.
