My math was seriously off. The true total would have been only $2M from ad sense. So instead of making 28x the standard Stanford salary, he only was making 3x. I regret the error and will issue a video correction.
Regardless of huberman as a person, you indirectly highlight an old issue in science, which is that people can change their mind and can even come to different conclusions individually as experts, or paid for by industries. Its not just on podcast level, its a general pattern. And it has become very complicated to discern which information is good and credible. In the past we might not have know we were mislead, intentionally or not. Now we *know* that making good descisions is much more complicated than it used to present itself. Personally I dont know how to get good info at this point.
'I have no desire to infinitely sell you out to sponsors...' That's an interesting way to give yourself wiggle room, both morally and legally... Most people are uncomfortable acknowledging legal minutiae for what it really is... I am not one of those people.
Someone's lying to us. Huberman HAS NOT changed his mind at all. Your carefully edited clips aim to give the impression he was against Blue Blockers. Not So. He merely said they'll not work as well on Circadian Rhythyms if you're looking at bright lights (as opposed to low light - which he has always explained). Additionally, your "choice" clip about him "mocking" manufacturers of Blue Blockers - it's clear he DOES NOT in fact do ANY MOCKING - he merely says research has been done. Furthermore as far back as 2021 he specifically says "I have NOTHING against Blue Blockers - many people find them useful". But everything I state here can be checked in a couple of moments. Is "get better sleep" Medical Advice now ? Is a comfy Bed or Pillow a "Medical Device" ? Get real.
Money corrupts. Here in Finland someone like Huberman would have lost their lisence. They'd still probably keep their academic creds unless the offense is extremely severe, but they would not be able to practice in any scientific organization, instution or research center using their credentials after doing something like this. Huberman is simply a more evolved snakeoil salesman, who abuses their scientific credentials and science as a tool for marketing whatever for personal monetary gain.
I think Huberman had noble intentions when he started out but like so many people on YT once money started flowing in he started to chip away his integrity one sponsorship deal at a time until he got to where he is now - shilling a product he himself called bad
This happens way too much. It's gotten to the point where I've rotated almost all the channels I watch and subscribe to. I fear for the inevitable time where their reach grows so much they sell out.
or maybe he was already shady from the begining because he cheated on 5 women at the same time by telling them they are his only love to each and every one of them ... and to make up for his fucked up behaviour he thought he could upload science content on youtube in a way that nobody else was even qualified and to this day few people are anyway ... the majority of college profesors just dont bother with uploading content on youtube where they can talk about universities lectures
nah he was recycling old stuff already said by others from the start. Watered down stuff I must add, because it seems he likes the sound of his own voice.
Actually none of clips shown or indeed Huberman's videos indicate he has changed his mind on anything. But to notice that you'd actually have to play very close attention. He neither rubbished Blue Blockers nor made fun of the Manufacturers. Question is why does this video deliberately misinterpret Huberman's words in order to brand him a liar? Surely there must be some more damning Huberman quotes available? After being mislead - we're then lead to believe that Beds, Pillows, Orange Glasses, Lullabies, Blankets are all Medical Devices or Procedures & that a nice warm drink at bedtime needs FDA approval for the Medical Condition of "Needing Better Sleep".
Huberman made claims about what time to drink coffee to avoid afternoon crashes. The English guy that has a coffee channel did a study and Humberman's claims didn't hold up. Humberman responded that what he said had been misrepresented, and the coffee guy polity engaged and showed it was wasn't a misrepresentation. Huberman left the conversation.
For anyone wondering that coffee guy was James Hoffmann btw, and yeah that was such a weak reaction from Huberman. It would be easy to just admit that maybe you'd be wrong or whatever, but that just showed he isn't a person you should take seriously.

The thing that really galls me is the sheer HUBER-is, y'know? To think he can just break blue and go on actin' 'n livin' as if, like, as though nothin's even changed, ya dig? Stanford would not allow this unless they were involved. There reputation is not stellar if you dig deep. Sure they get some of the greatest minds but there work is not pro social in the slightest. Some say evil which I would agree to those sentiments.
His disclaimer about the podcast being separate from his work at Stanford was a way for him to say to Stanford, “Don’t come after me, this is separate work, my views are my own, my earnings are my own.”, and at the same time say to everyone watching, “Hey, I’m a Stanford professor so you can trust me!” It really does tarnish their reputation.
Stanford says what he is allowed to say. He said they didn’t allow to talk about the cough. It’s all a scam. This materialistic, atomistic, reductionist „science“ is all a scam. He's probably making a few million a year, but still not enough to stop reaching for another, even at the expense of credibility and... scientific integrity. Pathetic.
@@haroldpierre1726 ......is that worth your credibility and scientific integrity? Intellectuals usually value their smarts way more than material things. Maybe Humberman really isn't a scientist, more of a salesman

