I wasn't sad when Shireen died. It was the "typical" GoT moment, it felt wrong yes, but didn't hit me in the feels. Yet I cried like a baby listening to Davo's monologue. Liam Cunningham is a great actor, you could feel the pain the character was in, the anger, the need for justice. God my eyes are watering.
"Typical"? A typical GoT moment was about subverting expectations. Shireen's murder wasn't about subverting expectations, it was about being shocking for the sake of being shocking. That disgusting moment was the moment the series died.
Davos is usually a quitet voice of reason. HERE its one of the moments when he actually shouts in anger. An excellent show of how moved, how angry he is here, because of Shireens painful death.
What I love is how Davos was always against Melisandra. Always wanting Stannis to be rid of her. And now he, his daughter, his wife, and his army are gone because of their faith in her. Davos is one of the few characters that earned the right to see "I told you."
Shireen's death was heartbreaking. She was some of the few truly benevolent souls in Got. Perhaps it is fitting that the gods revived Jon when Shireen was sacrificed, one good soul for another. But it is also fitting that Stannis and everyone who allowed Shireen's death to happen met their end when they sacrificed her.
I feel bad for both of the characters here. Davos loved that princess like no over like his own child as stated by him and the red woman as stupid as burning her was knows what she did was wrong as you can see her sense of wrong doing on her characters face.
Also, it's worth adding that Melisandre's goal had always been to kill the White Walkers. She had the absolute best intentions when it came to Stannis and Shireen here, but ultimately her fanaticism to protect from evil misguided her into killing an innocent in vain. It's really tragic, in a way.
All of the buildup and investment in their relationship is what made this a powerful moment. The reading lessons, the visits to Davos while he was in a cell, the friendly banter between them is what made this such a tragedy for him. He was like a second father or beloved uncle.
Those shared journeys -- across land or through repeated scenes and dialogue -- in the earlier seasons made the show what it was. It fleshed out the characters and made them rounded, genuinely people with understandable motivations and coherent actions. The condensed final few seasons did away with that and tainted everything.
Thanks for uploading this, I too found this particular scene heart-wrenching and really stood out from the series in a uniquely powerful way. God speed Sir Davos, such a good character!
This was probably the angriest Davos has been in the entirety of the series. That last threat he makes - you can just see this volcanic rage erupting without containment.
Even as Jon was resurrected by her, it can be seen that at least Jon was not quick to side with her as Stannis was. Jon knew he was resurrected, that her connection to supernatural powers were the cause of it, but unlike Stannis, Jon was fighting in order to save lives, not to claim his "right" to the Throne.
This is a great scene. It's hard to watch, but I want to keep watching it. Liam Cunningham is being his character, and I found that to be true for the entire run of the series. That's the mark of a fantastic actor.
Its too bad they didn’t do anything with his character after this season as this scene was so powerful, while I didn’t like what they ultimately did with Stannis compared to his book counterpart, it made the set up to one off my favourite scenes.
