  • Union Pacific's 4-6-6-4 Challenger #3985 ventured east of the Mississippi River to participate in CSX's annual Santa Claus train on the former Clinchfield Railroad. Disguised as Clinchfield Challenger #676, the locomotive pulled the special thru the rugged terrain and over many bridges that the Clinchfield was famous for. You will see the engine on the ferry move to Elkhorn City, KY over the former C&O Big Sandy sub, the Santa train ferry move with brand new power from GE, and finally the Santa train itself pulled by the 676. I’m not from that region nor was I born at the time to see it but I do live near CSX tracks so it does fill me with pride to see what I consider my railroad heritage.

This is probably one of my favorite masquerades 3985 has done back when she was still operational for the UP, shame she's retired now but we got 4014 now.

This trip was a nightmare for both Union Pacific and CSX. So many things went wrong during this trip that after it was over they vowed never to do something like it again