I purchased some Roka prescription photochromic glasses probably based on recommendations I heard from him and others. They are expensive, but probably the best glasses I’ve ever owned. I run and lift weights in them and they rarely fall off my face. I got a small crack in them after a year and Roka sent me a new pair for free, they accidentally sent me ones without high index lenses and so they sent me a third pair. So now I have 3 frames, one in perfect condition, one with a small crack, and one with thick lenses. Perhaps I only like them because of the endorsements and because I paid too much for them and so now I have a self confirmation bias, and I don’t have any experience with the blue blocking lenses, but just thought that I would share my experience with Roka in general.
I first heard about Huberman in 2023 and every video I saw, he was just rambling on with such confidence, I immediately knew he had an agenda that he was trying to push. His constant mentioning of Stanford, and me personally knowing the managing director of the Stanford Management Company, just immediately made me think that guy went from scientist to sellout. And I personally advocate for him to be removed from the institution ever since. Science and hugely successful (in the sense of being monetized) influencers rarely mix well together. Doctor Mike (aside from his ventures into entertainment like influencer boxing etc, he is genuinely still working as a doctor and promoting valid science and doesn't hesitate to correct himself if he was wrong), and Doctor Mike Israetel are among the only ones I still have faith in here on RUclips. Let's hope they don't prove us wrong in the future.
I'm very unhappy to admit that I spent $200 + shipping + customs (I'm not from US) for Huberman's 'sleep stack' (I have sleep apnea so any sleep quality improvement would be HUGE for me) and I regret to announce it had 0 (ZERO) effect on my sleep.
You're probably doing something wrong that is in it's core very very simple, like drinking caffeine, watching screens too late or not getting sunlight in the morning... What I don't get, is why does anyone take these ad reads and sponsorship deals seriously? I don't pay any attention to them one way or the other, it wouldn't even cross my mind to buy something based on an ad or an endorsement. These ads are just things to skip for me and a source of income for the author What I am interested in, is the actual content, and this video didn't touch it at all. I think as an overview his videos are decent, and I wish someone would do a detailed critical analysis of them disregarding anything else
I agree with your comment. But what I get from this video is that Andrew Hubermans sponsorships also changes the way he communicates his evidence based science outside of this ad readings. Which I cannot confirm because I stopped listening to Huberman a long time ago. Not because of all the sponsorships thing but because I am only interested in some topics and have no interest in watching all the other stuff.
@KnarfMetmohn I dunno, I watched the video and didn't see any definitive claims or examples of this. I _really_ don't care how wealthy Huberman is or how he peddles his status and name. That's his deal. To me he's one of many interchangeable sources and it would be useful to know if I have to check him a bit more carefully in the future. This video has some weird vibes as if I could've had faith in him as my guru and thus I should care about his life and income and personality etc and decide if he is good enough to be my guru. But that's a silly approach from the ground up, no one should have that position
Agree 100%. This is just YT creator drama and jealousy. I can think of thousands more important conflicts of interests, corrupt science institutions, and many more egregious grifters, all of which have a much greater and more direct impact on the people in this guy’s audience. This video doesn’t even need to be made. It’s like it’s for teens or something. Something about it desperate, jealous, and a little obsessed. Cringe is the word I’m looking for. Cringe, but with a tinge of gay. That’s it.
The best part is that Huberman won't let attention grabbing videos and content against him stop what he does. He offers free education and information to the whole world. Yet people who talk shit about him are probably only capable of watching similar clickbaity, negative press videos and posts as their dopamine addict brains can only do so much, let alone watching a 2 hour podcast with Huberman and a processor/doctor/scientist. This is the world we live in, but I thank Huberman for his free work for making the world better.
I knew something was off about this guy, when he talked like an expert about so many different topics. I guess we have an era where scammers turned influcencers/podcasters.
I was just reading a Harvard study that says otherwise. Just getting some guy that has read some conflicting data and did a study on how fast you fall asleep doesn’t make you flat out right. He fails to account for quality of sleep which is far more important. We’ve evolved to be adaptable, obviously you’d be able to fall asleep if you’re looking at a screen each night. Personally I know an hour before bed with just a candle vs phone fully dimmed is a staggering difference, even though the candle is a lot brighter. Also I’m sure you made a nice bit of money from this “shocking” video.
I think not only are we in late stage capitalism, I think we are also in late stage marketing, advertising, and mass scale grift. I'm ever the optimist. Thank you Scott.
There is no such thing as late stage capitalism. Rule of law, individual property rights, enforcement of contracts and small government will keep winning. But societies that replace economic freedom with coercion of government are definitely entering a stage of decline.
I think the fact that he is actively leveraging his reputation as an empirical science minded guy to deceive people in a targeted manner, two truths and a lie style is really what cooks his reputation. Even if he goes back on the straight and narrow, how can we ever trust him again? For all we know, he's just trying to set us up to be deceived again at some point.
It also affects Stanford's reputation to have a snake oil salesman on staff. He should be restrained from using the Stanford name in his private scam activities.

