The best way to strain "Yes, and" is not to outright deny it, but to keep asking "Ok. How?" And "Okay, why?"
It puts the burden on the other person without alienating your audience.

That's actually a very interesting idea I didn't hear before and that makes a lot of sense.
I think there is something deeper at play here. This "yes, and" mechanism is not only a rule of impov, it's a common mechanism in any human communication, especially small talks, and it's, I think, based on what we call in French "le renvoi d'assenceur" ("sending back the lift") : You do something for someone so they'll do it for you. In small talks at work as in Rogan's podcast, it means "I accept as coherent with my worldview what you say without asking for proof, so when I say what I believe you'll accept it as coherent with your worldview without asking for proof". For each participant, it's a way to ensure that what they want to say will be heared, but the result is that they are then forced to integrate, at least in surface, what the others said in their "worldview", provided they want to keep a good relationship (and business) with them.
I think that a probable explanation for why conspiraties have this tendancy to grow in all directions as they recruit new believers : the price to pay to recruit a member is to integrate their very own idea into the whole thing.

    Hmmmm.
I'm not so sure about this.
What exactly is meant by "conspiracy theory" in this context and more importantly, what makes someone a grifter?
I see these words used to discredit people who are successful plenty, but what if those people actually believe in the things they are saying?
If someone is just wrong about something, are they still a grifter?
Are we supposed to avoid asking deeper questions about the power structures because that makes us a conspiracy theorist?
At what point does a real conspiracy get to be called out for what it is?
What about the legal ones that currently control much of the censorship on these platforms?
I don't know.... to me this seems like it needs a much more nuanced solution than just labeling people.
Certainly, if you can actually expose corruption, that's one thing, but just having a different opinion about something "scientific" doesn't seem like a good enough reason to label someone in this way.
People do lie and I'm sure it happens on the internet.
But figuring out who that actually is and proving it is a lot harder.
We've built a system that's based on attention and i think we have need to blame the system more than those who find success within it.
Most of the mainstream takedowns i see attempted on people like Russell Brand are completely baseless and ignorant.
Seems much more like projection to me

  • @Hypnotist1

Really interesting idea but as someone trained in improv there's a bit of a stretch here. "Yes And" only applies when you are doing improv.
You can still be a critical thinker and still do improv. As someone also trained in journalism as well, remember that traditional journalism was more founded on alcoholism than critical thinking, thus a "No I'm cranky and tired" philosophy. The truth is improv training often makes people more successful, perhaps, like Joe Rogan, and not automatically gullible idiots. It actually makes the world a better place.
Journalism used to have gate keepers who managed the news. Now it's a free for all. What's missing is respected critical fact-checking or truth checking operations at the right scale.

I came here for a reasoned explanation as to how Russell Brand is a grifter. I tend to like him, but want to check my bias. This argument that they go on each other’s platform, by itself, is not a strong argument and I don’t see much more to your argument. With your thumbnail, I’d say choose a set of specific grifts of the person you’ve highlighted and discuss. For now, it’s you who’s gotten the cheap click with little substance. I’d be upset if I was a podcaster and my face was on a thumbnail, and the argument was that me and a group of people uphold grifts simply by going on each other’s shows. I’d ask for proof that we are enriching ourselves on grifts. I did enjoy the David Sinclair episode for that content, but you exposed specific wrongdoings, and people aren’t grifters for believing grifters (Rogan believing Sinclair). Good luck on your journey

@@sgcarney Correct my assumption: Your argument is that there is a group of internet personalities who feed off one another by using ‘yes, and’ which causes them to support more and more absurd conspiracy theories. Your thumbnail for this argument is Russell Brand with the word “Yes”. The only assertion this video made was that they are on each other’s videos, but did not address any false conspiracy theories, and did not address a theory pushed by Brand. I would think if you used him in the thumbnail, at least one false narrative should be asserted. Sorry if I missed something.

@@sgcarney Thanks for the response. I do like a lot of your content and think there needs to be more critical thinking on the internet and I appreciate your attempt to do that. It is interesting that in a video where you talk about internet echo chambers, you use another well critiqued techniques to garner more views (algorithms to increase views). I would also wonder if you look at creators on the left and see if they go on each other’s shows, and whether or not they support more far-fetched conspiracy theories, or if they are immune to the effect. I think it would also be helpful to actually discuss a conspiracy theory you believe is wrong that is widely circulated. I apologize if that seems overly critical, and I’m subscribed, so I’ll watch more. I have been impressed by many of them, I just found some issues with this one.

Now, the first guy is just your regular worka day jeans and t shirt guy. And the regular guy is saying to the SS uniformed guy “Not much… what’s up with you?”
Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes, people ARE racists, or espouse racist adjacent ideas. Ending food stamps for those who don’t speak English WILL save the nation millions of dollars. But it’s first & foremost RACIST. And that takes “saving millions” right off the table of decency.

    • @MattAngiono

@malcolmbliss777 you don't seem to understand the other side of it.
No one said there aren't real racists on the world because that would be silly.
But if you aren't paying attention, you may have missed just how often people throw around such accusations to discredit people they don't like.
"Conspiracy theorist" works the same way, as an attempt to shut down debate by attacking someone's character.
Never mind the hundreds of real conspiracies that have been proven true.
There's a reason that there are laws written about conspiracy and this system breeds it regularly.
Imagine if all you had to do to get away with actually being in a major conspiracy is label whoever discovered your crimes as a conspiracy theorist....
Is that your idea of a healthy society?
