This is so beautiful and im getting emotional watching this. My mom was a bike messenger in nyc in the 80s. She moved there from sweden in her early 20s, went to a courier called Elite Couriers on manhattan. Told them in broken english "i want to be a messenger". They all kinda looked at her at first and where like "whoooo is this blonde swedish chick with no experience wanting to become a messenger on manhattan??" Hahahah, but she got hired, made a name for herself as "thunder thighs nyqvist". She rode on a beautiful 60s orange Atala fixed gear that i still have. She passed away in cancer at 60 2 years ago this week. She woulda loved if i showed her this video today since this was her everyday hustle back in the day. With all the "YO YOs", the car-slapping and electric attitude that is needed for good city riding. Incredible. I cherish the stories she told me about it. love you mom. Rest in peace
There were a lot of unusual people in the biz, well pretty much everyone really. I was a courier in DC, and then a dispatcher. Everyone had an interesting story. Sometimes very interesting. Back then we were an elite corps, handling important documents, delivering food was something we would never stoop to :)
@prh123; hey I was a courier in dc too back in 97-2000. I rode bikes for National and Lazer couriers it was a lot of fun esp with all the suits stuck in their cubicles it felt real free to just ride all day
You mean disrespect. Car door should've been opened right as they were getting ready to blow through the middle of an intersection. Never mind the fact it was f*****g red light.
@@Phil-pq4ks That was a bad move even from a cutting through traffic point of view, she should have cut to the left side of the car especially since she already noticed where the car was going to move early on. Had that car had windows up and blasting music he would not have heard her cute little screams and hit her.
She's free to ride her bike how she wants, but yelling at cars and pedestrians who had the right of way is just a bad look when she's actually the traffic hazard. Crazy.
Thanks. Awesome ride! I lived in Brooklyn, I raced my bike for Kissena. Now, I am recovering from a stroke.( I lived) I am hoping to build a fixie, my left hand is paralyzed, can’t brake!
Would love an interview with these riders explaining how they learned to ride like that and the philosophy, plus what they are thinking when riding. How they determine "intent" to the moving objects around them.
From what I interpret after watching bike messenger documentaries, they rely on visual and audible cues of their surroundings to determine the best possible route. It gets difficult for them if people are moving unpredictably.
These videos really make it clear that if we didn't have all the hazards from cars, and all the stops required by car-infrastructure (like stop-lights), we could fly through the city on bikes at speeds much faster than what any of the cars can do. All that traffic at intersections, but you guys just flow right through.
Then we have to make sure it's not like biking or mo-pedding via Ho Chi Mihn City in Vietnam. Now THAT is wild! No lights, everyone has right of way, and NO ONE looks over their shoulder.
Cool video but you gotta be a little more careful. You almost wiped out because you decided to swing across traffic when some car that was merging into the turning lane didn't see you. As a Chicago bicyclist, I wish you luck but damn. You're the reason why a lot of people hate us.
8:00 - 8:52 The camera movement/tracing here is so impressive that combined with the music it creates the illusion that she is the main character in a game while everyone else including the cars, are NPCs. When I first saw it, it felt surreal at times. That lady with the box seems to be programmed to always be there whenever you fail the mission. LOL
Sorry - but that's why so many people don't like us bike riders. Zooming through the streets is life. But consequentely running over red lights, almost crashing into people and get some close calls - that's just bullshit. You lucky, you still healthy.
I like the part where you weave in and out of the construction zone while you cut off the other vehicles on the road. Also the part where you ran 2 redlights in a row just after failing to yield to multiple stop signs. It's really cool that if you ride a bike you can ignore all traffic laws and be an asshole to everyone else on the road and get away with it.
To be honest, I can't understand why people here describe their driving style as nice to look at. I would describe her driving style as aggressive, reckless and antisocial.
Agreed a the beginning she blows through a red light after a cab and in front of another vehicle then almost hits some women who is legally crossing at the crosswalk of a red light and she's like "WOW!" i mean wtf
I’ve never felt so immersed in a RUclips vid like this before! I’ve ended up feeling warm and relaxed inside even though I shouldn’t be as I’ve just witnessed someone take major risks on them busy streets! Unbelievable filming as well! Loved every second of it. ❤
She certainly has a strong pair of legs, great rider looked fun ride, reminded me of when I was a boy we rode like that everywhere and we were total hazards but we didn't care we thought we were immortal and we just had fun riding as fast as we could! Happy happy days, now I'm 72 I don't ride like that anymore I still have very strong legs but more intelligence these days ❤😂
Yeah reckless. And they give all cyclists a bad reputation. I get it when you don’t come to a complete stop at a red light. But to just blow pass one is asking to be hit. And yelling at pedestrians when you’re supposed to give them the right of way. Doesn’t help
Damn yo. I used to ride an original Fuji Feather that was nicknamed, "Paperclip." I stopped riding it cuz I'd ride dangerously. Didn't stop for red lights, wove in and out of traffic just like this woman. I thought I had a death wish or something but now I see fixies just make you wanna ride and not stop.
Dang, y'all have WAY MORE trust in people in cars than I do! Holy shit, that was awesome...and crazy. But I know that's how you roll in NYC. I can't imagine doing it!
If I were living back in BK right now I'd be rocking a motorcycle hands down. Small displacement, relatively slow bike just to buzz around ; ) Makes noise, easily noticed, better mobility IMHO. Scooter or moped would suffice too I suppose.
Amazing ride video. Love the “Yo!” And apology to the guy in the crosswalk. I was cheering for you to catch up to the jerk in the Range Rover that honked at you, but Union was destiny.
Must honestly sounds like she's ready to get into a tragic incident. The way she's blowing lights is pushing her towards that. Some of her moves are why people hate us.
Nice ride. This takes me back about 25 years to when I was living in Queens and riding the 4 boroughs (sorry Staten Island) was a regular, exhilarating, thrill! You learn to ride with and be a part of the flow of the traffic while simultaneously NOT being IN it. And when you've spent enough time on the bike that it becomes just an extension of your body...pffft...awesome feelings.
Well said... you're everywhere but you're not a part of it.... I still many years later will take my bike and head out after midnight on a warm summers night, gliding through the streets with lights off... You feel like Batman :)
I love it..but let's be honest, she's breaking so many rules and laws right about now..lol..Im a cyclist for 9years as well a driver for over 30years(I'm an old school Brooklyn head) so I understand both sides..but alot of cyclist like this break the rules, get hit and then call foul...im still bugged out how downtown Brooklyn changed..I hate the clutter and the "new" NYers..lol
It's called conservation of momentum. You're a sitting duck when you're standing still. The same people that complain about cyclists running reds will honk at you for not moving fast enough when the light turns green. Even though my bike has disk brakes, if I'm coming down a hill and the light changes, I'm gonna run the red. Panic braking would only bring me to a stop in the middle of the intersection anyways. Induction loops often don't pick up my bike. I've tried all the tricks: circling around the loop, moving my bottom bracket spindle back and forth over it. I've even waited like an idiot for 10 minutes for the lights to change, nothing I do will trigger it. I'll keep running reds until they fix the traffic lights.
She definitely rides like an asshole. I live in a different environment but I always stop at reds and keep to the shoulders most of the time. If I need to get in with traffic I'm able to do so and keep speed with them but I would never lane split and all this stuff.
@kennerjendall2449 lol..im an old Brooklyn head and i have to admit NY is soft nowadays..the Starbucks crew, back backers and hipsters(bohemian yuppies) gentrified NY..years ago you would of had a problem if you hit on someone's car..especially in the 80s and 90s..lol
This is just irresponsible. I love cycling through my city, but flying through red lights because you see a gap in traffic is no better than a car doing the same, and if you make a mistake, you've traumatized both yourself and the driver who didn't do anything wrong.