Scott, thanks for the video. It's truly sad to see one of my Stanford colleagues fall down this path, but as you hinted at (maybe inadvertently), perhaps this was always the way things were going to go for him. To answer the question you posed to the audience, no, I don't think there is anything Huberman can do at this point to regain his credibility - at least not among scientists and physicians. At this point, he is a PINO (professor in name only), and I don't think he's coming back from that reputation. Maybe he's ok with that. Maybe that was worth the $20m. But I think he should also be a warning case study for students about the irreversible reputational damage that can be caused by questionable sponsorships, and seeking fame and followers above all else.

Huberman could quite easily do something less scammy as a side promotion on his videos, or really just stick with his RUclips income to supplement his university salary and still be very well off.

Please thank you for this video tons of people in the US are science illiterate it’s so terrifying to me . I have even lost my own mom to these types of podcasts because she struggles with her image. I believe that part of this is the reason why trump got elected too because people are not educated on basic science and logic including civics
I don't care to defend Huberman, but just so others know this video is presenting this in a biased way. Huberman did say that blocking blue light isn't going to have a major effect because he said all light will keep you up. so now he made new glasses that claim to block all artificial light rather than just blue light. Now whether the glasses are effective or not, that's another question. But he didn't change his opinion on the topic, which this video claims he did and isn't true.
The marketing might imply that, but it doesn't actually make that claim. The Roka glasses are designed to block short wavelength light (blue & green), not "all artificial light". Artificial light can come in any color.
I love someone like you to challenge big youtube sciencey personality like Huberman. I hope you continue your work because I think you are a great equalizer and lessen the hype for those sciencey people.
These people are becoming increasingly dangerous because they use science as a way and a “cover” to gain fame and money. If you criticize them, you’ll receive hundreds of angry comments, much like criticizing the church in the Middle Ages.

