Line Boring & Bore Welding Caterpillar 730 Dump Truck A-frame Eye | Part 1 | Sir Meccanica WS2

  • This video is Part 1 of line boring and bore welding a Caterpillar 730 Articulated Dump Truck A-frame that has a badly worn eye causing the bushing to be loose. We are using our Sir Meccanica WS2 portable in-line boring and bore welding machine. First we need to remove a seized bolt on the A-frame footing before removing 3 broken bolts that hold the retaining plate to the eye. We then use the Sir Meccanica centering device to set the bearing mounts for positioning the line boring machine. The eye position has been so badly worn and bolt holes damaged that we need to line bore out a huge amount of damaged material and bore out to the depth of the bolt holes. We position and tack weld a run off ring to the eye, hand weld to fill the bolt holes before line boring again to give a clean surface ready for the bore welding in Part 2!

Hey viewers thanks for watching todays video Part 1 of lineboring and welding the CAT 730 dump truck A-frame eye. Hope that end wasn't too cliffhanger for you all 😅 (blame the missus but she promises part 2 will be worth the wait). We haven't seen a bushing position worn this bad for a while and a rush weekend job to make it more fun! Good times 😎👍

This video brought back many memories. Over 30 years ago I worked at a Cat dealership in eastern North Carolina. Because I was a certified welder I got to do lots of lift arm, boom, and bucket line boring. I'd set up the alignment bar first, then bore out the imperfections, and then using 1/8" 7018 welding rod build up the inner surface for final reboring to spec. I really loved doing that work. Great video and thanks for sharing! And for those of you who don't know, a fly cutter isn't for taking out pesky insects! :)

I called around to find out what the new one would have cost if one was available. Of course he lost it. "I can buy a new one for less than that!" Of course I invited him to do so, which then he admitted there aren't any available. "So you got a deal, you brought me a pile of crap and I return to you a fully functional part ready to be used.
Next time bring it to me for routine service and will cost you but a fraction! Of course he never did!

I felt confused throughout the video because it seemed like a lot of extra work to salvage the existing eyelet. But I'm sure you can shed some light regarding your decision. Thanks!

Was looking for this comment, had the same thought 2/3rds thru the vid. Probably cant get one in that spec, even if you could it's less labor to bill out. I know theres a point of diminishing returns with that logic but then theres also the urgency. Customer wanting equipment back up monday after dropping the part off fri night. Either way you go, this wasn't going to be inexpensive.

Some of those are design flaws. They don't use big enough parts for the use it gets. They use a pin with a grease hole in the center that breaks or the self aligning bushing is too hard and it breaks from impact.

    • @billslack1879

would work for a while but then fail as there is not enough meat on the outer diameter to hold it for long. economics come into play here. been a farmer for 50 years and make and fix my own gear. when you haven,t got gear like kurtis you can come up with lots of alternative fixes

    • @CuttingEdgeEngineering

I like to drill out seized in bolts . Did one today a 14 mill stainless screw that bound up in the stainless housing . As long as the pilot hole is pretty well dead centre you can open up the hole till its a bit below the thread size and it will just screw out . You didnt have much time though .

I've never seen that welding lance attachment, brilliant idea. It's been a few years since I've done that kind of work, probably save a lot of backaches with that lance.

That's just lazy, however I'm not really shocked considering the state of this piece.. Broken bolts happen but letting a piece of equipment run until it gets that badly f'ked says a lot.. Great job.
