I learned with a front brake, using the front brake with just a quick tap will shift the weight to the front. This allowed me to skid just that little bit easier . Once I got used to where it was best to position my body and pull and push on the pedals it was easier for me to transition into not using my front brake. This may or may not work for you but worth a try .

Just as long as youre not grabbing a fist full brake, it'll allow a person learning what the skidding feels like under their feet , (for many the only skids they've done is through the brake calipers) which will in turn translate into confidence. Confidence will allow you learn proper technique. Technique will in turn lead to easier skids and more effortless braking.
This is pretty much a quick way to learn how to drift cars as well so it makes sense! Especially when transitioning in a tandem just give a little tap on the breaks and you can switch sides of s drift pretty easily.

@@zanjisu actually I got hit by a taxi driver on Christmas eve... smacked into the ice hard and broke two bones in the arm and hurt the hip and bike... nobody helped me and the taxi driver went out kicking my bike on the street screaming at me to get that shit out of his way! reported it to the police with the taxi driver license plate and went to the x ray... the police here in Sweden do not care for a second about us... when I called back on Monday to the police who handled my case he only replied that he had cancelled my case even less than an hour from that it came in stating is just word against word and that was it of that... Happy Christmas for me! 🤷🏼♂️
Need to mention bringing your knees I'm towards the top tube. Makes a HUGE difference in leverage against your cranks. Most people don't realize this and try to do it with their legs in regular pedaling position and it doesn't work nearly as well and requires a lot more energy. Another thing, if you're thinking about going brakeless then you need to be sure to both have your stamina at peak and to learn to skid and stop with a minimum expenditure of effort. As it possible that you can become too tired to stop if you wear yourself out.
@@iron2valorant711 Are you legs just incredibly fucking jacked? Like so much so that they make you seem disproportionately heavy for your size and height? Because of not your just running too high of a gearing and your legs aren't strong enough to overcome the force of the rotation, no matter the technique. When you're riding a fixed gear bike, because of how big to small and small to big gear ratios work, the force the spinning wheel exerts on the cranks is much stronger than the force the cranks exert on the wheel. So as hard as it is to push a gearing that oversized, it's going to be even harder to skid on it. If you're trying to learn to skid, that gearing is only going to teach you how much knee surgeries cost. Lower the ratio a LOT, to like less than 75", then try it. Seriously, I'm saying this because I care. That's a ratio for experienced, strong legged pros on velodromes who have no intention of stopping in a hurry. Trying the top tube trick with that ratio will probably cause immediate, not just gradual damage to your knees and ankles.

For the first time ever I skid. Just wanted to show my gratitude because had it not been for this video I probably would’ve continued to ride without it. While skidding isn’t a total necessity, it has made cycling more fun and has given me something new to look forward to. So thank you.
finally figured out the timing the other day when at the skatepark by my house (think it was saturday morn) an now i can skid. been trying since 08 and nothing but have watched his a few times since you uploaded it so id say it helped the most along with a few other peoples but think your info was most helpful and more informative. nice to have the option came in handy on sunday since i went on my first PKE ride and it was nice to be able to do it. all i did to be able to do it now is i put more of my foot into my straps instead of just my toes now if i put the strap to the tongue area of my shoe it helps i wear size 13s so big boy feets.
I did have an accident, same like you, going downhill my foot popped up of the clipless, it is crazy how fast you get a high speed when this happen, I was bouncing with one foot... no time to reaction and BOOM, I flew over the street barrier some meters down towards a hill. You can see it on my last video "build it - break it". Maybe if I had seen this video before I would have never used clipless. I went back to the reliable straps after that.
To maximize tire life, choose a gear ratio that has ambidextrous skid patches, meaning an equal amount of skid patches when you skid with either foot being the dominant one forward. When you nail your first skid, you're going to be stoked and keep doing it, but my advice is take it easy. If you overdo it that first day and you don't have super strong legs, you will feel the pain for a few days. I also had a bad clipless experience pulling a skid with SPD's. One foot came out and I went flying off my bike. I wasn't wearing a helmet, but luckily I didn't hit my head. Just a bloody arm. The problem was not having the tension on my pedals high enough. Once I cranked the tension up, I haven't unclipped since. Basically, get the tension as tight as you can and still be able to unclip when you need to. Looking back though, I think I felt more confident overall skidding with straps. You don't have that fear of unclipping. That said, if you use SPD-SL's, then it won't be an issue, as your feet are basically glued to the pedals.
Me bro I've loved biking ever since I was a kid but my bike is kinda rusty and not that great tbh and my only joy out of it was becoming faster and faster on it. I'm a machine on the bike now I can probably compete if I condition myself for a few weeks but that's all. I looked up this video lots of time and I cant still do it Until today I figured out how. I think beginners tend to think that it is just pure leg strength to skid.(NO) Its really in the physics where u shift ur weight to the front so there is lesser friction on rearwheel hence easier to skid. I figured out that u must lean forward to initiate the skid. At first it feels odd getting into this position but once u get used to it, It Is very easy. Try to lean forward with ur crotch touching the stem. Next when ur In that position, Practice forcing up with strap foot and forcing backwards on open foot. THIS REALLY HELPED ME. Try to think of it like a horse kick but its constantly pushing it down. Basically ankles are 45 degress and open feet is pushing backwards ASHARD AS YOUCAN. And also there is also quite abit of arm strength to skid or else you will loose control and fall. I hope this helps :)

