    Bob Loehne is my grandfather, so wonderful to see these old vhs tapes tossed around digitally. A time to reminisce something I was never able to see.

    Really excited for Union Pacific Challenger 3985’s restoration to be complete at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis Illinois in a few years.

    This trip was a nightmare for both CSX and Union Pacific. A lot of things that could go wrong went wrong and they never wanted to do this again.

      And which is why aside from this 1992 trip, we never seen UP steam venture east beyond their territory, right?

    I wonder if anyone was at least able to get video of 3985 (in her 676 guise) striking that coal hopper with her running board in Boody, Virginia.

    • @DylanRailVids04
      @DylanRailVids04 7 месяцев назад +2

      I never knew that actually happened!

    • @jimmyhook4852
      @jimmyhook4852 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@DylanRailVids04 Well to sum it up: Boody, Virginia had one of the tight curves on the old Clinchfield Railroad and of course... while most of the Clinchfield Challengers were able to handle that tight curve, not so in the case of Union Pacific's Heavy Challengers (aka the group of Challengers that the 3985 belongs to.).
      Anyways... a coal train was of course waiting at Boody for the Challenger to clear, but what the UP Steam Crew didn't realize was that the running board on 3985 was a bit long and of course in the process... 3985 ended up hitting her running board on the coal hopper, mainly on the Fireman's side.
      Of course... it wouldn't take until well after sunset by the time they got to Kingsport, Tennessee to get of course that running board repaired to which they were able to fix it by the next day.
