One thing I might suggest from my experience in rebuilding after Hurricane Michael kind of wrecked everybody's homes, businesses and shops is that if you want lighting that hugs the ceiling without hanging down into your work area, go with the four tube LED fixtures. Those things put out a phenomenal amount of light and use very little electricity. Since I am retired and no long need a big shop but just one to handle light maintenance, I installed two sets and it is like daylight in that building. Oh, and they are almost bullet proof! One of my outbuildings was crushed when a big oak tree fell on it during the storm. I took the LED fixtures down as I was attempting to salvage anything I could from the wrecked building. One of the lights was okay but the other was bent up pretty badly and full of water. With normal fluorescent lighting that is an automatic death sentence for them. I reshaped the housing, dried the fixture out and reinstalled the lights in my rebuilt building. I can't tell which light is which as both came on immediately and work just like they always did. Just an idea for those trying to get maximum light with minimum operating expense while saving overhead space.

If you haven't solved your lighting problem yet or if you did and just left the fluorescent fixtures in place, I highly recommend you change the bulbs to LED. There are replacement LEDs that work off the ballast in the fixtures and give over twice the lighting the fluorescent lamps produced. I changed mine out and love the end results. I know it is four months later but you never can tell, this might be just the information you needed.

Nice Building, it has plenty of potential. I am with you on the use of conduit, I even put plastic conduit under the concrete before I poured the flood. It made it a bunch easier to wire. I really doubt anyone would bother you if you kept it zoned ag, besides I bet the business tax rates would be much higher, I would check into that before I made any changes. And besides that you will probably be working on a tractor now and then. About 6 years ago I changed my lights to T8 then a year ago I changed them to the 4 ft leds, twice the light and 1/2 the electric used. I heat my shop, house and all my hot water with a taylor outside water stove, I have to cut a bunch of wood but the cost to operate it is very little.
    Cheers and Good Luck

    Hi Wes,
I am late to viewing this video. Congratulations on the move and the nice shop. You have probably already done the lighting, but if you haven't, I suggest an LED high bay light fixture(s).
Do a little research, they are approximately 3feet wide by 4feet long, about 8-10 of them placed & spaced well, and you will almost need a pair of sunglasses to work out there.
Very little power draw and no issues with -35degree cold weather.
    Thank you.

Ditch the silicone and use Locktite 515 gasket eliminator. It's an anaerobic urethane, will hold up to hot oil much better then silicone. It only seals in the presence of metal ions, so the squeeze out doesn't set and washes away with the oil -- ie. no chunks of silicone to break loose and clog things up.

    • @WatchWesWork
      @WatchWesWork  5 лет назад +1

That's not a good solution for this situation. The cover is just die cast aluminum and quite flimsy. The 515 would be OK for a nice flat machined surface. But, in that situation I would just use Permatex #2.

Maybe you can get a variance to be AG/commercial. I have had to get variances before not to hard usually. The Union Pacific BigBoy steam engine is coming to Missouri area maybe even closer to you. Does verizon work around you, you may get decent connection with a mifi instead of the microwave. Best of luck I have a Jeep grand cherokee that needs some work in a little while here, I think I am not to far and I like your work ethic. You are going to have a tough time showing your business and keeping your privacy. Also bringing the wife and kid into thing will get more subscribers if you are all comfortable with that. You may want to put motion lights around, I run 12 volt led off of a turbine and a couple batteries to chase the coyote off.

Late to the party on this video, but if you don't know already reference your home made Boring machine, @ 10:35 of this video, the Drill that you use , I believe is the same as what Abom79 has, got it from either his dad or grand-dad. Abom79 had it for year's and just this year 2019, he learned from a viewer, that the drill is REVERSIBLE, via the ring / collar located at the base of the trigger handle. If the drill hasn't been used in the reverse mode, in a very long time, the collar will be very hard to break loose. but it does turn (left/right) to set the forward / reverse direction of the drill. If I recall correctly, the collar should turn approx. 1/4 - 1/2 the dia. of the drill housing, in other words quite a bit. Also about mid turn is a neutral position, just so you know.
You can see Abom79 Mag-Drill SNS 276: This Old Trailer @ 26:19 of the video. ruclips.net/video/IG_FGgBydHo/видео.html . In this video, I'm guessing, he didn't yet learn about what his Mag-Drill can do. I'm just pointing this out, so you can clearly see the collar on his Mag-Drill.
    ruclips.net/video/guSG03tB2vQ/видео.html SNS 281: Installing Flexarm, Cast Iron Edges Nov 9, 2019, @ 8:34 - 9:49 Abom79 talks about learning that the Mag-Drill is REVERSIBLE.

problems you may encounter with those radiant heater , 1 burning a hole in the starter tube ( that`s the first tube coming out of the burner box ) the holes always burn a hole in the top of the tube were you can`t see it on the ground unless you turn off the lights. 2 combustion fan/ motor seizing( they run on bushings) , all one unit and it`s a throwaway . 3 the gas valve does not stay on , just the coil in the gas valve has bit the dust, the unit tries to light but does not. 4 the venting piping section rotting away due to moisture generated in that part of the heater . Best to have someone look at it see if running OK , than looking out for any changes in it`s operation .

Zoning. I'm not familiar with the US, but in my 60 yrs of various farm and commercial business experience in Canada, these ideas seem prudent to share. 1) If you don't touch the sh*t it won't stink. 2) Keep your head down and go for yards.

Talk to your utility, you may be able to get "Open-delta" 3-phase, which is common in rural areas, where they can make 3-phase power with only 2 hot legs available. A lot of irrigation pivots and grain driers are 3-phase and run on open-delta power. Else you'll have to make/borrow/steal a phase converter...