He’s a joke. I bought into his bs. I realized he’s full of shit around 2021/2022. He fear mongers for money which is the lowest thing anyone can do imo. Scare people and sell them a solution. The worst part is he makes himself seem like mother Theresa “I just want to help people with my podcast that’s geared towards rich neurotics”. Nothing wrong with making money but don’t mask as if you’re a Saint doing God’s work. I honestly think his popularity has to with his looks more than him actually being interesting or helpful. His protocols are ridiculous and not realistic for the majority of the population. Again his podcast is geared for the privileged folks who can afford a cold plunge etc. He’s just so cringey.
It’s interesting to me that a lot of people will follow people because of their looks. However, they are not considered great looking. Instead most of us are average at best. We need to start supporting each other.
90% of his viewers are men so it’s not his looks. He looks slightly above average. He is interesting to listen to that’s why he has followers. Looks alone will not carry you to RUclips fame unless you are a really hot girl.
Back in the early 90s I got my favourite sunglasses, with their orange lenses. If your feeling a bit down outside on a dull day a long way from summer, put on orange lenses and you'll be in summer again. They just make everything look sunny. Real gives you a warm feeling and a reminder of how summer makes you feel.
I am both an engineer and scientist and have been calling Huberman out for the past four years because he is no different than any other YT grifter. He has many personal and professional accomplishments and a reputation to match and he's thrown it away imo for financial gain. Anyone can start an AG1 company - they use generic ingredients found in every other similar product manufactured at the same factories. Same with the coffee, supplements, shirts, glasses, etc. It's nothing fancy, it's not going to make any life-altering changes to your health. Wow so dangerous, such exposer. He really saved me from destruction. We need papa Scott and mama Taylor to tell us how and what to think. They’re the experts, they both wrote books!
Same, I tried to watch him despite it but he’s all car salesmen. He is way too definitive about everything when in reality most studies aren’t conclusive and need more evidence from other studies and methodologies.
What changed was he did a podcast with Jack Kruse which changed his mind. Jack Kruse even mentioned on another podcast that Huberman didn’t know the deep science regarding blue light. Jack Kruse has plenty of studies and evidence that blue blocking glasses indeed work you have to find the brand that provides testing results.
If the issue is that blue light from screens doesn't emit enough luminosity to change anything then no glasses matter. It has nothing to do with the width of the spectrum. Just the lux.
@@sgcarney if you haven't listened to the Tetragrammaton podcast he did with neurosurgeon Jack Kruse and Rick Rubin about a year ago, I would suggest researching and listening to it. They sat down over two days and about 6 hours of podcasting, and that might give you some idea as to what happened to his views on the light spectrum, among other things. It doesn't have to do with lux, it has to do with wavelength. He and Peter Attia both have had some interesting encounters with Jack and it seems to have changed the way they view certain things. Yes, Jack can seem arrogant, but I, and apparently Huberman and others in the field, think he's also on to something.
If your circadium rhytms are off, you can go camping in nature without phone, watch nor any streetlights in sight. Do this for a week. Your wake-sleep systems now will all be reset automatically by nature.
You are 100% correct. Get out in the woods or mountains or plains or hills away from city noise and light. Pitch a tent. Unroll your sleeping bag. Start a nice calming camp fire. Eat a steak or a fresh trout and watch the stars for a while. Then crawl into your bag and listen to the wildlife that's nocturnal and just enjoy the fresh air and you will get the best sleep of you life. It's amazing when we get away from the city. Man I hate the fact Huberman sold out. I liked the guy.
What?? He hasn't changed his stance on blue light AT ALL since he started talking about it. He has always said that blue wakes you up, so you should avoid it at night and get it in the morning. You are weird.
Bruh what?! Did you even watch the video? He said before that blue light glasses are useless, then he came out with his own blue light blocking glasses. Pay attention!!!!
I don't need to watch this video when I've consumed the entirety of Huberman's catalogue. I know exactly what he says about blue light, and he's been completely consistent on it. There's plenty I disagree with Huberman on, but you don't know what his claims are at all..
Huberman referring to blue blocking glasses: "...but you don't need them, and even if you do wear them, you will find that if lights are very bright, it doesn't matter if it's a blue light, a yellow light, or a red light, those bright lights will wake up your brain and body." Huberman Lab Podcast #84 @ 57:35 He's very clear that blue light in particular isn't what wakes you, it's just bright lights of any color.
I don't really care about Huberman's integrity, since I believe it's everyone's own duty to be sceptic about their sources, no matter how studied or well spoken. I thank you though for this video which brings all the bits and pieces together to point out some issues which are surely important to many people. What I would really like to know though is how much you Scott Carney, talked to Huberman about it? If you know him for so long, I would expect you to have some kind of conversation with him about the topic before making the video. And if not, then why not? All the best to you and thank you for your work!
Exactly. I pretty much assume the exact opposite of whatever she’s about and it’s served me well for almost a decade now. Probably 7 years at least! I just check in w her from time to time to see what she’s saying, and then I assume the opposite, and I’m batting .1000. It’s lazy, but it’s so efficient.
Not sure how effective these red light glasses are, but 2 things. I definitely get benefits from night driving glasses and my eyes are not that tired when using them after dark. Second I have huge benefits from using red light therapy. There are many researches proving it works. My skin is way firmer, I got rid of my shoulder pain I had from car accident and I am sleeping way better. As for AH my biggest off put was his advertisement of AG1. I noticed that many more youtubers advertise these glasses and also some red light lamps, which are just ridiculously priced. I still enjoy his content becasues he is inviting lot of good people with great info.
Huberman shouldn't take credit for those things. Many people talk about them. There is some benefits to the glasses (best to use during day) & red light therapy but they're not a cure all for everything. really annoying when people say "but I did this & it helped" to try to give an obvious grifter credibility.
@@GrapeCheez2 I said, I don't know if there is any benefits of the glasses as I never used them. I also didn't say I got red light therapy because of him (I read researches myself). I understand they get their money from affiliate links and from sponsorship, but that doesn't mean I have to get them, especially that prices for their items are ridiculous.
I agree with the red light therapy, it helps me sleep so well. I even added a red light bulb in my lamp for the evening. It just feels cozy and relaxing

Huberman has his flaws. He likes to make wide inferences based on very specific biological mechanisms, and often relies on a "common sense" - which is categorically wrong when you talk about science and knowledge. However, he almost singlehandedly started off the trend of long format scientific channels on youtube and we should all be very grateful. The episodes he's done lately have shifted focus on living a healthy, good life, emotional health and dealing with difficult situations, and they are full of incredibly helpful notions and tips. I will therefore forgive him for being sponsored by a glasses company. Also I don't believe it contradicts anything he ever said - I've watched hundreds of hours and he ever only criticised them when worn all day, but advocated nighttime use repeatedly. Also comparing any quality product to what you can find on Temu - what a ridiculous thing to do. Lost all respect there.
Yeah, bringing her on was a really stupid decision. She's the prototypical ideologically motivated liar. That said, Huberman obviously is lying to sell the blue light glasses and does not believe what he is saying.

