I first saw this film back in the 80's, not long after my second and last attempt of giving up on life as a psychologically abused teen. Now, as a grown woman, I must say that no matter how hard things may be, tomorrow's dawn will always allow its miraculous rays of light to brighten the darkness you are soaked into. Thank you Harold and Maude!
I start my day listening to this song on days that I don't think I'm going to make it through the day. This song corrects my attitude and makes me smile at times when smiling is difficult.
The most perfect love story ever made, it's life affirming. Just one brief scene tells us Maude's life story, when Harold sees the tattoo on her left arm. Heart wrenching. We all need a Maude in our lives.
@@georgelogothetis549 It took me YEARS to finally notice the tattoo on Maude's arm. Even though it was only for the movie, I did cry real tears! And unfortunately, too many people in 2020 do NOT understand!
That added an interesting touch to the story as a whole. Basically, it made me view Maude as kind of a female Viktor Frankl, a person I have always admired: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Frankl
@@wellwisher9817 the Nazis used tattoos as identification numbers for the Jews in the concentration camps. Seeing that, after several viewings where I'd never noticed (on Blu-ray so possibly the quality of the picture was better), gave Maude even more depth. I'm going to watch it again right now.

I hope that Cat Stevens has peace in his life now. He had such a great and beautiful singing voice. I saw him in a concert in Mobile, Alabama, in January of 1976. He sounded so great, almost like he was on the radio, or in some recording studio.
This is one of those movies that I know every pithy line. It's also a soundtrack to my younger days. I've read the posts below and with tears in my eyes I see that so many, many, people course-corrected with this song. I feel each of you and hope that you keep this song close. It's the best! I always think of Harold and Maude enjoying the silliness that is our life. ENJOY! If you wanna SING OUT, SING OUT! Much love to all.
@@LordGreystoke Maude committed suicide because she wanted to be in charge of her death, as well as her life. Instead of her death being dictated in a concentration camp.
I never saw Harold & Maude until "There's Something About Mary" talked about it being "one of the greatest love stories of our time." Whoever decided to put that in the script was a genius because it truly is... when Harold opens up to Maude about why he is obsessed with death... and the subtle revealing of why Maude lives life to the fullest... I always wished there was a different ending, but I so appreciate how everything in this movie is the opposite of what you'd expect, and yet everything you'd ever expect from true love.
Lovely song coming from a good heart - makes me smile, makes me want to really be free. And Harold and Maude is the bitter-sweetest film. That Maude is such a character, and such a life- teacher for poor Harold.

My favorite scene from the movie, which I saw in the theater when it was released, is when the priest/pastor is lecturing Harold about how disgusting it is to visualize him committing carnal sins with Maude. Now, it would just simply be a cougar on the prowl, finding her prey.

I was a Cat Stevens fan ever since I was 16 and given his album "Mathew & Son" by a dying friend in 1967 ; I instantly fell in love with his music. Then not knowing his later, even better music served as the soundtrack to "Harold & Maude", I went to see the film when it was released in 1970 or so. I was so moved by it, I re-watched it a half dozen times over the years since then. Having now reached the overly ripe age of 70 years, I can truthfully say my love of both Cat Stevens' music and Hal Ashby's film remain as strong today as I felt upon first listening to the former's albums and watching the latter's movie. But I'd be remiss and dishonest if I did not say how deeply disappointed I was and still am that Cat stopped making music in 1977 because of his conversion to Islam, and how envious and sad Ruth Gordon's character and performance as Maude make me feel as my body and mind give way increasingly to premature decrepitude and medical maladies. As for the former, Cat thankfully has been able to free himself from at least some of Islam's repressive impact on his life by returning to making his music. However, he lost 20+ years of making his unique music, and experiencing the kinds of wonders, loves, worries, pains, etc. that secular life provides and are a part of and necessary for his past musical creativity. I don't think I can forgive any religion of doing that to any artist as gifted as him, no matter how special or peaceful it falsely claims to be. As for my envy of and sadness over Ruth Gordon/Maude, I tell myself that only in the magical world of film can a 50 year-old and 20 year-old fall in love! Or in my dreams. And it is not the ages that matters most, but l'amour de la vie. The beautiful truthful, truthful beautiful words to this song are, to borrow more from Mr. Keats, "all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."
