The winner of the men’s fixed final (me) used 47x22. My friend Josef, who finished second in the final, rode 47x20. He crushed me in our semi-final, but since we finished 1st and 2nd we both made the final. We were both also on SPDSL road pedals. He missed his clip-in at the start of the final otherwise he likely would have won the whole thing. I did not miss.
@@percyfaith11 smallest gear on my first bike was 42x19. Stupid really. Now it’s 34x27. I have a 21% climb near me and the 34x27 is way too big for that climb. :-
@@nonfictionone Just upgraded my touring bike to 39:34 low gear. Rode it up a nasty hill near my house, that rises 300 ft. with much of it at 23% - and a peak grade of 28%. Not much fun, but at least I came away with the elevation/grade data for it. That was only the second time I'd attempted the hill. The first was when I was much younger, and with a 39:27 low gear. My Achilles tendons were sore for two days afterwards.
No joke. I once had a 1962 Beetle. The owner's manual was actually useful, with specs like the maximum grade it could climb in each gear. IIRC, first gear could handle 21%, but not second. And yes, you'd need to really rev it up in first gear to go faster than these cyclists.
These mission crit vids are awesome! Welcome! Been riding fixed gear for a decade! Don’t care if I get heat for this but I think it’s the purest form of cycling your the engine and brakes! 🙅🏽♂️
Starting to become a huge fan of VC. I have to be honest though, the first time the algorithm suggested one of your videos, i kind of thought that you'd be a big douche. Man how wrong i was. Love the channel, content, creativity, etc. Go get'em VC!!!
Such a pleasure to meet you at the Bay Climb. Good luck to you and your team racing at Lion's Den this weekend. Ima be there so I can't wait see you over there.
bien ahiiiii, fixed gear es un camino de ida, y estoy totalmente de acuerdo, la comunidad del piñon fijo es de lo mejor que hay en el mundo de la bici, camaraderia y cero ego¡¡¡¡
Travis has been an excellent addition to your channel, adding the extra video clips is turning up your vblogs to pro quality! I 2nd the suggestion for the Pittsburg Dirty Dozen, insane!
Loving the fixie content! It's a bit of a mindf*ck to learn, but, once it clicks, it's the most fun kind of riding. To me, riding a fixed gear requires more respect for the machine.
yeah I used to messenger in SF in mid 90s for 5 years. I rode a road bike because I was out there for money but did ride around on fixed gear on weekends. Good fun. Those hills are brutal ;)
I have a fixie that I ride as a SS. I felt I'm have pretty strong legs from my mountain bike which made my SS riding so much easier. Took a bike I was selling, converted it back to fixie and rode it around in front of my house. Tried to slow down (not skid, slow down) and the crank kicked me up and forward. Yeah, I'll stick with my SS. They are fun to ride, both fixie and SS because you don't have to think about going up or down in gears in relation to the hills, flats, stops, starts. You just get on and pedal. I love SS so much, I converted my cheaper mountain bike to a SS and just ride around town hopping curbs, cutting across fields, taking stair sets and rolling down grass/dirt/gravel hills. Seeing these SF vids is making me want to take a quick lap around my neighborhood even though I should be cleaning my house.
So much fun, Tyler, glad you made the show with your flying burrito brother. And I'd like to ride that, too, one of these days, tho' I fear I'd do about as well as I did as a Cub Scout with my little car in the Pinewood Derby at Clarendon Elementary in the '60s. And they didn't even have participation ribbons back then.
The thing with track bikes is there’s really nowhere to hide, you either got it or you don’t. It really forces you to push through walls and find a rhythm with the bike. A road bike will always be more fun but a track bike is way more rewarding. 43 years old and still ride a brakeless track bike daily in Seattle!
Great effort Tyler. You should come and ride some of the UK hill climbs next year. Same crazy vibe, you can ride a fixed and get cheered up an insanely steep hill by people you don’t know! The weather might not be as warm as California though…..
The new VC Eliel kit is sick. I'm actually not a fan of flannel but the trees design is great. I only wish there was a Doom trees jersey in red like the bibs, jacket and vest. But I can see the idea was to mix and match.
Man, loved the last 2 videos. My fixie was stolen back in March and then I "upgraded" to a road bike. I've put in about 2k miles on road but I still want to build a proper fixed gear because it was so much fun.
Tyler, grab some Crank Brothers Candy pedals for doing future events of this sort where clipping in is essential. I have raced XC MB and as you know starts are super important. MB pedals are the key to fast starts.
You need different pedals, speedplay or other similar to clip-in pedals. And you can put power down on a speedplay whilst still unclipped... I'm usually off the front at the start due to being able to clip in fast with speedplays :)
SPD on all the bikes bro. On my roadbike i use SPD pedels with a platform, easy to clip in, you can walk on the MTB shoes and the platform SPD combo makes for a very stable connection. 👌
Nice set of videos on the fixed gear races. I thought about what you said in the end about the fixed gear community and the vibe. What's interesting is that the same thing happens in the endurance community and gravel community - although now that the UCI is involved in gravel that'll probably change. My theory is that when riding your bike becomes a "job" or "career" as it does in road racing, that's when you loose the community vibe. Think about it - what's on the line with the fixed gear race and hill climb? What are the stakes? Nothing really. With road racing you might loose your contract, which is your job and livelihood, when you don't perform. Or even if you do perform there might be political stuff within the team you have to deal with. With these events like the fixed gear series it's just fun and everything else is a bonus. Bikes for business or bikes for fun - you can have both but what's your priority? The answer determines the vibe.
Hey dude really liking the videos. One suggestion. Give SPD pedals a try, there is not much of a weight/aero loss. Both sides clip in so you will not have these issues. Just an idea 🙂
we have a big Hill Climb calendar in the Autumn over in the UK and those events can be amazing, loads of camaraderie, and and all out good time, not on Fixies though, that would be just brutal