Thanks for sharing this! I myself, was a giant Huberman fan, particularly on the sleep stuff since I was struggling with it at the time. It's sad, because much of his advice seemed to be backed by science (waking and getting sunlight early to wake up the body, not eating too late in the evening so the pancreas still isn't working to break down sugars, etc.). The blue light glasses thing comes as a surprise to me, since I hadn't seen his content in a year or more. I hope you are able to maintain your journalistic integrity as well! Staying free of sponsors (or at least being transparent about conflicts of interest) will help that.
My understanding is that the "reciprocity" principle of social psychology pretty much guarantees that once someone starts taking sponsorships, they will feel the need to reciprocate to those sponsors by giving them some measure of leeway that they wouldn't give others. Do you know if this has been studies directly?

I think there’s a confusion. He’s always said blocking blue light all day long wouldn’t help, except only before bedtime, which it’s better to reduce it and use red light. He also states using any type of screen light before bedtime is not good even if we block the blue light. I don’t see any contradictions
27:27 did you just say IRregardless?! There’s goes all your credibility…kidding! Thank you for this. Huberman has disappointed like a family member. No wonder he put Jordan Peterson on his show.
From my understanding....Blue light does not "mess with sleep" ((is false)) it messes with the circadian rhythm hormone called melatonin which in-turn effects quality of sleep and other aspects of life. Sleep Hygiene states no blue lights at night (~2hrs before bedtime). Yes people can fall asleep with caffeine or antihistamines (and even with blue light) in their system these cause exhaustion which is not going to garner the quality sleep we all need. We should not just be doing subjective studies on falling asleep/staying asleep and quality. Bio-markers are another valuable way to tell if there are any adverse effects to this light at night; testing cortisol/adrenalin, growth hormone and melatonin to name a few...
Melatonin is light sensitive. It falls apart. So not just the color but also the brightness… When I dim my lights at night I sleep much better. The bathroom has a red nightlight, that makes a noticeable difference as well for me
A number of those studies testing screen light - with or without BB glasses - have also tested melatonin. In these studies, melatonin only got suppressed if you preceded the screen light exposure with darkness (it was part of the study protocols). But when there is no darkness, when people were exposed to continuous bright light before screen use, melatonin wasn't significantly suppressed - so IRL, melatonin suppression is unlikely to be due to screen light. Besides, internal levels of melatonin and falling asleep are more disconnected than people think. And melatonin from the pineal glad accounts for about 5% of the body's total amount of melatonin.

That's an interesting way to give yourself wiggle room, both morally and legally...

His disclaimer about the podcast being separate from his work at Stanford was a way for him to say to Stanford, “Don’t come after me, this is separate work, my views are my own, my earnings are my own.”, and at the same time say to everyone watching, “Hey, I’m a Stanford professor so you can trust me!”

Now whether the glasses are effective or not, that's another question. But he didn't change his opinion on the topic, which this video claims he did and isn't true.
@@Tal-di4rc so happy someone else noticed it too !!
The marketing might imply that, but it doesn't actually make that claim. The Roka glasses are designed to block short wavelength light (blue & green), not "all artificial light". Artificial light can come in any color.

@ not sure! You do great research maybe you can find something on Jack Kruse.
@@sgcarney Who is sitting in a completely dark room with only screens?
No. It has to do with lux and wavelength. That’s the clear signal from the research. And Huberman used to agree…until he got a sponsorship.

Huberman referring to blue blocking glasses: "...but you don't need them, and even if you do wear them, you will find that if lights are very bright, it doesn't matter if it's a blue light, a yellow light, or a red light, those bright lights will wake up your brain and body." Huberman Lab Podcast #84 @ 57:35
He's very clear that blue light in particular isn't what wakes you, it's just bright lights of any color.

Never noticed any bad effects from antihistamines when still working shifts.
Which is covered in Huberman's sleep episodes.
You seem to have miscalculated his adsense earnings. Should be closer to $2M not 20