Used to have so much fun riding fixed like this in my city... Then I grew up and realized I was a douche who raged about cars not following traffic laws while I broke them constantly myself.
Cool ride but yelling and hitting cars when you're in the wrong is too much. If she would have got hit by that car it would have been her fault not the driver of the vehicle.
Love to see the sponsors supporting the channel and a sponsor video that's actually enjoyable to watch!

Not going to lie, Terry and his riding buddies make riding downtown anywhere look easy. Cutting through traffic like it’s nothing. Much respect.
Not to mention on track bikes without brakes.
How do they make break 😂
Much respect for disrespecting traffic rules and thus endangering others.

The music totally works.
Love her attitude ! Too much soft obedience kills the freedom.

running a bit of gear too

Exactly!
yeah for real, such a pretentiously ignorant community. riding in the road when half the video has a bike lane in it
tell me you're not from New York without telling me you're not from New york
How can a human+bike combination maxing out at 80kg or so be more of a hazard than >2000kg metal boxes?
When you ride in the city, your voice is your horn and it’s more effective than a bell, though less pleasant.
I’m impressed at all that cycling infrastructure. They didn’t have all of that when I was growing up.

Terry B and his hooligan friends: "I'll show you."

That would be sick

Yes... like a coffee shop ride.
To be fair though, Terry isn't posting all the mistakes/accidents that we don't see. It can't all be plain sailing

What a badass. I’ll ride down a mountain any day (and I’ve broken bones doing it), but this terrifies me
really captures how fixed feels, there’s brutality, chaos, beauty, and through it all so smooth. brave ride
The music added to her ride really sets the mood ☺️😮💨 had this playing while I was grinding for the 9-5