@@fernandoe7560 Actually it can be really important if you have a cog with an extremely low number of patches. You'll end up wearing it down extremely fast when learning because aside from having possible like 8 patches, only using one committed dominant foot means you're not getting the most out of that tire's surface area.
@@DeadBoysTwo but a beginner will most likely have stock gear ratios, 46 16, which aren't that bad for skidding. And only skidding with one foot doesnt affect the skid patches unless it's 1:1, which it wont be
@@fernandoe7560 I don't think 46/16 is really an industry standard though. I've never had a complete come with that gearing myself. Had weird ones like 40/18, 50/19, and so on but never a stock 46/16. That and there's no benchmark for a learning curve. I learned to skid by myself my first day on a fixed gear. So that's kind of a nebulas assumption for individual experiences. That said, I already had extremely strong legs from other athletic pursuits before hand, and I've never watched another person go from unable to skid to being able to, so person mileage may vary. But I've always believed that good habits and settings should be practiced as early as possible. Spend a few extra bucks, get a 17 or a 19, and save money on tires in the long run.

It took me a week to learn to skid and I didnt bust my tire until about 4 months later. So "for me" (hopefully this helps someone else) I "prepped"(began to brake and lift with both feet)on the down stroke after which my pedals "picked me up" to horizontal to where I was able to skid with my feet parallel to the ground. Note: car washes are WAY MORE slippery than you think
before watching this video I had no idea that balls to the stem skid could be seen as cringe, so now thanks to you I've learned how to skid properly or at least I don't put my balls on the stem anymore, thanks FOAD gang.
I built my fixed gear on my own, found an old frame (not too fat, cuz otherwise it looks kinda odd and not fixie like), bought new tires and a chain, 80 bucks and i had a fully working fixie
@@PermanentMerka Oh, it definitely requires a certain minimum of leg strength but technique is important too. I've learned that it really is just about pulling as hard as you can with your front foot. If you do it right you can even skid in the saddle. What I do is just raise my butt a little so that my weight is on the pedals and push back on the bars while stopping the pedals. It's important that you keep your arms tense as well as the legs.
@@PermanentMerka So, in short, straps are a necessity. I spent my first few months riding without any foot retention as I was saving up for some (I hadn't factored the cost of straps in the bike budget). It's suuuper sketchy and frankly not as much fun. I bet it isn't as bad if you have brakes, but I ride brakeless, so... Yea I needed straps. Without them, you're so hyper focused on being able to stop, it's nigh impossible to enjoy the ride. On another note, skidding without staps is very literally impossible unless you slam your crotch to the stem as shown in the video, or put your front foot under the pedal (as I did). Both these methods are incredibly dangerous and the underpedal one doesn't always work as sometimes your foot will just slip out from underneath it and that almost always ends horribly. It also doesn't work at higher speeds for obvious reasons. On a positive note, my legs are beautifully toned from the amount of effort I had to put into backpedaling. So yea, straps (or any other kind of foot retention) is highly recommended. It's worth the investment.
I tried fixed gear for first time yesterday and I was surprised how I coudnt pedel backwards to skid or break. The power of the pedals moving forward beats me to keep going forward. I will try these tips and see how it goes.
I still haven’t learned how to discount well, but I would like to. I can do a skid stop even at speeds up to 30, after 30 I simply don’t have the strength or the technique, I don’t know what I don’t have, but the fix spins me, I can’t hold the connecting rods at all without hanging from the handlebars, much less in the saddle, it’s stupidly stronger me. What is the different between drifring and skidding? I used to drift a lot with my "normal" bike( or at least we called it so). How much different is it from just braking and turning?
You make it look really easy but no matter how hard I push my feet I can't get the chainring to stop. It's momentum overcomes me. I have YNOT straps and have followed your tutorial. Do I really have to be riding without sitting on my seat to brake fast?
Is it possible that some fixies, for whatever reason, gear ratio or whatever, can't skid? At first I thought it was just lack of practice but I just can't even come close to stopping the pedals at all, try as I might. I'm not a small dude, I have strong legs, at least in the gym.