Not to worry, she's a tuff fork lift and she is like my Rottie, gentle till you try to hurt me and if another dog comes she's playful so got kicked out of that vicious club people worry about and natural babysitter.... but one drawback... constantly marks her territory. Might nickname her "forklift" as she is powerful and at seven years of age, still moving very well. Took a while but no marking in the house!! My other two lived till thirteen and would of lived longer but a renter who had a death wish, stole from me and so asked them to move and it took cops to do it but before they left, they poisoned both my dogs. I got one through it but... he died of loneliness. It took me over five years of tears to kind of get past it. They were my best friends. Hours of shenanigans they pulled. But time and a rescue helped me and she is so loyal to me. Since I feel close in a way to you I realised I don't really know about your family, other than seeing them today and you have a great family! I wouldn't blame you if you keep that to yourself as too many sick people that could try to harm and I would hurt anyone that hurt you or yours. I may be old but I think I come close to your size as I fight weight. I got back down from the two sixty plus to two high forties. At seventy two, thats just too much to move when crippled. So why move? Your definitely ahead of most mechanics that claim that title. I served in Nam from 66 to 70 and then tried to come home but they hateful things people called me sent to the wilds of alaska. I have had a good life and now live for the people that I find who are creative like yourself. Well I blew this one writing about me and that I apologize for!! We have chatted before and I find that you are a good and kind person. I will chat more later.

A shop in IL without in floor heat in this day and age? You must enjoy winter more than most people. Congrats on the shop!

Going through the same process now. Moving to a new place but no shop so having to build one. Also remodeling the old house so we can get it on the market asap. A lot of moving parts and money in the mix.

Quite the Garage Mahal you got there! Congrats on the (not so new in Sept. 2021) but new shop nonetheless!
Edit: hoo boy, that is one involved train set! It’s so photorealistic if the large vegetation and house weren’t present it’d be tough to tell the difference between this and a movie set! Way cool, so much work has gone into that installation and neat the owner opens his yard to the public for young kids like Lucas to ogle at! I used to have an OshKosh engineer’s overalls and hat around that age, I wish I still had it so I could send it to you if your son is into trains. He already has the coolest dad, I wasn’t even allowed to use the driveway to fix my car growing up and he’ll probably get to build a really cool car from an early age! Keep it up, love watching your content!

I never noticed or put two and two together about the move. I remember some of the old post, but the majority of my watching has been this new shop. It is amazing to see the transition from 10k to over 100k subscribers. It would be interesting to see a video (maybe you already have one) on how your business changed or improved over the year. Well done so far.

I made a move,I actually moved my dad's whole workshop to a new location, similar to this,so I know the feeling of putting everything in boxes, trucking it to another location and then the organizing starts all over again

Use metal rings over cover of compressor, bolts will hold it. Little late . But usefull in the future.

Floating slab garage building, good for the flat land. Forklifts tend to pee the bed a lot after a few years. You need a good old fashion shelf building to finish this. BTW if you still have voles in the spring and cannot find the little poison sticks for them that you stick in the ground after igniting it. They are great at ridding the little voles/moles.

    Hey Wes.
The good thing about moving is.
You have a chance to sort out the stuff you need ??
    Great workshop you have now.
Once you get everything sorted things will start happening for you.
Thanks for bringing us along on the workshop tour.
    Peter.

    Very cool new shop!
I would use the steps and put them outside of the "office". This way you can use a second floor as utility room and don't waste space on the first level, while you get another level for say having an electronics working station on the upper floor and maybe something like this sand cabinet in a dedicated room with ventilation to outside, to avoid having the dust spread around the shop.

Bonus me again; I watched the old shop one and then this one again. Your dream will come true cause of your value system. Also with only a two hour move, some loyal customers will follow as I know they did me. I am not going to bust your chops with a book. We think alike and stick to these values and your going to the one hundred mark and will get there before december! Thanks so much

I currently have a 20x40 shop. Bought the house thinking it'd be perfect for my side projects. Within 6 months it was full. If I can ever get the house renovations done going to buy or build a place with something the size of yours.

Permatex Right Stuff is the best silicone like sealer I've found, hands down. It's the only thing I will use on differential covers. I'm already regretting not using it on a twin transfer case setup in my truck that has a slow leak, but I also wanted to be able to get it apart again later. It doesn't like to separate easily at all.

Been watching for a while now, just subcribed for some reason i wasnt already. All of your tooling and machinery in the shop is my dream. I'm 30 right now and saving for a house. Hopefully with acreage so I can build a smaller version similar to your shop. Seems to me based on all your tooling that your way more than a mechanic. Anyways love your videos wes

Great shop there Wes, just remember, build it and they'll come. Looks like they got the office ass- backwards, office on bottom and excess storage above. Why did you put the lift there, it's got to be close to the tool boxes, no? Looks like junior is ready for a PegPrego John Deere soon, keep your eye out on trash pick-up days. Does the dog get the moles or is it just digging- up the yard. Update on the Toyota, don't tell us that it has a problem. Don't worry about that Quincy, it will out-live you, guaranteed, my buddy got one out of a gas station, it's going on 60yrs now. Bring the crawler in and you'll have 20K subscribers.

Well the tool boxes have wheels... And the dog does occasionally get a rodent. I'm sure the Quincy will outlive me. It's already 11 years my senior.

Harbor Freight is Great for many things; but not everything. You may want to do the merch thing. Big bucks. Maybe not. I think I commented before about that. Mustie1 was offered a TV spot. He said no. The more commercial you get, the less freedom you have. You will choose wisely. Don't sell your soul. You are a great man, Wes. I Love "Watching....You know. :-)
