This song was the last song of the show, and as Kurt walked off stage MTVs production manager came up to him and implored him to go out for an encore, because the crowd was ecstatic.
Kurt brushed his hands away and reportedly told him. "As long as I live, I'll never top that. That was all that I had left"
Less than 6 months later he was gone. So very very haunting in hindsight.

The danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard wrote this in 1843: "What is a poet? An unhappy man who hides deep anguish in his heart, but whose lips are so formed that when the sigh and cry pass through them, it sounds like lovely music.... And people flock around the poet and say: 'Sing again soon' - that is: 'May new sufferings torment your soul but your lips be fashioned as before, for the cry would only frighten us, but the music, that is blissful.”

Leadbelly was a bluesman and a huge inspiration for Kurt. I think he chose this song to end the set because it was the perfect punctuation for the solemn and melancholy evening. Before this performance, Kurt nonchalantly asked the audience what they wanted to hear, but when they all shouted out Nirvana hits like Teen Spirit and other stuff, he basically said "fuck you all, this is the last song". You guys should really watch the whole night's performance; it is mind blowing. The candles and the lilies set an atmosphere that is very much akin to a funeral.

Someone has probably already stated it... but his very blank stare in the actual video at the end was actually him about ti pass out from how much stress he was exerting on his lungs and voice. Not from his tormented past but because he put everything into that rendition. Nowadays, no one sings like that to the point where he very nearly passed out because it is too taxing... but in his case, his insane talent paired with his skill created something that was never heard before and probably never will be heard in the future by any other performers

Just to clarify what some of the comments already said:
This song is called "In the Pines", sometimes referred to as "My Girl" or "Where Did You Sleep Last Night". Its a traditional song, probably a couple of centuries old, no one knows when exactly it was written and by whom. Lead Belly recorded his own bluesy version of this song some time in the 40s, and that version os probably the one Cobain heard and liked and decided to cover.

I was abusing heroin at the time...completely out of control. When he died, I related to him on a level that I still cannot explain. I was at my mom's passed out and my mom came into her bedroom because I was passed out on her then made, perfect bed She came in and told me "that Nirvana guy died" I got up, ran to the TV, Once I saw that it was confirmed and legit, I went outside, hid behind a garbage dumpster and chased the dragon, I remained zooted non stop for like the next week, Two weeks later my 3 dear friends at the time literally dragged me to the loony bin, then to rehab, all in one stint, I have not touched drugs since unless prescribed by my doc.

I believe personally, from the moment I first watched this the night it aired on MTV, at the end when Kurt was super intense singing and getting into it there was a point you could see him snap. Like something triggered inside of him and he truly went off the deep end. He picks his head up and looks at the camera with this fierce glare that just looked like something I had seen before from a friend who’s brain just turned to a deeply bad place. He would soon die and Kurt also soon died after this.

The day he died, or rather the day it was announced that he died, our school student service center got on the intercom and stated what happened over the loudspeaker, which was broadcast to the entire campus. I was a junior in high school and they suspended all classes for the rest of the second half of the day and sent us home... because like myself, everyone was devastated. I stopped in the doorway to the hallway and fell to my knees and was just lost for a moment. Then balled my eyes out. The rest of the week was just disbelief and denial. I've never gotten over it to this day, especially as a multi-instrumentalist myself.
I'm no conspiracy nut at all, but there are facts that don't and never have added up. No G.S.R. on him, 4x the lethal amount of heroin he ever had in his system, plus the shotgun that was found next to him at the scene raised questions to the investigators such as the fact that it was too long for him to have used it by himself (and in the near unconscious state he was in) so there was no way he could've even reached the trigger guard much less the trigger effectively to execute such an action...Unless the other possibility of assisted suicide (highly doubtful) is considered. But another wrench in the whole crazy scenario is that there were a few people he was closer with in the music industry that were genuine friends who wanted to help him get the help he needed to get rehabilitated and be better, of which he confided in. And they've all stated throughout the years that he was wanting a divorce from her in those last few months, because she was an enabler and he knew he was doomed if he couldn't at least get away. Corroborated statements of him seeing and being with another woman which ultimately made Courtney jealous, no fingerprints on the gun, the needle hole in his arm didn't match the needle in his kit, they had a prenup (which ironically, was her idea) all these details are suspicious red flags to this case.
Not to mention the fact that until the last year of his life, he never mentioned what was going on with her at that time or talked about her issues (or his own) that much, or her band (Hole) which many of us at that time didn't even know existed, but she gobbled up the spotlight any chance she could, to be noticed and tried making those awkward and uncomfortable situations and circumstances be about her, up until the tragedy. Then just a few months later that summer this new band exploded out of nowhere on the scene and is touring the world and in the spotlight, and the lead singer is Courtney!? So many things just never added up and the world has never had any closure.
There was even a man (El Duce) that confessed he was paid by her in the amount of $50,000 to help set all this up and make it look like what it ended up looking like. After his own interview, he ended up being found dead under "mysterious circumstances".
Kind of unrelated tidbit is that he ended up being apart of the "27 club" as well.
Highly recommend listening and reviewing the song by PRIMUS on Anti-Pop album titled "On the Coattails of A Deadman" with Tom Waits! I cry a little everytime I listen to it. The lyrics never mention his or her name, because Les Claypool is clever like that, but we all knew and know who he's referring to.
I have a suggestion for the 5th...All or mostly Nirvana day if doable.
Hope y'all and yours are safe, well, and healthy. I may not follow your religious devotion or path, but I love you guys and y'all keep it real.
    Shalom.