I started using bullhorns on my fixie and lemme tell you i highly recommend it. It helps me skid better than any other bar!
I use dropbars in my throne and I seem to be doing fine
Putting your weight over the front wheel allows for fishtails and sick skids and drifts :)

So "for me" (hopefully this helps someone else) I "prepped"(began to brake and lift with both feet)on the down stroke after which my pedals "picked me up" to horizontal to where I was able to skid with my feet parallel to the ground. Note: car washes are WAY MORE slippery than you think

I built my fixed gear on my own, found an old frame (not too fat, cuz otherwise it looks kinda odd and not fixie like), bought new tires and a chain, 80 bucks and i had a fully working fixie

I learned to skid without retention at first. When I got my first pair of straps I went through a tire within a few hours
You think you need strong legs or just pure technique?
@@PermanentMerka Oh, it definitely requires a certain minimum of leg strength but technique is important too. I've learned that it really is just about pulling as hard as you can with your front foot. If you do it right you can even skid in the saddle.
What I do is just raise my butt a little so that my weight is on the pedals and push back on the bars while stopping the pedals. It's important that you keep your arms tense as well as the legs.

@@PermanentMerka So, in short, straps are a necessity. I spent my first few months riding without any foot retention as I was saving up for some (I hadn't factored the cost of straps in the bike budget). It's suuuper sketchy and frankly not as much fun. I bet it isn't as bad if you have brakes, but I ride brakeless, so... Yea I needed straps. Without them, you're so hyper focused on being able to stop, it's nigh impossible to enjoy the ride.
On another note, skidding without staps is very literally impossible unless you slam your crotch to the stem as shown in the video, or put your front foot under the pedal (as I did). Both these methods are incredibly dangerous and the underpedal one doesn't always work as sometimes your foot will just slip out from underneath it and that almost always ends horribly. It also doesn't work at higher speeds for obvious reasons. On a positive note, my legs are beautifully toned from the amount of effort I had to put into backpedaling.
So yea, straps (or any other kind of foot retention) is highly recommended. It's worth the investment.

I tried fixed gear for first time yesterday and I was surprised how I coudnt pedel backwards to skid or break. The power of the pedals moving forward beats me to keep going forward. I will try these tips and see how it goes.
I still haven’t learned how to discount well, but I would like to. I can do a skid stop even at speeds up to 30, after 30 I simply don’t have the strength or the technique, I don’t know what I don’t have, but the fix spins me, I can’t hold the connecting rods at all without hanging from the handlebars, much less in the saddle, it’s stupidly stronger me. Gear 53\17 conti grand sport tires with good grip

You make it look really easy but no matter how hard I push my feet I can't get the chainring to stop. It's momentum overcomes me. I have YNOT straps and have followed your tutorial. Do I really have to be riding without sitting on my seat to brake fast?

How do you avoid getting leg soreness and bruises?
Is it possible that some fixies, for whatever reason, gear ratio or whatever, can't skid? At first I thought it was just lack of practice but I just can't even come close to stopping the pedals at all, try as I might. I'm not a small dude, I have strong legs, at least in the gym.