The flicker of his piercing blue eyes, whether from a moment of clarity, or from simply taking a breath after a sustained note, greatly impacted those of us watching that Unplugged episode in real time. I was 18 when I first heard Teen Spirit on the radio. I clearly remember saying to my friend: Did he just say "I feel stupid and contageous"? That was the beginning of it all. Nirvana weren't really the first "Grunge/Seattle Sound" band signed, but they were the first band to really hit and gain attention to that sound, and movement. They kinda drove me to look into Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and many more. Nirvana wasn't my fave of those bands-but you couldn't deny Kurt's talent, and appeal. I was 20 when he passed, and it really was a gut punch. His death was the first I'd really strongly experienced. It was like when Lennon was killed for my parents generation-Everyone remembers where they were when they heard. It was awful. Painful. Eye opening. It genuinely felt like our little "movement" was over. Everyone was somber. Man, it just plain sucked. I'm another who feels he did kill himself. Just listen to his lyrics...he sang about his pain and struggles often. Such a beautiful, immensely talented, yet tortured young man, and artist. Much respect. Rest easy Kurt Cobain, Andrew Wood, River Phoenix, Stephanie Sargent, Shannon Hoon, Bradley Nowell, Kristen Pfaff, Doug Hopkins, Jonathon Melvoin, John Saunders, Layne Staley, Mike Starr, Scott Weiland, Chris Cornell, and many other beautiful, talented, yet tormented souls from that generation. (Note just how many names are in that list. And that's not even all of them) They all brought us such amazing art and sound, and sadly were ALL lost to depression and drug abuse. Man...it's been rough. If you don't recognize some of those names, I strongly encourage you to check 'em out. It's worth your while. 🤘🏻✌🏼

Biggest/shocking entertainer/celebrity deaths in my lifetime were: Elvis - I was 8 yo but I just remember the entire country stopping and mourning, the other was John Lennon which shocked the world since he was gunned down and was a worldwide icon, and then Princess Diana since it was so unexpected and she was such an icon at the time. The next level was Cobain, Kobe, Whitney Houston, Robin Williams, Chris Farley, John Belushi, Tupac, Prince, Michael Jackson...sadly could go on and on. Another that personally shocked me since I was such a fan was when Steve Irwin (the crocodile hunter) died.

Leadbelly was a Blues legend that inspired many musicians in grunge like Cobain and his friend Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees. They recorded many Leadbelly songs together. Grunge has been referred to as the 'White man's Blues,' and the link between Grunge and Blues is exemplified here. The particular choice of this song has always been haunting, as Courtney was said to be having affairs on the side, and Cobain contacted his lawyer about wanting a divorce.

This is an old traditional song whose author is lost in time, Leadbelly didn't write it, but it is very probably based on an old Appalachian nursery rhyme. Yeah, those Appalachians were hardcore. There's another song of similar origin called "Down in the Willow Garden" that's even darker than this one.

I just finished his bio and what is not typically talked about is that he tried to kill himself in Rome just before he succeeded on April 5th. Everyone who was close to him at the end absolutely knew what he was going to do. Conspiracy theories are fun and exciting but rarely true. I also think you nailed it when you said people deal with losing an icon if they are taken from them instead of leaving voluntarily. Well done!

I do think, that it is harder to live alone, than it is to die alone. There is much more time in life, than there is in the approaching moments of death (at least for some), but that also depends on how long you live, and the complications you may be experiencing... How this happened, unfortunately, it seems, only one person will know, or a very few...
